I have to say, this is the most real vlog I've ever seen. No annoying music like most travellers use. Instead you fill it with live talking and impressions. There were lots of interesting thoughts popping up like, do the japanese realise how cool their cities really are etc.
I traveled to Japan twice last year solo...Only ever been to Greece (twice) which was organised and sorted by late partner...I spent 3 weeks in Japan in Jan 23 and 2 weeks in late Nov early Dec...I stayed in Tokyo and then traveled as far south as Kagoshima..and stopped of at Kumamoto, Hiroshima, Osaka and Kyoto on my way back to Tokyo...I pretty much walked everywhere unless using the Shinkansen between stays...I dont speak a word of Japanese and had never booked a trip in my life. (56 in a few weeks)...I did use the trains abit more on the second trip...As I stayed in the Yokohama and Tokyo area. I loved Japan...And wish I could return...But I truly wish I could of had my late partner with me...She would have loved it also.
Japan is intimidating, but it's a really great place to visit! The Tokyo subway is far easier to use than the unreliable buses we have in Auckland, New Zealand.
While there are foreigners who come to Japan and behave inappropriately, you are genuinely enjoying the streets and culture of Japan, which makes me happy as a Japanese. Please come to Japan again!

Hello, I just randomly ran across your channel because it popped up in recommendations and your thumbnail caught my eyes so I thought why not. I'm a Japanese guy used to live in Japan but now living in Vancouver, Canada for 30 years and I miss Japan a lot these days so I've been following many channels from Japan (both by Japanese and foreigners) and I just hit the sub button for yours as well but just noticed you are still brand new on the channel, am I right? Considering that, I think your video is quite good and impressive. You gave me an impression of having already hundreds of thousand subs but literally you are spanking new! LOL! Good on you. What I liked and enjoyed about this video was your genuine excitement and honest comments on what you felt and thought as you were walking through the streets in a foreign country. It is my home country so many things in the video is "normal" and is nothing out of ordinary stuff but it still also gave me the similar sense of excitement like you as I've been living outside Japan now for so long. It's nice to see the current Japan/Tokyo in details what's going on. What is also very interesting and a lot of times I thought it was funny, it made me chuckle with your honest and pure reactions/excitement and comments. It was nice to see your point of views with different details about certain things with Japanese people or some stuff (like signage or buildings...etc)because you are coming from the western world and I do understand the both sides now. There were so many times how much I wanted to be there inside of the camera to help you at certain points when you were struggling how to buy ramen or tickets for the ride to trains...etc. But you did quite well in the end and I'm glad many Japanese people tried to help you even though their English wasn't very good. It was a super enjoyable video watching the entire time and I could have watched even more. It took me back to the time when I was living in Tokyo (specifically in year 2005 when I was working in Tokyo for a year, going there from Vancouver, Canada but I ended up moving back to Canada afterwards as I couldn't take the stress working intensely in Japan all alone in a typical Japanese company....as you can imagine as a Japanese person! LOL!) It was also very nice to see you trying to respect the culture and people as much as you could. Oh and that reminded to tell you why perhaps many restaurants and businesses don't seem to appreciate cameras inside. This is my guess but I still believe there is some good reason to this, and what it is that recently there have been some terrible incidents by some foreign RUclipsrs came to Japan and you probably heard about "Johnny Somali" guy from the US, and particularly he caused a lot of damage and upheaval to the RUclips business or to particularly to other foreign RUclipsrs in Japan because of his unbelievably terrible behaviours during his stay in Japan which left a very bad taste and impression on foreigners or foreign RUclipsrs with many Japanese people so unfortunately. (If this is the first time to hear about the guy, you can check many videos and articles talking about him when you Google his name.) So I think it has to do with that guy and some other similar crazy stupid RUclipsrs caused the harm forever. So I do thank you for showing a lot of respect and just being descent nice pleasant foreign tourist during your visit in Japan. When traveling to Japan, just saying a few words such as greeting ``Konnichiwa'' and thanking someone ``Thank you very much'' will make the other person happy. Many Japanese people do not speak English.
The world can be roughly divided into two parts. It is Japan and other countries. I stayed in Japan for a few weeks, but every day was so beautiful and wonderful and fulfilling that I had the day to return home in no time. After a few days, I had very mixed feelings. Why didn't my country become like Japan?

