- This is Part 1 of 2 of a weekend trip I took to Retford in Nottinghamshire, purely for the fun of some time away in the van. Includes a tour of the campsite and me making a cheese sandwich.

Sorry if this was already asked. What kind of cheese???
Cheddar. I showed it!! And there's a link in the video description 🤣
@@Vandemonium I am not making any excuses for anyone not seeing that. But perhaps part of the disconnect here is that most Cheddar Cheese in stores in the States is dyed to a pale orange color. Kind of like seeing a white tiger, just a little bit less dangerous....
Pilgrim's Choice Extra Mature Cheddar, other cheddars are available.
@@thomasfrench2012a little late to the conversation, but if you can order cheese online, there's quite a few good, small cheese mongers in Wisconsin that will ship. Many of their white cheddars are very similar to the ones I found when living in Europe.
Ok I should’ve read some comments. Cheddar is my favorite.
As a Wisconsin native I shall give you the perfect cheese sandwich recipe
1, cheese
2, make sure it’s good cheese
3, the rest is just details, so whatever you want
I’m am adding an edit to this because of my Step 2 comment (Steven Wallis fans please refrain)
Good Cheese….
In the movie that thing you do Spartacus asks the Bellhop where he can find “Good Jazz”
I like to think that somewhere in Wisconsin, there is a bell hop at a hotel who can tell you were to get the “Good Cheese” but he only tells those who can tell him answers to trivia from the 1973 book Choose Your Cheese
If we play the driving bits at half speed, it's like a cruising video... without the ducks. ;)
Would like to follow you in your new home project as well, David. A lot of projects around the house. A lovely little camper you have.
Please - many more like this. Laugh out loud funny, comforting and calming all at the same time. Your videos should be prescribed on the NHS :0) Maybe we could see you moving into your new house?
I doubt I’ll do specific house videos as they wouldn’t fit either the campervan or boat channel, but bits of the house will inevitably end up on camera, I suspect. For example, the one I’m trying to buy has a garage which I will use as a workshop, so it’ll show up on this channel when I do DIY
This is the kind of content we come here for.
Bring on part two.
:-)
That episode was almost too exciting for me! ;)
I'm quite exhausted by all that excitement.
I can quite imagine. Time for a nap.
The pursuit of gastronomic excellence brought me here!
Spoiler alert: you’re in the wrong place 🤣🤣
All is right. David has posted.
Thank you David.
Well I never thought I would see the day! Exposing the recipe for the cheese sandwich is like revealing the recipe of Betty’s hotpot. I need a brew to get over the shock.
Finally, after all these years, you and the rest of the family can travel on the same jet without fear of the recipe being lost for eternity should there be a crash. I must admit it's not quite the Colonel's secret blend of 11 herbs and spices but I was pleased to see your choice of cheese matching our favourite too. Nice little camp site. Can't wait for part two. What about your recipe for beans on toast? Or have I gone too far? As Dougal would have said, "Too much too soon Ted". Take care matey. 🙂
Spot of Branston wouldn't go amiss, there. Mind you, I bung slices of raw onion on my mature cheddar - livens it up no end. Yep, I'm single 🙂
I don’t mind a bit of pickle but don’t go through it fast enough so it gets wasted
@@Vandemonium - Branston (and other pickles) don't go off, that's the whole point of pickling the contents!
I love a slice of raw onion... almost by itself. But on cream cheese and lox on an onion bagel? Heaven! (I am also single with onion breath. LOL)
A cheese sandwich AND an afternoon nap. You spoil us, Mr. Johns. May you have an excellent Eostre.
You nicked that recipe from me…you’ll be hearing from my lawyers.
If my marmalade on toast recipe is revealed, I won’t be responsible for my own actions.
Don’t say you’ve not been warned. 💀
Lovely!!! The infamous cheese sandwich has followed along with you from sea to land!!
That entrance to the campsite was so well camouflaged! No wonder you missed it. The country roads are very pretty but I'd be so stressed out trying to find a place for a u turn
It’s time to add some crisps into that cheese sandwich…
At last! The great mystery of the turophilic world is revealed! The 'recipe' for the Cruising Cheese Classic stuns an astonished fan-base.....seriously, though, I like that you have shown us the famous sandwich (vanwich?) at last. I hope that you try local cheeses during your travels, although I would not recommend Sage Derby in a sarnie. As they say 'your mileage may vary'. I - personally - am suffering from severe Granary Bread withdrawal symptoms over here in the USA, and supplies of Branston Pickle are running low. I do so hope that you get the chance to visit the Bassetlaw Museum - they have the remains of a an Anglo-Saxon log boat! (A sort of pre-narrowboat, narrowboat) Take care!
