@@laurencechan470 oh really cool! Actually it's a common name in Indonesia, which come from word "setia" it is mean loyal/devoted, with the added affix "-an" in Indonesia become "Setiawan" it means the one who loyal or fidel. Indonesian Chinese used local name for any formal/official and government affair. I think Malaysian also know this word mean right.. (?)

Not entirely "disappeared" the remnants of Hakka Lanfang Republic is the city now called Singkawang, where the ethnic Chinese there 90% of Hakka origins (Also Bangka-Billiton Islands almost 90% of the Chinese are Hakkas)... unlike other cities in the world where the Chinese are not of Hakka majority (Even Singapore, although its founder and leadership is from Hakka family, the majority of the island's chinese population is not Hakka)

Yeeven Yoon, many thanks for Part 2. Congratulations for a well-researched and interesting vlog.
However, I do have a slightly little different prospective to the history which I read from a book titled “Monkey God” written by a descendant (a Lawyer) of the Bau gold-miners.
When the Chinese Gold-miners were returning to Bau by river, the White Rajah and his warriors caught up with the Gold-miners at Siniawan town, where a peace treaty was agreed upon between the Rajah and the Gold-miners.
Following the peace treaty, the Gold-miners were celebrating and many were drunk with rice wine supplied by the Rajah’s side.
Early the next morning, the Rajah and his Warriors suddenly attacked the Gold-miners; and the Gold-miners fought and defended themselves bravely but most were killed along the way back to Bau.
The chief of the Chinese Gold-miners was killed near Siniawan town, and his tomb can still be located at a temple there. He is today honoured as a Sarawak hero.
There were two brothers who did not get drunk and they dived into the river and swam all the way to Batu Kawah, a short distance downstream, and lived to tell the story.

Hi Azula, delighted to see you here, and to learnt that you have some contributions to this Part 2 of the Lanfang Republic.
I have relatives in staying in Sri Aman who had previously lived in Engkilili. I am interested to know more about the connection of Gold-miners to Engkilili. Was there gold mining activities in Engkilili ?
I bought 2 of the “Monkey God” books from our local bookstore probable 10 years ago, but could not find them in the Kuching bookshops now.
I also could not find my copy at the Kuching home.
I gave one copy to my Hakka friend and will try to find out whether she still have the copy.
I am currently stranded in Perth, Western Australia ( for almost 2 years now ) and hope to return to Kuching in April 2022.
I hope to be able to contact you when I am back in Kuching to discuss more about the history of the Lanfang Republic and gold-miners in Bau and Engkilili.
Please drop me a line. Thanks.

Hi Yeeven. I must say that I have enjoyed your videos tremendously. I watched the ones on Hakka, Hokkien and Cantonese histories as well. Brilliant and very well done.

Hi YeeVen, the painting that you shown at 3:30 is about the capture of Prince Diponegoro at 1830 by Dutch, painted by well known Raden Saleh. This painting has no relationship at all with what happened in Borneo/Kalimantan.
Nevertheless, you nicely bring up good topic that covering almost forgotten history of West Kalimantan and Sarawak. Hopefully lots of people getting more interested in this topic. Keep on the good work.
FYI in Indonesia official history book, Lanfang Republic never mentioned, so 99.9% of students here never heard of it.
    Thanks.

    Lanfang republic 1777

  • @ReviveHF
    @ReviveHF 2 года назад

Technically, the Republic of China during the Nationalist era(1927 -1991) was the actually 1st Chinese republic in true nature in human history despite it's strict authouritarian policy. The Lanfang Republic on the other hand, was more similar to the Chinese Beiyang Government(1911-1927), due to the fact that the Lanfang Republic was a confederation of private companies(Kongsi/公司)or local Chinese warlords. So, the Lanfang Republic lacks an important criteria to be categorised as a republic :"supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives" and the country is considered a "public matter", not the private concern or property of the rulers".

@The Ming Warrior You can say the same to the CCP, basically a capitalist Junta/Dictator regime with Communist in name.

The Chinese from south east Asian countries : Vietnam, Thailand, Philipine, malaysia , indonesia like to think they are Chinese . In reality, they are very different to mainland China. You can eat Chinese food, speak Mandarine with funny accent like Singaporean speaking English, practice Chinese tradition celebrate new years, moon festival. All that dont make you a true Chinese . In China, people dont accept them Chinese either.

The Chinese people in the South East Asian countries know where their ancestors were from and practice their ancestors' culture. It is the same as a Brit born in Hong Kong and believes that he is still a Brit and behaves also like one. The difference with the Chinese people in these countries is that they call themselves Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese and others and 'Chinese' is just a race group. Please stop using the Western mindset of racism and label them differently. Chinese is an old population on Earth and that's why you don't have to act as offended to find them all over the world.

@@janewick4209 This Vietnamese troll is intentionally making inflammatory and offensive comments on overseas Chinese.
Of course we ar different from Mainland Chinese. Politically we belong to
      and have our loyalty for
our countries. We are not PRC citizens Culturally Thais have been fully assimilated
into Thai culture. Indonesian Chinese had lost most of the Chinese cultural heritage like language.
This person may be a stooge for the mainland trying to advocate the pro China/communism course by agitating overseas Chinese to be more like mainland China

van tran - You have shown to be ignorant. In China, Chinese means nationality.
For everyone else, Chinese means race.
Such simple terminologies, yet you can't grasp.
