One thing to consider: The S1 Pro uses an array of drivers (3 pointing in diff directions supported by a 4th LF driver) vs the EV which is a 2way design (ie a HF+LF 2 driver config like a typical PA speaker). This means the dispersion characteristics are going to be different and is also the reason the EV will certainly win on SPL when measured at a single point in space (as it would be by the measurement mic picking up a 1khz signal fed into the speaker). The S1's strength is that when playing program material, it will provide about 90db evenly over a wider coverage area vs the EV which is going to blast 100+ db in more of a beam of focused sound towards a part of the audience. Different tools for different jobs in some ways. The S1 is designed to provide a good overall sound to a wider audience while sacrificing some energy (bass) and overall volume. The EV will throw its sound to a narrower slice of the audience but will hit harder and louder, meaning it really needs multiple units for even coverage. But two EV's would give excellent coverage and sound beating the S1 hands down sonically, but then youre paying a lot more to get that. That is why the S1 makes a good case for itself, usually it is just 'enough' to satisfy most needs.
I think in the area of ceremony PA, the S1 got it down due to its wide dispursion. I think the EV would make for a great side fill for when you need to get some extra reinforcement in a tight area.

I just traded in an S1Pro for the Everse8 and got going with it today. To start I just connected my cellphone by Bluetooth and played different kinds of music from Spotify. It was disappointing with a lower HiFi sound as compared to the S1Pro!! I thought, crap, what have I done!? Why the heck did I trade in?? But I didn't get discouraged and explored, tweaked, and played. There is a hell of a lot of adjusting to do with this next-generation speaker! The EQ settings alone get me cross-eyed!!! After a couple of hours of adjusting, tweaking and experimenting, I have decided I did the right thing trading in the S1Pro for this Everse8. I have much more to learn though, I think, with the EQs for a microphone. Thanks for this video, but you have only scratched the surface; the speaker is meant for vocals and/or guitar and backing tracks from inputs 3/4. Just playing music, as in this video, will absolutely not help people decide! In fact, to me the S1Pro sounded better on this video! :)
I have owned the Bose S1 ever since they were introduced. It’s a great little speaker that I use for small gatherings at church for worship. I use it all the time to run my Spotify library through it. The only thing I don’t like is the slide switch for tone match. I think it sounds terrible with guitar and vocals. I also recently bought a EV Evolve 30 for regular church services. It sounds great too. I love both.
I've been using the Bose S1 Pro for over 3 years, almost exclusively as a ceremony and/or cocktail hour set-up. At the time, it was the closest thing to a total package for my needs (sound, convenience, portability). It has served me extremely well for those three years and I couldn't be more pleased with it. That said, a video like this is really (!) helpful for anyone who is looking to buy their first battery powered system or is adding to their inventory. For my needs and for how I use them, it would likely come down to price and availability. I don't think there's a wrong answer and, as Brian said, it's up to each of us to decide. I want the delicate expression of an acoustic guitar to be possible, but also have high output and a clear sound delivered to the audience. Which product is better?
I just bought the everse and I'm happy. The bose is easier to operate and has a nice polished sound. The Everse is louder, brighter and has stronger deeper bass. The everse provides phantom power on one input. The everse's most important advantage is the quality of the app that drives it. It's solid. Including auto adjusts for everything from bass guitar through speaking voice, 30 dynachord dsp effects, multiple graphic eqs and a powerful parametric eq. Most importantly you can name and save your settings and recall them as needed. In this product, they've teamed up with Bosch. It's a pro piece of gear.
The Everse 8 sounds better to me, deeper punching bass and a bit more airiness and fidelity (but also slightly harsh). The S1 Pro sounds great live already so this EV must sound even better live. Did you have a preference when you heard them side-by-side?
Hard to imagine anything sounding better than a bose in this category. I have 2 of them and often only use one because they sound so good. On the Bose connect, the only thing there is being able to connect 2 speakers together in either mono or stereo mode. I've never seen any other options such as power level remaining etc. That being said, I am open to the EV being it has all the bells and whistles that are handy, which I can't believe Bose has never added yet. Pretty pitiful on their behalf being that even the cheapest of speakers have all the bells and whistles already.
I like the Bose because it does NOT have all the bells and whistles... I greatly prefer knobs to touchscreens... AND it weighs less and is a little smaller..
@greendrinkguy1882 I do concur. I just got an ev 30m column array. It's pretty confusing. I imagine the ev8 would be the same. I find myself just using my old reliable bose s1s for peace of mind.