Excellent vlog as usual with the bonus of the famed cheese sandwich recipe! Glad you enjoyed your first day
Beautiful camp ground, best neigh...bours ever. Very enjoyable, thank you. Cheers.
I really think you should come to the U.S. and rent a camper van and do a tour of the U.S. southwest. It's a bit different from your usual haunts. You're a great story teller and there are many stories and excellent free camp sites in the region for you to experience and share.
One day I'd love to
Agree!
Nice little soujourn. I hope the horse emissions weren't too offputting. ;-)
I used to have a trick of using residual engine heat to warm water for a shower on trips. After driving to my destination, I'd turn the engine off and place a couple plastic jugs of water next to the engine to heat up for a half hour or so. Similarly, my dad said when he was in the national guard, he'd warm up canned beans by driving one mile with the can next to the engine manifold. Someone saw him and tried it, but drove more than one mile and ended up with exploded beans all over the engine.
April brings the sweet spring showers... on and on for hours and hours.
Always best to depress the button on the handbrake lever when applying it, or so I was always taught 😉
You detail the simple pleasures very well. Thanks, David. 😁👍
You have the correct recipe for a cheese sandwich, including a few cucumber slices now and then. As always, I'm smiling when I finish your vlogs, thank you for brightening my day.
I've bookmarked this video, just in case I need to refer to it when I make my own cheese sandwich sometime
Wise
Wonderful David. You've no idea how entertaining and relaxing your channels are to watch. I'm sure you could stretch to another channel showing house DIY and renovations. Think of all that YT adsense revenue!
Haha I think I've got enough to be getting on with!
I love those campsites where everything is rough and ready but spick and span. That’s my kind of campervan cooking! Thanks for sharing.
A wonderful relaxing video, much needed in today's world. Thank you
I've de-winterized my van, and I've been meaning to get my camping season underway, alas, work keep taking up my time. Ah well, soon, I hope.
All these years I’ve been making cheese sandwiches and now I found out there's actually a recipe? You and I could have an interesting chat about TEA!
Ahhhhhhh...........so that is the secret.........I kept putting the cheese on the outside. Thanks for clearing that up. Nice vid.
The perfect little camping trip.
That was a lovely campground, with very considerate hosts.
The horses were a bonus.
Thanks for taking us along.
Happy Camping
Glad you enjoyed it
Having just started Riding for the Disabled, on a wonderful Welsh Cob, I must say it is really great to back on the back of these wonderful friends. Dogs, horses and humans, civilisation wouldn't exist today without that Triune working together.
My daughter walked in while I was watching this and expressed surprise at the need for a cheese sandwich recipe :-) Nice to see you on your travels again.
Ha!!!
I agree with the proper shade of tea
I am very grateful for your cheese sandwich 🥪 recipe and the laugh that took over me while realizing that I also found your snooze fascinating.
As always a delightful video that made me laugh in parts, stopped me working in my allotment shed, and also made me hungry. Good to see you looking well David.
That Pitchup site looks very handy. Hope you had a nice break. I prefer my cheese sandwich with onion rather than cucumber. Cucumber always repeats on me.
Ah the classic "Oh bollocks" when you miss a turning, I do love British motoring vocabulary sometimes
Simple but brilliant. That's the campsite and sandwich, not you David:-).
Ha, that's arguable!!
Don't tell my overlanding RUclipsr friends I'm watching some guy in the UK camping in a 2WD van in farmlands instead of their offroad backcountry adventure videos, LOL. Been there, done that. This, however...this is a whole new world and very much enjoying getting a peek into it. :-)
Hahaha I'll try to find some offroad sites one day 🤣🤣
David, the best part of your sandwich has to be the delectable English cheese. I've visited often enough to develop an appreciation for the English cheese artistry. Nice video - looks like a great place to stay.
The Long Awaited Cheese Sandwich recipe. Good to see you again David. Pleasant weekend. We're having this horrid spring weather over here in the US too. I did see tho on the news today (April 16) that you were experiencing very, very warm weather. Enjoy it while (when) you can. Take care and stay safe.
Yes, it's been gloriously sunny, very unusual for the Easter holiday when it normally rains solidly 🤣
I'm tingling with anticipation for part 2 David, thanks!
Cozy! Us introverts do like the solitary outings.
Fair play for the use of the crust!
If I remember correctly you once made a cheese toastie on Cruising the Cut. I think the video was called "A day in the life during lockdown". You must be pleased that your boat was so easy to sell. Enjoy your new house when you get one even if you won't do a walk through for your fans. Best of wishes to you David.
I have been away from England for to long, I forgot what a good British Cheese Butty looks like and with a very dark mug of tea.
Great to see you getting away for a weekend in the campervan. Looking forward to part two. Something tells me Gordon Ramsey doesn't have to worry lol.
