There should be an audible warning as well as the flashing dashboard, so easy to miss an alert when you are looking at the road which is what you are supposed to be doing.
I actually really enjoyed the long uncut video. It gave me more of a chance to watch what was happening on the road and the instrument screen. I'd love to see more of these!
Great video Bjorn, thanks for this, looking forward to my X arriving in Feb. The stop / go is impressive in traffic, I was unsure if it totally brings you to a stop (my Audi SQ5 doesn't) but you can see with confidence that it does in a smooth way
Great Video! Maybe on your next video you should test the car on roads with bad lane markings. That way we can see how the car reacts to inadequate lane markings. That will test how good the sensors, cameras and software really are.
Bjorn, do you know how one Tesla's radar signal/echo will be differentiated from another car's signal when they are in proximity to each other? Does the signal carry a unique identifier ie: VIN, timing, etc? It'd be interesting to know how they work in scenarios where they're nearly facing each other (opposite lanes) and side-by-side transmitting and receiving their radar/sonar signals.
I been following the tesla car videos by many lovely tesla owners and the more I watch these 1st hand tests and driving and the updates on the software changes the more I keep being amazed at how this new electric car tech is getting better! I was thinking it be very good indeed if the cars could maybe have a upgrade that let the drivers see the main important displays on speed etc. projected up onto the front windscreen so it was better to see when the car was driven by a person? there could be a special square of plastic put onto the windscreen to let the head up display be seen so the windscreen was the same one already installed and it just need a module to be set onto the top of the dash area like a small camera to project the driving details from the driver read outs by a bluetooth system? Thanks for your great clear video reviews by the way :)
I would have liked it more if the warning started out as audible, like the satnav-woman saying "Hold steering wheel" or something. Because, like you say, when you pay attention to the road, you can miss the dash signaling. I also would keep the set distance much higher, but you might have chosen 1 for demonstration purposes.
Very informative video, I was under impression the autopilot was used while you didn't even watch the road, like you could nap while your car drives you to work. I was wondering how this was allowed given current laws but now I understand how it works and this will save lives the more cars the technology is in, Tesla and Elon top my list of favorite and most respected people/companies.
GoPro doesn't have fixed focus and fixed aperture. What you probably mean is that you can't manually adjust brightness and focus distance, but I doubt you did that on your dashcam now either.
Bjorn... I keep my cruise set to 5 or 7 for higher speed travel so the car has more time to slow in the event of a sudden stop in front my me. In bumper to bumper traffic I put it down to 3 or 4 which seems to perform smoothly..
Interesting to see the difference when you have AP set to 80 kmh and get into a traffic jam and when you start setting the AP when you are already in a traffic jam: then it will always show "30" in the left circle and the car in front of you turns blue - it will only follow the car in front of you and no lines are visible anymore. But in your video, when AP is set to 80 kmh and you drive less than 30 in that traffic jam, it won't set the car in front of you in blue color and still shows the lines. That's different then what's still happening in the model S with 8.0 - when the car is slower than 30 kmh and AP is enabled with autosteer and TACC, then it forgets about the lines and turn the car in front of you in a blue color, no matter which speed you set beforehand. When it then goes faster again over 30 kmh, it will change to the lines again and the car in front gets the normal black color again. Very interesting.
Nissan's intelligent cruise control is a lot like that without the steering. Its very smooth and predictive. Sucks that it shuts off after being stopped for a while.
Weird question, since I'm in the US: At 5:33, you come up behind a Land Rover, and what I've noticed several times is that they always have a differently shaped number plate that can accommodate the space on the back of the vehicle, but I've only ever seen this on a Land Rover. How does that work? When you are doing your car registration, do you just request a different shape plate for your vehicle?
I see the car recognises the temporary road works speed sign (50Kmh) and it switched to 70Kmh when it saw the signs at the end of the restriction. Can the autopilot be set to recognise these speeds and adjust to what it's read or does it always have to be set by the driver?
