"I have found the place where I am to die." This is the real sign of Packard's skill. He understands immediately that his opponent is just barely good enough to run out the time limit on Packard's mission, and that the only way to win is the sacrificial play.
@Mean Bob Well, that too. But the protagonists in Gundam universally have unlimited plot armor, and at least Shiro has the decency to act like a normal human being when he survives things you shouldn't without it.
@@bf5250 To be fair, Packard one, won the metaphoric war by eliminating the Guntanks (who lets be fair were positioned so damn poorly it's no fucking wonder they're all gone) and he could've very easily took out Amada after knocking out his EZ8, with the cover of the Mobile Suit and his Gouf's mobility he could've probably escaped from the other EZ8 gunfire too, he just figured it smarter to let Amada live so as to give him leverage, with the only thing him not taking into account was Amada getting his EZ8 up and running and being mad enough to tear his fucking arm off to attack immediately.
You can also just feel the weight of each mobile suit and how heavy they are. Newer iterations almost make it seems like they're doing acrobatic stuff but you can truly feel their limitations in this battle.
One of the reasons why I could never really get into gundam it just felt like generic anime sword fights but with mechs. I prefer stuff like knights of sidonia that actually go full sci fi tech. However I did read some of the original gundam stuff and it is a lot better than the new stuff
@@NeostormXLMAX….That honestly not true, maybe with some Gundam series, but not UC Gundam, Iron Blooded orphans, etc. If you haven’t tried watching the series imo, it’s better to try something than outright dismiss it.
What are you talking about. Iron Blooded Orphans, while better than some of the other series, is still very much a "sword fight but with mecha" style gundam show. Whereas 08th MS Team is a bit closer to real mecha, like Patlabor. Though I'd still recommend watching IBO, cause it's essentially the Gundam version of Gurren Lagann but more grounded.
@@redsabre69 Fuck yes man, it's been my favorite ever since I played that Federation vs Zeon on ps2 as a kid. Always just loved the look of the Zaku and it seemed like the most badass Zaku
What makes this show so much better than the other gundam shows is that the mobile suits have actual weight. And there’s more emphasis on how they would fight in the battlefield and tactics used.
I really enjoy seeing comments like this. In fact, there was a possible strike on this and talking to Bandai Sunrise they reversed it based on the comment section, etc. So at least I hope there's plenty of other places talking about this series enough for them to either release another remaster or maybe a new gritty/heavy series. :]
@@isocuda Honestly the refreshing thing about this series is that the gundam isn't some wonder machine, and we get to see grunts in the field. They need to make more shows where gundams aren't just super-robots mowing down grunts, and more where they're just tools in the hands of skilled people. The Gouf here is beloved specifically because Norris is an actual Ace.
+Alessandro Giuliani Good thing the Qubeley Papillon wasn't involved in the One Year War. That thing could have probably won the OYW all on it's own if Zeon built the thing (instead of it simply being a customized Gunpla used by Aila Jyrkianen in Gundam Build Fighters). That thing would have probably even stomped Amuro's Nu Gundam (and possibly even the Hi-Nu Gundam).
If you want things that could had changed the course of the one year war, look no further to the Neue Ziel which was intended to be built but they just couldn't afford it. And that's just for starters, there's so much stuff that was never built during OYW and the likes, and stuff that was smashed here and there, so yeah.
Packard was a classic fighter. Psychology, efficiency, measured use of resources and eye always on the prize. Of course, he has that noble zeon "knighthood" air about him. Salutes, seeking a glorious death, sparing the feelings of his lady. And a grudging respect to his adversary. Norris Packard is the best example I've seen of just why war is awful; he was by all measures an intelligent, conscientious, noble and driven man. And he died for nothing. Even his hard fought last stand doesn't save the Kurgaran. He believes he succeeds, and dies peacefully. But all that happened was a delayed massacre and the loss of yet another good man. War is hell, kids.
Gundam in general is a massive Anti-War message, you see how each Gundam Pilot, almost always someone who had no intention of joining a war in the first place is forced to fight, and suffers PTSD, stress, fear and loss as the series continues, it's a statement, War Is Hell, and it's not the people who are beaten who suffer the most, it's the people who set their lives aside to fight for what they think is right who suffer the most. You said it, War is Hell, surviving is even worse sometimes.
God I love that scene when Norris’s gouf casually lifts the whole highway off of him. It’s such a rare moment to see just how much pure strength these MS really have
That’s always been the thing with this fight for me, the 08th team treat their MS and Guntanks like they’re large infantry and tanks, respectively. Packard understands that a mobile suit is a unique weapon with unique strengths and weaknesses. It wouldn’t have even occurred to most other pilots that they *could* lift the bridge, but Packard knows the limits of his machine and how it interacts with the battlefield.
