After all, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Since childhood, Japanese have been taught to behave in public places and not to speak loudly in such a place. That ethnicity means that they don't like to cause trouble to people around them. There are people who want to quietly think and enjoy their meal alone, and it's not unpleasant just because they're eating against the wall, and even if they're eating with friends and family, they may seem too quiet for a foreign people, but they talk a lot. We’re just doing it quietly so that it doesn't bother people around us. I live in Tokyo, too, and over the past few years, the number of foreign tourists has increased tremendously, and I feel both good and bad. I want to live normally, but there are so many tourists now. The man at the standing sushi was teaching you how to immerse yourself in the eating culture. That's important to the Japanese, they want their culture respected i think its great.
Eather quiet or noisy is depending on the restaurant. when you eat at a quiet restaurant people tend to be quiet. When you eat at a very noisy restaurant people tend to talk laud. Before you say anything, do you get permission from the store to film? There's no mosaic on other people's faces either, which I found to be very rude.
I enjoyed your videos at the beginning, what drew me in was your wonderment of Tokyo and seeing how different it is from the West. My wife and I go to Japan every year, our favourite country so far. As your series went by it changed, you seemed stressed more and more especially after meeting up with your friend and his Uncle, I saw tension there that never went away, perhaps a solo trip would have worked better. The last video clearly showed no enjoyment, only stress, not sure what other people here in the comments are seeing but it was anything but enjoyment. Mocking the name of Takeshita street and being upset with the older man at the Sushi place over nothing then ranting incoherently as you push through the crowds was bizarre. Your continued use of a camera on trains and in restaurants while braying loudly is cringe worthy, I can see in the future, cameras being banned in more places because of this sort of behaviour. Also, If you’re sick, try wearing a mask as not to infect everyone around you. Appreciate that in good old London, the subways are dirty, the restaurant prices are insane and that you can be stabbed to death on the street by thugs for wearing an expensive watch.
I disagree that it was an incoherent rant about the man in the sushi restaurant. I was thinking aloud, exploring culture differences. This video was on the back of 14 full days back to back, filming and travelling with no days off. You’re good to spot the tension with the uncle haha. The channel is about me being totally real and authentic. Not everything is always going to be perfect, as it is in most 15-min long “Japan is the greatest” videos. I only wish I could capture the feeling of my first day in Tokyo and have experienced the same every day. Unfortunately, that’s not possible.