i want a bluetooth speaker with good sound quality. Which one is the best between those 2 speakers ? can we listen music with them at relatively low volume ? thanks
I own two Bose S1 Pro’s and I love the sound and coverage for acoustic guitar and vocals. The the controls are simple but limited. I like that he everse has better controls via an app BUT sometimes simple IS BETTER in a live gig! Just sayin’
I'm trying to decide between these two speakers. Just a suggestion for comparison. Use time slices in editing and jump back and forth, EQ both, and play music with acoustic instruments and vocals people will recognize the natural sound of.
Hi Brian, thanks for the demo, it's a pity you couldn't have run the EV's flat the same as the Bose without taking out the mid frequencies and using music mode as that adds more bass.
I did it that way because this video was shot in the studio in a very nearfield fashion. Horns on these types of speakers are not designed for nearfield listening, let alone nearfield recording on a camera like I have. So, I had to chill it out for the purpose of this video. It would be different if I had 20 - 30 feet to play with, but my little home studio just isn't that big.
Hey Brian great video. I don't own a Bose S-1. But side by side the EV win out sound wise as I can tell on the video . Would like to see a side by side on the JBL eon one compact speaker I do have a pair of those and like them like many other Dj's. I am a big owner of EV speakers from evolve 50's to ZLX 15's and 12's. Might add the EV- Everse 8 later on.
I feel the same way, I have used EV speakers for over 30years now & still to this day. I have 2 lines of EV passive speakers as well as the ZLX, ELX200 speakers. I love EV & I'm sure this little baby here is great & definitely will add to my collection.
Listened on my phone anD what I felt I heard was bose having more clarity while it seems the ev was grabbing more high frequencys and could get louder in high ends. Im still getting out of the bedroom so this was very informational. Thank you for all your tips and vids. They are very great.
The EV lost me when it used the screen for all controls. I use this for ceremonies and need knobs to control volumes and eqs quickly. Also, for outdoor events in the sun it can very challenging to see the screen on sunny days. I had that issue with the jbl one, trying to see levels in the sun was difficult. I just bought the yorkville mobile 8 and seems to be the winner for me between those 3. I haven't owned the bose.
Nice comparison. We'll have these 2 head to head, as well as the other battery powered speakers this year at Harvest of Sound. Battery powered speakers are getting big, so we figured it's time to do a battery powered shootout as well.

Nice video - thank you. I would like your opinion though, as, as you say, you have to be in the room to really judge, and you're the only one that was there. What's your preference?
Hello, I was about to buy a Bose S1, but seeing videos both of praise and some complaints about the lack of bass, I ended up opting for the everse 8, I already had the jbl eon one compact, and I returned it to the store in two days, the volume easily clipped, it was not possible to extract a loud sound, and I bought the ev because I already have an electro voice elx 20010p, and I went to the store to compare it, I liked the timbre of the everse 8 even though it was more expensive than the bose, it didn't have the bose to try in my city, I didn't regret it, the everse 8 has a good volume until it clips, and many features, I'm loving this box.
I've decided to purchase the ev8 but may decide to keep the Bose S1 as a second speaker to combine with the other one. You cannot compare the features that the EV has versus the Bose.
Bose S1 is the winner here, hear the Guitar on both , EV is a great company , I am using EV SX 300 for the last 20 years. Excellent . Passive speakers,
Took me awhile to find the feedback suppression. It’s marked AFS on/off in the settings. I have not tried it out yet. I’ll be using it at a wedding ceremony today
The Bose has much better clarity and sound quality imo. EV has more bass/low-end. As a singer/guitarist I prefer the Bose for these reasons. If I ever wanted more base I’d just get the Bose Sub that’s goes with the S1. I also prefer the smaller size of the Bose S1, that was the whole point of it. Being able to take it anywhere easily with it’s small footprint and just hooking it up to a bigger system when needed. But like I said, “this is coming from a musician” that go a S1 because of it’s sound quality to form-factor.
I thought the Bose had a much crisp in full sound over the EV as well from this video. But also Brian took 6db from the mid section, that is alot & to me why I think it sounded a bit muffled and muddy. I think if he had left it the straights about messing with the meds at all he would have had a lot more crisp full round sound.
Brian, I have been watching you for YEARS and your videos never disappoint. They are great, thoughtful and all around good stuff. You have proven that one does not need the fluff to make a good video. Have a great day bud. Keep it up. Btw, the EV is a great speaker but imo is overpriced and EV seems to know that as they are already doing price drops.
