I think one other reason why some people are down on this film is because they go into it expecting a traditional horror film when that's not what it is at all. It's a mystery horror film, emphasis on mystery. That's the aspect of the film I enjoy myself, watching the characters put the pieces together.

I think that it's all subjective and we should stop the arguing on who is right and wrong and why they make their opinions. Because right now it's "you don't understand" and shit like that. Every single opinion is valid and is NOT about popularity or mob mentality. You like it or you don't, that is how simple it should be. But people are so self centered that they think stuff is underrated or some shit like that because the world doesn't share their experience with ENTERTAINMENT.
THE ONE TIME people SHOULD be totally individualistic and greedy is when it comes to entertainment, but they appease and form opinion based on others. It's ruining the industry and it should go back to "I like this movie and here is why" NOT the "I like this movie and you should too" bullshit.

@@Gnossiene369 I agree that people should like and dislike any piece of entertainment and not be shit on for it. Yep. Samara is evil and the only way to live after watching the tape is to make a copy and show it to someone else before your seven days are up. Rachel inadvertently saved herself by making a copy and showing it to Noah. Samara’s mom killed Samara because Samara was telepathic and putting horrific images (like what’s on the tape) into her parents’ and the horses’ minds. The horses literally drowned themselves to get away from the little girl.

      Hmm.
This is why the Ring needs a prequel so ppl can see what REALLY happened at Samara birth
Being born evil isn’t the same thing as being born, getting older and choosing to be evil. Because infants do NOT have the ability to make valid choices yet. This proves Samaras fate wasn’t 100% in her control. In “The Ring 2”, Rachel asks Evelyn “why’d you try to drown your baby?” She answered, “because my baby told me to.” She apparently had a dream or vision. Samara was warning her of the future. She was born with an inner demon and there’s nothing she could do. That’s the one wholesome thing she ever did was trying to stop the wrath she knew she’s bring if not Drowned. Wish more ppl knew this

In case there is any confusion about the story of Samara, this is it:
Anna and Richard Morgan, a couple who owned a horse ranch adopted a girl named Samara. The girl was born with a sort of supernatural ability revolving around telekenesis and psychic projection. Basically, she would project her thoughts unintentionally into the minds of anyone around her, in this case her parents. This gave them terrible nightmares and visions, reducing their quality of life. Interestingly enough, Samara had no knowledge of these powers, nor what she was doing to her parents, as it was happening against her will.
Her powers grew as she aged, causing the projections to get worse over time. This began to spill into the town, causing the people in the area to see the same visions and nightmares, and eventually, the towns people began to blame her for everything. They noted that every misfortune they experienced began after she was adopted. Her mother started to lose her sanity, causing her to become more detached, as well as her father.
Her mother began to see a psychiatrist for her nightmares, and her and Samara were referred to a hospital. It was there that they discovered Samara displayed some sort of psychic ability by using her power to burn images onto film.
Realizing that Samara is now aware of her power, but has no desire or will to control it, and wants to hurt her parents out of spite, her father locked her away in the barn, where she was unable to sleep, due to the horses being nearby. She grew so enraged that she used her powers to terrorize the minds of the horses, causing them to flee and jump off a cliff.
This event caused the whole ordeal to gain the public's attention, and her mother became depressed and once again was in the hospital. Once she was out, the family decided to take a trip to Shelter Mountian. Anna snapped here, and suffocated Samara, throwing her in the well.
Samara was alone in the well, except for some trash, and an old video tape. She finally died after 7 days in the well. Before she died, she used her power to project the events she experienced onto the tape, cursing it and telekinetically projecting it into the world. Like her own predicament, the viewer is warned they have 7 days to live unless they figure out the riddle in the video.

I saw this one first, then the original one and liked this one better.
The original Ringu, while bringing the black-haired ghost girl genre out of Japan, had some plot holes, like the main character actually climbing into the well to empty it (in the last hours of her 7 days), instead like here being pushed into it. Other changes were that Samara was made younger than Sadako, and some of the additional effects.
Just don't do the sequel ...
Maybe Ju-On: The Grudge should be next? This time the original (Japan 2001), the US remake had a bad CGI overkill in its finale, although the same director made it ...

Both are excellent, creepy, athmospheric and Ringu is single handedly responsible for the horror japanese renewal of the early 2000's and movies like dark water or the grudge.

Congratulations, guys. You got through what is perhaps one of the most complex horror movies ever made and your reaction was justified. when I saw this at the theater there were people walking out somewhere between the 30 - 40 mionute mark. This movie was not designed for people who want instant gratification of horror. It is a thinking person's movie. It is a movie that you will be talking about with people who have seen it whether it be around the office water cooler or at a friend or family gathering. You will be sorting out what and why things happen drawing all inds of conclusions until you've settled on the right ones. Pretty much how you ended your film reaction with your talking point reaction. Curtis made a good point about watching and sharinf the video because it was like a virus. That was a scary thought. But Chris also nailed it that to avoid death you have to share it with someone else and that person has to share wit to avoid their death etc, etc. But, both of you talked it out, got it sorted and I think you both came up with some viable statements of what this movie is about. Again, it's a thinking peron's movie and one that gets people talking about it. (A pretty good social gathering concept)! Yes, there are two more movies: Ring 2 (or Two) and a third titled "Rings." I'll leave it up to both of you to see these but if you think you are looking for more answers you may be dissapointed. The concept of "Rings" will blow your mind and both of you may have to each carry your own bottle of aspirin to get through it.

The first VHS copy I rented of this movie actually showed you, before the title screen, before the previews or anything, showed you the images you would see if you had found the VHS in that motel room/the video store... which was an incredibly ominous way to start the movie off, because that meant that you had this feeling you also were going to die. I don't know who they had to pay off to make that happen, but it was very creepy psychological trick. Also, it allowed you to pinpoint each moment in the movie where those images came to fruition, because you'd already seen them in order, which was fascinating. I wish they put it out like that on DVD as well, because I truly believe that's the best way to watch it. It really sets the tone.
also Amber Tamblyn who played the girl who died in the first few scenes was on General Hospital, I think this was her first big movie role, I think she did a really good job

I get scared and all but not to point to close eyes or to have problem with sleep, etc, but I was scared watching this.
The story is cool actually, the way they made this was cool, from camera man point of view.
It is old movie now, so it hits different for sure but then....
I will be honest I didn't watch this movie ever after this time in cinema, I watched some clips, some teories about story, etc. But not all again.
My friend that was with me, for all time of movie, she had scarf on face and only watched first part before everything goes bad... But even noises was so scary for her that she was jumping in chair (but in cinema you hear it more sooo), and she loves horrors.
I'm sure you are too young too remember when this come out but maybe later in life you watched it if no.... Maybe try.
I also think only 1 one is worth watching.
This in one of my favorite horrors.

So basically Samara had some sort of super power(like an x-men) that's making everyone around her crazy. The power which even Samara had no control over. The parents kept her in the barn, took her to the psychiatric hospital and eventually the mother couldn't take it anymore and killed her. Even after she died, the power keeps going on.

The conversation between the doctor and Samara is shown to the audience twice. The second time, Rachel (and the audience) pick up on the true meaning.
    (1st time)
Doctor: "You don't want to hurt anyone."
Samara: "But I do [hurt people]..."

everything looks dead because this is just how Californians see Washington and Oregon. And this blue-green filter was really popular in early 2000s horror.
