the grandma definitely tried putting paimon in every male in her family. annie said her brother hanged himself and his suicide note blamed their mother for “putting people inside of him”. being she had DID and he was schizophrenic, people interpret it as hereditary mental illness but in reality he was being possessed.

Facts u prob didn’t catch: Charlie was never Charlie. She was Paimon even before she was born, hence why she never cried. Her death was planned by the cult. (People are saying that every random person you see is a part of the cult, even Peter’s crush) At the end, it’s not Charlie possessing Peter. It’s Paimon. Peter died when he jumped out the window and then Paimon possessed him. Lastly, Paimon rides on horses, and the clucking sound that Charlie was making is the sound you make when you want the horse to go forward.

I am always amazed that anyone can have a positive or sympathetic reaction to the father in this story. In my opinion, the whole thing is his fault. Annie is bananas, always has been. Her mother ruined her, so even though I have a visceral emotional reaction to the way she neglects and abuses her son throughout the movie (not to mention sending a child with a severe allergy to a house party with teenagers without a goddamn EPI-PEN), I intellectually understand that she is not a stable, sane person and is not aware that what she's doing is wrong. The father is another story entirely. He is 100% aware that his wife is nuts and a danger to his children, and he just lets the whole thing unfold because he has NO spine. Dude's a damn coward. He sits there silently while his wife spews abusive vitriol at his child over the dinner table, but what does he do when the child CALMLY expresses his emotions in return? The dad shuts him down. He doesn't even let his child express his emotions because he knows his wife can't handle the truth. He chooses his wife over his children, and that's fucked up. He doesn't even get the kid into therapy after he accidentally causes the death of his sister and is clearly struggling with it. The fact I hated the parents SO much really made me less afraid of the movie. I found the family dynamic deeply horrifying, but the supernatural element barely rated on my list of what was scary about this film.

20:40 I’ve looked at so much info about this movie I feel like I took a class on it. The clicking noise is made by Paimon. While possessing Charlie, he does the noise a lot and then when he finally possesses Peter you hear it once again. The noise itself is a calling sound made when hailing a camel. If you recall in the picture of Paimon, he is riding a camel and on the saddle there is a collection of severed heads. The clicking sound is just one that Paimon makes out of habit in the movie and it’s kinda proof that Paimon was in Charlie the entire time. Grandma got Charlie possessed when she was a baby which is told via other clues in the movie.

What’s your point? You think it’s more likely that this demon of hell is making noises like he is “hailing a camel,” or because he is depicted as a bird, there is a ton of bird symbolism, one literal corpse…and clucking is a common bird sound? One makes no sense, and is not supported by the movie, and the other makes sense and is vastly supported by things in the movie.

Annies husband was also her psychologist before marriage. This is why the cult couldn't break him into submission like the rest of the family. And when they did he was suseptible to being burned.
A24 released the screenplay to this movie that describes what's not always obvious on screen.
The cult wanted to give them the illusion of choice, putting the flyer in the mail slot. They didn't take the bait, so Joan showed up to the art supply store.

For anyone who may have the same questions as Jack & Dan here are some answers:
Q1. why touch grandma's lips at the beginning? A1: The woman seems to be rubbing an oil or liquid of some sort on the grandma's lips, this is a reference to the old Christian practice of "anointing" the lips of royalty so that their souls may slip from their bodies more easily. It ties in with how possession in the film is often depicted with the victim's mouth open.
Q2: What is happening when Peter is attacked in bed? A1: Most commonly accepted theory is that its Annie's hands grabbing his head and she isn't trying to manually decapitate him because if you rlly pay attention she's grasping at his jaw & trying to pry his mouth open. Shes likely possessed momentarily by Paimon who through Annie is trying to force his mouth open so he can possess him. (this is assumed because the odd behavior was preceded by her supernatural interaction with Charlie's sketchbook)
Q3: What's up with Charlie's clicking? A1: Paimon is described in folklore as speaking in a different language when summoned. In order to understand him you have to command him to "speak plainly". Ari Aster the director described Charlie's click as a "cluck" and Paimon is often symbolized by birds. The common understanding is that Charlie is a "nonideal" vessel so while she is possessed it isn't his preferred body. Since she's possessed most assume she's clucking as a result of Paimon.
Also at 30:57 you can see Annie reach for the orange paint but the blue one spills on its own. this spill causes her to notice Joan's contact info. The cult/Paimon's magic has been at work since the beginning

