"Smooth" metal works for me! Many things to love about both of these songs... Thanks for watching! 🥰
Octavarium is a must in the Dream Theater catalog.
I've never heard anyone describe Mike Portnoy's drumming as "Tame" before and doubt I ever will again.
I guess I meant tame dynamics.... that's why I enjoyed the songs so much... and I didn't have the volume low. Thanks for watching!
@@retroreactions....yikes…you used tame and Portnoy in the same sentence? Oops….
Even Retro Reactions has "epic fail" moments every once in a while! 😁
I guess it would be like calling Robert Plant a "timid" singer.....😏
@@retroreactions....EXACTLY! Hey there…. Check your PM’s..😁👋👋🤗
The Count of Tuscany has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Takes you on a magical journey and based off a true story that happened to the guitarist, John Petrucci
Definitely a good introduction for you to Dream Theater. I thoroughly enjoyed both songs. I know I’ve seen “Pull Me Under” at least a couple of times live. Probably my favorite Dream Theater show was them as the opener, then ELP, and finally Deep Purple! I remember how incredible it was! 😮 Another great song of theirs is “Take Away My Pain” from their 1997 album Falling Into Infinity.
Yea, perfect balance for me. I'll skip any extreme songs they have lol... Another EPIC triple bill you witnessed! TAMP on the list....DT will be back 🙂
I think that the abrupt ending of Pull Me Under is meant to mimic the often abrupt nature of death. Death is the topic of the lyrics and title. DT music is on a spectrum from Progressive to Metal. I lean towards their progressive side of the band, but respect their more metal music as well. Original drummer Mike Portnoy has returned to the band after 15 years elsewhere. The first performance of the “classic” lineup will be in London this Fall. I hope that they film those two shows. I think that it’s going to be a legendary concert.
Pull Me Under is the first of eight songs from the great Images and Words album.
I recommend you also listen to Octavarium from the album Octavarium, which is 23 minutes of pure joy.
Cool I will look it up. Thanks for watching!
Thanks, my man... Yet another great one. ❤
Thank you! I appreciate all the visits you've made here recently 😊
Dream Theater = prog metal expansion of Rush and Kansas. Band members have cited both as influences/inspirations
Interesting...I do hear a little Kansas in song 2 since it's playing right now. Thanks for the info and for being first yet again! 💯 🥇
I recommend some more dynamic songs of theirs that really showcase the talent. These 2 are semi more relaxed. Try Illumination Theory, Breaking All Illusions, Home, Octavarium, just to name a few.
These are, without doubt, the first 2 songs for someone to listen to from these Legends!!!🤟🏻
Sweet, sounds like I made a great choice. Had some guidance from 2 wonderful subs. Thanks so much for watching!!
My favorite band
I love Dream Theater! 😎👍 "Pull Me Under" was such a big deal for us prog and metal heads when it became a hit because it was getting regular radio play and gave us all joy and hope! 🥰 I've noticed you tend to not be particularly into most forms of metal, Brandon, but maybe now that you've done Queensryche, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, and Dream Theatre I'll do a "metal request" sometime, but I promise to be gentle?! 😅 So many great bands to dig into like Fates Warning, Symphony X, Haken, King's X, Ayreon, Pain Of Salvation, Karnivool, Nevermore, etc., etc.!
Strange that I don't recall ever hearing PMU on any alt rock radio stations back in the 90s...Yea, if the metal is like this, and the others you mentioned, I can enjoy and appreciate it. Something like Megadeth is too much for me. Always open minded with music though! I'll listen to Lords of Acid then Doris Day right afterwards any day LOL...
@@retroreactions.... I think only KISW was playing Dream Theater? They were, and still are I think, Seattle's main hard rock station. Here's a list of their top 25 "The Biggest Rock Songs of the '90s" to give you an idea of what they played:
25. "Wonderwall" - Oasis
24. "Freak On A Leash" - Korn
23. "Lightning Crashes" - Live
22. "Fuel" - Metallica
21. "Mysterious Ways" - U2
20. "Touch, Peel and Stand" - Days of the New
19. "Sober" - Tool
18. "Dragula" - Rob Zombie
17. "Creep" - Radiohead
16. "Living On The Edge" - Aerosmith
15. "What I Got" - Sublime
14. "Shine" - Collective Soul

Maybe after my 'sad love songs" request we might need a "smooth" prog metal compilation to pull us out of the our deep sorrow? 😭🤣
Ah SO many memories with so many of those AMAZING songs! Love Seattle! I've always said I'm going to move there because of the rain....🌧
@@retroreactions.... I love it around here but it really doesn't rain as much as its reputation might suggest? (although I love the rain and overcast cool days so I probably don't notice? 😅) We haven't had any rain since the first week of June, and the record for the longest dry spell is 55 days. The longest number of continuous days with rain is only 33!
Ooo,ooooo request Aryeon!
They are definitely a VERY interesting band. I don't really like the abrupt ending. But like you Brandon. I respect it. I knew you were going to like this band. They are just too freaking good to be over looked. To me, they are a super group. Masters of their craft.
Good morning! (for 3 more minutes LOL)
Looks like they have a huge discography, so lots to explore!
Good Noon. Is that a thing? Good Noon? LOL
Fantastic!! Le's discover. I only know them a little bit.
* Let's
I highly recommend the song Learning to Live off of Dream Theater's Images and Words... written by John Myung
If you get a chance to watch a drum cam of Mike Portnoy, for SURE do so. Such a cool dude…..top-tier prog drummer, IMO, up there with Peart, Carrey, Buford….and the look of a bad-ass. 🤗😉
Dream Theater is one of my favorite bands and this album is my favorite but some times Portnoy's drumming leaves me feeling beat up on what should be a somber track.
Great to hear Tim! I'll check if he stayed the drummer throughout their career. Thanks for watching!
32 minutes of progressive metal?
No way my dear ❤
If you wanna hear an epic of pure perfection listen to Octavarium by these guys. It's 24 or 25 minute masterpiece
Jupp, James Labrie is still the lead singer!!!
Next stop - Octavarium
"Images and Words is by far their best overall output - start to finish without a dud track - and arguably the one that put prog metal on the mainstream map. While this one is great, "Metropolis Part 1 - The Miracle and the Sleeper" will blow you away with power and finesse, signature/tempo changes abound.
