Have you ever noticed how much time people spend discussing the power button on the Mac mini? Apple makes one small imperfection, and the entire tech world fixates on it. It’s a strategy that ends up being more effective than spending vast amounts on advertising or PR events.

you wish . your thinking is very very flawed . this type of marketing technique is applied to products that are would bring little to no interest otherwise think apple mac wheels or mac pro stand . the mac mini is not in need of such stunts and would have been talked about regardless of the placement of the power button . furthermore there is literally nothing wrong with that placement you turn it on once and let it rest there forever .not only that but its also a more aesthetically pleasing design choice
Additionally the need to lift it up further emphasizes the small size and weight of this powerful mini computer and creates a bond with an inanimate object. MacBooks are highly desirable in part because of the feel of their sturdy aluminium unibody chassis. But you normally don't hold desktop computers in your hands that often. People have strong feelings about their keyboards, but not necessarily about the box that hosts the computer. And if you ever need to service the Mini and turn it around to open it up, the Power button is suddenly on top right where you need it.
The power button in the bottom is inspired by Steve Jobs.He wanted to have no power button at all in iPhone but , that was impossible to achieve. In his half of his Life time he struggled with the idea that he can die any day and he related power switch with dying. He didn't like things that could be switched off.

I don't like apple. A strong android user cuz iPhone doesn't have what i need. But i use an imac with magic mouse. I'll correct you that i once charged my magic mouse for 30 seconds and it went a whole day without me realising 😅😅. Thing is strong like mad. On a full charge it does 2 months of everyday use. 8hrs daily minimum.
And yes i do demanding stuff in Houdini, after effects and resolve

The goal in the design seems clear to me… avoid users using the Magic Mouse while connected. For the look of it (it’s supposed to be wireless!), comfort (not tied to a wire), to avoid being charged while also operating (I imagine is better for the hardware). The connector itself it’s not only below but the mouse doesn’t even function while it charges…
it would be funny to see the complainers have a new Magic Mouse with the conector in a “correct” place only to realize anyway the mouse doesn’t function if it is being charged.
It’s a bad design compensated by the fast charge feature, but still a bad design. Much like how the power button placement for the Mac mini is bad even if it’s compensated by how seldom people actually use it. The real question is how willing are people to put up with said bad design. Speaking for me personally, why put up with a goofy charging spot and an even goofier ergonomics situation when the Magic Trackpad has neither issue?
As Student, I can keep in my bag! Don't care about power button, only care about price!

@@benti_dmg472 you should be able to use any monitor at schools and libraries I assume as long as you have the cables available, too. Or when you commute from your home town to where you live during the semester. But not during lectures without any IT equipment, that's for sure. Mac mini + iPad + keyboard is already too much for me 😅 I'd prefer the MacBook instead still.

I'm not gonna lie, but Andrew quickly solved the power button issue with that roll of duct tape by placing the Mac mini on top of it for elevated access.
You don't turn _off_ your computer via power button - you use the Shut Down… command for that.
What you _do_ use the power button for is to turn it on - and you really shouldn't turn off your computer regularly because it _should_ run maintenance tasks at night.

I’ve upgraded to the M4 Pro over upgrading my MacBook Pro M1 and that was a great decision. This thing is a beast….and save some scratch…still traveling with the MacBook Pro but for the studio the Mac Mini M4 is an absolute beast!

the power button only turns it on, does not turn it off. it is meant for you to turn it on, put it on ur desk and forget about it, idk why ppl make it such a big deal.
If you have a problem with the Thunderbolt ports at the back just turn yourMac Mini around so they are at the front… 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
For the thunderbolt on the back issue, do people that operate with portable SSD's not just leave a Thunderbolt 4 cable plugged into the back at all times and route the cable to a convenient spot?

Thundebolt 4 Dock from OWC is $218. and has a Thunderbolt 4 port on the front. CalDigit TS4 is $380 at amazon with USB-C ports on the front.

