Another aspect you may not have considered is they represent two different forms of masculinity. Gale is traditionally masculine (even a bit toxic) and Peeta represents a more unconventional, positive form of masculinity. He’s kind, empathetic & introspective guy who delights in baking and decorating cakes. However, that doesn’t mean he’s not physically powerful and his instinct toward Katniss is immediately to protect her like a traditional male protagonist would. I’ve always appreciated his character, we need more Peetas in our media.

Okay, so I kinda need to disagree with this. Gale and Katniss come from the absolute bottom of district twelve all they know is surviving and killing to survive. Peta comes from the more privileged side of District 12 which isn't a massive upgrade but it is noticeable. Gales' masculinity is directly formed around his need to survive and thus shaping his emotions toward killing and death as such, we can see this in Katniss too. Peta on the other hand never in his childhood dealt with killing and death in the same animalistic way Gale and Katniss have because he didn't have to Gale and Katniss needed to. Comparing Gales and peta's masculinity without taking into consideration what each individual experienced isn't at all fair. And Peta is a bit toxic too if we were to put the movies portal of him into consideration. Treating Katniss badly after finding out she didn't like him (yet) after everything they went because she decided to play with the lie he said to the Capitol isn't exactly healthy. But that's just my perspective. And to add a bit more imagine a liners scare going left to right. Katniss is on the fare left of the scale now is in the far right I imagine take would be some where in the middle. Eging a bit more towards katniss

thirty_ish8651 totally agree. Gale kinda forces Katniss to love him, making her feel guilty so she can love him which ends up she kissing Gale to ease him. Peeta, in contrast, after realizing Katniss does not truly love him, he stepped back and makes friends with her, learns how to know her (at first, Peeta feels disappoint and avoids Katniss, then he realizes he treated her bad so he apologized).

They are BOTH "traditionally" masculine characters, though. Gale is, maybe, less mature, I suppose. They are meant to represent different sides to a rebellion and what people are willing to, and not willing to, sacrifice in the name of good.

I think Gale fit into Katniss's life best when they were living in 12, pre Hunger Games. When life was simple, because survival was the only thing they had to think about.
But when Katniss's life got complicated due to the rebellion, she finds put that Peeta, who did not need to focus on surviving as much and therefore developed a stronger sense of who he was and how he'd do things (like how when he says he wants to show the Capitol he is more than a piece in their games), is who she needs to be with to heal.
Not to say Gale is dumber than Peeta, no not at all. But he never really had the chance to see beyond surviving and keeping his family alive. And who put him in that position? The Capitol. So he gets angry and stays in the mindset that the ends justify the means if the Capitol falls.
This is never the person Katniss would be with. Peeta was always the one she needed.

I agree with you. I DO think that Gale and Peeta are opposite sides of the same coin...with Gale being fire and representing war and Peeta being water and wanting only peace. I think that is why Katniss ultimately chooses Peeta in the end. She is the Girl on Fire. She's brave and noble and she became the Mockingjay. But she has also been BURNED by that same fire. It shattered her, physically and emotionally, by she is physically and emotionally shattered by the loss of her father and how she had to fight for her family's survival, she's shattered again by the loss of Peeta and destruction of her home, after the second Games....by her growing concern for Peeta as she witnesses his suffering at the hands of Snow....and then ultimately by Prim's death at the hands of Coin. And, as she told Gale, she would always wonder if it was HIS trap that ultimately killed Prim. He was the fire and represented war and pain and death. Peeta gave her bread in a moment when she was starving. He was there to comfort and protect her when she was having the nightmares. He gave her the pearl and the locket that had her family in it. And he was the one to put her heart back together, in the end, when she lost Prim and returned to District 12 alone. He gave her the peace that she so desperately needed. And I notice that Katniss wears the softest and lightest shade of yellow for Peeta. At the end of the first movie, when she's confessing her love for Peeta to Caesar, she's wearing the soft, yellow dress and her hair is down. At the very end, she's wearing a soft yellow dress again, when they are playing in the field with her children...but the yellow has been marred by grey, showing that she's been touched by the fire, but she's survived.