No country is perfect. I adore Japan very very much, I had similar feelings like yours. Why can't my country do something better like Japan shows? Then again, we cannot change everything as it would erodes our own identity. In the end, I like my country to learn a few good things from Japan, but chart its own journey with its own identity.

I was just scrolling through videos when this vlog caught my attention. It feels so natural, as if I’m experiencing every moment of Japan alongside you. I’m British too, and visiting Japan has always been a dream of mine. Thank you for sharing this insightful video-it makes me feel like I’m right there in Japan through your journey!
One point to note is that when filming on private property, it is better to ask permission in advance to avoid causing problems and to give a sense of integrity. It is recommended not to film other people in closed spaces, e.g. on trains.
Tip is not required in Japan.If a clerk receives a tip, the cashier's calculations after closing will be disrupted. Some people are reluctant to accept excessive amounts of money from customers. So there's no need to tip. It's nice for store staff to hear a heartfelt thank you from a customer.
The reason for the no picture/filming signs is due to Japan's extremely strict privacy laws. You're actually supposed to blur out faces unless you get each persons permission to show any representation of them on any media platform, including youtube. If they can be recognized in any way shape or form on any media without their consent, it is a violation of privacy laws, which is why a lot of shows in Japan, especially the NEWS, blur out most of what they're filming. For restaurants/stores, you're supposed to get permission to film inside. For receipts at stores, see the little box of receipts (e.g. at 7-11) below where the receipt pops out, put yours in there if you don't want it. You leaving it dangling in the 7-11 cash register is rude for the next person who has to deal with the receipt you left to get theirs. Money trays at the register, you put your money in the tray. Don't hand the money to their hand. If you see a tray, and there will always be a tray, use the tray. Tipping..., as a US expat, I love the fact there is no tipping culture here, especially now with how ridiculous it's gotten. Leave that garbage culture out of Japan. And yes, it is somewhat insulting to them since they're just doing their job. The idea might be different today, but tipping has a dark legacy.
When I visited London for the first time alone, I had a similar feeling to become excited from inside because of many places knew trough movies and books, music. Wish you could enjoy Japan and be a good ambassador to other guys
I admit when you arrived at your capsule room area, the first capsule you pointed at with your camera, I thought was a cupboard for your shoes! I am planning to visit Japan for the first time in March 2025. So I'm 100% sure I will have the same wide-eyed amazement about every single thing I see there. I am open to stay at a capsule hotel, maybe just one night of the 2 weeks or so that I intend to be in Japan. When I think of Japan; vending machines everywhere within reach, capsule hotels, huge network of trains and food/drink outlets as far as the eye can see.... I'm grateful to live vicariously through you in preparation for when it's my turn! 🎉

Hello! Thank you for coming to Japan! I am Japanese myself. I am a local near a ramen shop. I would like you to share something that I have been curious about with your friends and acquaintances. Old-established eateries operating in residential areas with few tourists and where locals are lining up are undoubtedly delicious! However, those who line up in places far from the city prefer a peaceful meal. For many Japanese, they are more likely to feel discomfort from sudden interviews than to benefit from increased customers due to being filmed. Being looked upon favorably often stems from the respect shown to the other person. Also, the further away from the city, the more likely locals are to become upset if you don't talk to them beforehand. To avoid this, I recommend communicating with the staff and nearby customers properly before filming. Even if you don't speak the same language, taking the time to communicate in segmented phrases until you are understood will lead to better treatment. This applies to most Japanese people. I’m Japanese. I had a brief experience working in the service industry in Japan. At the end of each business day, I had to report sales figures, which involved reconciling cash in the register with the figures recorded by the machine. Any discrepancies had to be reported to my supervisor, which was quite troublesome. I guess that’s a reason why the worker didn’t receive the tips
In Japan, it is common to use an IC card ticket.That is also very convenient for travelers. you can go through the ticket gate just by touching it. It's very efficient
Those little restaurants have been around for decades. Just recent years, they became tourist attractions. I think the owners still want to make sure locals who have been coming in the restaurants and bars feel comfortable without worrying about their privacy to be exposed. That may be a big reason why lots of places ask you not to film! Sorry if you felt rejected!!

