Something to bear in mind with Japanese horror versus western horror in general: The idea that you can find a way to put a restless ghost to rest does not exist in J-horror the same way it does here. Finding the ghost's unfinished business, seeking justice, burning down the place they haunt -- not a thing, will not fix it. The spirit world is so much bigger than the living world, and once a restless spirit, especially one that's been corrupted by whatever was done to them, decides it wants you, that's it. No escape. You're dead. This was a major point of interest in the early 2000s, which was why American remakes of J-horrors were so popular for a while -- it was super different until it was the only thing Hollywood was making in the horror genre. It's nice to go back now and look at it with fresh eyes now that the market isn't so saturated with it.
Agreed. Always loves that about J-horror. It's not about solving or surviving it. It just is.
Are you sure? I thought that there were Buddhist Rites that could be performed to put a Ghost to rest?
Actually nevermind I did more research and it appears that specifically Onryo can’t be exorcised but other ghosts can.
@@bronzecobra8556nice research! Tell that to all the other ppl. Who react to the Ring/Grudge thinking they can exorcise these spirits lol
@@bronzecobra8556that's actually terrifying
This is one of those movies that a lot of people say aren't scary but I was absolutely mortified. I think its because I saw it opening night with a theater full of screaming teenagers. Everything is so much scarier when people are screaming.
Nostalgia helps
The original is just better
I saw this movie when it came out when I was 10, and it put the fucking fear in me lol. I was absolutely petrified of the twilight hour leading to night, and I still to this day refuse to pop my head up into any attics lol--I like my jaw attached, thank you very much!
You're kidding me? That f*cking lady with no jaw is scarier than the entirety of the Ring series.
@@アキコ2003 yeah definetly like the original more, this is good, but for some reason the beat for beat parts like her crawling down the stairs is freakier in original.
As a fan of the original I thought both were pretty scary in different parts. I also had to live in a haunted house making me prone to fear ghost stories more then some.
Kayako was Obsessed with Peter because he was her son Toshio's teacher and he was nice. She idealized him where as you saw her husband was abusive. And on top of being abusive, when her husband found the diary, he became convinced that she had and an affair with Peter and Toshio was actually his son and thats why he killed both Kayako and Toshio. I actually wish you had watched the uncut version because it showed a bit more in the flashback. The husband was hanging but he was hanging by Kayako's hair. He was her first victim. And the banging was Toshio swinging his legs into the wall. Also, it actually showed that when he broke Kayako's neck Toshio saw it and she was still alive when he stuck her in the attic. Its why she was so angry because she was paralyzed and couldnt save her son from her husband. The sound she makes is her death ratttle from her neck being broken. Itts also why she moves and crawls the way she does.
Actually Peter was Kayako's teacher. Not Toshio's.
@@killuanatsumeCorrect, this person mixed up the canon of the original, where the teacher (there called Kobayashi) was Toshio’s teacher.
The craziest thing about this movie for me is that it came out 20 years ago ...really?? Time flies...
I just sprouted a few more grey hairs. : D
These movies terrified me as a kid and still unsettle me even now. There's no chance of survival which is the ultimate despair, and she can literally appear *anywhere* in order to get you. Both the og Japanese movies and the Raimi American trilogy (I ain't including that bs they made a few years back) are top tier. So glad y'all reacted to this one, hopefully you'll do the sequels!!!
You do realize Raimi was involved with that "one from a few years ago", right? Raimi was a producer of the Grudge 1, 2 and 4 (not 3), so the Raimi "Trilogy" is 1 2 and 4.
@@KrazzeeKane I'd much rather take the new film as canon over The Grudge 3, so thank god.
I almost walked out of the theater on this one when the cop is watching the security footage and the ghost gets right in front of the camera. I’d reached my limit.
Yeah I actually think that scene is scarier than Samara coming out of the tv 🤣
But it's so good and scary
@@NikkieTwix Yep haha
I like their use of the word Ghoul and it's evolution as a verb like "OH NO HE'S GONNA GET GHOULED!" Etc 😂
i was high out of my mind when i first watched this. had to walk through a dark forest to get home and my roommates had a black cat, this movie messed with me way to much. i told my roommates about the movie and they made fun of me so i rented it for them. one of them woke up with their black cat sitting on their chest staring at them, it was so worth it
😂😂😂😂
One thing I like about this movie is that they show you that once you are cursed by going in the house the ghosts can do pretty much anything to you. Invisibly stalk you, manipulate technology, teleport your body. . .anything.. Despite that the primary method the wife and son use is to literally just terrify you to death. I also like that in death the wife and child's ghosts seem to be stronger. While the husband's ghost is just mindlessly consumed by rage and he just physically kills you and doesn't seem to leave the house the wife and son are toying with people until they are at the height of fear and then taking their souls/spirit/life energy to grow stronger.