It was was barely about the games for me (though I love the excitement the games bring and the story of the rebellion.) but always always always the story has been about Katniss and her yearning for a better life for specifically her sister Prim. Love your take, the movies didn’t do much justice to the Peeta and Katniss love story as you don’t hear her internal thoughts but since book one if you read it carefully Katniss always had a special place for Peeta, 'the boy with the bread' in her heart after he saved her, she kept that to herself, never telling Gale or her family about Peeta, not until the Games when she had no choice but to confess in front of the cameras and that made her much more confuse as her connection with Gale was scattered and with her new role in rebellion and Snow threatening her she was cautious now more than ever
Snow knows she loved Peeta even if she didn’t know herself, that's why to me book two hit closest because there in the quell Peeta knows one of them had to live and there Katniss show all her feelings for Peeta till the very end even after she was rescued.
Also i like to add Peeta and Katniss both suffered a lot, and they experience the Games, something Gale could only imagine. They experience what it's like to be an enemy of Snow and to be tortured by him, Peeta being physically and Katniss mentally. So they would always have that bond, something Gale could never have with her.
I also personally love Peeta because of what he represent as a Male Lead, we don't see much gentle and kind men in media and they are often showcased as weak other than Argeon from LOTR, Newt from Fantastic Beast and maybe Captain America, teenage girls are hardly given a chance to see these ascepts. Nothing is wrong with a man willing to say no to a fight if it means making peace, which a lot of girls found odd and thought Peeta to be weak.
Gale is the standard male, tall dark and handsome with a rebellious nature and so on and so forth but Peeta is still strong and handsome but also smart, loving, kind and gentle which is like a breathe of fresh air ngl.
Anyways sorry for the long comment, video was great again 😅

only one minute in and already love your point! i wish it was more understood that while the way people obsessed over the love triangle and turned lowkey capitol-esque with the way they cared more about romance than their actual lives and selves and the trauma they endure and that they were very dehumanised, the love triangle WAS written for a reason and is meant to be analysed and read into. the only way to combat the dehumanising romanticism that took place while staying true to the messages suzanne collins was making is to treat the love triangle as any other aspect of the book!

Gale’s fight against the capital is external while peeta’s is internal. Peeta stays good when the capital does everything it can to make him a killer. Gale becomes that hardened warrior and is able to direct it at the capital. Rather than becoming their weapon. Again, Katniss needs both to survive.
I’d actually argue that katniss stepping in for prim is more Peeta than Gale. It’s not intended as an outward act of rebellion. She is putting another before herself when the capital is trying to make selfishness necessary for survival.
Katniss’ “best moments” as listed by her mockingjay team seem to come from the peeta side of katniss

This is a small detail I noticed, but in Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, they mention Lucky giving the weather for the districts; why would the people of the capitol need that information? And why would a person in district 11 care about the weather in a different district?
You would think they would have individual channels for different districts to try to avoid as much unity between the parts of Panem as possible.

I agree with the hope stuff but i think this discussion is missing the hormonal teenage romance perspective. Katniss goes for Peta because he grew with her through all the horrible things they experienced while gale and her kind of fell out of touch when her hardship after the games was different from his. She needed to be understood to feel safe and she trusted the guy who she knew in their worst moments. If this is actually considered to be a less valuable take for young girls i disagree, because i think it is realistic. It is interesting to understand relationships of any kind.

Peeta and Katniss had a similar trauma bond but both of them wanted to heal more than they wanted to fight. Peeta literally went to therapy to work on his issues and grow for himself and then came back to rebuild with Katniss.

that last line, "yes use your words, but at a certain point you can't be a pushover anymore" really struck me. I am someone who is a people pleaser now, I used to have a lot of boundaries with people. Like if someone were to touch me, I'd immediately say don't touch me, and would always have a slick comeback toward people who are being rude. But as I got older and became more isolate, I lost that fire within me. I need to gain it back, I have become the person I am with my parents rather than see myself outside of it. When I would go to school is when I would have boundaries, but when I get home I would just be silent and let them get away with both disrespect, while also being understanding of them. I still have yet to communicate my perspective. I don't want to be the mad/yelling type, that's not me. I really am showing my weakness toward people now, rather than just standing up for myself. I am not sure how exactly I can fix it. I think I need to hang around black people again, back in my middle school days, I used to always be around them, and they truly taught me how to uphold my boundaries (I even became more extreme in mine than they were in theirs in some instances), but when I started hanging around with non-black people and myself basically is when I just unlearned that level of self respect. I started to maneuver through life as every bad thing about me was on the forefront, while most people have the luxury of blaming others, while not holding themselves accountable. This is how I used to be, and I had a lot of haters, but most of those people also respected me. I think my issue is that I detached myself from the world too much, and got in my own safe zone that I don't know how to truly interact with people. I like to just observe them, rather than be an active participant. Like something that I do that bothers people is I act slow sometimes, I know this was a big issue with my dad, when I ask for clarification on everything. And I do this with my manager and event coordinator at my job. Their patience really wears thin. Which I have to say is quite hypocritical considering that my manager is always talking about brushing things off, but isn't leading by example. I will bring that up to her. I am learning little by little to defend myself. I just don't see myself as equal to these people. I put myself in a different category, one that is beneath them and one that is above them. They're just regular humans reacting to everything, while I am someone who needs time to process and have different reasons for why I am doing things, maybe that gives me more success. Another category that I put myself in is the one that is beneath them, where I feel like theyre better at these things than I am, and I am constantly belittled. This is definitely a flaw that began with my dad, he always told me how "not too bright" I was, and it was obvious that I was not the son that he wanted, he used to call me big and sorry, and judged me, which was made worse by my mother who I definitely people please with the most, even in elementary school, she critiques every little thing that I do, that I feel out of my own body because of her, like theres just little things wrong about me that I need to change immediately, and it makes me feel like less than human. And knowing that the things they are judging are obvious things that I know the rest of the world will judge too. But do I want the rest of the world's approval? I just said that I feel like I am above them in a certain way. And for them to be the kinds of people who cannot control their temper, and lets something as little as me "being slow" get under their skin is just childish to me. My mind on this is too complex even for me to truly put into words. I feel both above and below the people around me.