Oli Barrett, I am a Japanese living in Tokyo. I have watched all your travel videos in Japan. I personally enjoyed watching the videos very much. What you said in the first video, "Don't research too much, feel what you see with your own eyes", is the best part of travelling! Actually doing so exposes you to different values and brings you new perspectives. By the way, culture is a strange thing, sometimes it feels like a completely different thing. That can sometimes be tremendously stressful. Two weeks is far too short a time to get to know a country. You will know this, as you have travelled to many different countries. People get tired in different environments, so they can lose their perspective. Please don't look at some things and think they are all things. But everything you see and feel is real. I just want you to reveal that truth. Next time you come to Japan, try to find out exactly why this is so. I welcome you, and I'll be waiting for you in Japan!
Complain for the lack of communication and once someone spoke to you to communicate in the sushi place you refuse. Visiting the busiest part of Japan and getting stressed to see people busy and stressed. You came to play the lost in translation? I'm sure there are many unspoken rules but many of them are universal. Don't touch products if you are not buying. Don't talk aloud on the phone while in the train. It's that simple. Next time visit to a super small random village. You will see more human to human communication if that is what you like ❤
Thanks for your thoughtful comment! It's true, I'm not sure I would want to live in Tokyo, but I really can't wait to come back. It's the perfect place for tourists!
you have only seen famous tourist sights so you are too early to decide what is like living in Japan. it's like visiting London and try to understand the life in the UK. Please visit non-tourist places in ordinary cities or towns or villages.
The facial expressions of the Western foreigners around him were not so grim, but he was the only one who looked strange. The look in his eyes seemed strange, so I felt it was dangerous.😆😅
How was the food in Japan? I'm sure you've eaten a lot of sushi and ramen, but there are many other delicious things in Japan. But it can be hard to find them. There are Japanese RUclipsrs who introduce Japanese food to tourists. One way to do that is to check them out and make a reservation! They know a lot of good restaurants.
Yup. First shinkansen I took I sat in an unreserved seat as there were plenty. Did the same thing on my second shinkansen ride however because it had way less cars all the unreserved seats were full (Something I didnt take into account). Ended up standing in the toilet area along with about 8 other passengers for around 3 hours. Ever since then every time I rode a shinkansen I always reserve a seat.
Tak-a-sheet-ah, mate, ignorant not funny (though many think it, no one says it) there's also Makashita. Good video though. The aspect of someone with no prior research exploring. It amplifies the Culture shock. We eat raw fish in the UK, Tuna and Salmon mainly. The old guy was advising, its a polite way of correcting you.
I watched all your Japan videos. I’m fan. I thought Tokyo, Osaka and Kanazawa in 2 weeks was a super hard schedule. I would collapse. I go to Tokyo every day for work. It's true that it's not a good place to live. But it's also a place I really like. I understand your intention. I'm looking forward to your videos.
I would like to understand the country called Japan objectively, so I would like you to tell me honestly about this trip to Japan. Including comments etc.
I think Tokyo is a very special place in Japan. Because people are physically close to each other and it becomes difficult to secure personal space, give-and-take occurs. As a result, I feel that we have come to respect each other as individuals. As someone who finds interpersonal relationships bothersome, this kind of atmosphere actually makes me feel comfortable. Although Japanese culture tends to emphasize cooperation, there are many people who feel that individual freedom should be respected. The coldness of the city isn't all bad :) Japanese people may not show their emotions much. But often it is based on the desire to live comfortably with each other. I'm thinking hard about how I can tell the other person without being rude. If you ever come to Japan again, please enjoy it!
This is my first visit, and there are a lot of things I don't understand, and I think I might have accumulated stress, but the next time I visit, I will have this experience, so I may not feel as stressed as this time. Japan is long vertically from Hokkaido to Okinawa and Ogasawara, and the climate, food, atmosphere, etc. may vary from region to region. Please come and visit Japan again.
Nice video. But half of Japan's population is not only in the two areas of Tokyo and Osaka (Kobe, Kyoto), but also in the Nagoya metropolitan area. Nagoya is an independent and the metropolitan area is home to over 10 million people.
Thanks for the great video! By the way, I always feel like traveling with a camera in my hand tires my hands and reduces my enjoyment by half, what do you think?
I have lived in Shanghai before, and when I take public transportation, I often strike up conversations with strangers. That's not the case in Japan. Shared taxis, like the ones in China, are not common in Japan. Chinese and Korean people are more direct in expressing their intentions to others. Japanese people, on the other hand, are not very comfortable with expressing their own intentions. In China, you might find shop attendants knitting or playing cards while at work. In Japan, it's strictly prohibited for employees to play during work hours. Even within Asia, the rules can vary significantly.Seriously, this guy is a foreigner and can eat anything.
I think Japanese people are characterized by the extreme difference between the face they show to strangers they have never spoken to and the face they show to people in their community.People are individuals, but there is no perception of loneliness, because there is a perception that most people are a community with similar ethics.Perhaps that is why we have such a strong aversion to anything that is not like us, and we try to be the same by binding ourselves with rules, discipline, and manners, and feel secure. Our minds are rich, but we are also in a state of seclusion.
@@OliBarrettTravel You could at least blur out faces, or purposely not get a whole shot of every individual there; you're not even trying. So I'm complaining? Have you read the other comment from the Japanese person asking you the same thing? Have some decency.