In the original Gundam, Amuro was trying to figure out the Gouf's capabilities and was disturbed that it outperformed the Zaku II by roughly 20% in every category, then later determined that he'd underestimated it; fortunately for him, the Gouf's 75mm finger machine guns just didn't have the power to really threaten his Gundam and that was its only shortcoming. The Gouf Custom has even better performance than the original Gouf, the longer barrels on the 75mm gatling gun mean greater firepower even though shooting the same ammunition, all combining into a package that, when piloted by someone who actually knows what they're doing is absolutely TERRIFYING. The MS-08 Efreet was an even higher performance derivative of the Gouf, but it was so expensive that they only produced eight of them... six of which survived the OYW, and at least one survived until UC 0096, where it absolutely wrecked much newer Feddie MS like the GM III. Heck, seeing a Juaggau tank a beam saber strike and just casually punch an MS to death shows what absolute beasts Zeon MS were in the OYW. The only reason we saw so many Zekes die in MSG is because the Gundam was protected by the best armor (and plot armor) and Amuro was simply the best pilot of all time.
Yes, it’s like the scene of EVA 02 lifting the battleship over its head and throwing it a short distance. A giant bio-humanoid mech, nonetheless even a Gundam, would be able to lift immense objects like that and I wish series used this more to create drama and cool scenes.
What I really like about this show is that it shows the machines as heavy, and that it is really trying to sell the believability of its world. Like how the Guntank rocks when it comes to a halt, to all the other little details sprinkled all throughout. Really wish there was a full Gundam series that really payed this much attention to detail and made the Gundam's more of a part of the grand war-effort and less of those super powered prototypes.
It's a question of money. All of those little details take time and therefore money to animate, which cant be done with the budget the have when they have to make an entire series. Also with the direction Gundam is currently moving, thing like this style of series is becoming rarer and rarer. Still Gundam THE ORIGIN has a similar feel to the combat to this in some areas especially the Guntank scene.
@@PS3NutHead The way I've heard it from art friends, it's usually studio morale that matters more than pure budget. Budget matters too, but two shows with the same budget but different levels of studio morale will be significantly better/worse in terms of their animation. I suppose OVA's also benefit from a less compressed schedule. It doesn't matter how much money you lavish some things can only be done so quickly. Sure, more animators can help, but then it's harder for the high level staff to keep track and provide adequate direction.
Also hes falling into the building the tank is in shots its and says he took it out like nothing hes an ace. really? for being able to shot the unmoving target BELOW him? lol
What scares me about it is hes prepared and hes ready to go out with a blaze of glory not a lot of soldiers can do that If they know their end is coming
I love how the tactics they imagine resemble actual tactics... cover, blind spots, distractions and diversions to go after actual targets to eliminate flanking and overcome numerical disadvantage... it's excellent storytelling.
Thunderbolt would be a good series to check if you haven’t already It does a good mix of both present and old school Kinda is required when you learned about the Zeon rival lead early on
@@sirbachelorboredmen1314 yeah I mean I like how it becomes their last resort to counter Io and his Gundam But as he points out after the battle and in his cell: Was the sacrifice of all your limbs worth beating me And as shown in the A Bao Que battle later on, it really wasn’t since once he was removed from his sniping role Even the high performance Gelgoog can’t compensate for Daryl’s mechanical arms
o . .k no he was aiming for the Guntanks because they would have targeted the evacuating Kergeren transport easily since it was slow to pick up speed. His mission was never to destroy the 08th MS team just the Guntanks they were protecting. Which he accomplished so he completed his mission hence he won, but dying = the losing part. However because of Ginias' selfish desires the Federation orders a GM Sniper to fire on the Kergeren and destroys it which ultimately defeats the purpose of Norris' sacrifice which means his death was in vain.
There's another detail to point out about the feeling of the combat being real, I didn't see yet. They run out of ammo. Not just them saying, "I'm almost out!" like a lot of media does. They did run out, then they had to improvise or switch to a secondary weapon. You might even note that the Gouf starts conserving his ammo during the second half of the fight, saving it for the last gun tank. Which is why he switched to his sword.
i also like how the Gouf doesn't just block the shots, he angles his shield as to deflect the shots. there is SO MUCH in this that feels more gritty and real than any other Gundam show
@@Silikus74 meanwhile newer gundam series are about blasting everything with lasers or deflecting lasers with uhh.....space telepathy power activated force field
Something else I noticed that makes him more impressive. Not only did he destroy all 3 guntanks, he also disarmed all 3 gundams. He disarmed Karen's with his cable and shoulder check combo, disarmed the second by shooting the cannon, and made Ez-8 exhaust its' weapons in the fight. By the time he was done, Norris had left just the three gundams with pretty much only beam sabers left.
It’s important to remember that they aren’t Gundams, they’re Mobile suits. It’s kind of like the Square = Rectangle thing. All Gundam are Mobile Suits, but not all Mobile Suits are Gundam. Edit: my mistake, these *are* Gundam, but they are “mass production” models. 👌