I have the S1 and use it for Korg keys and mic. the Tone Match is the little bit of genius which brings it all together. EV might sound a full on the Aux in perhaps, but its the clarity of the Bose that wins hands down for any live performer.
Thanks for doing this video. I love bose products. It's like if you don't own them, you can't tell type of thing with bose product. But let say i need this speakers for side fill, ceremony, small gathering, Dj monitor ... what else would you need this tiny speakers for lol? for me i see the versatility (Easy setup). For that reason Ev is the winner for me. For example, If you have two of the EV you can Bluetooth stereo pair them without any wire, plus the usb C for iPad/ phone charging and dc out for wireless receiver and finally the speaker mode. That's why i bought EV.
Bose you can hear all the frequencies very clean and distinct , impressive !!!! Other thing , the Bose have a bigger spread anlge sound !!!! Amazing !!!
EV has more bass, high extension also the clarity which super superior . Ps. Need to listen with headphone , as yesterday I listen Laptop speaker which can't get low FQ so bring EV not good , to day I have try again with my ref IEM wow I can feel EV much more better in overall . Thanks for comparison 👍👍👍
bose sounds more muddy and mellow in a strangely pleasant way, but the everse sounds more accurate and pro in a boring and a little fatiguing way. Each has their own perfect purpose I'm sure.
Thank you! I've been trying to say this forever. The bass coming from the bose is like almost fake. It sounds muddy and distorts very easily at higher volumes.
I go out as a little trio, our singer has the Bose S1 and our sax player the JBL EON One. The Bose and the EV sound quite different beasts I think the Bose is a 6.5" woofer and 3 small drivers maybe 2" on the top end. As a result I feel it's very good in the vocal region but it's going to suffer in the real low end, and the real high end which is what this video seems to demonstrate. The EV has a larger bass woofer and a proper 1" tweeter so it's a more conventional design and with the top end being titanium (I think) it's got a clear advantage. You mention the EV has a much higher max SPL but it probably doesn't state what frequency that is at, I suspect the tweeter probably can go very loud at certain frequencies so it's probably measured at 1-4kHz not 100-400Hz so much like power ratings it's probably a moot point. Nevertheless assuming it was an apples to apples comparison each time you want an additional 3dB of output you need to double the power. So the EV driven with 10w should be as loud as the Bose driven with 160w (as I say it's unlikely these figures are really meaningful as manufacturers skew this all the time). So I'd like to see a more apples to apples comparison between the EV and the JBL if you have access to one! I would also say that you can probably get the EV to sound really great with that much EQ available onboard
The Bose s1 with a sub sounds fantastic. Better in my opinion than the smallest L1. My evolve 30 sounds better than my pro 32 at similar volumes so I'd be anxious to hear what the everse sounds like.
They both sound great, but the Bose S1 Pro has a fuller sound, the Everse sounds a little hollow to me. This review is coming from a Bose S1 Pro owner.
I had there s1 pros after multiple failures with the batteries as far as supposed length of time for performance , maxing with recorded music only 3 hrs max at 75 per cent vol , I returned them twice and finally gave up and bought although a cheaper brand 4 Mackie thump gos and they run 4-5 hrs without even coming off of the battery green and sound great for the. money I will now add ev to the collection I have the rugged 30m also switched to ev after a Bose tower failure first gig with the new Bose l1 pro 8, I need durability and gear that will work just my experience
I appreciate your video on the 2 speakers. But I wish you would of played the EV straight without you cutting 6db off the mids. I know that's the way you like to play your music from other videos I have watched from you. But to me the Bose sounded more full sound & crisp & I think it's because you took so much of the mids out of the EV speaker. It would of been cool to do your adjustments but also just let the EV play as it is, just in music. Just my 2 cent. Thanks Brian :-)
Remember when I said this was the 2nd time I had shot that part of the video? Reason being is the first time, the camera mic couldn't reproduce the sound the EV was making, even at a -3db mid cut & a -3db gain cut. Sounds great in the studio, but it distorted the camera mic. So, I tried it the way you heard in the video where it was actually audible.
Very good demo. The EV has a slightly louder output and more features but the Boise is about $150 less and more user friendly and still has a good sound.
All the features that these speakers have have been available for a long time now, so its nothing new JBL brought out their model years ago very similar in features.
Listened to it on my 16" Macbook pro speakers. S1 sounds better. Clearer, better mid range and lower mids. EV sounds like a smiley eq curve. the midrange is sucked out and top end is quite glassy. but EV has more authority on the low end but a bit soupy as well. It could be the placement perhaps not sure. I have no doubt EV will sound louder.
