For an anime released during late 90s to early 2000s, Gundam Wing Endless Waltz has a beautiful animation quality. The design and the animation are one of the reasons why this was my favorite Gundam Series

I honestly never realized how deep this fight was outside of the surface level robot fight (frankly the whole movie if you really think about it). The Gundam pilots and all the soldiers were groomed into fighting or fought of their own will in this war that now that peace is obtained, they don’t know what to do with themselves. Wu Fei obviously feeling this wants to just feel validated and not tossed aside now that the war is over and peace was obtained. Now him teaming up with Mariemaia was a dumb move of course but i understand it
Yeah. Sadly there's really no good solution. Other than to make sure vets are taken care of theres honestly nothing else for them. Telling someone that the thing their good at is obsolete would shake any person to the core.

This is how anime should be. Well drawn characters, detail mech designs, and good chorographed battles. From the late 80's through to all of the 90's and early 00's, THIS was the golden age of anime. Period.
It fell a bit in 00s with the introduction of early CG but some shows and their themes were still impressive. Mecha today? A sad state of affairs. Such a joke
This is one of the best instances of the sort of 'theatricality' found in Gundam, (Wing especially), everyone's doing big dramatic speeches, emphatic, sweeping gestures and actions. Everybody's super-earnest and the whole cast seems to be 'acting for the back row', so to speak.
"How many more times must I kill that girl and her dog?" I really love how the whole debate concluded, with Wu Fei simply realizing that Heero was deeply suffering as he fought throughout the war. His remark earlier "Don't you feel fulfilled as I do whenever we are engaged in a fight?" was entirely off based and his eyes were opened then and there, remembering his suffering when his own colony was destroyed.
yeah, Wufei was just following and trying to find his way to move forward, feeling haunted by the losses and his past battles, probably feeling somewhat alone thinking the rest of the gundam pilots moved on Heero with that one line kinda just showed him how he wasn't alone at all, and that Heero feels similar, but at the same time dreads the idea of such deaths happening once more, almost yearning for the "endless waltz" of war and destruction to come to an end, for people like Wufei and himself not only be unneeded, but for more never to be made again. I feel Gundam wing is one series that could improve greatly if they remade and sort of included some of the troubles and things they showed them dealing with in the movie, it adds quite a bit to each one, and just in general was quite a good series if executed a bit oddly in ways
@aPopcap gundam wing has the framework of an absolutely amazing series. If it were remade with more human sounding dialog it would be a total showstopper for the series
For anyone who is confused as to why the hell Wufei did what he did in the Endless Waltz Movie, I recommend reading the Manga Prequel to it: "Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists".
Only if you're a young man like these two. The understanding of what is "peace" and "war" is something extremely complex and doesn't have much to do with what is shown in GW.
Maybe for a young teenager? The writing for most gundam shows, and especially Wing, can only be called 'Juvenile' at best. Especially with the obsession of Mary Sue peace princesses.
This movie, different from many other anime movies that came from their series, is really a perfect continuation of it and stands on its own plot at the same time. The topic were always deep, mixing politics, philosophy and each character's struggle with their identity and values, so each battle was much more that just robots fighting each other, but the stakes were always high whether for plot means or from the principles each side was defending.
Wu Fei is such a tragic character. He, perhaps more than anyone, was a child soldier. His understanding of the world was always black and white, a child's view of it. When he did "everything he was supposed to", he even won (after a fashion) against Treize, and the world failed to live up to his expectations, he returned to the only thing he knew.
Yeah though Ironically he was the one most likely not to have become one. He only became a Gundam Pilot due to a tragic incident with his wife shortly before operation meteor.