Packard is that one utterly dependable teammate who gets you the overall win not by going for “play of the game” personal glory, but by PLAYING THE OBJECTIVE!!
Browning does it better according to Japanese FPS stereotypes. Browning sets up the plays for the objective while Packard takes it himself even if he gets fragged
Seems 8th MS Team, 0080, and 0083 aimed to create new realistic, well rounded Gundam arcs. And they succeeded. They are the holy trinity of Gundam for me.
Gotta love the respect he showed at the end. They were enemies, and he beat them and gave his life for his mission. But still, Shiro saluted him and acknowledged just how strong that guy was.
@@jadenprice1463 It's even more impressive when you consider the *personal* stakes. Norris was a very selfless character, and fiercely loyal to Aina. He had a job to do and a war to fight, but he didn't want to take something precious away from Aina to do it. Norris' victory hits on so many levels and it makes it such a powerful scene even twenty years later.
I remember when I first saw this as a kid, I didn’t know what an “Ace” meant. Just from the context of this moment, all I knew it was something badass.
At least it made sense as to why this mf was so effective, aces are terrifying to go up against irl with tanks and jet fighters, imagine in fiction with gigantic ultra armed battlesuits
@@Nostroman_Praetor They were great overall in their theaters of operation. Also in the strat game series they are a godsend as a solid artillery unit that doesn't kill the feddies budget until you drive zeon back to space.
This scene always stood out to me, especially the very first time I ever watched 8th MS Team as a kid. The way they portray combat, the inventiveness of the Gouf pilot, the weight of the mobile suite, the sheer brutality of war. 8th MS was a masterpiece of the Gundam franchise, I wish there were more like it.
Man the moment shiro started to swing his own disabled armed out of complete desperation and the drive to survive and be with Aina by any means really did something to me as a kid and was honestly a turning point in my life and changed by perspective on live. May sound like a joke but this damn anime really helped be turn into a man before I was even in high school. Even the fact that the series didn't have some happy fairytale ending makes it mean so much to me.
08th MS team was such a great series. It felt grounded closer to reality than a lot of Gundam series, how quickly a person lives or dies in a war. It's also one of a couple that tells viewers that the federation is just as capable of inhumanity as zeon was. My favorite example was the commander sending in GM suits into a heavily mined tunnel, hoping to see their reactor go critical, causing a nuclear explosion and avoiding breaching the Antarctic treaty's no nuclear weapon agreement/
I agree up until the second you talk about the federation, in fact most gundam shows show the federation/alliance/wathever as unapologetically villanous to a degree and zeon/spacenoids as somewhat justified
Yes, especially with the 2nd guntank scene where after destroying the crew the way the gouf custom moves to the side with its thrusters and js so cinematic to show how humongous these machines are
The fact that its so heavy and can move so fast shows how much raw power these machines have and just makes them beyond cool and intimidating I'd shit my pants if I saw the Gouf that just got pancaked by a section of highway lift that shit up like it was nothing even if I was in the RX-78!
Norris stabbing the sword through the crew compartment of the guntank and having a geyser of blood spurt out will always stay with me as one of the most impactful scenes in all of anime.
@@wanderingaceminecraftandmo8034 Samurai Jack logic. If you can't get away with spraying blood everywhere, sub in motor oil. Now even the robot fights look unnervingly human.
Actually, I believe that's actually because one of the director of it died in the middle of the production. I'm not sure this is true or not, but from what I saw in the original mechanical designs, some of them are actually unused. So I assume the original plan for this series is actually longer than that.
@@nickford1286 haha I was just gonna comment this. One of the things I like the most about the game is how much slower it is than something like Mbon, which is good too.
_"Well, that _*_looked_*_ impressive... now say goodbye to your tank!"_ remains one of my favorite in-combat disses of all time. Goddam, Shiro, learn to shoot.
Could be wrong, but I think it had to do more with the nature of vulcan guns mounted on the Ez-8. Since the Ez-8 isn't an actual upgrade but rather an in-field mod/repair, it's vulcans guns aren't the normal Feddie MS standard/caliber. Personally, I always wondered why Packard dodged the 60mm vulcans from Karen's unit, but didn't flinch when it came to Shiro's light show. 🤔
@@IsaacIVMarc My reading was that he was experienced enough to know Shiro couldn't possibly aim properly while tearing down the silo with the Ez-8 shaking all over the place. It was the only move in this realistic urban battle that was straight out of a cartoon or super robot show, and in this 'real' environment it was bound to fail. Packard knew he had just as much chance of getting hit if he was sitting still with his shield up, as he would have if he tried to dodge what basically ended up being randomly aimed fire. I think Packard's commentary highlights this, making fun of how it *looked* good but noting it was completely ineffective.
@@iguanamoat I see what you're saying. In fact, I'm aware that's what Packard literally stated. However, you notice that in any Gundam series, mobile suits, even Gundams, very rarely plunge forward against vulcan fire. Going back to this instance, it seemed odd to stand still despite Shiro's barrage of vulcan- and machine-gun fire. In Gundam, pilots are constantly paranoid about losing a sub camera and gaining [another] blind spot. It may have had to do with the story writing more than anything, but were it Amuro, he would have definitely stood his ground, defending with his shield to avoid any "lucky" stray shots. Huge Gundam fan, so I notice these things. 😸
Norris is so good, that he actually angles the Gouf's shield to not absorb, but completely deflect fire. I think he is the only Mobile Suit pilot I've ever seen do that. He does it both times Shiro opens up on him with is 100mm. 4:59 & 6:39
In most cases, Aces in UC universe get shot at by Beam weapons, which just obliterate the shield. 08th is the few where they use mostly conventional weaponry
I love this scene, Packard is such a badass. The Gouf Custom is my favorite MS, and this scene shows just how fatal it can be if properly piloted. He danced around those other suits like they were bricks, it was almost no contest. And the only reason he died, while still technically winning and accomplishing his mission, is because he chose to. As much as I try to like the Gundams, and as much as I actually do like the RX-78, the Zeon suits, especially the Gouf, look cooler to me. They're all curves and sharp rounded edges, where the Federation suits are boxy/blocky, and plain-looking by comparison.
Funny, in general i like machinery which has the boxy, blocky, straight edges look. Its funny to read the exact opposite of my own opinion :) To each their own!
Jesus christ, what a fight scene... I only watched Gundam OO and Seed, I guess this is what it was like back then when mobile suits felt like an actual machine to pilot. Every action was deliberate, fatalistic, the amateurity that is displayed in the dialogue also felt very human. I loved this
Man, after all these years this is still one of my all time favorite anime battles. 5:46 being one of my favorite highlights, was powerful for me as a boy. Seeing the gouf do a warriors salute as Packard fires the flare, a sign of respect for his enemy and stalwart acceptance of the death he chose for himself to give a loved one a chance. Norris Packard, what a fuckin legend
I saw this in Toonami over s decade ago. I watched it late at night. The ending scene when he's standing there with crutches - one leg amputated- watching the sunrise with his lady was a tearful moment.
Yeah that is true the ez8 machine took a mean beating after the guy took on the apsarus mobile armor with just one hand, I guess the cockpit must've a blown up couple fuses around the cockpits seat and break area and also the roof area was broken too and probably the head was shot it must've been a nasty fall on the leg
Packard: I win!!! He said that because he did everything according to his contradicting desires. What a great man. Salute indeed, he's well earned it all the way
Every time I remember this scene I like to think that he spares her lover solely because he wants her to be happy. In my mind he's a far superior pilot, effortlessly taking out multiple units without sustaining any damage.
Hooded Knave It's a fairly common consensus and one I share. In the end, his objective was to destroy the Guntanks, not necessarily to come back alive. I think it's one of the few scenes where the literal subtitle translation fits the moment better, because the I won/I lost complex really hits home on the fact that the battle between the EX8 and Gouf really wasn't about who killed the other, but whether the strategic objective was met. Norris had a mission he was determined to see done, but he cared for Aina's own feelings and the war wasn't an eternal one, so he did the only thing he realistically could do to satisfy a conflict of interests, hence why "he won".
+IronSoul890 Honestly, I still find it sad that Norris had to die at all though, he was a good and kind man, and I kinda wish that he took out the third Guntank (accomplishing his mission) and then simply withdrew from the battle (since it's unlikely the 08th MS Team would have been able to pursue him considering how the Ez-8 needed both repair and resupply) to try and rendezvous with Aina later (possibly even coming to the Ez-8's aid against the Apsalus III).
Pyrrhic Victory... But they probably wouldn't have wanted to destroy the plane had they known it was full of refugees instead of soldiers and supplies.
7:00 Feints with the left wrist cannons. Shiro dodges to his left/Norris's right, so Norris will have to turn cross-body to get a shot off. Norris immediately switches to the right-hand electric whip and disables Shiro's arm.
I don't think it was a feint. Shiro was inching towards his beam saber, not sure if he could make it. Norris brings up his arm cannon to counter the beam saber. Shiro realizes that he will be at a disadvantage and tries to escape with his shield raised. But Norris has a way to deal with the shield.
@@Iritscen I don't think that he was going for his beam saber I think he was going to reload because the beam saber is located in the ankle not on the hip