@@Official-OpenAI He can turn down the camera and make sure you don't have other people's faces. Bro please just learn a few phrases of Japanese😂😂😂 Japanese people appreciate it so much when you make that effort because people really dont speak English there. I know in my country if someone rolls up speaking a foreign language at me expecting me to understand, it makes for a rude and uncomfortable interaction. If you have an extra hour you can use that time to learn 5 phrases on Duolingo! I love your channel but having been to Japan myself they dont like foreigners there as it is... lol. I like your energy and channel, just pleeeease try to learn a bit, you'll skyrocket your whole experience❤ Its also pronounced "Tah-keh shtah" not take-a-shit-a omg lol😂😉 Some helpful phrases: Kudasai (koo-dah-sye) Please Oishii desu (oy-shee dess) Its delicious Sumimasen (soo-mee-mah-sen) excuse me Gomen nasai (Goh-men Nah-sye) I'm sorry XYZ wa doko desu ka (XYZ wah doh-koh dess kah) Where is XYZ XYZ wa ii desu ka? (Wah ee dess kah) Is XYZ okay? (Is it okay if I XYZ) Peace and blessings✌️
@@wynn3077 Yes having been to Japan and being conversationally fluent in Japanese myself, I'd say that learning some Japanese is a must. Makes the whole experience a lot more pleasant💝
I'm sorry that Japanese people are so unfriendly and made you feel uneasy! Many people can only speak Japanese, so they may be a little scared of what to do if they talk to you. I think they will immediately open up to foreigners who can speak Japanese. But we don't hate them! We are especially happy when we see foreigners who are impressed and happy with Japanese culture. Also, the cities we visited were big cities (Tokyo, Osaka), so people may have been particularly difficult to open up to in Japan. I think people in the countryside will be a little more friendly. (Nozawa Onsen is...) Even for Japanese people, Tokyo is far from others and it feels rough. Basically, Japanese people are timid. Also, it's true that Japanese people may not be happy about having a camera rolling. Especially in busy cities. If you were sightseeing without a camera, you might not have been looked down upon. This is not just because you are a foreigner, but also for Japanese RUclipsrs. But I would welcome you to my town! Thank you for loving Japan so much. I'm sorry for any unpleasant experiences you may have had.
Hello.I like watching your video. The following is my opinion.(I don't know if it's correct) In the past, even Japanese people used to talk casually with strangers. However, around the 1980s, some terrible kidnapping incidents occurred. Since many Japanese people are anxious, the following idea has become widespread: ``If you talk to someone you don't know, they might think you're suspicious.''As a result, the current situation has arisen. I also sometimes feel envious of a culture where people feel free to talk to people they don't know.
@@OliBarrettTravel Wonderful sensitivity of Western foreigners.🦨🦡🐷Apparently he imagined the bubbles on beer. Japanese people are kind, so no one complained to him and left him alone.
I'm in my 30s living in Yokohama, but I've never been to TeamLab. So that's what I mean. Kanagawa prefecture (Yokohama or Kamakura) is more relaxed than Tokyo, and I would recommend Saitama prefecture (Kawagoe) or something like that. Each can be explored in about a day. If you are in Tokyo, go to the ginkgo trees in Meiji Jingu Gaien in the fall. There are many highly rated curry restaurants in that area. In spring, I go to Meguro River and Shinjuku Gyoen. This is so-called “hanami,” or cherry blossom viewing.
Nice to meet you. I watched all your videos about Japan. Thank you for coming to Japan. Many Japanese people comment on etiquette and manners, but you don't need to worry too much about it. There are many manners that even Japanese people find annoying, and it's almost impossible to learn all about the culture of a new country before you go. I'm glad that the number of foreigners from overseas has increased rapidly recently, but I think everyone is probably worried. In addition, Japanese people are shy, so they can't directly tell people off for manners. But most Japanese people want to help you when you're in trouble. Please come to Japan again. Thank you for the great video! Sorry for my poor English.
This is a delayed comment. I’m Japanese, born and grew up in Tokyo, and I’ve also lived in your home country, Britain, for nearly 15 years in total, in London, Surrey, and Dorset. You look like an Englishman from a rural area, don’t you? Based on my experiences in both Tokyo and some parts of Britain, observing the people who live there, I would say Tokyo might not suit you - just as the peripheral areas of Britain, filled with local English people with 19th-century mindsets, don’t suit me. If you’re looking for somewhere in Asia, you might feel more “at home” in a former European colonial area where you can feel more “comfortable.”
You say they dont say anything or you dont know what you are doing wrong in their culture because they dont tell you. But… That old guy was showing you Japanese etiquette and you get bent out of shape? Seems like he noticed you and the Aussie were tourists and was showing you how its done. Most tourists dont know.
I enjoyed the the first episode when you first arrived n Japan but you seem to have gotten more judgmental and bitter towards the end of your trip. Lots of complaining.
The old man at the sushi restaurant has a good impression of you. Japanese people have the ability to understand other people's feelings based on their mood, even if they don't express them verbally. So it's understandable
just Mac food why you got stressed? your stressed feelings , mostly you made it. you judge every things on your knowleges. selfcentred. please enjoy unexpected in your life. so far you are the gaijin for me.
Thank you for coming to Japan 😊 Japanese people have their own unique culture and personality. It was your first time in Japan, and I'm sure it was difficult because there were so many things you weren't used to. However, thank you for enjoying the various places and giving your honest impressions! ✨ Actually, in Japan, it is rude to jump in the camera when someone is taking a photo or recording a video. So, Japanese people avoid or are careful not to jump in your camera like a ninja. 🥷 We never hate you 🙆♀️ A lot of eyes are on you because we are interested in you. But we are shy 😂 It's confusing, right? 😂 So,don't overthink it, just enjoy it ︎👍🏻 Japanese people know and feel that you respect our culture︎👍🏻 Please continue your wonderful journey! ✈️ your video is awesome! and your amazing! big love from Japan🇯🇵 ※ Pardon my broken English.