The man she was obsessed with was played by Bill Pullman. Another great actor like Bill Paxton. I love Bill in Casper the movie, Independence Day, and while you were sleeping with Sandra Bullock and Brokedown palace. Another good movie I recommend. I hope people still remember the talented acting of Claire Danes.
The type of ghost the women are, are called Onryō Vengeful Spirits. Also as you guys noticed doesn't matter if you leave the house, heck if you leave the country the Ghost will still follow you and if my knowledge is correct there is no way to exorcise them at all.
Saw this when it came out, with friends. And the film didn't really bother me. Nothing really scared me about it. But that night, and for several nights afterward, I had the *worst* nightmares in my life. Something about this film really fucked with my subconscious. And still does, to this day.
"Cats CAN read!"
I don't know why Curtis saying that killed me, but it did.
Just found your guys' channel and really love the energy and humor! So freaking glad! I'm a disabled vet and most times I'm down and out but you guys make me laugh and smile. THANK YOU!
Thank you, these are the comments we live for; I'm glad we can make you smile and laugh my man!
I saw this with my cousins at home, my mom happened to be coloring her hair that night, when she walked down the dark hallway hair long and black, my cousin lost hia shitttt! 😂 Rip to my mother and 2 cousins great memories ❤ thanks for the reaction boys 🙏
If you haven't seen it yet you should check out the original Japanese version.
They called them "remakes" but when you watch each of them, they seem more like prequels to me with *JU-ON* being part 1 the GRUDGE AND THE GRUDGE 2 IS PART 4 with the latest one being the final chapter.
@@tonyyul703 Yes it's basically a continuation, as they are made by the same director, but with American actors.
I personally even like the original movies more, as they are more effective with less special effects.
"Ju-On", "Ringu" and "Dark Water" (by the same author as The Ring) were the main movies of the Japanes Horror hype.
There's also a series of movies "The Eye" from China I'd recommend, plus "Silk" from Taiwan.
@@tonyyul703Well, it’s definitely not a continuation of the originals. They are remakes for sure.
“The Grudge” is a remake of both “Ju On: The Curse” and “Ju On: The Grudge”.
The Curse was a made for television movie that chronicled the story of the teacher who discovered the dead family, and how the curse began to spread to the police, neighbors, and friends and loved ones of anyone who entered the house. There are actually two The Curse movies.
The Grudge was the first theatrical Ju On film in Japan, and is a direct sequel to The Curse 1 and 2. The Grudge is more or less a collection of short films that show different interconnected characters in the house at different times. With the main point showing that it’s approaching a contagion level spread, with the film closing on the streets of Japan empty and thousands of missing posters.
The American Grudge is a remake of The Curse and The Grudge. The story of the caretaker, the old lady, the old ladies family, and the sister being followed all the way home is from Ju On: The Grudge.
But everything about the teacher, the mother’s secret obsession, and how her husband murdered his whole family, plus the story of the police officer who tries to burn the house down, are all from The Curse.
The American Grudge just makes some tweaks so that the caretaker is the lead character (the originals really have no lead character) who can discover the mystery of the Saeki family. The original Grudge contained the most iconic scenes but did not contain the necessary backstory, so the American Grudge bridges that gap between the made-for-TV Ju On movies and the theatrical ones.
In the directors cut of The American Grudge, you can see the husband hung from the ceiling by the wife’s hair and his legs banging against the wall. That’s a scene from the original The Grudge 2.
@@tonyyul703 yeah true
This movie scared me as a kid and now as a adult the grudge still continues to scare the fuck outta me 😱😨😥😭
The kid watching the lift go up from each floor. Gave us nightmares for months.
When i was like 5 my Dad had me in timeout by him while he was watching this. Since i was in trouble n couldnt go anywhere, i sat and watched with him. For the next decade i was terrified of the grudge and had lots of nightmares.
Shame on your dad for playing that around a 5 yr old
damn that's messed u[
This is a rare case of the remake being directed by the same director as the original! So, I would def watch if you did Ju-on for the channel but it's kinda the same movie in Japanese.
