  • Hi guys I done this job all solo in a few days had to learn to weld as well. I got some images but did not have my video stuff with me and wouldn't have managed as it was a big job. I used a lot of stuff but I'm only going to link the sills and some spare clips. Your need a bit of rust treatment if its as late along as mine as you couldn't cut it all out but do remove all the loose. I wont sell this car on as that rust will take a fresh hold I think again fairly soon.
Well worth doing tho as if its not to far along you could really save your motor. Your see if you do it that the trim holes are the main cause way to many places to chip the paint ect to let rust in and the trim is holding water there.
Really nice over sill I only had to drill new trim holes and bend the back bit up a bit, I held it tight with a bit of wood on a jack to push it tight wile welding it.
Sil link and user incase links dead..
USER also does S type sill kit : luxtec2012

Also get a pack of fixings for trim as a lot of bits break up

FairPlay to this man for having a go. It surely is an act of pure bravery to tackle the rust on an X400. It says in the comments that he sounds like Stuart Pearce. I bet he wishes he was as Stuart wouldn't need a jack or grinder he'd just lift the car up with one hand and bite the rust off.

I have a 2007 X type will have to check mine out, looks like a horror show. Just a small tip. Where I live is really bad for rust because of humidity and sea air. I know someone who has a 40 year old Peugeot which is rust free. Once a year he sprays a mix of old oil and diesel into panels and has no rust problems as a result.

It's a pity x type have plastic covers over the sills. Then you could see the rust starting and treat it before it got to this stage. I'm dreading taking my covers off. But I'm going to have to do it. Well best of luck with your repairs.

You must remove the plastic covers once a year to check for rust and treat it. I paint mine with zinc based undercoat and spray waxoil every where. The inside of the covers have traps in them that collect mud and need washing out every year. Its a poor design but as long as the rust has not taken a hold it can be kept at bay for the sake of an afternoons work once a year. Had mine 8 years great cars.

I'm not a great fan of Waxoil, it can mix with water and cause as much rust as it is suppose to prevent.

I think you should check the water ducts from the windscreen. On my S-Type the water drains thru the bodywork and the run-off exits behind the front wheel arch in the sill area. A sure cause of corrosion - easy enough to re-route with a length of hose and a few cable ties.

Weld quality isn't your fault, you need a good base metal for a decent one. I'm surprised you managed to keep this car on the road!

What would you have to pay for a good body shop to do this job (inner and outer parts) right per side?

secret to any welding is to clean the metal as best you can get it to shine

The sills are a huge design fault.

it's such a shame on these lovely stylish cars to get this rotten,i have two of the x type i love them ,i too had both sills welded on one of them,it's really sad.i could understand cars of the 60s,70s,getting rotten as we all know, but but an x type of 2001 on... already with the sills rotten it is sad i think.

Ive seen so many X-Types at body shops having their sills replaced. My Corolla has plastic side skirts but they are sealed and have plenty of drainage holes.

got the same job to do on my jag, how much did you pay for the sills, the sill I found online was £250 :-( so we are going to try patching it, but it might turn out to be bad once we start looking closer at it.