This is what makes Gundam Wing memorable and great. It's not just the mecha action, there is philosophy and politics thrown in. This is before Code Geass got an anime series.
@@NeroVingian40 I didn’t watch Gundam Wing as a kid (I did have a toy of Wing Zero, but that was just because I thought it looked cool XD) so I don’t have the nostaligia glasses. Wing is so badly paced, non-sensical, and terribly voiced at times that it really doesn’t hold up. SEED/SEED Destiny are my favourite Gundam series, and although they definitely have their flaws, mainly with the recycled animation, I do find the storytelling to be a lot better. It annoys me when people make fun of Kira surviving the Strike/Aegis explosion but are fine with Heero surviving the Wing Gundam’s Self-Destruct. Kira surviving the nuke? Yes that is completely absurd, but it’s not like Kira alone is the only one with plot armour in Gundam.
@@harrymillar4193 most people I know (or most people I see online) are mostly still fine with SEED, even with the plot armor. Really, plot armor doesn’t make or break an anime series, every Gundam or almost any anime series at all have plot armor, it’s fine. I don’t even know why people are so concerned about plot armor in the first place. Where SEED Destiny falters imo is at just how bad the general plot is. The themes of the plot (war, racism, prejudice, etc) are still handled pretty well (I dare say, pretty great tbh) but how they handled their characters are pretty bad, imo. The plot’s eventual focus back towards Kira kinda makes Shinn, with all the character building he has, just felt moot since the story just jumps focus from viewing the story from Shinn’s eyes back into Kira’s. The plot’s inability to just put Kira on the sidelines and how they just couldn’t stay focused on Shinn and Athrun from start to finish just throws the plot around at bad spots. It makes you wonder, why was Shinn even there in the first place, the shift on focus was really that jarring.

Here is how it was supposed to go - Kira dies - Athrun flees and Shinn shoots him down - Athrun survives - When Shinn and Athrun meet again, Athrun manages to convince Shinn that Durandal is wrong - Final Battle is Shinn vs Rey However Shinn is still my favourite Gundam pilot - even after they butchered him by leaving him half-finished, they still do an accurate portrayal of a man that has been manipulated struggling to come to terms with everything that has happened.
That's literally all Gundam series. Politics and philosophy are in all of them. The only thing that Wing has that it does better than others is mecha design and fluid animation. But the writing is some of the worst of all Gundam series. The reason westerners love it so much is because it was one of the first anime to be successfully imported, even with the shit translations
I think the story arch for Gundam has finally come full circle for me. As a kid, all I saw were bad ass robots fighting, and nothing made sense. I have tried watching what shows I can as an adult, and this theme of the effects from turning a space colony into a meteor... it's terrifying. The authors took a step into a sinister side of humanity - the relinquishing of God, fierce tribalism, and the destruction caused by the politicians' greed.
What I liked about the wing suits, apart from their design of course, is their cockpit design. Something about how they look makes it more believable that they're vehicles.
Wufei: "Humanity didn't change! All enemies were defeated, but Earth didn't change one bit!" *Char glares at Amuro in Newtype heaven* Amuro: What... *What* ?
everyone complaining about Wufei but the dude was traumatized from the days of fighting Treize and Zech's White Fang; Relena's policies basically tell him to move on from those days and force him into a civilian lifestyle with no other options and probably nothing to help him adjust to civilian life; it's hard for a soldier to come back to a world that doesn't care for them or what they did for it