I’ve got 2 S1pro and I’ve ordered 2 everse 8. I currently plan to keep both. What I love about Bose is that I never want to or feel the need to tweak the sound when listening to music through them. They sound fantastic and give real audiophile detail that you don’t hear on many systems. I do occasionally think they’re not powerful enough for live performances however. And as Brian points out in the other video, bose are great now at consumer audio which is where I lean with the S1 Pro. So the fact it has very few controls is it’s plus. Where as the EV had loads of control which I think will be it’s plus for live. I may change my mind once I have the EVs but that’s my current standing. Thanks for making the video 👍
Thanks for the review Brian. I’m considering purchasing the EV for the girls HS soccer team I coach. Would be great for practices or pregame warmups ⚽️👍🏽 🔊

@@borg386 Yep, and just wait til U get outside in the sun.. Those LED screens get even more annoying and hard to see in bright sunlight. Digital screens +touchscreens (or any music equipment that needs to be linked to a computer or a phone) is a horrific trend that needs to be reversed.
Thank you so much compare.
Can you also compare qsc cp8?
I can only do what I have access to
@@briansredd OK sir
EV just sounds more pleasant, detailed and smoother
You are wrong!! .. go back and listen from minute 11:12.and listen only to the snare drum coming out from both speakers, the Everse completely smashed the snare drum ,compare it to the snare drum 🥁 coming out from the bose is night and day ,.the bose sounded professionally flat on all frequencies. You can hear everything in detailed
i want a bluetooth speaker with good sound quality.
Just sayin’
EV 8 the best. Alie Sherlock uses an EV 8 .It has a built in Dynacord Pre amp and amplifier inside .
Hi Brian, do you feel they have 11dB soud pressure difference? I guess is EV will be only 1-2dB louder at most.
Could I power a MixStream pro off this speaker 🤔🤔
Thanks for this Brian, I’m a big Bose S1 pro fan. I have two! I wondered about the EV comparison on sound.
Whats the name of the song ?i want to play it on a different monitor
I have the JBL EON ONE and it’s ok but it hits the limit mark quick.
I'm trying to decide between these two speakers. Just a suggestion for comparison. Use time slices in editing and jump back and forth, EQ both, and play music with acoustic instruments and vocals people will recognize the natural sound of.
Bose s1pro 8:26 electrovoice 10:23
Seems the high frequencies are more accentuated on the EVs. Fuller sound. Hard to know for sure through YT
So if you had an ev you would run it flat all the time? It’s a pity the bose can’t put eq on their Bluetooth channel.
EKX and other wood cabinets are where EV really shines!
That ev is wicket! Tons of goodies and that USB-c is pretty sweet too.
Listened on my phone anD what I felt I heard was bose having more clarity while it seems the ev was grabbing more high frequencys and could get louder in high ends. Im still getting out of the bedroom so this was very informational. Thank you for all your tips and vids. They are very great.
which one is best for vocals?
The EV lost me when it used the screen for all controls. I use this for ceremonies and need knobs to control volumes and eqs quickly. Also, for outdoor events in the sun it can very challenging to see the screen on sunny days. I had that issue with the jbl one, trying to see levels in the sun was difficult. I just bought the yorkville mobile 8 and seems to be the winner for me between those 3. I haven't owned the bose.
I've owned the bose. You've done well with the yorkville. It blows the bose away.
I agree , screen is a deal breaker. I play music and don't want to be a sound engineer.
Amen. PHYSICAL KNOBS are SO much better than touch screens...
Nice comparison. We'll have these 2 head to head, as well as the other battery powered speakers this year at Harvest of Sound. Battery powered speakers are getting big, so we figured it's time to do a battery powered shootout as well.
Outdoor test, max volume before clipping, measured with an SPL meter? Frequency response with an RTA? Just throwing out a wish list. 😁
@@PURESOUND4 indoors, in a 5500sqft ballroom. Peak volume at just clipping using pink noise, and on and off axis frequency response using an rta mic and smarrt
@@littlecncshop That's what I'm talking about! 👍
What was the result?
@@AndrewBanker1 the ev absolutely slayed the bose. Wasn't even close.
Thx Brian. Great comparison and reliable information.
Can you connect an EV sub to the EV speaker?
Loved the EV over the Bose!!
Well, yea of course you can do that with any setup.
Yup, the EV even has a HPF option
@@tyronenelson9124 I know that, but my sub has Bluetooth and so does this speaker. So I wanted to make sure they will sync together.
@@MrDJMikieMike Yes as long as the speaker that you have connected a device to acts as a master for the sub.