I was surprised the spoon wasn't standing unsupported in that tea!
April in Alberta has been a week of -10 and snow showers. Better than a couple of provinces over though, which had a full winter storm.
Looks like a nice relaxing place to spend a weekend.
Seeing 3 slices of bread I thought you were going to take it up a notch and have a cheese club sandwich.
Thanks for the recipe though, I must try it. A tad disappointed that you never wrote the recipe ‘in the description box below’!
Enjoy your weekend and happy Easter
That camping site is really well set up, the shower facilities sure beat your shower tent… 🤭
Looking forward to part 2 and, as I commented on one of your other videos quite some time ago, “you had me at cheese sandwich”. Yum!
Thanks to you, David, my English tea has become a favorite nighttime drink. And now I get to try that famous cheese sandwich recipe. Your videos are the best!
Love the badger design stain-glassed windows on the showers!
I came for the cheese sandwich recipe and ended up laughing throughout the entire video! Very entertaining! We were sad to see you’d sold the boat but wish you all the best in your new venture on land ☺️
Very amusing. I envy you. What more do you need than that. A nice change..
Watched your 'show reel of 2014. You were great......so why did you ' retire from tv'.?
Your calm and descriptive wording is admiral.. Perhaps that is why watching/listening to you is worth our time. As a child, I used to ha n g with my Dad, under a car, or rebuilding a brokensomething or another, gardening or whatever s fever his task was. I learned about tools, plants, plumbing from those 'shadowing' times with my Dad, who could fix anything...and not JUST WITH DUCT TAPE !! Carry on, David...
I got fed up with doing the same local news stories year in, year out!
Had to laugh when the hail started. I believe the climate in western Washington, US is very similar. I've gad hail every day for the last three says interrupted by sunshine. 😁
When I have a cheese sandwich I always think of you!
🤣
Wow, you are really spilling all your secrets!
I believe, Pantone 174C is the correct colour swatch for that tea - for the benefit of your N. American viewers. More commonly know as Builders Brew.
That looks like a lovely and relaxing day. Thank you for sharing your cheese sandwich recipe David and looking forward to part two.
All these years and I never knew I was making a cheese sandwich all wrong!
:-))))
You allways manage to put a smile on my dial, thank you for another great glimpse and yum to your cheese sandwich recipe, my personal fav too
Outstanding, in this field. Thank you David.
All of your videos are simultaneously funny and relaxing, and they are just what my mind needs after a long work day. Best wishes and prayers for your new home on land.
Anchor Butter spotted….great choice. Cheers from NZ.
Fun story for you Alistair.
When I was a child my mother always bought anchor butter. She said that the UK joining the ‘common market’ as the EU was then known was very unfair to New Zealand farmers so she was doing her part in supporting them.
Yipeeeeee David is back with his wonderful sense of humor.
The horse in the blanket is sooo cute my heart cant take it
Cracking cheese Gromitt!
This little camp site is a true diamond in the rough. Good find David.
A cheese sandwich without pickle? bro, you're a sandwich gangsta.
So nice to see you again David😊 April in England looks very much like April in Ohio!
Came here from Cruising the Cut, and no surprise, this is just as entertaining. Watching you video rolling down the road made me think that a motorway is just a paved canal, and a campervan is just a short narrowboat on wheels, which makes this count as a cruising vlog. I also think rain is wet, but what do I know...I'm just a silly American :) Anyway, I'm now subscribed to this and Cruising the Cut. Keep up the good work!
Hahaha thank you and welcome along
Hello. What an amazing good campsite. I have a long history of camping out. I am very impressed with this one.
Ah, I spent 10 years comuting up and down the M69. And the sound of hail in a car roof - ASMR.
Marvellous and that afternoon sleep in a campervan sounds like the perfect way to spend an afternoon. I like the beer keg urinal..... started out as P#$$ (expletives removed) and finished as P :-)
I wondered why I was getting a cheese sandwich video suggestion. Only took seconds to figure out this is “cruising the motorway” … well done.
Hey … it just occurred to me that in the canals you will be you seem to “drive” on the right … I think.
Love your videos David!!!!
EY up David, there's nothing like a cheese butty, heaven! Try canned ravioli I think it's a little bit nicer than the spaghetti. Nice camping spot as well.
I was eating my favorite version of a cheese sandwich yesterday, Boarshead thinly sliced yellow American with mayo on rye, and found myself wondering how you made your famous cheese sandwich. And then today, here is your recipe. I'll try it. I think the internet can read our minds! Hoping you'll be enjoying your future land journeys. Good luck.
Thought the much awaited cheese sandwich recipe was a laugh, nice camp site, and another excellent little video as usual
No wonder you where not wanting to eat in the evening , after that Slab of Cheese and half a Loaf of bread. Looking forward to ,Part 2 ‘ . Any more Cheese delights?