Despite their portrayal as space Nazis, the Zeon forces were in the right the vast majority of the time. I fully grant you that their strategies were horrific, but they had essentially been made slaves by the Earth Federation. I think that Char was the only truly pure character from the original series, just because he wanted freedom for the colonies, and he wanted to kill the Zabi family, which was the origin of Zeon's darker ideals.
@@nathanjones6638 Zeon Deikun’s original vision of Spacenoid Liberation was pure. It sought a future free from Earthsphere tyranny. @@nathanjones6638 Totally right! I was so pissed off when in Char's Counterattack they completely butchered his character and dumbed him down to a genocidal tyrannical figure without even giving us an explanation on how he became like that.
@@MechanicalRabbits I don't know. In retrospect, I believe that Char made that sacrifice to ignite the fire of the New types. Consider that we learn the Federation had the 13th provision to the Universal Century Charter, wherein if "a new breed of humanity should come to exist as a result of colonization, then the spacenoids would receive independence, and suffrage within the Earth Sphere government. Since, up until that point Newtypes were either viewed as skilled pilots, or medical experiments in the case of Cyber Newtypes. It wasn't until the "Axis Shock," where several Newtypes united their powers to stop Axis from falling, that humanity was ultimately forced to recognize Newtypes, and once Laplace's Box was opened, it formed the foundation for colonial independence. So, I argue that Char never changed, he did everything to see his father's will made a reality.