Like they work a job because they have to (that’s why they get so triggered by it and/or complain all the time), I work a job simply for the experience of working and having something to do. I just re-listened to all three audiobooks and I must say I really dislike gale…it is like you said he knows only fighting, it is his only approach and even if his background had a part in him becoming that way, not everyone became like him with the same hardship…
When he is talking about the traps(which in the end killed prim) with beetee and katniss at 13, he is saying it is okay to kill medics/helpers that come for the wounded because the capitol did similar things. It is a disgusting way of agumentation and a way to enter a cycle of never ending violence.
He also treats katniss as if she was his girlfriend, which she never was. She never thinks about him in that way until the idea is pushed on her. Also he says things like „you Kiss/Love the one who is most in pain“, „she will choose the one she can’t live without.“ He is degrading the truth/autheticity of her feelings with this again and again(Kind of gaslighting if we want to use the Hype word). He is kissing her the first time without her consent. Etc.
She did kiss him more than once, in a wrong attempt to save the friendship, find out if there really could be the love people push on her and (yes, he had some truth there) because she wanned to soothe his pain. I understood this never as love, but just as utter confusion.
She has a similar confusion with peeta, since she is pretending to love him and at the same time people(snow, haymitch, gale) tell her how they know it is fake. She is in full survival mode and never considers she could have real feelings for peeta since it is miles away from her reality of certain death everywhere in the 1st Arena. And even with that she still feels something in their last kisses there and even more in the last kisses in the 2nd Arena. These feeling noone forced on her. However with the survival mode on, PTSD and peeta&whole district 12 gone she has not really the best sircumstances to connect with herself at all.
Katniss is the example that a person with the same cicumstances as Gale, can have Fire&Rage and still not stoop as low as the government they fight.
Which leaves me with one important question. Did she say yes to the 77th Hunger Games to lull Coin in Security to shoot her after? And did they really go through with them? Or not because she died without effecting the decission?
In case she wanned the hungergames for real, in some ways she is just as bad as gale with his traps…
Peeta was priviledged in 12th, but neither his abusive mum,the Hunger Games or the torture could kill the good in him. He let katniss always free and was always(save the hayjacked moments) supportive.
She didn’t choose peeta because she needed him. She chose peeta because she loved him. Gale just wanned her to feel wrong/bad if she chose peeta. At least he realized that being associated with the „trap bombs idea“ destroyed even the last bit of his hope/delusion. Not because she thought it was his bombs, she knew he wasn’t the one ordering the launch, but because he had this way of thinking. Which he showed already in district 2(he would have trapped the miners!).
She would have never been able to fall in love with man like him. And unknowingly to herself she had already started falling very slowly for peeta since the 1st arena, it just didn’t have the possibility to blossom, since it is the last thing she’d focus on until the war is ended.
The trilogy isn’t about a love triangle, it is about war and the choices we make as humans in extreme sircumstances.

I never understood the ending with the new games, at first glance it seems like a facade for Coin but then she talks about Snow's granddaughter as if she wants to get revenge and how Haymitch and her are similar? So it looks like she did kind of wanted the games to happen? When i read it I was very disappointed, because throughout the books she was always a compassionate person even with all the rage she had, but then she votes for innocent children to suffer what she went through? I don't think it makes sense with her character but it does seem as if she wanted the games for real, but I think they didn't happen because Coin died

Katniss definitely agreed to Coin's Hunger Games proposal solely as a way to gain her trust in order to kill her. Coin believed Katniss was finally completely in her camp and was willing to let her execute Snow, which then allowed Katniss to assasinate Coin instead. When Coin died, the new Hunger Games died with her.