Looks like a relaxing weekend!...even with the tiny hail.
It was!
Thank you thank you thank you
I checked out the web site found one in area of Derby so I can check out all the festivals in November and of course the Cops.
Thank you so much
Nice little site - reasonable amenities and stuff for a smaller business. Am feeling a bit silly, I was putting the cheese under the bread - thanks for the tip.
D'oh!
That spaghetti wasn't too bad on buttered toast, or so I thought as a child. ☺
You booked 3 nights starting 22nd and I am watching this on the 16th. Wierd and Sunny now also, no hail.
I was re-creating the booking process for the video and the site wouldn’t let me pick dates gone past!
Nowt better than a builders brew off tea, supported by a hefty cheese sarnie, with the rain and hailstone scattering the wildlife. Bliss, shear bliss.
Looks very pleasant. I'll never get used to the UK sandwiches with butter on everything lol. Just mayo or mustard for me on the occasional sandwich. Butter on the outside for a toasted cheese. Bit at camp I'll just use tortillas and melt the cheese inside for a quesadilla. To each there own.😉
No butter in a sandwich? Is it even really a sandwich? 🤣
@@Vandemonium Yeah, here in America, we don't butter our sandwiches. Mayo all the way.
@@Vandemonium Butter just seems weird. Then again I had a sandwich of Mayo, pepperoni, and velveeta for lunch.
Well, the cheese HAS to be a good sharp aged cheddar. Ironically this was my favorite until I found, early on, that it was a migraine trigger for me! Damnation! Why couldn't it have been Brussels Sprouts or creamed corn (ulp!)? There are a myriad of other cheeses so Danish Blue or Gruyere will have to do. Odd that Parmigiana or Pecorino Romano can be much sharper (even a good Danish Blue) but none of them give me any problem at all. The weirdest thing is that goat or sheep milk cheddar is NOT a trigger. So many types of cheese and so little time... I sound like Wallace from "Wallace and Gromit"!
But goats cheese is 🤮
Are you from a country or buying from a company that adds annatto to cheddar to make it more on the orangey side? If so, could that be the trigger? Just an optimistic thought. Unfortunately aged cheeses are on the list of possible food triggers. I’d be devastated if I had to give up cheese (or chocolate).
Sounds lovely. Hail in April in Britain is pretty mild compared to the baseball-sized hail in Arkansas. Stay safe and well as you move toward home ownership.
finally the compact camper van chef !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
. Look forward to more of your camping vlogs. Nice to see the different camp sites and countryside.
I really love your grand culinary skills! Thanks for presenting them to us!
David, was it a natural ability in front of camera, that got you working on TV, or was it the job that taught you the skills? I realise there has to be a bit of both, but what situation was more predominant?
Not having lived in the area covered by your broadcasts, I never saw you on TV, but I can imagine you were a favourite with the viewers. It wouldn't surprise me if you had a few "and finally..." moments 😁
Anyway, just wanted to say, keep up the quality vlogs. As someone else has already said, some good lol moments and a certain calm, they're always worth watching 👍
Thank you. Honestly, I didn’t learn anything about presentation during my time in TV (in terms of being comfortable with it), I just was always at ease whether behind a mic on radio or on camera. Oh, and if you fancy a giggle, see ruclips.net/video/ZKkH8z6WxjY/видео.html
@@Vandemonium Thank you for sharing that David!! I have to agree, you ARE a natural in front of the camera!!
@@Vandemonium that was a very enjoyable 3:38 minutes!
I really enjoy your weekend getaways. You neglected to mention what kind of cheese you used on your sandwich. It did look delicious. That kind of cheese sandwich is uncommon in the United states, at least any place I've lived. We almost always toast them, and cheddar or Colby or provolone are popular choices. Adding bacon and lettuce and tomatoes or some really smoky brisket are also popular additions.
The cheese was shown! And it’s in the video description 😀
Right you are! I am part of the Velveeta toasted cheese crowd. I save the English cheddar for apples or for Mac-n-cheese!
@@Vandemonium oh, I'm so sorry, yes I did see the cheese but I could not tell what kind it was. And I just had cataract surgery last Tuesday so at this point I cannot see through the operated on eye OR the remaining eye, neither one of them is working very well. But it didn't even occur to me to look in the description, which I will do right now, and I'm sure my phone can make the text big enough for me to easily read. Thank you!
@NMR my sister recently had cataract surgery, it's transformed her vision! Good luck with the post-op recovery
@@Vandemonium , thank you. The first week has been interesting because I can't really see out of either eye! And my little dog doesn't understand the seeing eye dog concept...
Such uncanny humor, most enjoyable. Thank you for making me laugh. Be safe and take care Maranatha