I don't know WHAT state of mind I was in when I first saw this movie, but I did not pick up on the story line at all, lol. You guys picked up so much on this first watch. It made so much more sense watching it with you guys. Thanks for the reaction. There's so much to unpack in this movie -- but I think the main thing is the corruption of one's psyche/soul/mind that can happen to an individual in this physical world, and how it goes with you (as it's your soul's corruption, not your physical corruption) when you die. Some heavy stuff.
Very memorable film. As in, Kayako's visage will be forever embedded in your mind, and will always haunt you, even when you close your eyes 😂
In Japan they call them Obake or vengeful ghosts.
This movie, the ring, and dead silence really scared me as a kid. I thought i was going to die from the ghosts 😂
😂😂😂
I watched this in a dark room by myself at 10. I never had a problem with scary movies, but after watching this i was scared for a long time.
This Remake Is Almost As Good As Original!😭😰🫣🥰👻🖥
Yep, literally if you set foot in the house even for one second, you’re cursed. And it’s literally just because the ghost is so angry.
And they're more ghosts of the anger the victims felt as they died rather than ghosts of the victims themselves. It's the reason why it doesn't matter how polite or respectful you are to the ghosts (like how Karen introduced herself to the ghost boy and asked for his name in return). If you make contact with them, they WILL kill you.
7:38 is anyone cracking tf up at "MY PRESIDENT!!!!" and the way it cuts to them just chilling watching the movie again 😂💀
There is actually a movie that puts the grudge against the ring called Sadako vs Kayako. It's pretty hilarious
"He's meowing too much." 😂 Now that was funny!
"Never question a ghoul!" Made me spit mountain dew in my lap. 🤣🤤
lol
The noise of the grudge is so freaky the clicky sound
Dude in the back skimped out on the intro
I like the
“The guy your mom is always talking about”
Is it wrong I find him attractive 🤔 😂
Movie haunted me till I was 15 now it’s one of my fav movies along with the second one. We don’t speak about the third one…..
Dooooood no fookin way😮,
As a kid this movie scared the absolute shit out of me😂
To this day pt 1 & 2 hold up as top tier horror movies💙💛❤️
P.s pleaseeee watch pt 2 , it picks up right where this one leaves off & is even creepier
I love when yall say “ghoul” 😂
The first time I saw this movie it gave me the impression that japanese horror is no joke.
The Grudge 2 is a really good sequel and hope you guys react to that one as well.
I think the ring did this a bit better but definitely gives you that creepy feeling
YUP! Love Ring 2002
“I don’t trust him. I don’t like his shirt”😂😂😂😂
This is one of the few movies that gave me a *lasting* scare as an adult, namely the scene in the hallway where the view is blocked by the shadow... which then opens its eye to look right at the guy looking through the camera.
That’s the part I almost walked out of the theater. 😆 This movie messed me up.
It feels like she’s staring into your soul 🤣
@@NikkieTwix What would you do if you saw kayako coming after you making that uuu noise?
You two should take a look at Sadako vs. Kayako (The Grudge vs The Ring)
I remember living in Japan at the time when this dropped, I was in 5th grade and they released a point and click flash horror game based on this movie that fucked me up for weeks lol...we all took turns playing it in class
i remember walking in on my parents watching this when i was about 4 and that night i had sleep paralysis with the grudge in it and 15 years later i still get her in my sleep paralysis even tho the movie doesn’t bother me as much anymore as it did years ago .
That ending is saying no matter what you do it can’t be stopped
There's actually very little point in doing the original Ju-On for the channel. Definitely watch it yourselves! But the director who directed the original Ju-On was actually hired to direct the American remake. So apart from some slight differences regarding the American cast being in Japan, it pretty much follows the same plot and the same iconic scares. There are small differences, but it's a pretty faithful remake.
The Grudge, The Ring, and Dark Water are three of the Hollywood remakes I am okay with. The Grudge was directed by Takashi Shimizu, the director of the original Japanese Ju-On: The Grudge(2002), and the remake takes place in Japan makes it better.
BTW, it was hilarious that y’all are referring Bill Pullman as the President from Independence Day (1996), which makes sense because that film came before The Grudge. He escaped an alien invasion but died in a haunted house.
Bill Pullman also had a run-in with a Voodoo doctor - watch "The Serpent and the Rainbow" to see how it turned out. Based on a true story …
@@Cau_No I've watched it, and prior to that, he was the original on-screen Lone Starr with his faithful companion, Barf, journeying through the galaxy to engage in a Schwartz rings battle with Helmet and rescue Princess Vespa and her home planet Druidia from being vacuumed of air, vegetation, and snow-covered mountains by a space Statue of Liberty. No wonder, he’s not afraid of some aliens from far away, lol.