@@tyronenelson9124 my sub is the EV ELX200 SP, and it will sync right with this speaker.
Thank You. I will buy Everse8, my first battery powered speaker. EV is my sound company of choice, so I am very happy that they have finally battery speaker to offer. Nice video 😉👌🏻
The Ev has delay built in for no stadium sounding latency
Lots of folks don’t realize that dB rating is on a logarithmic scale, not linear. 12 dB difference is a LOT.
10db is twice as loud. For example, 80db is twice as loud as 70db.
Nice video - thank you. I would like your opinion though, as, as you say, you have to be in the room to really judge, and you're the only one that was there. What's your preference?
I have both. For Ceremonys, Bose, because of array. Also, two separate knobs makes a better mixer.
But Everse is a great speaker
Excellent . Passive speakers,
Excellent comparison, and 💯 for the transparency. We need more of this!
Thank you!
@@andrearisr2593 Your could be right.
I think the Bose is still better though, considering it’s price, portability and overall sound quality.
On their higher tier speakers, they are actually a real good value compared to other premium offerings.
I have the S1 and use it for Korg keys and mic. the Tone Match is the little bit of genius which brings it all together. EV might sound a full on the Aux in perhaps, but its the clarity of the Bose that wins hands down for any live performer.
How much do they cost
Thanks for doing this video. I love bose products. It's like if you don't own them, you can't tell type of thing with bose product. But let say i need this speakers for side fill, ceremony, small gathering, Dj monitor ... what else would you need this tiny speakers for lol? for me i see the versatility (Easy setup). For that reason Ev is the winner for me. For example, If you have two of the EV you can Bluetooth stereo pair them without any wire, plus the usb C for iPad/ phone charging and dc out for wireless receiver and finally the speaker mode. That's why i bought EV.
I wish they would have made these like the PMX series!
Bose you can hear all the frequencies very clean and distinct , impressive !!!! Other thing , the Bose have a bigger spread anlge sound !!!! Amazing !!!
Thank you, I think I've made up my mind Brian. Excellent video.
Scam careful
bose sounds more muddy and mellow in a strangely pleasant way, but the everse sounds more accurate and pro in a boring and a little fatiguing way. Each has their own perfect purpose I'm sure.
Thank you! I've been trying to say this forever. The bass coming from the bose is like almost fake. It sounds muddy and distorts very easily at higher volumes.
Ty Brian for info through your demo !
S1 plus sub woofer. Winner
not ev sound better with subwoofer
That 12db difference is HUGE
Pretty sure they both sound better than my old Carvin Stagemate!
They both sound great, but the Bose S1 Pro has a fuller sound, the Everse sounds a little hollow to me. This review is coming from a Bose S1 Pro owner.
In my opinion EV sounded better! much more options to mix, also more powerful, I have EV 30m with app we can do miracles! Haha
Everse louder than the Maui 5?
Another option is YORKVILLE EXM MOBILE 8 and EXM MOBILE SUB (battery powered or ac powered)
thats the video i actualy wannt to see
I have the s1 as a home speaker. It meets all my needs
Both are great. Get the one that makes you play Rock Lobster, smile and dance.
Very good demo. The EV has a slightly louder output and more features but the Boise is about $150 less and more user friendly and still has a good sound.
You need to check out the Mackie Thump Go 10. I sold my S1 so fast....
All the features that these speakers have have been available for a long time now, so its nothing new JBL brought out their model years ago very similar in features.
Mucho mejor sonifo everse8
Everse 8 9:43
Bose S1 Pro 7:43
If you listen with Ear phone, EV way better, thanks for the review
Pretty kool!! Thanks for sharing!!
sound quality? bose
EV sounded better to me. As a musician I will go with the EV hands down.
He said he -6db the mids on the EV; that’s why it sounds like a smiley. -6db reduction is huge
Thank you so much for doing this!
Pon la Everse modo club que es donde puedes tener más graves
Cool nice video. I like the comparisson
Thanks for making the video 👍
please i wan´t to read your opinion now
Now that youve tried both, which one do you prefer? Im having a hard time choosing, im a musician tried bose once and its awesome...
Now you have both which one do you prefer?
Compare with HK MOVE 8
I don't know how this is going to come out but I got to hand it to the EV I think it's got a better sound
They both sound good. I got the JBL Compact 2 years ago and absolutely love it.
Thanks for the review Brian. I’m considering purchasing the EV for the girls HS soccer team I coach. Would be great for practices or pregame warmups ⚽️👍🏽 🔊