Well I think everyone complains about him due to damage inflicted by his gundam to zero wing. Heero tries to be defensive and reasoning but wufei kept charging in.
As a kid I was always pissed off that Wing Zero got messed up in this battle, but I realized now that Heero was holding back in this fight to prevent Wing Zero from killing Wufei while trying to reach out to him.
Objectively the zero system would recognize Altron / Wufei as a threat that needs to be killed, but since Heero at this point had mastery of the system he had enough control to hold the Gundam back from going with the program
Bruh, you're not the only one. When Wing Zero almost got it's armor destroyed by Gundam Altron I was furious. But, of course Heero had to restrain his Gundam by holding back its awesome strength.
Wufei is an idealistic and sensitive man who would be a pain in the ass if he were actually your friend, but he never lies in his words and cares more about the weak than anyone else.
"Soldiers have fought to attain a sense of peace! Believe in the world we live in now!" - Nice line, Heero. Almost sounds like you got it from a fortune cookie more than your own experiences.
what a disingenuous comment no fortune cookie would ever have a statement like that. Heero DID experience the changes of the world he took part in actively fighting. So he is speaking from experience.
Gundam Wing is terribly misunderstood. The heavy use of stock footage for most of it's scenes really hurt it. This high budget OVA shows what COULD have been. The characters are very human and have deep philosophical beliefs. Heero a child assassin trained to be nothing more then a weapon or tool seeks to find meaning in his life beyond what he was trained to do. Wufei here was a soldier/warrior who was groomed to fight any enemy that he was told was evil or was simply his enemy. Now that peace has been obtained he feels like he was tossed aside and abandoned having no purpose since he was only a warrior and struggles to come to terms with this new peaceful existence. This was obviously well thought out and written with a deep understanding of how people behave when they were raised or trained a certain way. THIS is where Gundam Wing shines, I think it gets a bad rep and disingenuous reviews about a weak plot. While the plot may not be award winning and the re use of the same footage and animation cels is a legitimate criticism I don't think these alone should be the defining features that determine if Gundam Wing is trash or not. The plot relies heavily on the characters and their development which if you ask me was well written. The whole Gundam Wing is overrated because nostalgia is an inaccurate statement at best. Alot of people couldnt understand the nuances and deep philosophies of the characters and their beliefs when they first watched Gundam Wing it was just , "Cool giant robots!" then people grew up and thought , "Wow that was shit." and it's really unfair. Wing should be reanimated to where it does not rely on the cheap tactic of stock footage to cut costs and better display of the characters personalities and their development.
Fun Fact: By the end on the main plot of Gundam Wing, Heero was so skilled handling the Zero System that he actually managed to "override it" so he wouldn't just kill Wufei without much effort. I still think that stuff (the Zero System) it scares the hell out of me!
He definitely wasn’t fighting to kill. I didn’t even think of the zero system still being in place and in the anime it really only seemed to trigger when a person had doubts and extreme unstable emotions.
I wish someone would remake this series with an actual refined plot. I loved all the suits in this series and their unique styles of battle would be nice to see a 2020s rendition
I also think that Gundam Wing would really benefit from some kind of reboot. The setting had so much potential, but I feel a lot was either simply wasted, or just rushed. I think the original run could have done much better, and maybe stood the test of time, if there were more episodes... I guess what I'm trying to say is that the original series could've used more time in the oven