@@Mangoliteyes I do think American remakes declined after Ring , Grudge and Dark Water
I just wish all those ghouls would quit ghoulin' around so much!
You guys should DEFINITELY do Ju-On! Less jump scares, more creepiness
My sister's college roommate was scared sh*tless by this movie, so whenever my sister (who has long dark hair) wanted to punk her roommate, she would start talking and in the middle of a sentence she would drop her jaw and make the Grudge sound. (Incidentally, the sound is supposed to be what trying to talk through a crushed larynx is supposed to sound like).
I recommend reacting to other horror movies for this October like Feng Shui (2004 Filipino horror movie) and The Wailing (2016 South Korean horror movie). Anyways, I highly recommend reacting the Japanese original Ju-On The Grudge. Both the original and remake are great in this own ways.
OHH SMG EARLY 2000s. OHHH MY.....
3:34 XD the scream😅😂
I think you two will enjoy Orphan. It's one of the more underrated horror movies out there.
Edited comment to remove sensitive info!
@@DJKuroh Guess you're right. I edited the comment so that way it won't come off as too spoilery and so they can go into the film blind.
@@DJKurohSo now your comment is the spoiler 😂
@@theprousteffect9717 Thanks for the heads up! 😄
this is the only horror movie to genuinely get to me. bugged me for years when i was younger, at 31 it still makes me uncomfortable XD lol
Try Sinister (2012) or even Martyrs (2008), then you´ll see what´s really fucked up.
Same. Still scares me a little. All these years I still cant watch that alone at night. The legend in the story is creepy
@@vega23565 oh I've seen both of those, no problem at all. The problem was the grudge came out when I was 12
Glad you reacted to this one. It tends to get ignored but it was extremely popular back in the day
It is past midnight, I have to sleep to get up to work, I will watch this before I go to bed. (I'm not going to bed)
Do you guys recognize the elderly woman? She was the adoption agent, Grace Poole from childs play 2 that was killed by Chucky towards the end of the film
I like that the director of the American version also did the Japanese version. That's also the director making all those throat croak death rattle sounds.
They should be grateful original Japanese director agreed to do a remake in America lol
It’s not that the ghouls get out of the house, It’s the house that never leaves you…
Ghoul has now become a verb.
"Who'll we get for the opening suicide?"
"How about Bill Pullman?"
"But he's only going to be in the movie for a minute or two."
"So."
"Okay."
WTF! LOL
There are two franchises I wont watch - The Ring (i have seen 1 a looong time ago) and the Grudge. Regarding the Ring, Im so bloody terrified, I cant even look at moving gifs or pictures of her. I do have the DVDs but they are unopened. I was planning on watchin it last weekend (we had 3 days of rain) but seeing a gif and instant fear talked me outta it.
As for the Grudge, I have the movies on DVD and still have not watched them. Why? Because I know the sound she makes.
And my sister made that sound in her sleep. I was scared shitless.
😂😂😂😂 so funny
Drag Me to He'll is a super scary movie
The woman who played Emma in the grudge (2004) also played Dr. Grace Poole in Child's play 2 (1990)
For more horror, consider:
"Wolf" 1004
Jack Nicholson, James Spader, Michelle Pfieffer
I watched this movie when I was in 4th grade, for months I was horrified to hear that damned sound she makes in my room at night.
Yes there are original version so The Grudge and The Ring. That's why it's hard to follow the logic at times even in the American remakes.
Despite not being perfect BOTH remakes were very successful lol
This gave me SO many bad nights after i watched it. I could not handle it.
The japanese myth is when a murder occurs the rage remains and a demon is created and stalks those who come in contact.
I worked at a theater when this was released. This was right around the time it became common for teenagers to have cell phones, so you better believe every screening had kids calling each other during the movie to make the death rattle sound.
You should do the original (Juon) & the original Ring (Ringu). Ringu has Hiroyuki Sanada (Ujio from The Last Samurai - Scorpion from the new Mortal Kombat).
When I first saw this movie I was in HS but my bedroom was in my parents' attic ( they made me an apartment from my old room and the attic cause the attic stairs were in my old room so they finished the attic and turned it into an apartment to give me more room) it was heated with electric baseboard and every time it turned on it would groan like the grudge. Needless to say I woke up multiole times thinking I was going to die
When I first saw this I wrote it off as a wannabe The Ring, but watching scenes of it now, I probably should give it another chance. The creepiness factor is plenty high.