When Peter sticks his hand in the air he’s temporarily possessed by Paemon , notice the arm straight up and the hand point forward , in the book about Paemon there’s a pagan illustration of this demon and it’s holding a wooden staff with a carved hand pointing to the west where it’s kingdom in hell is.the statue in the tree house at the end has the same staff , a staff that given the demon it’s “magic “ ability . If you pause when she opens thst book and read the 2 pages and 2 prior and look closely at the illustration , those couple pages and illustration answer every question anyone will have about what’s going on. The illustration shows Paemon riding a camel and holding 3 heads by their long hair , the 3 heads are the queen that gets it his male body on earth. ( her grandma, and the grandma gave her soul, her daughters and grand daughters to Paemon as it’s 3 mistressss , that’s why all 3 end up heads cut off as part of the ritual and Paemon Carrie’s their heads around with it by their hair. It says Paemon is a trickster god/demon having an ability to trick souls on earth using its magic staff , the blue lights that led everyone to ultimately the worst possible scenarios is Paemon using its tricks to manipulate this family , showing Peter a smiling reflection when he wasn’t smiling another trick , it uses tricks to make human souls think their going nuts , lead them down bad paths etc . When Annie knocks the bottle of blue paint over , watch closely , she’s not even close to knocking g it over , it’s tipped over by Paemon onto the saiance pamphlet and Joan’s number giving Annie a fake sign she should calls Joan and do the conjuring. The text says Paemon is a demon that has both male and female genetalia ,this is how is why and how it resides in Charlie from nursing to death but needs a male body to be its most powerful , grandma promised the demon Peters body and her her daughter and grand daughters souls for eternity in grace for wealth on earth which they had. She’s damned the entire family to hell for money . Notice grandma breast fed Charlie and dug her claws into Charlie , the breast feeding was part ritual to allow Paemon into Charlie’s body as an infant. Charlie was alive so her soul was still in it too which is why she jsut seemed odd . The clicking she does is Paemon , for thousands of years to present wealthy men who had camels have used that clicking sound to audibly tell the camel to begin walking , to come to the master or stop . Camel owners in the Middle East still do this clicking of the tongue . Remember Paemon rides a camel in Hell, thus the clicking and when I’m Charlie’s body she clicked or it did I mean . When it goes in Peter at school and in treehouse he clicks . Demons work towards possession by breaking down the person , not let them sleep , keep them scared , feeling crazy , isolating them , ohsucsl and emotional trauma until they break and it can take possession of their body’s. It broke Annie down taking her dad brother , husband and daughter , when temporarily in peters body at school after Joan casts her spell the demon bashes his face into the desk to speed it up . Fun fact the actor bashed his face on purpose as he was method acting this role and broke his nose in that actual scene you see. Notice also peters face was normal but when possessed at desk his face physically warps , left side of face droops a LoT , notice Charlie’s face drooped sagging on the left . In real life it’s normal but was altered in post the faces contort having a demon in side. Annie tells Charlie she’s was an unusual baby never crying and doctors thought soenthing was wrong mentally but never found any actual issues , autism , assbuegerd. She never smiled laughed showed any affection or happiness. In religions demons were never human, eternity in helll responsible for the misery of those in helll and to tempt and deceive good souls , there can’t exist any peace happiness , love joy in hell demons and Satan are 100% evil and dark incapable of feeling anything good , explains why Charlie is never shown happy , smiling , laughing and chopping birds heads off without any hesitation , she needed a head for her creepy doll so orders a bird to kill itself at her school window never looking that way or jumping but got the scissors to cut it off showing Paemon did that. Charlie for a little girl had zero fear sneaking outside to sleep in the unusually nice and large treehouse in the mountains of park city utah freezing nights no blankets pillows or heaters and notice the Ceiling shape in her bedroom and treehouse , we see the treehouse is where the cult ultimately shows us it’s an evil temple for the demon where they gathered to worship Paemon and complete the ritual , not in a catherdral or house but a treehouse , the same treehouse Charlie sneaks out to every night but never seen sleeping. A number of scenes show us naked cult members were in the forest the whole movie ,look close we see their breath outside peters window twice nakeds in attic . Covered in white paint or chalk and naked shows they were performing. Rituals asn spells IN the house outside surrounding every night. The unimaginable horror, pain and anger and family falling apart so rapidly was the cults doing . Look closely at faces at the funeral all the people Annie had no idea who they were were the cult memebrs worshieprs of Paemon, you’ll notice they ARE the fake grief group , 2 of Peters “best friends “ are in the cult , the one that invited him to the party where Charlie’s demise was carefully planned . We see this cults been pulling strings all along destroying their lives. We see peters death, his soul can be seen leaving his body after jump , he died in the falll and we seen Paemons spirit enter peters body after death. So peters isn’t possessed by Paemon at the end with Peter still inside also, the person in the treehouse was Paemon spirit in its new body. When he clicks many viewers said it’s Charlie but the camel clicking is the demon not Charlie . Charlie was killed planned by the cult , her soul promised to Paemon , she wasn’t possessing the mom mom and Peter . She’s in hell thanks to grandma. The cult completed the rituals ending in peters death promised by grandma giving lemon a healthy empty male body with no soul , the cult literally conjured. Eighth king of hell into a human body one of the most powerful demons in hell was now. On earth in a physical body , an event that was going to start a period of bad stuff accross the earth. Turns out Annie’s family wasn’t mentally ill , the queen of a demon destroyed their lives with Evil. Paemon is a wrote about demon and most searched in text in movie was from satanic books etc. . Creeps me out . Oh and Annie’s husband lighting on fire was another trick by Paemon, it lit her shirt on fire to make her think it’s tied to her , when she tosses it in second time Paemon sets hubby on fire the final breaking of Annie’s soul