This TV Show and movie really explained how war really is 🤷♂️ Back when I was 12 it helped me understand how fucked up the higher ups in every government really are. Now that I’m 36, the reality is far more depressing 😒

Just don't expect the government to take care of you because that is not their job. But I do like this Endless Waltz movie tho :) Gundam Wing was my introduction to this franchise!
You can’t make the best out of a worse situation. Not when it’s cataclysmic and on a large scale. The problem with today’s government is there’s a lot of shady dealings internally. Where political power is held by those who won’t let it go. Did you not notice that all these old fools continue to bring each other up and keep a close grasp on their seats? I as a civilian have one thing that will protect me against their tyranny, and I’d rather die before they take away my 2nd amendment rights. That’s just the reality of today’s society. When you live in peace, but are in fear of what your own government can or WILL do to you. But hey, to each their own. You do what you think is right for you.
Ah yes Gundam Wing. Took space opera to a whole new level. Who needs well choreographed fight scenes when you can have philosophical mecha debates. Every kids dream.
There's some weird stuff happening in the atmospheric re-entry, although W. Zero's wings are suposed to act as a heat shield it's the Altron who came out unscathed without shielding.
I watched this fight so many times and I never noticed or thought about that! Thank you. 👍 The Altron should have some partial damage due to the atmosphere re-entry, while W. Zero instead uses its wings as planned; its damage from the atmosphere re-entry should be null or minimal at least.
@@oyametalicusII When they lock weapons the Altron is taking the brunt of friction with its back, then the W. Zero starts peeling off pieces before they begin spinning wildly away from the camera.
Because wing zero designed put all its armor on its wings, and Alton designed to put all its armor on its body. You didn't know no matter how bad wing zero got beat up its wings only take minor damage
I think the thing that sells this more is knowing the Episode Zero manga, which was cut from the original series for the clip show EPs because of production issues. It covers the backstories of all the leads and how/why what happens in the series is important to them. Wufei finds peace and someone he respects in his wife, and she's killed in an Oz colony attack. He takes over the mission of Operation M from her and fights to prevent what he sees as senseless violence wrested on innocent people's lives and nature (that's also why he's so mad at the idea of the original Operation M - dropping a colony on earth - in this clip. His whole arc with Treize plays out if that belief is true or not, and the means of war, and finds its denouement here. Similarly Heero, he's orphaned by the assassin who adopts him and involved in killing the man who's name he's given, who might have been the only viable option for diplomatic peace between Earth and the colonies. He sees in the innocent girl who's kind to him what has happened to him and how the cycle just perpetuates until people stop seeking war and start seeking peace. It's why he's not able to kill Relena and why he fights almost suicidally through the series for what he believes in. That whole bit is the only flaw in the original show IMO - you understand the 5 leads so much better having read it. It's also why I don't like the EW/Katoki redesigns. I get them from a film exclusive/coolness standpoint, but they're really Japonified and remove a lot of the innate symbolism in the original versions which took off from Oz's European style. EW tries to sell the whole Zero is an angel/Deathscythe is a devil thing and it feels done to satisfy the audience in Japan rather than the story. Duo isn't called the God of Death because of how Deathscythe looks, it's because he feels like death follows him around everywhere he goes (again explained in the EZ manga) and takes away everything that has given him kindness or meaning in his life. Conflating the two is purely an aesthetic thing, but it robs the meaning of what it was originally for
I also compared it personally to how the Gundam Pilots in Wing also carries a partt of Char's personality and struggles throughout the series even though Zechs was technically the Char Clone.

As a teenager, I watched this for the giant robot battles.
As an adult, I came back for the characters struggling to realize peaceful ideals.

小さい頃見た時は「五飛って独善的だなぁ」って思ったけど他のシリーズをみてW外伝を見て歳を重ねてく内に「五飛も色々葛藤してんだよなぁ」って言う風に考えな変わりましたね。ようは真っ直ぐ過ぎるんですよね五飛って。
初めてみた時はヒイロが好きだったけど

たしかに…5人それぞれの正義と哀しみを抱えて戦ってたんだなぁと感じます。ヒイロなんか任務の為とはいえ、自分の命すら簡単に捨てようとするキャラだったし…この作品はガンダムを知らない人にもオススメしたいです。

This is one of the best instances of the sort of 'theatricality' found in Gundam, (Wing especially), everyone's doing big dramatic speeches, emphatic, sweeping gestures and actions. Everybody's super-earnest and the whole cast seems to be 'acting for the back row', so to speak.

I really love how the whole debate concluded, with Wu Fei simply realizing that Heero was deeply suffering as he fought throughout the war.
His remark earlier "Don't you feel fulfilled as I do whenever we are engaged in a fight?" was entirely off based and his eyes were opened then and there, remembering his suffering when his own colony was destroyed.
yeah, Wufei was just following and trying to find his way to move forward, feeling haunted by the losses and his past battles, probably feeling somewhat alone thinking the rest of the gundam pilots moved on
Heero with that one line kinda just showed him how he wasn't alone at all, and that Heero feels similar, but at the same time dreads the idea of such deaths happening once more, almost yearning for the "endless waltz" of war and destruction to come to an end, for people like Wufei and himself not only be unneeded, but for more never to be made again.
I feel Gundam wing is one series that could improve greatly if they remade and sort of included some of the troubles and things they showed them dealing with in the movie, it adds quite a bit to each one, and just in general was quite a good series if executed a bit oddly in ways
@aPopcap gundam wing has the framework of an absolutely amazing series. If it were remade with more human sounding dialog it would be a total showstopper for the series
For anyone who is confused as to why the hell Wufei did what he did in the Endless Waltz Movie, I recommend reading the Manga Prequel to it: "Gundam Wing: Battlefield of Pacifists".