Welcome to Japan! I LOVED your positive energy you gave through this trip... Although it is sad that some people gave you a frowned face. That's actually because you're filming strangers. In the ramen store you can notice that a lady next to you is giving uncomfortable vibe (the man next to her as well.) It is a little-known fact that PRIVACY is really important for Japanese people (they're shy, you know). Peolple hide their face with emojis even when they post their picture on X, avoid using their real names, and don't want to be on camera without permisson(including me). They won't tell you directly to stop filming because they know you're foreigner, and they don't want to sound rude. Keep in mind that privacy concerns are really different in this country, so I would advice all the foreigners planning to visit Japan to try avoiding random passengers' faces when you film!

I'm Japanese and I understand you might be confused if you come to Japan from a country with a tipping culture. most restaurant employees in Japan are forbidden by their work rules to receive additional money from customers (whether it is as a tip or not), so the two staff members in your video were just confused cause they couldn't explain it in English very well. they weren't offended by your tipping, you know. FYI, the male staff member at 1:11:00 is saying "we can't receive a tip. instead, so please donate to the shrine if you like.". payment methods in Japan are a bit complicated, but for travelers who want to pay for public transport or small purchases with a smartphone, I strongly recommend setting up a SUICA App. even so, there are still some stores that only accept cash, and it's really troublesome. I'm a little surprised that you went to Nagayama, cause the ramen restaurant you went to is the kind of place that Japanese core ramen lovers prefer rather than travelers. I like the oily soup of that ramen too, and it makes my stomach upset every time lol. have a nice trip!

日本人からすると、チップのような行為は「施し」に感じてしまうのだよな。
だから、海外に行ったときも渡すときはソワソワする。
チップを受け取る側の気持ちがわからないから。
是非、チップは不用ですが、サービス料金は人件費とし給料に反映されていますから、出来るだけ飲食・買い物をなさって下さい。其れが店員さんに反映されると思います。
(飲食店では、オーダーしたメニューを残さず食べて感謝の意を示して下さいね。レジ精算の際は、美味しかったですと日本語で伝える事で良いですよ。買い物の際は、沢山買って下さい。レジで精算の際は、有難うと日本語で話すと良いですよ。)
食事は、箸🥢に慣れていないなら、利き手に🥢を持ち逆の手に丼や🍚御飯の御茶碗を持って食べるとテーブルに食べ物を溢さずに美味しく食べれると思います。食べ難いなら、店員さんに『大きなスプーン🥄を下さい』と御願いしてスプーン🥄で食して下さいね。(来日する前に有る程度🥢箸を使う練習をして欲しいと思います・簡単な気持ちを伝える事が出来る日本語を覚えると来日した際に感動を沢山得る事が出来ると思いますよ。)

旅先で見知らぬ隣人に助けてもらったり、カルチャーギャップに戸惑ったり、ちょっとした後悔を伴う失敗をやらかす事も含めて、全てが旅の思い出。
充実した日本旅行を満喫している様子が、見ていて気持ち良い。

個人で貰うのはルール的にNGだから、店の責任者に色々と事情を説明する手間が増えちゃう。

チップは財務省が税金を完璧にとるために国家方針としてない文化を作ろうと奔走している。３０～５０年くらい前は普通にチップに近い概念は日本にもあった

たまに日本人が外国人に大して冷たいと思ってしまう外国人がいるかもしれないけど、その人たちは冷たくしている訳じゃなくて多分英語が話せないことで相手に迷惑になってしまわないかが不安と言うだけだと思うから日本に来てそういうことがあっても気にしないで欲しい。

私も今日、田舎から東京に初めて観光に来てあなたと同じ感想です。なにもかも新鮮でわ～おとついつい口に出してしまいました。雨で傘を持ってない自分を傘にいれてくれたり風で飛ばされた帽子をわざわざ車から降りて拾いに行き老人に渡しに走りました。それを見た時やっぱり日本人だわーと思いました😊