Really shows off how much better AS keeps the car in lane vs humans. Every time he switches to manual the car goes over-line here and there (as it would for most of us)
Is it bad that when watching the autopilot, I thought that if I was on the right lane, and noticed a Tesla in the left lane, and noticed that the car was in autopilot, I could cut off the Tesla knowing that the Tesla would automatically brake and let me in?
Bjorn.... I understand it as you work delivering things in your Tesla? What sort of thigs would that be that a truck isn't used? Just interesting information.
HELLO BJORN ---whilst driving with the map in the top half of the screen--defaulted to (covering the buttons) can a driver operate the rear camera in the lower half of the screen ( constantly) --or is the map defaulting to complete screen.. ie no camera--- kind regards GRAHAM ARNOLD LEAF owner--- UK POSSIBLE X SOON..
I'm 20 and a huge Tesla fanatic hopefully I will get the Model 3 since its the cheaper model. If you know the price breakdown of the model 3 please make a video on it. Thanks and I subbed BTW.
Once Tesla adds radars to the sides of the car and the rear, I think tesla can achieve level 3 autonomy. Also they must improve front and rear camera to help out autopilot a bunch.
17:33 haha it just shows a gray box for the truck, its like "wtf is that, not a nice car thats for sure, meh whatever lets use the placeholder box" xD Good news, so even if there's a boat on the road, it'll detect it, as a box XD
No it depends on logic: Upon entering it, you only have one direction to go, so there's no point in indicating. It would be like indicating every time you drive a road curve. So it's rather confusing to indicate than it helps making the roads safer. Lawmakers know this hopefully in every country other than Absurdistan.
Do you recommend getting the car as soon as you can, or waiting until the end of 2017? Supposedly at end of 2017 autopilot should really take over. And a great video, liked how you kept up a decent conversation going, even though people might think you're crazy. Know that the voices on the internet will cheer you on ;)
Interesting license plate at 6:40 on the white car to the left. Can you pick custom numbers for your license plate in Norway? Custom names, yes, but numbers?
Alan Metsoja Thanks for summing it all up for me, brother. You make a good case. I'll have to drive both, but the technology in that Tesla is calling my name, especially that Auto Pilot feature.
FukeU1248 hahahaha true. The Systembolaget and moms are the other money suckers. Also in Sweden, you probably can't even join ISIS without a "personnummer".
About two-vehicle-projection. How will it project the following? (Yourcar-firstcarinfrontofyou-secondcarinfrontofyou) 1. You-motorcycle-car You-motorcycle-truck You-motorcycle-motorcycle 2. Too stressful man. Yeah try again Tesla, perhaps in a year it will be as fine tuned as Google Car is. It's such a shame Tesla got so much publicity suddenly, when Google has been working for many years on fine-tuning their system, which was already vastly superior to this, like 2 years ago.
Well, I agree with you but we had mobile phones for so long and then iPhone came... and changed whole game. They are getting all the data from 10,000 cars while google testing it in couple of hundreds cars.... Give it a year or two and it will be much better than Google.
True they have a ton of sample points now :) But the fact that Google made sure they fine-tune it as much as possible, to be as safe as possible, before even thinking about mass production, while Tesla took a shortcut and rather used an unrefined technology that is potentially unsafe, feels unfair. But yeah it's early adopters who are the test subjects, the wide audience will get a refined product :)
keith holden Easier said than done. You can do it once, maybe even twice, but before long they will catch up with you. Also, we are moving in to an increasingly Orwellian society. They want to put up cameras everywhere!! It's insane I tell you, insane!
im not talking about with traffic, there was no traffic for a large portion of the video while still on high way roads. of course roads are slow when there is congestion rofl. most interstates in america and highways in canada travel at 120/130 km/h when there is no congestion.
jeez bro, you must not have read my original post. watch at 2:17. notice how this is a 6 lane highway with barely any congestion flowing at 80/85 km/h. an equivalient road in north america would be a 60 mph/100 hm/h road flowing at around 120/130 km/h.