This movie, different from many other anime movies that came from their series, is really a perfect continuation of it and stands on its own plot at the same time. The topic were always deep, mixing politics, philosophy and each character's struggle with their identity and values, so each battle was much more that just robots fighting each other, but the stakes were always high whether for plot means or from the principles each side was defending.

It has terrible Gundam designs. they completely bastardised the T.V. aesthetic just because the show kicked off Gundam on a global scale.
Wu Fei is such a tragic character. He, perhaps more than anyone, was a child soldier. His understanding of the world was always black and white, a child's view of it. When he did "everything he was supposed to", he even won (after a fashion) against Treize, and the world failed to live up to his expectations, he returned to the only thing he knew.
Yeah though Ironically he was the one most likely not to have become one. He only became a Gundam Pilot due to a tragic incident with his wife shortly before operation meteor.

@@NeroVingian40 I didn’t watch Gundam Wing as a kid (I did have a toy of Wing Zero, but that was just because I thought it looked cool XD) so I don’t have the nostaligia glasses. Wing is so badly paced, non-sensical, and terribly voiced at times that it really doesn’t hold up.
SEED/SEED Destiny are my favourite Gundam series, and although they definitely have their flaws, mainly with the recycled animation, I do find the storytelling to be a lot better. It annoys me when people make fun of Kira surviving the Strike/Aegis explosion but are fine with Heero surviving the Wing Gundam’s Self-Destruct. Kira surviving the nuke? Yes that is completely absurd, but it’s not like Kira alone is the only one with plot armour in Gundam.
@@harrymillar4193 most people I know (or most people I see online) are mostly still fine with SEED, even with the plot armor. Really, plot armor doesn’t make or break an anime series, every Gundam or almost any anime series at all have plot armor, it’s fine. I don’t even know why people are so concerned about plot armor in the first place.
Where SEED Destiny falters imo is at just how bad the general plot is. The themes of the plot (war, racism, prejudice, etc) are still handled pretty well (I dare say, pretty great tbh) but how they handled their characters are pretty bad, imo. The plot’s eventual focus back towards Kira kinda makes Shinn, with all the character building he has, just felt moot since the story just jumps focus from viewing the story from Shinn’s eyes back into Kira’s. The plot’s inability to just put Kira on the sidelines and how they just couldn’t stay focused on Shinn and Athrun from start to finish just throws the plot around at bad spots. It makes you wonder, why was Shinn even there in the first place, the shift on focus was really that jarring.

- Athrun flees and Shinn shoots him down
- Athrun survives
- When Shinn and Athrun meet again, Athrun manages to convince Shinn that Durandal is wrong
- Final Battle is Shinn vs Rey
However Shinn is still my favourite Gundam pilot - even after they butchered him by leaving him half-finished, they still do an accurate portrayal of a man that has been manipulated struggling to come to terms with everything that has happened.
That's literally all Gundam series. Politics and philosophy are in all of them. The only thing that Wing has that it does better than others is mecha design and fluid animation. But the writing is some of the worst of all Gundam series.
The reason westerners love it so much is because it was one of the first anime to be successfully imported, even with the shit translations

ガンダム作品のストーリーの中で、戦争に於ける大人と子供の対比と関連性が色濃く描かれている部分とそれらが顕著に押し出されているシリーズが好きです。
大人にしかできないことと子供にしかできないこと、大人にはできないことと子供ではできないこと、大人に振り回される子供と子供に振り回される大人。
1st.、F91、W、Seed(特にDestiny)などは特にその色が濃い。
戦争という大人の事情に子供達が巻き込まれ犠牲になっているんだという悲しさに対し、戦場という大人が役割を果たす場に子供が関わるとろくなことにならないという対比が何とも言えない複雑な感情を生んで胸を締め付けられる思いになります。
大人と子供を通り越したところも含めれば、やはり戦争や戦場に子供や一般人を巻き込んだり絡ませてはいけないのだなとより痛感します…。