My thinking is that the Power Button has been kept to ensure that the heat dissipates on the maximum area (Top & Corners/Sides) easily as heat spreads and moves upwards, it is a smaller design, on the front/top and side and when you turn off the PC again you lift Mac Mini to dissipate the heat (Back Side); because of the Power Button. Another reason might be the system's design as Power IC/Circuit might be easily available/directly connected, for the button on the back hand side, lesser usage of complex wiring on smaller device/design. :)

For me, I don't even mind having an external storage plugged into the back of my Mac, the problem is the software aspect. I hate having to choose between drives when installing something. Or when you're looking for the location of a file, and have to check multiple drives on the same machine. But I feel like that's the only way to actually get a good deal with these things because the markup for upgrades is so insane.
First off, the storage and RAM prices are similar to what you find from Microsoft or Lenovo. Secondly, move your home folder to a big external SSD and your files will be there (except for the MacOS packaged apps, which still will be on the internal storage.)
A am curious, what will happen to all unsold M2 and M3 Macs when M4 is here? Apple, at least in Sweden, does not really make any really significant deals on older hardware.

I bought this computer with upgraded storage to replace my 2018 Intel mini. This computer is AWESOME. I love it.
It IS annoying that Apple sell the Mac mini as a truly "low power consuming" personal computer and then place an On/Off switch in a way that make people never turn it off. They even brag about how it is their first carbon neutral computer. It is almost as if they are afraid of making something perfect. They just have to leave something in the design not perfect so there is a possibility to improve something later on in the future. The Iphone has felt just like that too the last five years...
I’ve seen PCs this small for years. It’s amazing how tech reviewers seem unaware of this and keep claiming, “This is the smallest desktop computer ever.” The Intel NUC, which measures just 4 by 4 inches, has been around for years and is even smaller.

Those PCs are for very basic office tasks. This Mac mini can easily run 96 tabs.

@@User-actSpacing Not quite right! I've had an Intel NUC for over 3 years now, loaded with 64GB RAM and 3TB SSD storage. It handles a Plex Server like a champ, supporting up to 5 concurrent transcoded streams, all while running a VM in the background and Docker with at least 3 containers up and running nonstop. It’s been rock solid; no issues at all. That’s real-world use for 3+ years, not just a quick benchmark test!
So much talk about the power button on the bottom…. I don’t remember the last time I pressed the power button as I let the system sleep, I never turn it off…. the only thing I don’t care for (and this isn’t a deal breaker at all) is the audio jack on the front. Makes for a messy setup for external speakers which almost everyone will be using. That makes me scratch my head much more than the power button.
For the question they had about if any Mac had thunderbolt on the front. M1 ultra did for sure. Where it had the 4 on the back and 2 thunderbolt on front as well. And there’s no logo on the front ones.
Looking to upgrade my intel i5 MacBook Pro from 2020 to a newer Mac (doesn’t have to be pro) with Apple silicon. Will use for full-stack development. Which model would you recommend? Thanks!
Future proof.
Apple missed the opportunity to make the top Apple Logo the power button all the would have had to do is turn the internal boards upside down from their current orientation and it would work. But I understand why they put it on the bottom when the Mini is so popular in the server world and the racks they use them in!
As a software developer I’ve never needed an SD card reader. So in my case the Mac mini is an awesome machine!

@@zigzagger7893 It did not. It was 6.5x6.5x2. Versus 5x5x2. It's much closer in form factor than the flat one we had in between.
I don’t think you can say the Mac mini button or the conector in Magic Mouse is “objectively” a bad place… only if you ignore why it is in that place or you think your subjective disdain for the design it’s the only metric to rate the design… I think in the Mac mini the position of the power button tells us “you shouldn’t use this button as often as you are used to with PCs”. Or something like that.
And of course, in the Magic Mouse the goal is you don’t use your Magic Mouse wired (it becomes not funtional while charging anyway, for the same reason).
Why not place it upside down on the desk so that the power button is facing up?
Its crazy how people are amazed by the tiny form factor of M4 Mac mini calling it an engineering marvel. I have used this form factor with Intel NUCs back in 2017.

The M2 Ultra has 6 Thunderbolt ports! The front ports are also Thunderbolt.
The power Button should not be a problem:
1. Nobody really turns off a Mac and if you do, there is no real reason as the power consumption of the Mac mini is really ridiculous
2. It’s so small and not heavy at all, so it shouldn’t be a problem moving it to turn it on.
Let’s focus on the productive parts.

It's easy enough to fix all the annoying things about a Mac Mini can be alleviated by simply changing the way you set it up on a desktop. The way I'll have my Mac Mini setup, the current form is perfectly fine. Maybe not ideal, but within a month I will spend zero time thinking about it.

This is true. All Macs turn on by keyboard these days. So the power button is only used for the extremely rare case the entire OS freezes up and you need a reboot.