That is why humanoid robot can have practically value and all FCS need to rely on more primitive technology like optical system. Which operate almost fully manual. Of course, in UC universe AI revolution did not take place like ours. So, pilot skill can in some sense compensate the different between suits.

I love the fear in his voice when he says " this guy's an ace" it's just you can see the revelation of they are now fighting somebody who is that much more skilled and that they have to up their game if they have a chance I don't know I just think it was really well handled
Right? It was also a great reversal of what we usually see happen in Gundam shows. Typically we're following the ace pilot as they slaughter their way through enemy grunts until they face off against other aces. Not 08th MS Team. Our heroes *are* the grunts in this battle.
Don’t understand how he got the idea he was an ace after blasting a non moveing guntank with a gattling gun at close range anyone could do that the stuff he dose afterwards is more ace pilot like that shooting a static target
@@VegetaLF7 I mean iirc Sanders is an ace on technical terms and Shiro qualifies for one too at the end of the series, we see him take out at least 5 MS/MA. However, Shiro against Packard is synonymous to a rookie ace going up against the god damn Red Baron, they're in different leagues.

The 08th Team are about as outmatched as possible, being a squad who has to rely on squad tactics to be expected to survive fighting basic enemy suits suddenly going up against one of Zeon's most decorated ace pilots. Shiro and Sanders might be technical aces, but Packard is an Ace with a capital A. They're damn lucky that Sanders focused solely on taking down the Guntanks and only tripped each other up along the way, Karen especially. So Shiro just keep blind shooting to create barrage try to force Norries get out the original position. You can see Norries make a side step to dodge the bullet rain that Shrio create.
Still the best. One of the things I love about how Mecha combat was presented in this series it was totally designed to simulate tank warfare. And the fact that the Guntanks were strategically the goal, directly demonstrates this. The scale of the mechas to the buildings, the way they interacted with the urban environment, how slow and deliberate each move and action felt, even the delay between particular actions (like Norris death to his victory) is masterfully done! No less from the crew that would shortly there after go on to work on Cowboy Bebop!
I wanted to point out that the motion Norris makes at 05:46 appears to resemble a present arms with a sword. It's a nice addition to the scene that seems to fit. Norris is showing his respect for his opponent.

