  • No movie adaptation of a book is "perfect" simply because...well...it's not a book. They have very different formulas and standards. However, by movie standards...these films did justice to the books 90% of the time!

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion but I really like the way they split mockingjay into to parts. I think that if they hadn’t split it the way they did the film would have felt very rushed.

My favorite line in the entire movie franchise has to be when Katie’s and Snow had their last conversation in the greenhouse behind the mansion.
“Oh my dear Ms.Everdeen, I thought we agreed... never to lie to each other.” This still gives me chills

The most horrific part for me of mocking part 2 was when Prim dies and Katniss screaming at buttercup these parts of the movie gave me chills and when I found out that Prim died I felt so sad and Heartbroken. and Katniss screaming at buttercup one of the only things of Prims it only and made me even more sad and I felt how Katniss felt for a bit after the movie

I loved the movies, they’re some of my favorite film adaptations. They really solidified some of the most powerful scenes from the books in my mind. And the soundtracks are perfect!
A lot of people gripe about the Mockingjay films, but personally, I love them. They bring a whole lot of power to the story itself and the individual book. I really enjoyed the darker tone and color pallet of those movies.

I had to put the book down for a moment (or ...several moments), when Finnick died because I was sobbing my eyes out. But I had that moment you had with Finnick when Prim died. Didn't understand it at all for some pages.

They managed to keep the spirit, important plot points, character personalities, and themes from the books while making really good movies. I think that’s why these movies are just so perfect. When bad movie adaptations make changes to adapt the story better to the screen, they often forget to preserve the spirit of the book in those changes. The Hunter Games films actually focus on what makes the books good and preserves that even with the changes they make. Even if some things play out slightly differently in the movies, they ensure the way things do play out in the movies still feels like The Hunger Games.

I’ve always wondered what it would have been like if Francis Lawrence had also directed the first film and although I’m happy with what we got, I would love to have seen what it would have been like.

I think when you look at it overall, the films portray basically the same story as the books. It was a very good adaptation, and all four movies were good. However, I always found Mockingjay Part 1 and 2 to feel very "Hollywood" in many ways, while it was something raw and pure about the first movie directed by Gary Ross that I really liked

    • @TheGeekApprentice
      @TheGeekApprentice  3 года назад +3

Interesting since most (including me) found the first to be the worst. I didn't like Gary Ross' changes and direction lol. But I do agree that the final two were a tad affected...CF is my personal fav. Nice to see variety though in opinions. :D

I would like to give another example on why these movies are great if you enjoy the books. It is in Catching Fire, when Snow visits Katniss and tells her if she doesn’t convince him she loves Peeta during the victors’ tour he will get rid of them all. By the end of the chat, in the book, when Snow stands up and is leaving the room he stops by Katniss and whispers to her ear: “by the way, I know about the kiss [between Gale and she]”. Katniss is horrified and it’s the first time she notices Snow’s smell of blood and roses, which is later on very important to the story. In the film, Snow just leaves a white rose to Katniss and, as he walks away, turns on a screen showing the kiss and we see how much it frightens Katniss. As viewers we are far more limited to experiencing senses than readers. I believe it makes a lot of sense to avoid the whole smell thing. I also believe Snow showing her instead of telling her is much more powerful (for the movie). Such a smart and thoughtful change, in my opinion.

Although I'm pretty disappointed in the adaptation of the first Hunger Games movie, the one thing I love about it more than the others is the overall vibe. It feels, for lack of a better word, organic? Less polished and more rustic. This could be attributed to the smaller budget tbh, but it does an excellent job at capturing the brutality of the Hunger Games and the destitution of the districts. I particularly love the depiction of District 12 (the gray color schemes, the frail looking children, the muddy streets and fragile houses and buildings), and the bloodbath at the Cornucopia (the battle feels so much less choreographed than fight scenes in the later movies). I feel like it highlights the inhumanity of the Hunger Games, especially since most of the actors playing the tributes are true to the characters' ages. While Catching Fire and the Mockingjay films are by far more detailed and more accurate to the books, they can sometimes come across as too rich or elaborate. I was fairly disappointed in how much bigger and grander (comparatively speaking) District 12 seemed in Catching Fire imo (bigger buildings, seemingly more space), and how much less personal the settings felt in the following 3 films (perhaps from more CGI). The Catching Fire and Mockingjay movies are absolutely excellent and overall much better than The Hunger Games, but the simplicity of the first movie I think was actually one of its strengths that I wish translated just a little more in the following films.