幼稚園の頃からエンドレスワルツをDVDで見て羽ゼロ好きだったけど敗者達の栄光見た時初めてこの姿になった経緯が分かりました。最後の最高出力バスターライフル3連射でヒイロが無事だったのはゼロフレームのおかげなど色々な細い設定を調べて行くとアナザーガンダムもとても面白いと思いました
敗者たちの栄光とOVAのEWはまた細かい事が違うから、OVA EW≠敗者たちの栄光だよ
それと最後ヒイロは最高出力で撃ってない ウイングのバスターライフルの時点でフル出力で撃っていたら、射線軸周辺にいただけのMSも融解爆発するから
フルで撃っていたら一気にシェルターぶっ壊されてリリーナ死ぬし、周りのサーペントのパイロット達も巻き込んで不殺を完遂できない

I think the story arch for Gundam has finally come full circle for me. As a kid, all I saw were bad ass robots fighting, and nothing made sense. I have tried watching what shows I can as an adult, and this theme of the effects from turning a space colony into a meteor... it's terrifying. The authors took a step into a sinister side of humanity - the relinquishing of God, fierce tribalism, and the destruction caused by the politicians' greed.

What I liked about the wing suits, apart from their design of course, is their cockpit design. Something about how they look makes it more believable that they're vehicles.

そんな祖父が母に１度だけ従軍時の話をして「俺は人殺しだ」と言っていたらしい。
自分が物心ついた時には祖父は亡くなっていたけど、最期まで葛藤していたのだろうか？
ヒイロと五飛の戦いを見る度に、この戦いのヒイロの最後の台詞を聞く度に祖父の話を思い出す。
スタローン演じるランボーの主人公みたいな感じかな？

As a kid I was always pissed off that Wing Zero got messed up in this battle, but I realized now that Heero was holding back in this fight to prevent Wing Zero from killing Wufei while trying to reach out to him.
Objectively the zero system would recognize Altron / Wufei as a threat that needs to be killed, but since Heero at this point had mastery of the system he had enough control to hold the Gundam back from going with the program

Wufei is an idealistic and sensitive man who would be a pain in the ass if he were actually your friend, but he never lies in his words and cares more about the weak than anyone else.

Gundam Wing is terribly misunderstood. The heavy use of stock footage for most of it's scenes really hurt it. This high budget OVA shows what COULD have been. The characters are very human and have deep philosophical beliefs. Heero a child assassin trained to be nothing more then a weapon or tool seeks to find meaning in his life beyond what he was trained to do. Wufei here was a soldier/warrior who was groomed to fight any enemy that he was told was evil or was simply his enemy. Now that peace has been obtained he feels like he was tossed aside and abandoned having no purpose since he was only a warrior and struggles to come to terms with this new peaceful existence.
This was obviously well thought out and written with a deep understanding of how people behave when they were raised or trained a certain way. THIS is where Gundam Wing shines, I think it gets a bad rep and disingenuous reviews about a weak plot. While the plot may not be award winning and the re use of the same footage and animation cels is a legitimate criticism I don't think these alone should be the defining features that determine if Gundam Wing is trash or not.
The plot relies heavily on the characters and their development which if you ask me was well written. The whole Gundam Wing is overrated because nostalgia is an inaccurate statement at best. Alot of people couldnt understand the nuances and deep philosophies of the characters and their beliefs when they first watched Gundam Wing it was just , "Cool giant robots!" then people grew up and thought , "Wow that was shit." and it's really unfair. Wing should be reanimated to where it does not rely on the cheap tactic of stock footage to cut costs and better display of the characters personalities and their development.

Fun Fact: By the end on the main plot of Gundam Wing, Heero was so skilled handling the Zero System that he actually managed to "override it" so he wouldn't just kill Wufei without much effort.