Thanks for sticking around to watch the whole trip. All in all I really enjoyed my time in Japan and can’t wait to come back again 🙂

金払ってないのに指定席座ったのか・・・?日本人一番嫌うぞその行動。
とても面白かったです。わざとらしく褒めるようなことをせず、良いところも悪いところもありのままに話してくれてとても興味深かったです。

Thank you.. and welcome :)

I would like to understand the country called Japan objectively, so I would like you to tell me honestly about this trip to Japan. Including comments etc.
It's just a comment, but I'm interested in your opinion on the video, so I'd like to talk a little bit about it.
The coldness of the city isn't all bad :)
Japanese people may not show their emotions much.
But often it is based on the desire to live comfortably with each other.
I'm thinking hard about how I can tell the other person without being rude.
If you ever come to Japan again, please enjoy it!
I appreciate you sharing your perspective!
正直な意見でおもしろかったです!幸福に関する考察は海外の人目線で勉強になりました。

Even within Asia, the rules can vary significantly.Seriously, this guy is a foreigner and can eat anything.

so sad ur japan trip is over, enjoyed it a lot man. Keen to watch again if you go back
I think Japanese people are characterized by the extreme difference between the face they show to strangers they have never spoken to and the face they show to people in their community.People are individuals, but there is no perception of loneliness, because there is a perception that most people are a community with similar ethics.Perhaps that is why we have such a strong aversion to anything that is not like us, and we try to be the same by binding ourselves with rules, discipline, and manners, and feel secure. Our minds are rich, but we are also in a state of seclusion.
Actually that hostel looks pretty good and the location is good too
its cause you have no respect with their privacy. You need to stop filming in trains or in restaurants. Yikes.
Have you questioned why you are watching? No one would watch if the only clips were me walking around the streets. Or are you just here to complain?
@@OliBarrettTravel You could at least blur out faces, or purposely not get a whole shot of every individual there; you're not even trying. So I'm complaining? Have you read the other comment from the Japanese person asking you the same thing? Have some decency.

I love your channel but having been to Japan myself they dont like foreigners there as it is... lol.
I like your energy and channel, just pleeeease try to learn a bit, you'll skyrocket your whole experience❤
Its also pronounced "Tah-keh shtah" not take-a-shit-a omg lol😂😉
Some helpful phrases:
Kudasai (koo-dah-sye) Please
Oishii desu (oy-shee dess)

Sumimasen (soo-mee-mah-sen) excuse me
Gomen nasai (Goh-men Nah-sye)

@@wynn3077 🫤 wow if that's true I just don't understand wasting such a wonderful opportunity to learn through immersion
@@wynn3077 This is probably because Chinese is easier for Europeans than Japanese.
@@wynn3077 Yes having been to Japan and being conversationally fluent in Japanese myself, I'd say that learning some Japanese is a must. Makes the whole experience a lot more pleasant💝
@@wynn3077 I totally agree. They appreciate effort and I don't blame them ☺️✌️ I love Japan!

The following is my opinion.(I don't know if it's correct)
In the past, even Japanese people used to talk casually with strangers.

Beautiful Japan can offer you much more if you visit local areas, tourists don't choose Kyushu as a destination but worth to travel.
That’s what I’ll be doing next time for sure
That's crazy. That capsule hotel is owned by a former co-worker of mine from Tokyo.

あなたのビデオは正直だから好きだわ。次のビデオも楽しみです。素敵な旅を👍

Your English is amazing! Thanks for your lovely comment, it means a lot
Love these longform videos.

You looks really mentally tired and stressed😵
