Thank you for your story about Chinese in Indonesia. My family has been in Canada for over 120 years and we are Cantonese. My ancestors were deal with a hefty Chinese Exclusion Head Tax of up to $500. My grandfather told me he had to work 5 years to pay off the $500. Perhaps they were also had the same discrimination and suppression by the Colonialists. Thanks again for the history lesson.

I still couldn't wrap my head around that a young person like you are so into the little known history of the Chinese diaspora in South East Asia 😱Thanks to you that I learned so much about the history of their arrival in the foreign land 🙏 I can't help but feel a sense of deep admiration for their success in a country that they knew so little about. I hope that the present-day youth appreciates the fruits that their forebears had worked so hard for them. It must have taken you days to find out their stories and the black-and-white pictures are just wonderful testimonies of their lives. I would think that they only appeared in obscure academic books. You will saw it pop up as early as 15th century because Ming 'explode' and they lose province around Canton. In brief: The Dayak Kesultanan Mempawah was the 1st who bring in the Chinese miners followed by the Malay Kesultanan Sambas as more gold mining were found. Increasing kongsi from 8 to 14, and was awarded to self-governed. Later, Lo Fang Pak was chosen democratically to be the 1st President of Lang Fang Republic to govern, unite and protect the Chinese. They are under Kesultanan Pontianak and Sambas. It’s like a country inside a country. After hundred years, fallen into Dutch occupation. Many ran to Singapore, Sumatera etc
Mempawah Sultan was not even a Dayak Sultanate, the first Sultan was a Bugis mix. The local population was mainly Dayak, Malay and Bugis.

Thanks for sharing the history of Lan Fang Republic to your audience. Hope more people are made aware of it and the history will not be lost. The irony is many Indonesians and even West Kalimantanese are not aware of its existence. I myself for example, as a West Kalimantanese, the first time I heard about Lan Fang Republic was during my High School year in the 90s in Australia during my Bahasa Indonesia Malaysia (BIM) class. There is another irony to that BIM class, while the students were mostly Malaysian and Indonesian, the teacher (the one sharing the story about Lan Fang Republic) was in fact a white Australian. Luckily it was a class discussing Indonesian and Malaysian literature and history rather than about linguistic skills thus the ethnicity of the teacher and us student was less relevant.
Well its because this want to keep hidden from Indonesian society. And later they (government or any malay radicals) made many books about lanfang, and its with their own perspective

My grandparent are from teochew has come to pontianak for search new life since 1902 years ago. Now we speak teochew in my family but i also known of hakka. I think the imigrant hakka are the most chinese people existed in west kalimatan under lan fang generation and the most previously came to west kalimantan and then the second time are followed by teochew imigrant. The teochew accent most familiar as teoswa nang and they are mostly stayed along kapuas river.

I am a 100% real Hakka person, speaking Hakka fluently, living in Singkawang 18 years before go to collage in other city, and I know a lot compared to most of my friends, and yet I still don't know the history until your video comes to youtube. There were no person in Singkawang had ever told me about the Lanfang Republic. I never thought or heard about it at all, even the "keyword/clue" of the story. I don't know why the history was lost, but thanks to your video now I can tell them the story. In the last few months I learn a lot about countries, history, and culture that turns out could help me understand myself, people around me, and society much better. In Bau, there is a temple of Liew Sang Ban , the gold miners''leader who fought with Raja James Brooke.

I am not aware of the significance of the other temples. I have been to the temple where the leader of the uprising against Rajah James Brooke was buried at Siniawan.

I like the title ofyour topic, however you should conduct more research about Sarawak. Sarawak was part of Brunei until the family Brooke came and received land as compensation over scams. Malay population was minority here. The main population consists of Dayak Laut and Barat, followed by Melanau, Kebayah etc. The Chinese migrants came around 19th century. Sarawak joined Malaysia in 1963.

Awesome video! Im currently on a bus from Kuching to Pontianak and fascinated by this history of Chinese in the region. I love history and Chinese cultures. The Langfang Republic, vassal of the Qing Dynasty, straddling the equator far from their homeland. While white Raja kings were ruling their own kindgom in Sarawak. All the while among headhunter locals and aggressive European colonial powers. Borneo is fascinating!
Just FYI I'm from California and I've done a good amount of research on the Chinese immigrants and miners that also went there. A few of your images, for sure the one at 7:38, are pictures from California and the 1849 Gold Rush. Not Borneo or Kalimantan. About 600,000 Chinese migrated to California through San Francisco from about 1840-1900 to work in mines and build the railroads. They weren't always treated great in tte US, but still its a long legacy establishing Chinese Americans. Maybe inspiration for another video. 😊

btw "kongsi" and "dagang" eventually become Indonesians words too.
"kongsi" means alliance/partnership, and
"dagang" means trade

Minutes 9:19 is a picture of Catholic misionaris who come to teach people in West Kalimantan. They first come in Singkawang at 1921 and create Holland Chinese Schools in Singkawang and Pontianak. I know because I research about this.

That's explain why all of my Chinese friend from Pontianak are more "culturally Chinese" than others in Java Island.
They had more tight close community, while Chinese in Java had to be more embrace local culture, to the point a lot of them are unable to talk in Chinese anymore.

I think you mistaken the Bau Chinese rebellion with this LanFang.
Yes, Lau Shan Bong migrated from LanFang but his kongsi in Bau have nothing to do with LanFang.

Every Lee family in the village was given a copy. There is no mention that anyone from Lee Kuan Yew village had ever migrated to Kalimantan all these years. People like to link to famous person.

Taiwan to China is a woman ran away from her husband without formal Act of divorce.
the husband still consider her as his wife, and wants to bring her back home.
However, she refuses to return to her (ex)husband, because now she's in love with uncle Sam...
And the fact is that the majority of the founders of that country were the same as the people who founded the Lanfang Republic (Hakka sub-ethnicity)