The biggies issue I have with the movies all relates to removing Madge undersee because not only did it make the pin less meaningful but also is why we didn’t get my favorite scene from the books in the film . Watching the second quarter quill . That was my favorite part of catching fire and because of cutting Madge we never got to see it . I’d had even taken. Them turning it into a solo film but cutting it completely sucks I wanna see the sequel quarter quill officially not fan made

My sister and I geeked out on the movies really hard and watched every one together in the theater and read the books afterwards, when there’s a series like this I always watch the movie first so I don’t sit there and talk about how the book is better the whole time haha

I - like you- watched the movies before I read the books. I loved the movies sooo much. This year I read the books. The books gave me a better understanding of what I watched in the movies. Such as, Katniss's struggle with ptsd. That being said, the movies brought to life certain scenes. Such as, the scene where katniss watches the district 8 hospital burn down in flames. Also, the movie did an amazing job in the first movie when the gong rang out. In my opinion, they perfectly captured the chaos (especially with the music). Those are just some of my thoughts. BTW I have subscribed and hope to see more hunger games content from you.

I agree on your view on music playing such an important role in the Hunger Games or any movie for that matter. I come from a Music background, my dad being a choir and orchestra conductor. The music has to make sense and fit in the movie or it falls apart.

I really didn't like the last book because I was bored by everything in 13 (it felt like moving in slow motion) and when they came to the capitol everything happened too fast. When I saw the movies I was so relieved. I loved them especially catching fire and they made the whole series so much better even tho I already liked it. I also think the change of director from the first to the other films was a really good choice. At least that was what I thought must be the reason why I enjoy the 2nd & 3rd 1+2 way more than the first.

i was itching for more hunger games video essays, so im glad i found ur channel! i was a film student and i agree about the comment u made about negative book readers not understanding how films work. trust me, i was focusing on screenplays in school, and one page equals one minute. thats why screenplays for major films are over 100+ pages. compared to books that can go up to being past 300 pages, it's very hard to translate that into a script where each page and scene counts to visually convey the story and other symbolism, etc. (aka showing not telling). u cant be super decriptive on scripts, but u have to masterfully word things to get the point across fast and in few words. tons of stuff get cut as a result.

You're right, there's plenty to say hour what they should have done, what they got wrong or they missed out. But there's so much to say about what was brilliant too. For me they got Prim 100%. Not just the casting, but her nuance as a character. The same for Effie and Haymitch too. Almost all the characters actually!! Totally agree The Hanging Tree was sensational. What got me (and gets me every time too) is the last farewell to Rue. Perfectly done and never fails to move me when I see it.

This is an unpopular opinion amongst many book readers and film critics but the channel CinemaWins covered it fairly well and I totally agree with it: the way the first movie did the beginning of the actual games. A lot of people criticized this for it's use of 'shaky cam' and whatnot but the score/music and action we see was sooo well done.
There's a lot I can point out here but some notable highlights:
    - The look of sheer terror on Jennifer Lawrence's face was perfect when she got into the tube and Cinna just nods. He has faith in her but is also aware of the gravity of the situation. All conveyed through a single expression.
    - We see Katniss come up to the podium, the sun shines in her eyes before she takes in her surroundings. The next shots of other tributes spliced in with scenes from the control room, the capitol, her family and district 12 are all amazing too.
    - We see Katniss eyeing the bow and arrow and Peeta shaking his head. We're honestly wondering if she'll go for it...even though, deep down, we know she won't. That's how good the acting is...then the total silence as it cuts to Gale sitting alone in the field, pondering her fate. Excellent film making.
Then it starts...the scene is chaotic and as a viewer, we get an amazing feel for what Katniss is experiencing, totally through the brilliance of the score, that's literally all we hear as the audience. I could go on but yeah, this whole 4 minute bit was just epic.

I would have cast different for the main three. Jennifer didn’t look right and the character of Katniss lost some of her personality in the transition to the movie, which could partly be Jennifer’s fault as she didn’t seem to understand aspects of her own character. Peeta, same thing actually. Josh is too short to be Peeta and he looked wrong next to Jennifer. He portrayed him okay, but another actor could have done the same. And for Gale, I would have cast someone who looked more like the book character because again, the character Gale isn’t a spectacularly difficult character to nail down so another actor could have done fine.
Overall, I blame Gary Ross for a lot of his cast decisions.
Other random missing moments from the books I was sad to see go were a lot of the cave scenes between Katniss and Peeta, and then the after jabberjay hour scene between them and perhaps them training for the Quell, because it all developed them further as characters as well as the genuine part of their romance.

If you literally started your relationship with books and the films adapted from them with the "Harry Potter" series and the "Hunger Games" trilogy then of course you'd hate the popular discourse of bashing film adaptions as of late. I think if you started with something like Hollywood's anime live action film adaptations (that have been bashed for racism and unnecessary adaptational inaccuracies) then you'd understand the hate if not joined in on it a lot sooner.
