    If you liked the chorus on "Midnight Sun" you'd probably dig one of the b-sides from this same year: "Daylight." Very strong! (It was the b-side to the "Don't Cry" single.)

    You should try to listen to their Asia in Asia live tour from 1983-4. They brought in Greg Lake for bass and vocals. He only had 6 weeks to memorize their songs, and he nailed it. They have a recent remaster of the the tour. Amazingly good.

    They often did "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" as a small, quiet ballad. There's a studio version like that as a bonus track on the first "Icon" album by Wetton / Downes.

    Nice review to second Asia album, this were the John Wetton area and their most successful years, all these song were filled with joy and hope in the tone. And a beautiful sleeve design! I would suggest you "True Colours" and "Open your eyes" this last is a long progressive song. The big hit of course was "Don't Cry". You must also listen to the second area with John Payne that began in 1990, try the Album "Arena". Cheers!

    One of the last songs that charted with the original lineup was "Days Like These". You may want to try John Wetton's "Battlelines" song and album. It is woth a listen.

    By the way, i love the Roger Dean cover in the background.

      Hi Thomas. Did he do his solos within the band's songs, or just a drum only performance from start to finish? Thanks for being first here today! 🥇

    I certainly enjoy hearing Asia, I’m sure we’ll hear them regularly in the lineup. “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” is a strong song, but I’m glad you enjoyed “Midnight Sun” even more. Many great songs on the Alpha album.

    Because Asia’s debut album was so popular, executives at Geffen Records were eager for the band to make a follow-up album. Palmer told Louder, “With an album that enormous, we should have toured for 18 months and built a global audience. Sadly, that didn’t happen.” Despite their collective talents and a familiar producer, they were unable to reach the same glorious heights with their second album. "The whole thing got out of control," Howe told Classic Rock in 2020. "None of us were happy with the mix of the second album, 'Alpha'... Mostly, though, there was too much pop.” One of the pop tunes bemoaned by Howe and Palmer-”Don’t Cry”-was a Top 10 hit and became their second song to top the Mainstream Rock chart.
    Though it reached the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 (No. 6) and was certified Platinum, 'Alpha' was a commercial disappointment when compared to "Asia." As it turned out, Asia fell victim to the unexpectedly massive success of their debut album. - Excerpts from American Songwriter and Ultimate Classic Rock

      @Musiquesaecouter Месяц назад

      True, the opening album "Asia" were more a inspirational gathering with better songs, Alpha still have a couple of great moments (thinking of "Open your eyes" and some other parts) but we can feel they were pushed somehow.

    Love the bands from whence they sprang, but I also love the chief visionary and visioneer of the bands from whence they sprung. As such, you will find that boss is generally more on the ball, than their staff. Jon and Robert were the boss, and the other guys were staff. Makes all the difference in the world. Wakeman is exceptional, and Bru. Just my take from having made real-time musical decisions. "In the Dead of Night" might be platinum level. You probably know that one already.

      "In the dead of night" comes from the band UK, the previous super group featuring John Wetton at vocals, as well as Eddie Jobson on the keyboards see also the song "Danger money" that band were terrific (released between 1978 and 1979!)

    Midnight sun is not an oxymoron: If you are of the arctic circle (or south of the antarctic cirlce) around the solstices (June/December respectively) the sun won't set: there will be sunlight at midnight.

    Asia has a song in this album Alpha, called NEVER in a million years, I thought that my firiend NEVER in a million years would react to "The Smile has Left Your Eyes" 😅
    My question is WHY are you so reluctant to react to the song videos ? OBVIOUSLY I say the videos that are not blocked by YT.

      @bigjapi1 Месяц назад +2

      One more thing... you highlighted Carl on the drums, I agree, but now I'm going to give you my opinion about John Wetton, who is in my top 5 voices of all time, in this period in Asia, John was at his best, his voice is Dali's Mona Lisa, perfection.

      See, we still have hope for a few others that I will react to in the next 22 years! Sorry I didn't have time for the live version, but so glad I heard this and Midnight Sun also. I trust you, but since JP got his strike due to a reaction that included a video, I'm even more paranoid now 😬 Oh and of course mine kept getting blocked, including Soda Stereo, Pink Floyd, etc. I'm sure I will try again eventually...

John was in MANY bands from 1971, I just know his work from King Crimpson 1972 to 1974., he also participated in Roxy Music 1975 and Huriah Heep 1976, from 1977 to 1980 he was the vocalist of a GREAT band that you have to react to... UK (add to your list "Night After Night" and "Nothing To Lose"), from 1981 Asia and other stuff including his fantastic participation with Hackett's live superband in 1996.