The Gouf Custom was technically inferior to the 08th MS Team's Ground-Type Gundams, but Norris used his superior experience as a pilot and the surrounding environment to his advantage in order to tip the odds in his favor. Hell, if the Guntank even tried it Norris might have just blasted it with the Gouf Custom's machine cannons before the Guntank could even get a shot off. The fight was much too close-range for the Guntanks to be effective. Their armor is basically like paper compared to the Gouf Custom, Ground-Type Gundams, or the Ez8. Guntanks are exclusively long-range MS, they do very poorly at close range. If they were instead *Guncannons* it would be a different story, as a Guncannon is still formidable even at close range as they commonly came equipped with a Beam Rifle in addition to their shoulder-mounted cannons.
Agree to disagree because long range or not at that distance the gun would have easily hit its target and there is no way he would have dodged it unless he expected it... a guntank firing from.behind a building would be unexpected.
Yeah, it's kinda a golden era, at least for mecha. There was enough money in it for it to create impressive spectacle and stories, but there was still enough freedom to experiment and take risks. Tbh, for mecha, the 90s was a turning point between two stale eras, where everything was up in the air once again, which we hadn't really seen since the late 70s, and wouldn't again for over a decade.
ZeroStriker426 I got HOOKED ON JAPANESE ANIME in the 70s with the series called STARBLAZERS, and G - FORCE as a kid. Then when the Anime movie AKIRA came out... I simply overdosed on it. LOL ! And I have collected it ever since that first watching of it. I have the comic book series ( Akira ) tucked away and many, many more.
Really love how grounded in reality the mobile suits are in this series. They really felt like military equipment. Bipedal tanks if it makes sense. Not like some other mobile suit shows. Ones that make 67 G Direction changes and move from 0 to 400+ mph in .000076 seconds. Don’t get me wrong I love those too. (I especially love how Gundam heavy arms custom did that trapeze stunt in the air in Endless Waltz. Great stuff. Was burnt into my brain how amazing that scene was.), but to see military mechs moving like actual real military equipment feels so fresh and grounded that I never forgot it and still go back and rewatch to this day. Great series and great animation. They should be proud.
@@kirgan1000 they have a chilling scene in this series dealing with just that; in the jungle arc, a zaku is knocked down and swarmed by infantry, and the pilot activated an ap weapon. It looked like a type of "bouncing betty" style explosive. Shot away and directed a blast of... wires? Downward. Absolutely shredded those close by. But those kinds of weapons, if you have to use them, several bad things have happened already.
This is exactly why 8th MS team is my favorite Gundam, its all about tactics and planning ahead with these large lumbering machines rather than spectacle, but the animation quality was good enough to show the momentum and follow-through of each action and shows the weight of just about every action made.
Almost makes me want to watch the show. Love how the fighting isnt all flashy, its slow and thought out, just like the movements of the machines. It almost looks like a human moving, but there are little pieces of additional animation to really sell the idea that these are large machines fighting in a place made for humans.
It could very well also be the fuel from the Guntank. It reminded me of the old film Short Circuit 2 where the robot is injured and his oil is mistaken for blood.
5:14 - 5:22 My favorite scene in the series. We see him lift a little in his seat, and his shirt lift from his high fall. Also, the visual of him firing all of his guns as he falls.
I love how this scene demonstrates the enormous spectrum of what it means to be a good pilot. In shows where the protagonist immediately possesses superhuman powers like super speed, strength or flight, the growth of the character's skill is far less pronounced. This is a big problem with say, Dragon Ball Z. But in this scene, you have the protagonists feeling fairly confident with themselves, but are still piloting big clunky hunks of metal and it shows. This creates a power void in which to introduce a truly terrifying enemy that has capabilities far beyond what the viewer is accustomed to, and the raised emotional stakes that go along with it. Just brilliant.
A series review is being worked on for 202(3), I appreciate all of your support! (I'm probably lying to myself again, but maybe I won't scrap the script this time 😞 haha)
+Paz There's also Ral from GBF and GBF TRY who can go up against Meijin Kawaguchi and hold his own just fine in a customized Gouf (Gouf R35) and DOM (DOM R35).
Though I love Zeon, it's high command made a habit of wasting their best men on suicide missions, or stringing them out with no support. It's no wonder they lost the war. Norris Packard? Forced into a suicide mission to create an opening for his comrades to potentially escape (Spoiler: it was for nothing, basically everyone died anyways). Ramba Ral? Cut out of the political arena, ostracized, forced into military service, and then regularly refused support during his mission to eliminate the Gundam. Leading to his pointless and needless death. The Black Tri Stars? Uselessly flung at the Gundam yet again. The list goes on. Zeon's highly skilled, but limited manpower was drained needlessly in many operations like this.
The problem with Zeon is Zeon itself, the structure was almost Nazi which sounds cool but is downright Medevial in the way production was handled. I bet you that like the Nazis, Zeon was never able to utilize its resources anywhere near 50 percent of what it should've been due to infighting and corruption so bad that Russia would find it too much. Furthermore, it's actions against its neighbors (the other space colonies) turned valuable support to the Federation or neutrality instead of their arms.
I haven't a proper understanding of zeon, but to me at least they seem very much like the german army, a force of tactics. That being said they have cooler snipers, so I'm totally a zeon loyalist.I also wonder what the casualties of the war, the fedies lost a ton of civies but they never mention military casualties. It seems the fedies had better tech but still seem to lose countless mobile suits for small units of Zeon forces. Am I right in that?
@@tarektechmarine8209 ignore that, Zeon is basically coasting on being ahead of the trend for mobile suit construction. However, from what I've seen they have little in the way of support and their logistics are god awful. In a realistic world, Zeon would've been Russia invading Ukraine
@@tarektechmarine8209 Gundam: Universal Century 79 was based entirely off of WW2 and to an extent WW1. So you are right. Zeon is very much based off of Germany in those eras. Also, yes, while the Federal Forces enjoyed better technology (in some areas) and manpower. Their leadership was old, stale and corrupt. Making them wasters of their manpower that they could afford to spare.
It's so refreshing to see someone winning just because of experience and not some psychic ability. Makes the battle more even compared to a psychic with a better machine. Makes you realize on why one side hasn't snowballed into victory even with a superior machine.
Out of all of gundam, i feel this series really nailed the balance of weight and agility best. They look and feel like real warmchines, but at the same time, they can repel off of buildings and sprint down a highways. And no "Gods of the battlefield" type gundams slaughtering mechs like its a dynasty warriors game.
Well, it was. His mission was to destroy the tanks. Shiro's was to defend said tanks. Shiro lost this battle, despite destroying the enemy. Why? Because they lost all the tanks.
And if you think about it, Norris totally would have beaten Shiro had he focused only on fighting him. But once he found out who Shiro was he didn't even bother trying to attack him again. Norris you the real MVP
Wellllll, Ramba was fighting a far, far superior force. Gundams and Gundam Ground types is like a Gelgoog to a Zaku II. Guncannons are also tough as nails, as well as Guntanks. Guntank MPT's are rather shoddy. Also Ramba was piloting a far inferior Gouf. The finger vulcans proved to be incredibly clunky and inhibited Melee combat greatly, which was the Gouf's main stick.
Honestly, give me another whole series like this. No super weapons or prodigies, no super powers or miracles. Just men and women using the tools they have to win a war. Keep your Jesus Yamatos and your super sayians in mecha form, I want more gritty real robots.
meanwhile the direction todays gundam has taken...not a fan at all. IBO was fine... but the G-witch and build fighters...no fuckin thanks too much anime tropes
This fight scene really shows off the weight of Mobile Suits. Usually they weightlessly fly at super speeds, so it's nice seeing them lug around their weight like they're supposed to.
I maintain it's one of the few series that could be adapted to live action because at its heart it is a human story about war that happens to feature really cool giant robots that are actually treated like machines and used by normal people instead of psychic kids.
@@InfamousLegato that’s basically all of Battletech, but I wouldn’t want Hollywood touching it or Gundam in its current state at all. They’d ruin it in a heartbeat
The 2 parts of this fight that hit home. 1. Hearing the screams of the tank crews die, but not seeing their horrific last moments. 2. Seeing a Gundam being held as a hostage. A weapon of sheer power, being reduced to a useless coffin, with the pilot inside blind waiting to die. Yeah, I think Shiro is going to have PTSD later in life.