The American sequel is completely different than the Japanese version. In the Japanese version a reporter is investigating the disappearances from the first movie. She goes into the house and the fun ensues…please watch the Japanese versions. You can find them subtitled.
Next movie "Arachnophobia"
Not long realised the spider expert in the film is the bloke that went missing recently and they found his body 5 months later 😮
good movie remake but I would like to see if you guys want it of course watch the original japanese version to me it's way better than this one but is just my opinion about it anyway if you decided watch the original must be keep in mind that asian horror movies is pretty much "psychology horror" quite different to Hollywood ones.
Good evening from Japan. Have you guys seen ‘Ju on’ as well? It is an original Japanese film for ‘The Grudge’.
“My president!”💀
You guys are so funny. When i first saw this movie i kept covering my eyes, but you guys made it so much fun i didn't have to.
There is a sequel (it has Joan of Arcadia in it), and the Asian version has several sequels. Some better than others. At some point, they almost start getting annoying and frustrating, because there's no way to stop the Grudge from spreading.
It is hard to make a good sequel but they did a good job I think, would be great for you to watch on the channel
"free the cat"
me: see, and this is why you would die.
poor big baby...he was too good to survive this movie. Jason Behr is the cutest.
I see this movie when i was 14 years old literally is the movie most terrified what i've ever seen
"it´s going bald!"
lol xD
In the Japanese version the husband kills the wife and son because he finds out the kid isn’t his.
The actress is named Takako Fuji. She’s a contortionist. She did the stair crawl herself. I read an interview where she said they ask her to crawl on the floor like that at parties. 😂
you know how many years ive tried to remember where that opening scene is from cause it lives in my head and i couldnt? thanks! also, that actress really is pretty and she has a sweet voice, i remember her from the tv show strong medicine where she played a doctor. Her name is Rosa Blasi. In real life, she really did become a dr. crazy!
You guys should see more J-Horror works, like the original version of The Ring (Ringu) or Audition.
Oh how excited I was to see this thinking it's the creepy Japanese original. And it's only the Buffy one. What a bummer.
There is literally a "the Ring vs the Grudge" movie offf of the Japanese originals.
I remember seeing this in the theater. We were laughing along with the people in front of us.
To be fair the hardest thing is playing a game, because if bad your not stuck with 2-3 hours, but with up to 10-20+
I swear I can't watch this movie without laughing bc all I think about is Scary Movie's parody 😂
God, I miss (the good) scary movies parodies. Shame they don’t still make those. How fun would it be to see something like Barbarian or Hereditary satirized in that style?
@@cruzcamelWell I wouldn’t want Hereditary name tarnished by some dumb parody. They already ruined the Grudge and Scream
I wanttt a onesie that matches MR BUILT DIFFERENT
Not even Buffy could go up against the grudge.
The Winchesters would've probably been able to handle it. Considering they took on a Japanese entity as well
Nope ! Nothing beats Juon! Japanese ghosts weren’t Jean to be defeated lol
So funny you bring up Buffy lol. Because Sarah Gellar ALSO played in Scream but her character couldn’t beat ghost face. Only because it wasn’t Buffy. But sadly Buffy can’t beat Kayako
Much preferred the original Japanese version, same with The Ring and Tales of two sisters. The way they are filmed, the suspense without major jump scares and gore is very unsettling. But that might b coz I watched them first before the remakes.
There’s also a film “Sadako vs Kayako” it’s the woman from the grudge and the woman from the ring. It was directed by the same man that made “the slit mouthed woman” both films are on RUclips to watch.
Not masterpieces, but if u like Asian horror, they’re worth watching.
If anyone likes disturbing, body horror and Asian horror; I’d recommend “Gozu” one of the weirdest film I’ve ever seen!
And “Oldboy” the original is truly one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
You know I it find SO funny when ppl say the the 1998 Ring had no jump scares. Umm like it DID. Like the girl in the closet scene. Both Ring movies had the *same* closet scene jump scare. Each is just executed differently
I had been desensitized at a young age, but when I saw this in theaters, HOLY 💩!
I fear no horror movie! But this, thing. . . . It Scares me!
I haven't seen this in years and I'm getting creeped out again 😂😂😂 I remember why I avoided it now
I love watching you two react to some of more favorite movies. Being spooky seson think yu shoud check out 1408 and Identity. Yo'ull thank me!
“Yo it scared the shit out of him” 🤣
Love to share that onesie with u haha