Hello, I just randomly ran across your channel because it popped up in recommendations and your thumbnail caught my eyes so I thought why not. I'm a Japanese guy used to live in Japan but now living in Vancouver, Canada for 30 years and I miss Japan a lot these days so I've been following many channels from Japan (both by Japanese and foreigners) and I just hit the sub button for yours as well but just noticed you are still brand new on the channel, am I right? Considering that, I think your video is quite good and impressive. You gave me an impression of having already hundreds of thousand subs but literally you are spanking new! LOL! Good on you. What I liked and enjoyed about this video was your genuine excitement and honest comments on what you felt and thought as you were walking through the streets in a foreign country. It is my home country so many things in the video is "normal" and is nothing out of ordinary stuff but it still also gave me the similar sense of excitement like you as I've been living outside Japan now for so long. It's nice to see the current Japan/Tokyo in details what's going on. What is also very interesting and a lot of times I thought it was funny, it made me chuckle with your honest and pure reactions/excitement and comments. It was nice to see your point of views with different details about certain things with Japanese people or some stuff (like signage or buildings...etc)because you are coming from the western world and I do understand the both sides now. There were so many times how much I wanted to be there inside of the camera to help you at certain points when you were struggling how to buy ramen or tickets for the ride to trains...etc. But you did quite well in the end and I'm glad many Japanese people tried to help you even though their English wasn't very good. It was a super enjoyable video watching the entire time and I could have watched even more. It took me back to the time when I was living in Tokyo (specifically in year 2005 when I was working in Tokyo for a year, going there from Vancouver, Canada but I ended up moving back to Canada afterwards as I couldn't take the stress working intensely in Japan all alone in a typical Japanese company....as you can imagine as a Japanese person! LOL!) It was also very nice to see you trying to respect the culture and people as much as you could. Oh and that reminded to tell you why perhaps many restaurants and businesses don't seem to appreciate cameras inside. This is my guess but I still believe there is some good reason to this, and what it is that recently there have been some terrible incidents by some foreign RUclipsrs came to Japan and you probably heard about "Johnny Somali" guy from the US, and particularly he caused a lot of damage and upheaval to the RUclips business or to particularly to other foreign RUclipsrs in Japan because of his unbelievably terrible behaviours during his stay in Japan which left a very bad taste and impression on foreigners or foreign RUclipsrs with many Japanese people so unfortunately. (If this is the first time to hear about the guy, you can check many videos and articles talking about him when you Google his name.) So I think it has to do with that guy and some other similar crazy stupid RUclipsrs caused the harm forever. So I do thank you for showing a lot of respect and just being descent nice pleasant foreign tourist during your visit in Japan. I wish you all the best and safe trip and I'm looking forward to watching your future videos. Please go back to Japan again to see more about my home country. Cheers!

"hello"や”thank you"などの簡単なあいさつであれば多くの日本人に対しても英語で通じますが、日本人は海外の方が日本語を使って伝えようとしてくれる事に対して大きな好感を持ちます。それらは友好的なコミュニケーションの手助けとなると思います。
SIMカードは、決して、高く売り付けられたわけではなく定価なのだと思います。
日本人でも、物には定価が有るのは解ってるけど、少しでも安い物を探したりして購入してます。
ただ、これに限らず手間暇が省けるのなら少々高いなと感じても購入したりもします。
限られた予算での旅行は大変かと思いますが、日本を楽しめたら幸いです😊

I stayed in Japan for a few weeks, but every day was so beautiful and wonderful and fulfilling that I had the day to return home in no time. After a few days, I had very mixed feelings. One point to note is that when filming on private property, it is better to ask permission in advance to avoid causing problems and to give a sense of integrity. It is recommended not to film other people in closed spaces, e.g. on trains.

Tip is not required in Japan.If a clerk receives a tip, the cashier's calculations after closing will be disrupted. Some people are reluctant to accept excessive amounts of money from customers. So there's no need to tip. It's nice for store staff to hear a heartfelt thank you from a customer.

The reason for the no picture/filming signs is due to Japan's extremely strict privacy laws. You're actually supposed to blur out faces unless you get each persons permission to show any representation of them on any media platform, including youtube. If they can be recognized in any way shape or form on any media without their consent, it is a violation of privacy laws, which is why a lot of shows in Japan, especially the NEWS, blur out most of what they're filming. For restaurants/stores, you're supposed to get permission to film inside.
For receipts at stores, see the little box of receipts (e.g. at 7-11) below where the receipt pops out, put yours in there if you don't want it. You leaving it dangling in the 7-11 cash register is rude for the next person who has to deal with the receipt you left to get theirs.
Money trays at the register, you put your money in the tray. Don't hand the money to their hand. If you see a tray, and there will always be a tray, use the tray.
Tipping..., as a US expat, I love the fact there is no tipping culture here, especially now with how ridiculous it's gotten. Leave that garbage culture out of Japan. And yes, it is somewhat insulting to them since they're just doing their job. The idea might be different today, but tipping has a dark legacy.