Hope y'all are feeling better. I've had Covid for a week now and I'm finally feeling better myself. After watching this movie the first time I went back and looked up Paimon and his mythology and after reading that I went back and watched the movie again and each scene made crystal clear sense. Also I believe that Leigh was trying to put Paimon into her husband and he knew. That's why he starved himself to death. I'm really enjoying y'alls reactions to this movie!

I was hit with a second round of it right after we recorded this video, but can confirm it's all good now thankfully. Sorry to hear about your covid, hoping that you'll make a fast recovery now the first week of it is down! I was just thinking about reading up on this Paimon chap myself, i'll definitely do that now. I also think that Leigh trying to put Paimon in her husband is a great theory! Glad to have you here! 😊

I don’t think anyone in Annie’s family were truly schizophrenic or mentally ill. They were all victims of the cult of Paimon. Annie’s father starved himself to death; perhaps the grandmother tried putting Paimon in him, first, but the ritual didn’t work. Annie’s brother comitted suicide because she was trying to “put people inside him.” Poor Annie was exposed to all of this and had no idea what the hell was going on. She just assumed everyone was crazy. I think, deep down, she felt something wasn’t right. She didn’t know her mom was in a cult (evident by her shock when she discovered the photo album). Annie kept Peter away from her mother, but let her meet Charlie. For all we know, Charlie was never born with a human soul. Joan told “Charlie” she was actually Paimon. And they “corrected” his female body to a male one (Peter’s). That could mean the grandmother did some ritual on pregnant Annie, assuming the unborn child would be male. Charlie was meant to be “Charles.” The cult screwed up big time. Imagine that Paimon was “born” into a female body, without knowing what or who he really was. He was “Charlie,” a strange little girl who really liked cutting heads off things…King Paimon is depicted as a male on horseback, carrying three severed heads.

Great reaction guys. I'd heard of King Paimon somewhere before this. So ended up geeking out a little finding out about him. The lore this film uses is pretty much spot on. A few fun bits the film changed:
The book you see is even one of the few books containing lore of Paimon (12th century), they just changed the title of the book.
King Paimon is actually 1 of 9 kings of Hell. So the thing about needing to face in a certain way is incorrect.
The other change is the beheadings. His lore contains nothing about that. The reason it was included was the art work you see in the book. He has 3 heads hanging from his belt. So they changed that. But it adds a Lot of extra scare.
Hope that helps you guys sleep a little more soundly.
Hope everyone is having a great week & much love to everyone from here in the UK