The standard highway speed limit in Norway is 110. It's lower here in this video as this is "in the city". Biggest problem on norwegian highways is people are going slow in the left lane and not moving to the right (when there is no traffic ofc).
the Nag is popping up in our car a little to frequently, I am using both hands with a light touch and the Nag pops up almost once a mile or less. I think instead or maybe along with message that the steering wheel gets a bump to aleart driver. I do not look at my display that much in that I'm keeping my eyes on traffic mostly. I don't like fighting with my car, so I think I'll just give AP a rest and enjoy driving the car myself, it's not for me anyway worth playing the Game of bumping the wheel When my hands are already there. Useless...... just saying
Good thing you showed the road and the display. It helps us understanding better how it works autopilot and what to expect from it.
There should be an audible warning as well as the flashing dashboard, so easy to miss an alert when you are looking at the road which is what you are supposed to be doing.
Agreed!
Agree, it will be even worse in Model 3 if they don't have some kind of head up or at least some kind of led or indication in front of the driver.
Or maybe you should hold the steering wheel?
If you hold the steering wheel it is not autonamous steering.
mikey8156 still though you should never really rely on technology to do the work for you
I actually really enjoyed the long uncut video. It gave me more of a chance to watch what was happening on the road and the instrument screen. I'd love to see more of these!
" SO SMOOTH I CAN EAT A CUP NOODLE WHILE IT DRIVE ME"
omg
11:25 It did the merging! Unbeliveable
My car is so boring....I have to drive it myself and everything!
train your child, problem solved..
Athaariq Ardiansyah 😂😂😂
or your dog
CoreFreddy man... dog only has no any hands
Max Murden people in the future would miss driving their own car.
12:25 I held my breath
the car is black he said KKK so the car showed him
lol
+SuperDboy4 LOL
A quick test for you. What happens if you reset the dash and/or the main display? Does that reset the autopilot?
I like this video a lot. You have demonstrated a lot of things and showed us the "complete" autopilot...
No soup for you.... come back one year!!
love it lmao
Great video Bjorn, thanks for this, looking forward to my X arriving in Feb. The stop / go is impressive in traffic, I was unsure if it totally brings you to a stop (my Audi SQ5 doesn't) but you can see with confidence that it does in a smooth way
white model s in the right lane at 10:15
grey model s in the left lane at 23:10
Thanks for the Autopilot demonstration and tour of Oslo. Very cool.
Its wierd to see a youtube video around where i live, there is like no videos relating Norway :P
“No soup for you” I could have guessed that you like Seinfeld. Love your video’s. I’ll join the model X squad in a few months.
Great Video! Maybe on your next video you should test the car on roads with bad lane markings. That way we can see how the car reacts to inadequate lane markings. That will test how good the sensors, cameras and software really are.

Nice composite video. Right way to do a Tesla AP video
I been following the tesla car videos by many lovely tesla owners and the more I watch these 1st hand tests and driving and the updates on the software changes the more I keep being amazed at how this new electric car tech is getting better! have the car driven via satelite internet from a guy in india for 1 dollar per hour.
And he will stealthy register on 10 platforms so he can drive 10 customers at the same time :-)
Yep that sounds about right lol :)
keith holden hahaha 😂😂😂
I would have liked it more if the warning started out as audible, like the satnav-woman saying "Hold steering wheel" or something. Because, like you say, when you pay attention to the road, you can miss the dash signaling.
I also would keep the set distance much higher, but you might have chosen 1 for demonstration purposes.
25:45 Hahahaa you have to go to church and ask forgiveness .. I died
Great video, well done Bjorn. As always.
The stress I suffer from letting the car go on autopilot seems to be more exhausting than driving the car by myself
Its good one ... i have enjoyed the complete drive .. thanks for sharing.
Don't like GoPro? With the new GoPro 5 you can adjust all kinds of stuff + it has live stablization and it doesn't look fish'eye anymore.
Make a video from the backseat how you are not touching anything and the car is driving by itself ?
GoPro doesn't have fixed focus and fixed aperture. What you probably mean is that you can't manually adjust brightness and focus distance, but I doubt you did that on your dashcam now either.
u should do the classic waving your hands outside the window
Bjorn... I keep my cruise set to 5 or 7 for higher speed travel so the car has more time to slow in the event of a sudden stop in front my me. In bumper to bumper traffic I put it down to 3 or 4 which seems to perform smoothly..

