Although you're 7 years older, you remind me of my son in law. He is an Engineer and tends to overthink EVERYTHING to the point of madness, and will inevitably end up with his original plan or vision in the end.

@10:08 can i suggest not joining cables with two males to two females, but a male and female on each cable so its not possible to get them the wrong way around. also on the cable bringing power to the joint to put the female (insulated!) terminal on the ''hot'' positive side to lessen the chance of shorts if it comes out, i know your on a wood surface not metal but its 'best practice' to work that way, love the van and vids, thanks for them
edit: ahhhhhh now i've watched to the end you have got insulated ones!

Nice work, David. I would suggest putting some felt under that bottom drawer to protect the wood "floor". Also, maybe put the hinge on the bottom rather than the top of that door. This way it's not flopping on your hands whenever you go into it for something.

Just a tip on terminating your wiring. Use one male and one female connector, with the reverse on the other side. Not 2 male, and 2 female on other side. That will prevent possible reverse polarity connections.

If you want to try and hide the locks on the drawers, you might want to look at child proof drawer locks. Some of them can fit completely in the drawer so you can't see it from outside. (it does add an extra step when opening them though). And they are usually easy enough to install.

Well done. Exhausting to the brain indeed. I have a suggestion on that bottom drawer. My grandfather, which was a carpenter, would put felt on the underside on the drawers. That away it will not scratch your other countertop.
Just an idea. It's your built you do w/it as YOU WISH. Your the one who has to live w/it.
Love the way you talk to us/the camera as if we was sitting beside you. I so much want to jump through the screen & give you a helping hand by holding anything you wish. My Dad made me do that my whole life up until his death in 2007. Oh how my arms over my head would ache for days later. I got where I hated to help him w/anything he was doing.
But it would be different w/you, bc it would be a one time deal.....

wood on wood friction can be ameliorated by rubbing surfaces with a candle. There are lots of latches that push to shut [and stay shut] then push to open with no handles needed- they have a little spring loading and can be mechanical or magnetic. avoids the need for separate turnbuttons or bungees etc

It's probably a little late now for your project but if you need to do this sort of thing in the future either in your Van or on your boat, do a search for "ticking stick" or "joggle stick" . It's an old boat builder's method for lifting and transferring odd shapes like you have there and putting them onto a piece of wood as a pattern. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos muchly.

As my old wood shop teacher once said "Measure 6 times" Then cut and if your still not sure, build a mock up out of cardboard. Also, nice work on the drawers. I don't know if you'd like thi s ides, but the simplest way to keep them closed is to drill a small hole in the left side, through the side and drawer and use a bit of dowel, with a fancy knob on it. Should do the trick nicely.

Hi David, glad to see that you’re still going and doing a great job. I have now finished my van and used neodinium magnets to stop the drawers coming out. On one set of drawers, I put one magnet into the bottom of the drawer, on the outside at the front and in the middle. I then put another one in the shelf that the drawer slides on, obviously making sure that the two line up properly. I then glued them both in with araldite. On the other set of drawers, I fixed a strip of wood at the back of the shelf that the drawer slides on. I made it out of 9mm plywood and about 25mm high by about 80% of the width of the shelf. I put the other magnet into the back of the drawer so that they both lined up. I used 12mm x 3mm magnets on the first set and 15mm x 3 mm on the second set, although your drawers are bigger than mine, so if you want to do it like this, I would use 20mm diameter. On a different note, and it’s just a thought, keep an eye on the weight. You don’t want to go over the gross vehicle weight (GVW) or maximum allowable mass (MAM), whichever designation you want to use. It’s very easy to do that and can have horrible implications if you should have a crash (hopefully not, but you never know). If you decide to get it weighed, remember to allow for the driver and fuel etc, and leave a bit spare as a buffer. Keep a copy of the weigh bridge certificate as proof.

I am very impressed with the drawers and the rear cutouts. You could put a simple turnbuckle between the draws in the middle to stop them opening while driving. The cabinet makers of yore would have lubricated wooden runners with beeswax. Those connectors might have been better with heat-shrink sleeving rather than remaking them but I appreciate this is way too late. Sleeving strengthens the crimp and makes pulling apart easier.

You might consider dry graphite lubricant on those drawer bottoms and inside cabinetry since you didn't opt to use runners. This approach can last quite a long time on wood if you don't mind the discolouration inside the cabinetry and on the drawers which you would hardly see, I suspect.

Bungee cords will work well to hold the drawers in place while driving.
For the top space consider some elastic cargo holder e.g., on the back of some car seats.
For the space with the flip front, consider making this open down with a stop, then it can be used to rest things while you search for other things. A magnet latch should hold this closed. Used on cabinets.
I can appreciate the frustration of having to re-do all this work. Often we need to use a design in order to find out which aspects of the design work well and which do not work well.
    Dave.

A tip for your next van David, you can buy the plywood liners all pre cut for most vans on the internet & they do not cost a lot.

Hi. Cheers. I re-used the ones that came with the van (except the floor which I wanted re-cut)

If you had been closer l would have popped over & lent you my cordless tools (but l am in Nottingham).
I felt your pain manually unscrewing that ceiling 😵.
I planned on a boat for my retirement. And have watched most, if not all, of you boating uploads. I have owned many boats in my younger days.
However, one heart attack later l had to reconsider the boat plan. Perhaps going through a line of locks solo may not be the best plan. I done that in a foot of snow in the 80s. But l was much younger then.
So a couple of months ago l went for plan B. And now have a motorhome parked outside. Now there is much to do. I will start with fitting solar panels & diesel heater. I already bought 4 x 120ah AGM batteries & a victron control panel. I have a city & guilds in electronics so the electrical work will be a walk in the park.
I have now subscribed to your camper channel. I subscribed to your boating Chanel when you bought your boat a few years ago.

How about attaching a sheet of plastic to the bottom of that bottom drawer to protect the surface below. I am thinking of the thick plastic sheeting builders use to protect floors. Its hard wearing not too thick and very slippy.

@@Vandemonium I use UHMW Tape on the base of my circular saw. It makes it glide and not scratch the surface I am cutting. Unfortunately it has another name "millionaires tape" because of how much it costs. You only need a tiny bit.

Old chests did have runners. They did wear a bit. I am enjoying this channel, as you search out your way with the narrowboat channel. By the end of this VLOG: you need a few days back on the narrowboat, mate!

I'm delighted that A you've new van video, and B a good chunk of your subscribers are so loyal!
I am intruded as to how you position your van / narrowboat - I imagine long walks / runs / bike rides at the end of each day so you're never without access to either! (I presume thats not the case and actually like Slim Potatohead doesn't tell us his real name I'm actually not wanting you to answer the question!)

I don't try to keep the van with me, I just go to get it when I moor for any extended period such as over winter. Otherwise it stays in secure storage.

4:40 I'd put the hinges on the left hand end - then it won't be wanting to flop down on you while accessing the space and, depending on how it fits with the van doors, perhaps a magnet on it will hold it open. Think 'one handed' such that you don't need 2 hands to get something out of that space.
    # I note it's window height - so maybe a ball-mounted window sucker to stick the door in the open position onto the glass.