1:46 yes, im with you and will stand to protect that opinion.
I always thought Gael was what was familiar, he has always been there. He was a safety net, not for her, but for her loved ones. Which is why the last thing she told him before she left for the first games was "don't let them starve" with the desperation of someone who was facing their own mortality.
On the other hand, Peeta was growth. With him she grew into the person she is in the epilogue, and in learning about him, grew to love him in a way she had never known before... and in part, in a way she was determined never to experience.
That's why, during the Catching Fire, she tried to hold on to what was familiar with Gael even when she didn't return his feelings, but later developed and almost obsessive focus on making sure Peeta survived the second games.
Mockingjay is just constant turmoil, just wanting to find a safe place to land in all the chaos around her... at least that's how I see the constant teetering between Gale and Peeta. But Im seeing it now through the lens of an adult and not the eyes of a hormonal teenager.

Great video. I think if it was just normal life Katniss would choose gale. I think his personality with need for challenge and adventure and organisation would suit her independence her and spontaneity. Peeta is a very feelings type person and would constantly need that emotional feedback and I think she would perhaps find this claustrophobic. But due to all the trauma peeta is a much better match. The last thing katniss would need is more challenges and peeta would provide that emotional support she would need and peace.

For me, the whole "Love Triangle" aspect to The Hunger Games is a betrayal of the books written by Suzanne Collins.
In one of the first insights we get from Katniss, we learn that Prim is the only person Katniss is sure she loves.
Throughout the first, second and even in the third book, Katniss's only goal is survival for herself and especially for Prim. And in that, Katniss fails.
As late as the last days of the Rebellion, we hear a conversation between Gale and Peeta in which they discuss Katniss. "Who do you think she will choose" "Whoever she needs to survive".
Katniss is goal oriented, not emotion oriented and, even after Prim's death and Gale getting a "big job in District 2", she realises that she would always have chosen Peeta because he is what she needs to survive.
"Love" has nothing to do with Katniss's choice of partner...

    • @natalie_rose2861
      @natalie_rose2861 7 месяцев назад +1

If that was true she'd be no different from snow.
My point is this. If Prim was her main concern she would have wanted to survive the 2nd games, not choose to save peeta, she would not have freaked out when Peeta stopped breathing in catching fire, she wouldn't have gotten what she calls 'that warm feeling in her stomach' when she kisses him.

It's not childish to enjoy a love story. There, also, aren't a lot of people in power (in America) who are like the Capitol in Hunger Games. With the way our governmental system is set up, it is near impossible for us to become like Panem - only a few people as murderous and manipulative as the Capitol make it through.
I don't mean this as a jab, merely an observation, but this assertion explains a LOT about what I hear from a lot of GenZ and some of my fellow millennials in praising this anti-lovestory and these current history erasing ideals that, seemingly, lack the understanding that humans aren't good nor evil; we are all complicated individuals with good and bad in us. Your direct phrasing in your intro helped me understand how yall see the world a little bit clearer. It's odd, and I highly disagree with it, but to each their own, I suppose.
Also, the humming was EXTREMELY painful on my hypersensitive hearing. Head's up, fellow autistics.

Very much agree with this. It's toxic to be so judgemental towards those who want to find love and don't dream of being a single girl boss forever.
Idk what happened to being non judgemental towards people who have different hopes & ideals. But now being family oriented is so awful. I mean it's disturbing... truly. People should take a look at history and statistics.

I still wish Katniss and Gale would've ended up together. He sacrificed everything for her, the only reason he didn't volenteer for Peeta in the hunger games is because she needed him to provide for her mum and sister. I think Snow was right about Katniss, she is selfish and can't think beond her current sistuation. She had no problem throwing Gale away with an ease because he couldn't say no, the bomb was not of his making. The more I've read the books and watched the movies the more I dislike Katniss and how selfish she is. In the end she chooses Peeta because he will do as she wishes, Peeta is someone she can control, she wouldn't be able to control Gale.

    • @thebestsoccerbeast
      @thebestsoccerbeast Год назад +7

I think that while katniss can be selfish, it's almost kind of refreshing in this context. So often we see heroes that are just the perfect person or "the chosen one" and do not really have depth or baggage. Katniss being so young, flawed, emotionally underdeveloped, and survival focused makes her feel more real. It's very clear from the very beginning that she didn't really mean for this to happen but it's acts she makes when she feels a particularly strong emotion that fuels the flames such as her actions after Rue's death or the hanging of Seneca Crane's dummy. These aren't really calculated acts. She makes it very clear the last thing she wanted to be was the symbol of a rebellion. And while gale wasn't the sole cause of Prim's death, he was complicit in it and there was no way that after everything she'd be able to look at him without seeing the death of her sister. If katniss was fire, then gale was a bomb and so it was only fitting for that being the way he exited katniss' s life. I think it's also important to remember that while all of this is happening katniss is only 16/17. That's a very young age to go through so much trauma. This ultimately causes katniss to only know how to survive not live which can definitely make katniss' actions seem selfish.

    • @marafrommberger4547
      @marafrommberger4547 Год назад +8

I think catnisses feelings about the bomb are enough of an excuse to not be able to love gale anymore. Nobody owes love for things others did for them.