When it then goes faster again over 30 kmh, it will change to the lines again and the car in front gets the normal black color again. Very interesting.
I wonder if it's because the camera has a higher point of view so it can see the lines better in the Model X?
Hm, I guess not. I tried it after the Update and now it is like shown in this Video - so it was a matter of V7.0
I havent heard the term 'Sprites' for a looong time!
13:54 You can see the car glitching out and detecting the bus as a car and lorry at the same time.
Id like the dash also, please use that in more videos.
This is the future it's comfortable, safe and cool
After passing the roadwork traffic jam , those speeds of 40 km/h look extremely fast now.
When you are doing your car registration, do you just request a different shape plate for your vehicle?
why turn auto steering off if they don't have their hands on the wheel, would they not crash then especially if cruise control was activated?
Seems like a great driving aid
I see the car recognises the temporary road works speed sign (50Kmh) and it switched to 70Kmh when it saw the signs at the end of the restriction. Can the autopilot be set to recognise these speeds and adjust to what it's read or does it always have to be set by the driver?
i know im late but i will just leave the answer there for others: the autopilot camera can recognise street sign and they also have gps+ map data
Really shows off how much better AS keeps the car in lane vs humans. Every time he switches to manual the car goes over-line here and there (as it would for most of us)
Why not start auto pilot sooner? I would love to see how it worked in round-abouts.
Is it bad that when watching the autopilot, I thought that if I was on the right lane, and noticed a Tesla in the left lane, and noticed that the car was in autopilot, I could cut off the Tesla knowing that the Tesla would automatically brake and let me in?
Sounds like he had a puls of 180 through the whole drive :D
Something about the sound of your voice makes these vlogs/videos turn this into a story.
Very informative video. Thanks!
23:55 Gay cruising spot? 😂
This video is awesome
I'm 20 and a huge Tesla fanatic hopefully I will get the Model 3 since its the cheaper model. If you know the price breakdown of the model 3 please make a video on it. Thanks and I subbed BTW.
I want one of those.thanks mate
You forgot to unplug your charging cable!
Other than that, great video
How did you get the display in the middle of the window? Amazing
ChickenOfSpeed thanks
Once Tesla adds radars to the sides of the car and the rear, I think tesla can achieve level 3 autonomy. Also they must improve front and rear camera to help out autopilot a bunch.
6:34 It does not detect motorbikes, But maybe because bike was a bit too far over to the right?
Would the first time autopilot always make the driver's heart fly into his mouth?
Why are your highbeams on the entire time
Good video quantity
17:33 haha it just shows a gray box for the truck, its like "wtf is that, not a nice car thats for sure, meh whatever lets use the placeholder box" xD Good news, so even if there's a boat on the road, it'll detect it, as a box XD
Pretty sure Tesla knows and would account for a semi-truck's trailer haha
00:09 you don't indicate when entering a roundabout, only when you exit it.
Depends where you live.
No it depends on logic: Upon entering it, you only have one direction to go, so there's no point in indicating. It would be like indicating every time you drive a road curve. So it's rather confusing to indicate than it helps making the roads safer. Lawmakers know this hopefully in every country other than Absurdistan.
Hi there excellent video as usual thanks.
In your video you mention that there are more and more Lexus cars was that right.
Think he said "X's", as in Tesla Model X
Excellent video. You have a new subscriber ;)
I think Tesla should play while notification Samantha's Fox "touch me" instead of beeping;-)
Do you recommend getting the car as soon as you can, or waiting until the end of 2017? Supposedly at end of 2017 autopilot should really take over.
And a great video, liked how you kept up a decent conversation going, even though people might think you're crazy. Know that the voices on the internet will cheer you on ;)
Demi God The longer you wait, the more features you get. But the price might be higher. New cars should support the supercharger v3 speed.
Thank you! Will be subscribed, hopefully, the microphone crackle has been resolved.
have you tried automatic lane changes
0:56
56 km/h in a 50 zone?
