- Laszlo picks up in 1818 with the Napoleonic Wars finished and the Dutch returning to their colonies to put everything back the way it was when they left. The struggle between the Dutch and the Chinese Kongsis of West Borneo discussed in the last episode continues with a fight to the finish in Part 2.
The legacy of this century of history that occurred in Kalimantan Barat between 1750-1884, lives on in our day with the Indonesian-Chinese descendants of these adventurous immigrants from Guangdong and Fujian.

hi laszlo, you should make an episode on liu shan bang and the story of bau, sarawak! it’s a spiritual successor to the west borneo story, as liu shan bang was originally was from santiaogou before fleeing north. his uprising against the white rajah is intriguing and a bit tragic, but i think it’s a good story to tell.
I thank you kindly for the suggestion. I inscribed it in my CHP Topics List, a list I will not be able to complete in my lifetime, even if I live to a hundred.
Im excited to see the return of Chinese Sayings podcast.
Season Four opener coming August 15, 2021.....gonna come out of the starting gate real strong with 画蛇添足. Don't miss it My Wise One.
Thank you from your number one fans and the from the whole villagers of serawai.
This is the history we known as legend, not available in school, or obscured from history as the Indonesian government effort to wipe out the Chinese history from Indonesia.
I'm honored to have my name mentioned by the great Laszlo Montgomery himself, and again thanks for this great entertainment and knowledge.
My deepest thanks Alexander. Looking forward to meeting you in Serawai one day. I've always treasured your listenership. Is there any place to get good Hakka food in Serawai? See you soon my friend!
Serawai is just a small remote village located just about in the middle of the island. Not exactly where the gongxi 公司 happen and need a real effort to get there.
Always entertaining and educational to hear the history of the Chinese people around the world.
Absolutely.
Thank you! Great content.
Again as mentioned in part 1, the sultans were clueless, envious and jealous of the Chinese capitalising on their land, they welcomed the Dutch to re enter Borneo. The Dutch had arms and bullied their way; they had the smart$. The Chinese didn't bring along the Imperial Military of that era. I am just stating the facts.
Thank you for your very interesting story, but a bit of correction; in regards to the late Lee Kwan Yew, the ex PM of Singapore; he and well as his parents were not from Kalimantan, instead his grandfather, Lee Hoon Liong migrated from China to Semarang, Central Java and married a Local Peranakan (Locally born Chinese) lady named The Lian Nio. His father, Lee Chin Koon was born in Semarang and migrated to Singapore.
I am most thankful for your insight into this great man.
@@ChinaHistoryPodcast Most of the Hakkas in Kuching, Bau and Engkilili are descendants of Lan Fang Republic. We all know Lee Kuan Yew was not from West Kalimantan.
laszlo great stuff! if you have time please look into liu shifu and the anarchist movement in china, despite what it sounds prior to the mid 20s they were actually very influential in chinese politics, seems like a good fit for your channel.. apologies if you already brushed over it in your other videos
Interesting topic. I checked his Wikipedia entry. I'll have to look around and see if there's more material on his life. Surely there is. I added him to my list of topics. Gracias, El Connador
@La-La i know haha, early 1900s china was absolutely crazy and so full of colorful characters, associations, and more, all contributing in some way to the formation of the modern chinese state. any regional contingent of the xinhai revolution can be covered in one or two episodes and it’ll still be interesting to watch. cheers to laszlo for showing to the greater world the nuances and epicness of chinese history!
@@ChinaHistoryPodcast ah and on the topic of anarchism feel free to check out an actual anarchist state that existed in china, the KPAM or shinmin prefecture. though a mainly korean story, it is tied to china in many ways (and is in modern day china) and is still a cool story
LAST OF 1800s Centry////
WOW////
Best knowledge on the concept of colonial imperialism. I come to your land and you pay me tax. LOL
So, Taiping Heavenly Kingdom next?
Working on it right now. I’m guessing 3-4 parts.
This will be a very good idea. I will be the on the first row.
