This channel is THE Gold Standard on the Imperial Japanese Navy. If only they were longer- but that's not a complaint. Rather, a wish...

One small mistake HMS Hawkings had 7.5 inch guns not 8 inch.

I've heard that the design process of the Furutaka class was derived from the 7.200ton Proposal of 1916 which originally called for a scout cruiser but was redesignated in 1916 for the 8-4 and 8-6 naval programmes. The planned light cruisers had an proposed armament of 14cm guns as well as 20cm guns when available.

The first1/700 scale model I ever built was the _Kako._ I always wondered about the gap between B turret and the bridge; thank you for sharing the roots of the class and showing the reason why.

The words "Yubari" and "better protected" in conjunction really highlight the low protection of that era of cruiser.

I like your concise method of delivery, and using a voice that keeps up the interest. The content, of course, is excellent.

That single 8“ B turret with its absurdly high barbette looks somehow ridiculous.

Japan's very first heavy cruiser, along with her sister Kako.
On the first, I got Tamiya's USS Indianapolis (CA 35), which I intend on converting as her sister, Portland, which wax at Leyte in '44. In preparation in my comic about that battle.
Take care, and all the best.

I wonder why she ended up perishing on cape esperance instead of aoba that received more damage at the beginning, maybe the improvements on the subsequent classes have to do with it?

While Aoba took a lot of shells during that battle, most were above the water line, so the cruiser could more or less keep on sailing. Furutaka had her torpedoes explode on deck, which itself quite often could be crippling damage for Japanese cruisers and then she also got hit by a torpedo in the forward engine room and started flooding and some shells apparently hit the other engine room as well. She just took some hits into vital areas, including underwater damage, while the Aoba didn't.