I really love the look of The Ez 8 :) I know it’s a Modified Ground Gundam, but it looks and feels militaristic. It’s looks like and feels like a walking tank and I love that.
The best thing about 8th ms for me. I's they don't use a over the top gundam. the destroys hundreds of enemies in like a minute an not get a scratch. This is purely grounded in a military sense using tactics, team work, and not tank the enemy using powerful mech, being a newtype, a coordinator, a innovator etc. There just normal enlisted soldiers fighting a war, with there wits bravery an a bit of luck an faith. It's stories like this help flush out that there are people aside from Amuro an Char fighting in the one year war.
Part of the reason the Ground type Gundam was upgraded like that because lack of spare parts. Slave Wraith also a modified Ground type Gundam also followed Ez8's alternative upgrade plan: use whatever parts to fix your Ground type Gundam.

Good thing the Qubeley Papillon wasn't involved in the One Year War.

Spoken like a man with firsthand knowledge.

@@jonah3936 He knows what his MS CAN do than what it was DESIGNED to do .
It's even cooler when you realize it was doing it with only one hand.
Really wish there was a full Gundam series that really payed this much attention to detail and made the Gundam's more of a part of the grand war-effort and less of those super powered prototypes.
matteste in space performance drastically increases
There is no need for the suffix "s" when the correct plural isn't "Gundam's" nor "Gundams," but simply *Gundam.*
Usually you need those fat OVA bucks for that sort of attention to detail. Not that I disagree with the sentiment.

That was oil and blood in my eyes. But it definitely was a pretty visceral MS kill than one of those beam saber ones.

Actually, I believe that's actually because one of the director of it died in the middle of the production. I'm not sure this is true or not, but from what I saw in the original mechanical designs, some of them are actually unused. So I assume the original plan for this series is actually longer than that.
+Guncannon well that definitely sucks, then again I suppose it makes sense for some of the pacing in this series.

When it comes to hitting his target, Shiro doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
My guess is Shiro betted Gouf Custom will take evasive action thus shot every direction besides where it was standing at, which didn't go very well
Could be wrong, but I think it had to do more with the nature of vulcan guns mounted on the Ez-8.
@@iguanamoat
I see what you're saying.
Yeah. That doesn't work when not getting shot at by guns, though.
But saying most people fired guns at Mobile suits....
It does work at least 70% of the time.
I mean it isnt UC but Shinn Asuka did that in his first battle with Kira Yamato when he threw his shield at Kira
That's such a neat detail on the animators' parts, too.
Federation Suits are supposed to look Mass Producted to contrast with the fancy full of Shiny things Gundams
I always loved the Zeon suits ever since I saw the original movies
The Zeon designs resembles Soviet/Russian tank while Feds are more like western tanks. That's how i see it.
Funny, in general i like machinery which has the boxy, blocky, straight edges look. Its funny to read the exact opposite of my own opinion :) To each their own!
What are you saying? A Federation Ball is the best mobile unit.
+IronSoul890
Honestly, I still find it sad that Norris had to die at all though, he was a good and kind man, and I kinda wish that he took out the third Guntank (accomplishing his mission) and then simply withdrew from the battle (since it's unlikely the 08th MS Team would have been able to pursue him considering how the Ez-8 needed both repair and resupply) to try and rendezvous with Aina later (possibly even coming to the Ez-8's aid against the Apsalus III).
Yeah but that's the through-text of all Gouf pilots, they're always decent people on the wrong side. It's a tradition.

You are 100% correct that it was the influence of Zabi family (spacenoid supremecists) that led the Principality of Zeon astray. The Origin does a good job of highlighting that fact.

@@shirosaki97 This is fair, the 08th Team aren't exactly a bunch of nobodies, they're all experienced and skilled enough to have qualified to be some of the first Gundam pilots the Federation ever fields, they're not exactly a group of nameless GM pilots here.

Maybe both
Chris Whitmer the scene before is showing the remaining of gouf, therefore it's most likely he was saluting Norris
Obhective reasoning for it being both: the shot of Norris's remains also includes the smoke from the guntank that exploded which was also in the same direction Shiro would have had to look to salute so it was still possibly both.
Subjective reasoning for it being both: he just failed to protect his guntank allies and he likely heard Norris mention he knew about Shiro and Aina given how Norris heard Shiro's marriage declaration which shocked him into taking his first real hit all battle.

@@zackraiden5875 The Gouf Custom was way too fast, and Norris was too experienced to get caught that easily. The moment Norris saw it aiming in his direction he'd have either moved to put the Ez8 between him and the Guntank (so that the Guntank couldn't fire at him without hitting the Ez8) or behind the abandoned buildings. Norris is an Ace pilot for a reason, and there's a reason the 08th MS team is freaking out a bit, they know Norris is much more skilled than they are.
Agree to disagree because long range or not at that distance the gun would have easily hit its target and there is no way he would have dodged it unless he expected it... a guntank firing from.behind a building would be unexpected.
man, 90's anime is soooooo good. Love the fight scenes.