@@flyingmonkeys96 I agree it's objectively bad. I have an older wired apple I prefer the key action and never having to charge so it can't turn the mac on. In this day and age for environmental reasons its good to shut devices off when not in use. The problem with the location is there is no reason for it. If they wanted to get cute the logo could be the button. I have sleep mode disabled because I often leave the computer on to encode or up load before going to bed so I can't have the computer going to sleep. The power button isn't a deal breaker its bad design.
I saw a comment a while ago that from Apple it’s design language, they want people just putting their Mac to sleep instead of a full power off. A change that also was the case with the new MacBooks. Much to my dismay, you can’t power on a MacBook with giving it power like you could on intel MacBooks meaning I couldn’t turn on my whole setup from a power conditioner with my MacBook living in clamshell mode in a stand. Embracing the sleep culture just made things either since they seem firm on this for some reason.

The guy had a pretty clean track record; now he made one mistake and later apologized on Twitter. And you people are acting like hyenas on every single video of his tearing him apart. Like he is a pdf file or something. Get over it, people.

It’s not that he’s doing anything an average person wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to do, it’s that he has established his brand to be above that and has done a handful of things within a short amount of time. He’s in a position where he needs to hold himself above reproach and set an example for the average person without a platform like this and he has dropped the ball. He’s human, but that doesn’t absolve him from responsibility or accountability.
He has made like three mistakes this year, the last one was just the biggest. Also going 96mph in a 35 zone is not a mistake lmao, it’s a crime with intent.
Constructive criticism - all the reviewers complaining about the prices of upgrades should stop complaining! Look at your own lives and complain about what you have "overspent" on. Let people buy what they want. You are not authorities on what is a good value for the people. Also, I participated in the Apple trade-in program. That makes buying a more expensive setup more interesting. I can get money for my next machine after trading in this one. I haven't heard any reviewers talk about that. An M4 Pro is more powerful and efficient than any PC I could purchase at that same price. There is no competition. I'm a PC tech and I can't understand why this isn't talked about more often. No I don't like the price of the upgrades and the lack of upgradability or repairability. But I have used an M1 Mac Mini for the last 2 years, and I am just fine living without what I thought was important. Cheers!

I’ll agree with much of the complaints. But the notch is really required for FaceID. There hasn’t been a technology that allows it to go behind the screen. And it’s a really good technology. Remember when Google tried to do the same thing and had that really deep notch? They just gave up on it. So while I’d like to see the button on the Mini on the front, my wife just got one. Unless you’re first installing this thing, you pretty much NEVER use that power button. With the TB ports on the back, you need a TB cable anyway. So just plug the cable into a rear TB port and leave it there, then just have it out to the front and plug your TB device into that. It’s really not a big deal. My PC friends have cables all over the place.

I got the Mac mini m4pro and then the price ladder got me and I just got the MacBook Pro for a few hundred more 😅
David gets the Mac Studio's hardware wrong so many times in this video lol. Repeatedly calling it the M2 Pro processor (instead of Max and Ultra depending on configuration). If we are comparing base models $599 Mini vs $1999 Studio, even with the older chip, there are compelling differences. Twice the ram, twice the storage. 10gb ethernet, more ports (8 vs 5), SD card, more GPU cores and HDMI 2.1. But the M4 Pro Mini is a better deal with the 10GB upgrade at $1499 until a M4 Max Studio comes out.
Let's hope he doesn't endanger any innocent children this time.

Personally it doesn’t bother and I’ll make this short why. All of my logi mouses and wireless keyboards are at the bottom of the mouse and the wireless keyboard is on the vertical back of the light indicator on button. And I think since Apple has their on-screen close and downsize on the left, whereas on any other computer it’s to the right. I think Apple decided not to confuse us anymore to compete against the standard. So, they just adapted to the norm instead of always making everything unique if that makes sense. Sorry I couldn’t make this explanation shorter.

Tha power button make people lift it and press it and everytime they do it they realise how small and lightweight it is and they admire it every press of power button. The respect for mac mini in the consumer's mind increses with every press. That's a brilliant design. Next level manipulation.

I'd be shocked if companies aren't already working on gadget that will attached to the side and allow you to turn on the Mini without lifting it up! Remember the oval snap-on grip for the worst mouse design in history, Apple's Round first iMac mouse! Now that was a BAD idea. But READ my 1st post on the Magic Mouse!