I also think that Gundam Wing would really benefit from some kind of reboot. The setting had so much potential, but I feel a lot was either simply wasted, or just rushed. I think the original run could have done much better, and maybe stood the test of time, if there were more episodes... I guess what I'm trying to say is that the original series could've used more time in the oven

Just don't expect the government to take care of you because that is not their job. But I do like this Endless Waltz movie tho :) Gundam Wing was my introduction to this franchise!
You can’t make the best out of a worse situation. Not when it’s cataclysmic and on a large scale. The problem with today’s government is there’s a lot of shady dealings internally. Where political power is held by those who won’t let it go. Did you not notice that all these old fools continue to bring each other up and keep a close grasp on their seats? I as a civilian have one thing that will protect me against their tyranny, and I’d rather die before they take away my 2nd amendment rights. That’s just the reality of today’s society. When you live in peace, but are in fear of what your own government can or WILL do to you. But hey, to each their own. You do what you think is right for you.

There's some weird stuff happening in the atmospheric re-entry, although W. Zero's wings are suposed to act as a heat shield it's the Altron who came out unscathed without shielding.

The Altron should have some partial damage due to the atmosphere re-entry, while W. Zero instead uses its wings as planned; its damage from the atmosphere re-entry should be null or minimal at least.

I think the thing that sells this more is knowing the Episode Zero manga, which was cut from the original series for the clip show EPs because of production issues. It covers the backstories of all the leads and how/why what happens in the series is important to them.
Wufei finds peace and someone he respects in his wife, and she's killed in an Oz colony attack. He takes over the mission of Operation M from her and fights to prevent what he sees as senseless violence wrested on innocent people's lives and nature (that's also why he's so mad at the idea of the original Operation M - dropping a colony on earth - in this clip. His whole arc with Treize plays out if that belief is true or not, and the means of war, and finds its denouement here.
Similarly Heero, he's orphaned by the assassin who adopts him and involved in killing the man who's name he's given, who might have been the only viable option for diplomatic peace between Earth and the colonies. He sees in the innocent girl who's kind to him what has happened to him and how the cycle just perpetuates until people stop seeking war and start seeking peace. It's why he's not able to kill Relena and why he fights almost suicidally through the series for what he believes in.
That whole bit is the only flaw in the original show IMO - you understand the 5 leads so much better having read it. It's also why I don't like the EW/Katoki redesigns. I get them from a film exclusive/coolness standpoint, but they're really Japonified and remove a lot of the innate symbolism in the original versions which took off from Oz's European style. EW tries to sell the whole Zero is an angel/Deathscythe is a devil thing and it feels done to satisfy the audience in Japan rather than the story. Duo isn't called the God of Death because of how Deathscythe looks, it's because he feels like death follows him around everywhere he goes (again explained in the EZ manga) and takes away everything that has given him kindness or meaning in his life. Conflating the two is purely an aesthetic thing, but it robs the meaning of what it was originally for
I also compared it personally to how the Gundam Pilots in Wing also carries a partt of Char's personality and struggles throughout the series even though Zechs was technically the Char Clone.

五飛は誰よりも優しくそれだけに真剣に本当の世界に取っての平和と正義に拘り続け答えを求めていた。その近しい存在がトレーズであって、形は違えど誰よりもお互いが似ていた。そして失ってからはトレーズの亡霊に囚われながら本当の答えを模索しながら彼は心を蝕み苦しめていた。ヒイロも先の戦争を通して本当の五飛の優しくも厳しい精神の持ち主と知っていた。だからきっと説いたんだろう。あの子とあの子犬をと。そもそもヒイロ達も未来を切り開く若者であって苦しみながらも葛藤し闘い続けた。その精神は自ずと疲弊して行ったのは言うまでもない。戦争とは本当に人がする行為としては如何に哀れな物かと身に染みて感じる。怒りや悲しみ、憎悪の連鎖しか産まない。ヒイロも五飛も闘いの中でどれだけ煮え湯を飲んで、その心を痛め付けて来たのだろうか、でなければ自分の命を安く見積もるはずなんてなかろうに。悲しいよな。何かを犠牲にしなければ成立しない世界なんて。