I admit when you arrived at your capsule room area, the first capsule you pointed at with your camera, I thought was a cupboard for your shoes!
I am planning to visit Japan for the first time in March 2025.
So I'm 100% sure I will have the same wide-eyed amazement about every single thing I see there.
I am open to stay at a capsule hotel, maybe just one night of the 2 weeks or so that I intend to be in Japan.
When I think of Japan; vending machines everywhere within reach, capsule hotels, huge network of trains and food/drink outlets as far as the eye can see.... I'm grateful to live vicariously through you in preparation for when it's my turn! 🎉

Hello! Thank you for coming to Japan! I am Japanese myself.
I am a local near a ramen shop. I would like you to share something that I have been curious about with your friends and acquaintances.
Old-established eateries operating in residential areas with few tourists and where locals are lining up are undoubtedly delicious! However, those who line up in places far from the city prefer a peaceful meal.
For many Japanese, they are more likely to feel discomfort from sudden interviews than to benefit from increased customers due to being filmed. Being looked upon favorably often stems from the respect shown to the other person. Also, the further away from the city, the more likely locals are to become upset if you don't talk to them beforehand.
To avoid this, I recommend communicating with the staff and nearby customers properly before filming. Even if you don't speak the same language, taking the time to communicate in segmented phrases until you are understood will lead to better treatment. This applies to most Japanese people.

I’m Japanese. I had a brief experience working in the service industry in Japan. At the end of each business day, I had to report sales figures, which involved reconciling cash in the register with the figures recorded by the machine. Any discrepancies had to be reported to my supervisor, which was quite troublesome. I guess that’s a reason why the worker didn’t receive the tips

Those little restaurants have been around for decades. Just recent years, they became tourist attractions. I think the owners still want to make sure locals who have been coming in the restaurants and bars feel comfortable without worrying about their privacy to be exposed. That may be a big reason why lots of places ask you not to film! Sorry if you felt rejected!!
It was never an issue as people always asked nicely. I always got the feeling that it was coming from a good place!

This is a very realistic solo journey. It's interesting because it conveys the excitement of being in a foreign country and the anxiety of the unknown.
There are many places in Japan where you are not allowed to take pictures. It is written at the entrance.

Welcome to Japan! I LOVED your positive energy you gave through this trip... Although it is sad that some people gave you a frowned face. That's actually because you're filming strangers. In the ramen store you can notice that a lady next to you is giving uncomfortable vibe (the man next to her as well.) It is a little-known fact that PRIVACY is really important for Japanese people (they're shy, you know). Peolple hide their face with emojis even when they post their picture on X, avoid using their real names, and don't want to be on camera without permisson(including me). They won't tell you directly to stop filming because they know you're foreigner, and they don't want to sound rude. Keep in mind that privacy concerns are really different in this country, so I would advice all the foreigners planning to visit Japan to try avoiding random passengers' faces when you film!

I'm Japanese and I understand you might be confused if you come to Japan from a country with a tipping culture.
most restaurant employees in Japan are forbidden by their work rules to receive additional money from customers (whether it is as a tip or not), so the two staff members in your video were just confused cause they couldn't explain it in English very well.
they weren't offended by your tipping, you know.
FYI, the male staff member at 1:11:00 is saying "we can't receive a tip. instead, so please donate to the shrine if you like.".
payment methods in Japan are a bit complicated, but for travelers who want to pay for public transport or small purchases with a smartphone, I strongly recommend setting up a SUICA App.
even so, there are still some stores that only accept cash, and it's really troublesome.
I'm a little surprised that you went to Nagayama, cause the ramen restaurant you went to is the kind of place that Japanese core ramen lovers prefer rather than travelers.
I like the oily soup of that ramen too, and it makes my stomach upset every time lol.
