      3:39 that's not true, PS1 output 240P resolution NOT 480i. Also wrong information about PS2. The PS2 outputs PS1 games at original PS1 resolution and that's 240P even when you are using PS2 component cables still just 240P

    I thought it's not possible to force enable progressive scan on any game on PS2, especially PS1 titles. I remember that it was available only in certain PS2 games, sometimes even required holding cross+triangle when starting the game.
    Are you certain that image is 480p, instead of 480i? Using component cable improves the image greatly, but it doesn't magically make it de-interlaced.
    Also, as someone already said, it would be cool if you included PS2/PS3 filtering options to the mix. But apart of all this, great video!

    FYI; the “dots”are dithering artefacts that are usually masked by lower quality video signals. 🙂 they used to be used to give textures more depth and complexity on older hardware however on modern hardware/displays this dithering looses its intended effect.

      @norbertgyuroczki3307 Год назад +1

      Old comment, but true! This is ONE of the main reasons retro gamers collect CRT monitors/televisions, because of the technology, the display had a natural "blur" and the dithering dots weren't visible!

    I prefer playing the original PS1 version on an emulator with x2 resolution on(no stupid filters). It looks ok with x4 res, but some games just look worse with very high resolution display coupled with VERY low res textures. When you find that medium, it looks awesome and doesn't take away from that nostalgia as well. Also some FYI, at 4:09 those dots that you are seeing is "dithering" used in PS1 titles, this can be disabled in an emulator. Dithering was a technique used to make shadows and fog type effects that only worked on low res monitors and resolutions. I'm actually confused as to why they kept the dithering in all of the upscaled ports, because clearly as you pointed out, it looks ugly.

      Best way to me is the improved emulated version on the DC on a CRT TV through RGB. Double res, anti-aliasing, texture filter and the CRT all together are gorgeous and feels "authentic". You just need a decent controller though.

    There's aren't that many people that actually know about the Ultimate version of Metal Gear Solid for PS1. It's called "Metal Gear Solid: Integral". It was only released in Japan. YET, they use the English audio (voice acting) and subtitles.
    The big benefits of this version are the following:
    - You can now SHOOT in first person view! (you heard me right).
    - If you clear the game to earn the tuxedo, Meryl gets her own version of the sneaking suit!
    - There is now a "Very Easy" mode where Snake starts with an MP5!
    - Two new Codec channels were added.
    - An "Alternate Round" option is available where guards are placed in different locations for the areas and patrol differently. This mode also changes the angles of certain cut-scenes.
    Those are the biggest additions, but there's a few more things that aren't a big deal.

  • @AndddLegacy
    @AndddLegacy 4 года назад +2

    There's actually two versions of Metal Gear Solid on PS3. The disc version and the PSN version. They look almost completely different thanks to the differences in software emulation. The PSN version's edges are softer and less sharp than the disc version, but the horizontal pixel width of the PSN version is uniform to the original PS1 resolution which prevents shimmering artifacts (present in the disc version) when the image moves left or right. No one has laid out these differences in a video to date.

    Hey i know this video is old, but how did you output your dreamcast? Composite? VGA? Im doing VGA upscaled through a framemeister and I’m not getting the dark issue. My settings were optimized via a pre-set for the beharbros toro cable which was capable of utilizinf either the SCART or VGA signal of the D. Its actually quite the treat. Expensive setup though.

    As a big fan of the matrix, Twin Snakes is my favourite version of MGS because of the over the top cutscenes. I get that people wanted a more realistic, down to earth snake. But we are talking about a guy who is a clone, who killed his own dad after he tried to kill him, then finds out he has to kill his brother, and fighting genome soldiers with his DNA, while also fighting a collection of supernatural freaks from foxhound. If the dude who had "psychokintetic" abilities or the cyborg ninja didnt suspend your disbelief then idk what will.

    I like Twin Snakes cause it was released around the same time as MGS3. They made Solid Snake(Prime Big Boss cloned as younger man) more superhuman and intense to match it with Big Boss' over the top action in Part 3. PSX has more passionate voice acting but I like to think that they remade Liquid Snake & Ocelot with Major Ocelot and MGS2 'Ocelot' fresh in their mind.

    I'm sure someone mention this already But the ability to shoot in first person mode was not introduced in Twin Snakes. Twin Snakes runs on the MGS2 engine. So all the things you could do in MGS2 you could now do in MGS1. Oh and the difference in cinematic has to do with the socom you probly didn't have it in your inventory. And the reason the PS2 has smoother texturing is that it has a nice feature to smooth them out:) Great video regardless.

    Great comparison! Didn't even know about the Been version. There is first person aiming by default in MGS Integral for PC. The PC version is missing buffering effects which is probably why they censored Johnny. At one point they even wanted to add eyes to the faces but were told not to as it would effect the art style. There's also an extra weapon ala the MP5SD and some slightly lower quality music.

    Those dots are called Dithering. It's a dot pattern that is used in place of transparency sometimes. It doesn't show up on the original or the component cable as much because they soften the signal and produce something closer to actual transparency. You're seeing the dot pattern more on HDMI because it is much higher resolution and it's a clean, crisp signal.

  • @ShogunGin0
    @ShogunGin0 7 лет назад

    The amount of dots and noise is called 'dithering', and it was a common thing done on games of that time to decrease how much the console had to render at any one time, so as not to cause excess slowdown on the hardware. Playing the games through composite video tended to mask the issue since composite is a blurry enough video cable that the dithered pixels kinda smooth out. Playing with s-video or RGB or with emulation without filters clearly display all the dithered pixels.