Well said sir.
We need a Gundam show like this again. Just 12 eposodes of pure greatness.
With trained adult soldiers. No emotional, super powered teens.
@@DarksaberForce
I can see it.
What a champ, goes out screaming "Victory is mine!"
10:38 would be prime perfectly cut scream material
Ramba needs two Zaku backups Norris only needs his balls
First name Chuck
Wellllll, Ramba was fighting a far, far superior force. Gundams and Gundam Ground types is like a Gelgoog to a Zaku II. Guncannons are also tough as nails, as well as Guntanks. Guntank MPT's are rather shoddy.
Also Ramba was piloting a far inferior Gouf. The finger vulcans proved to be incredibly clunky and inhibited Melee combat greatly, which was the Gouf's main stick.
for god sake... Ramba only need 2 Zaku back up but if there are 10 Norris in 10 B3, they will all get wipe out by Amuro
MangDidge GG has a scenario that if you give Ral three doms, he gets the white base rekt and captured, only Amuro escapes.
Really, Ramba Ral not getting his Doms was a big cause of Zeon losing the war. Thanks a lot, M'Quve!
Honestly, give me another whole series like this. No super weapons or prodigies, no super powers or miracles. Just men and women using the tools they have to win a war. Keep your Jesus Yamatos and your super sayians in mecha form, I want more gritty real robots.
I recommend the anime muv luv alternative total eclipse, it has what you ask for in a certain way.
meanwhile the direction todays gundam has taken...not a fan at all.
IBO was fine... but the G-witch and build fighters...no fuckin thanks too much anime tropes
@@Matanumi Well I hope you don't forget Shiro Amado had one of the biggest plot armor gundam seirs
Did you just forget how Shiro dodging a Zaku rocket at point blank range and the ball vs Zaku
"No super weapons"
The Apsaras III:
I remember watching Gundam 08 Ms team back on Toonami years ago good old days
Yay another anime fan! Who grew up on it!!
3:42 one of the most badass / visceral scenes in any gundam series
This fight scene really shows off the weight of Mobile Suits. Usually they weightlessly fly at super speeds, so it's nice seeing them lug around their weight like they're supposed to.
8th MS Team is among my favorite Gundam OVAs. The animation never ceases to impress me to this day.
The world needs another 08th MS Team style series.
@@mrbigglezworth42 True.
@@mrbigglezworth42 I am very worried about the live action Gundam series coming soon to Netflix
@@mrbigglezworth42 Hollywood would woketify it and replace half the cast with blacks and trans
@@TheTruthIsGonnaHurt Back when I made this clip it was hard to find the right format of the uncensored version.
There's like a dozen different broadcast versions. Imagine it without Karen swearing or hearing the crews? Lol
Yo this model kit was sold out EVERYWHERE after this aired back in the day! My favorite anime 🔱
I still have an HG Gouf Custom to build that I need to get to.
09:38 the most perfect mecha animation. You can really feel the scale, weight, fluidity and power. Amazing series!
“This Guy…….is an Ace!!!!!” Always gives me chills.
What?Ace
This is why the Gouf is one of the coolest Mobile Suits ever.
It shows that in the hands of a good pilot, it can easily stand toe to toe with the likes of supposedly superior machines like gundams.
But those are just machines who hace the name
@@luciusmaximuuus4406 the ones in this series yes, but even in the original, the gouf gave the 78 a hard time too. I think there was a difficult one in Thunderbolt as well.
@@luciusmaximuuus4406 A Gundam is a Gundam.
But this is no Zaku, boy.
These gundams are just slightly better GMs. And Ez8 is up against a no-Zaku. lol
@@suiken3149
Well, yeah, but the Gouf pilot shows that a better pilot can make a huge difference.
All 3 tanks down. Mission Accomplished! Walking away was always only a luxury.
9:17 The smoothness of the movement with that dodge is so satisfying!
Not to mention the double function of the cable attack. A hit and a miss being equally useful.
He wants me to retreat, time to attack! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
hahaha leave it to shiro to out think the gouf right lol.
Edgar Quek dubs....
ghkdtjsqls11 nothing wrong with dubs. Toonami wouldn't be able to popularize Gundam with subs.
Edgar Quek well that LOOKED impressive
Edgar Quek no
"Well, that looked impressive."
I love the scene where Gouf takes out the second gun tank, the oil spurting up like blood was a nice touch, I also like how he uses pretty clever tactics like making a smoke screen or using the grappling hook
This English DUB is really something
Best land battle in any Gundam series
Just started this series and atm out of all of them this might be my favourite gundam series. The Gouf is my favourite model of built to date so badass
People can complain about the Romeo and Juliet plot of this show once, this is still the greatest fight scene in all of Gundam.
The whole Romeo & Juliet felt so unnecessary, but the combat sequences are always worth watching, they really look made by someone who understand Mech Combat, instead of Whoever directed the Gundam series with 28271 Shiny rays destroying 9178171 Mobile suits lmao
@E.LA.O that would be awesome, Mecha Urban combat is very overlooked
Whatever
It's much better than what Stardust Memory has
I really love the look of The Ez 8 :) I know it’s a Modified Ground Gundam, but it looks and feels militaristic.
It's named after a tank
Its why i like the Alex Gundam as well.
I can't tell you how many times over my life I've watched this fight scene, as AMV's/music videos, random pop ups. 2 of my favorite 0079 gundams as a kid till now..
The way he terrorizes them, it’s awesome man! I remember watching this ep as a kid and being left mind blown by the Gouf.