Will you not get done for speeding?
scatcat1994 -3/4 correction, + 2-3km allowance
I clicked the video because i saw a mk6 golf in the thumbnail
How did you know it was called a Sprite? ☺
why tesla dont have fast chargin points like buses?in minutes full charge
Was you driving in sweden in that video or in norway
wich model x you have? and where you drive it? its not the US right?
Interesting license plate at 6:40 on the white car to the left. Can you pick custom numbers for your license plate in Norway? Custom names, yes, but numbers?
Henrik Mikael Kristensen no i dont think so
Henrik Mikael Kristensen not at the moment, but they are trying to pass a bill that allows it
Henrik Mikael Kristensen It is allowed next year
No but there is a Mercedes SLR with license plate DL10000 it's a special plate.
Somewhere in Skane ?
ved bryn, driver de fremdeles med veiarbeid? har de ikke holdt på i sånn 3 år?
Where is this filmed. In Oslo?
Why did I watch the whole video...? I don't even have my driver's licence yet lol, not to mention the money to afford such a car
Performance or Intelligence with some performance? Carrera 911 or Tesla? Decisions, decisions.
Alan Metsoja Thanks for summing it all up for me, brother. You make a good case. I'll have to drive both, but the technology in that Tesla is calling my name, especially that Auto Pilot feature.
Alan Metsoja I'll also say that when you're willing to pay those price tags, fuel economy is not a problem.
can you attack wrist weights to steering wheel so you dont have to hold steering wheel?
attach*
This is why i bought a 911! I like driving!
And i always use the bus lane!!
Okay.
hhhhhh I love your logo man. Its the whirlpool that sucks half my money.
Actually i thing the total you pay is around 90% depending on what you spend your money on. Swedes fear this logo more than that of ISIS :D
FukeU1248 hahahaha true. The Systembolaget and moms are the other money suckers.
Also in Sweden, you probably can't even join ISIS without a "personnummer".
Awesome.
I wonder what's the point of automatic steering if you still have to hold the steering wheel.
to pay more
they are like beta tester. need real world data in order to further the development of self driving cars.
Autopilot ? More like temporary assistant in Alpha 0.43 stage. Good video though.
Why is he driving so slowly? Like 80 kms behind trucks at 22 minutes mark.
I wish I could afford one of those lol... but seems that ing in Serbia is doomed, got my self a Alfa Romeo 156 from 2004... barely...

6:35 Damn on the taxi and buss way
11:20 in the dashboard it look like the got fling vary far and it’s funny
Tesla needs a "Pursuit mode". Like K.I.T.T. had!
saw the bike and then the car saw the bike
WOW
harware 1 or 2?
at 7:44. Did the car detect the 50 signs or was it already programmed into the navigation that it was a 50 road?
The car will read signs, even temporary ones.
wll be fun putting paper sign of 150kmh over the real sign when all cars are automated
Easy way to get years in prison, since the whole road will be rigged with cameras.
Ill wear my clown suit that way theres 100s of suspects .Maybe put a 5mph or kph sign instead. No accidents that way :)
keith holden Easier said than done. You can do it once, maybe even twice, but before long they will catch up with you. Also, we are moving in to an increasingly Orwellian society. They want to put up cameras everywhere!! It's insane I tell you, insane!

+Florian Gerlich That's true. Watch the rest of the video and you will hear them.
Bjørn Nyland bad Internet connexion here, do not manage to watch it until the end :(
People should watch the whole video before commenting. This goes for other videos as well ;)
Bjørn Nyland are you able to use cruise control after the 3rd strike with auto steer?
Bjørn Nyland cool
autopilot shows a bus as a simple car? this needs much much improvement.
If you cant jump in your car, set destination, then go to sleep, its not worth calling it autonomous.
@ArkaelDren Could not have said it any better myself.
ArkaelDren it's autopilot like what commercial airplanes have. Still the pilot needs to be there.
That's why they don't. They do have an autonomous mode, but not open to the public.
Why I watched all of this?!
the Nag is popping up in our car a little to frequently, I am using both hands with a light touch and the Nag pops up almost once a mile or less.
