I was serving in the Navy and i was assigned to funeral detail. I didn’t wanna do it but my training told i had to. I was in several funerals and it was hard at 1st hold my emotions back but i learned how. After several services my wife noticed that i became kind a stone cold. She said, i had ice water in my veins. She was worried about this duty aggravating my PTSD from previous deployments. Now that im not serving anymore i still can see the families faces and expressions in my head. Of the duties i ever done in uniform is this one. RIP my fellow heroes.
I’m hoping to be an honor guard so this will be something I’ll experience if they let me in. I watch Arlington videos a lot, it’s weird to other people and I don’t know why I do it, but I do. My emotions are weird when I watch them, I don’t feel happy quite opposite, but I don’t shed a single tear, I just say RIP to the family member and if I was there and allowed to, I would comfort that family who is grieving the loss of someone special. Thanks for your service man, no matter your duty, we appreciate it.
As a British Veteran I salute my overseas brothers and sisters and their sacrifice. Bless you all and the families who have lost a loved one in the name of freedom.
Like you I also did funeral details while serving. I was able to keep my emotions in check until I was asked to be part of the detail for my grandfather. I am not ashamed to admit I was crying like a baby when I presented the flag to my grandmother. I was never able to bring myself to be part of another detail after that day. Remaining emotionless for someone you don't know is hard enough but for family and friends it's practically impossible.
These wars have taken so many of our beautiful young men and women. God Bless them all. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. B.J. You will never be forgotten ever.

I served in the United States Army for three years and was hurt and forced out. I never thought I’d have to leave my Army or Military family and the day I was discharged I cried because I didn’t want to leave my post. I have been to so many different Military funerals and at the same exact moment every single time I fell apart in someone else’s arms, and that being when they fired the twenty one gun salute. I have watched my Commander hand a folded flag of the love of my life, my best friend, my wife in my heart and the best woman I’ve ever known was laid to rest. I lost my cousin last December to suicide. He served in the Air Force for 7 years before retiring. His funeral was the first funeral I’ve been to in my 19 years of being here at the time. It was the most beautiful, yet heartbreaking experience I’ve ever had. My boyfriend is currently serving Active Duty in the Navy. He wants to train to be a SEAL when his current contract is up. It terrifies me, but also makes me proud. Im terrified that if he does, that one day he’ll come back in a casket. But I’m so very proud of him and my cousin and all my other family and friends that are serving or have served. But what I’m mostly trying to join is the honor guard for any branch, country or emergency service, at least one person has to be there to let the fallen know that even in death we’ll protect them. I would consider myself a kind of cold hearted person, I watch several military funerals all the time, but when I hear the grief it hits me hard. I almost lost it when they presented the flag to a little girl instead of a grown up. No child should bury their loved one that young and no child should have to be presented the flag. I just want to comfort that little girl and tell her she’ll be alright. Fly high fallen soldiers, we’ll make sure nobody leaves you behind or forgets about you.
