I just played this adventure today, and my character, who was the only one left alive on the top floor when the rocket launched, was given the opportunity to try and steer it. Nat 1, I lost control and it reversed course. I tried again, got a 4, could not regain control. As a final act, I tried to steer the rocket away from Candlekeep and into the ocean... and got a Nat 1. The rocket crashed, went through several buildings, killed over a dozen of the library's staff, as well as all the people on board (except for our Orc Barabarian, because of course) and set fire to hundreds of books. With no one to know it was my fault (the Orc can't speak), rumor is they'll probably build a statue of me to remember my valiant sacrifice.
I feel like there really was a missed opportunity to have the PC's desperately trying to figure out the controls in order to land the rocket. But having it be a gateway to a Spelljammer adventure would also be cool.
I'll be doing it as a one shot this weekend, I know they like to be murder hobos a lot but I will make sure they are "encouraged" to RP as Lawful Good. Get them out of their comfort zone. Great video, great information. This will be the first session I'll have done from this book, I've had it over a year.
Definitely looks interesting . Was waiting for your tutorial on this adventure and I am not disappointed As you out it, action packed mystery which should be so much fun for the players What is your take on the one hour timer ? Should we set a physical timer ? Or should we estimate it with the types of activities the players engage in ? Or a mix of both ?
My group ignited the rocket while standing under it. I thought would be a TPK but someone had to roll a Nat 20 and saved everyone but the one dead by double damage.
I might stuff ZZT inside the collection of books in the tower to lead them into the next adventure if they get stuck in space. And will probably find a place to put a teleportation circle in one of the other adventures. Maybe somewhere in Waterdeep during SoYM?
Revivify should work in the dead librarian because it doesn't have the "willing soul" rider, right? I feel like my players may catch on to that if I say it doesn't work...
I'm looking forward to running this one shot. A freshie dm here, just want to ask for inputs as to what feasible items my players should start this hilarious adventure with. Should I let them have one or two low tier magic items per player? and should I grant them sufficient gold in order to make some meaningful material purchase such as costly spell components, prior to starting the adventure proper?

Scrolls of teleportation, gaseous form, & misty step could be fun. I love the idea of a parachute as well!

low tier magic items are fine! in regards of items, they can have at it I say! This is a goofy adventure, it doesnt need to be taken seriously!
