  • Today we'll be comparing the PACKAPUNCH PRO Cable by Retro Gaming Cables UK against a standard non-shielded option! Who will come out on top?
    *It is recommended not to use the "generic" type of SCART Cable on the 5X Pro, according to the 5X Pro's own manual. The wrong type or a poorly constructed one can damage the 5X Pro. This video is made to show the performance difference that shielding can make, and if a non-shieled or generic option is the only option available to someone, give them an idea what to expect. I would also recommend going with something that is officially recognized or meets the specs within the 5X Pro's manual, such as HD Retrovision or RetroGamingCable's higher end offerings.
    *Important Call-Out: RUclips's compression does take away a lot of detail that is seen in person that devices like RetroTINK, RAD2X, CARBY, and more output. Bear that in mind with any content containing capture footage from those devices. My commentary and opinions come from the Raw Capture Files and what it looks like on my TV, I can't account for what details are lost to compression until after the video is uploaded.

    large spaces of solid colours are what really show off the shielding. If poorly shielded, in motion it can look more dirty than it needs

    Thanks everyone for watching! It has been an interesting and educating journey making content. One thing I've come to learn is the impact RUclips's Compression can have on the footage from all these Retro Enhancement Devices. Keep in mind that some detail is always lost with compression. My commentary is in response to what I've experienced from playing on my TV and watching the Raw Capture Files. I've added this info to the description of videos going forward, but wanted to post this comment to all the videos prior to that change. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it!

    Great video. Question (off topic) to use hd retrovision component cables on a PS1, is a upscaler needed as well to play via HDTV?

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  Год назад +1

      If the TV has the appropriate inputs, you don’t need an upscaler or enhancer like RetroTINK. That is how much of the early content on my channel was recorded Example with GameCube Games on Wii with component, No upscaler : ( ruclips.net/video/U4NvWw1HY8Y/видео.html (
      Consoles that output 480p or better like the Wii or Xbox look fine without RetroTINK, the differences aren’t as mind blowing as 4th Gen or older consoles.
      It’s the older ones that really benefit from it. PS1 definitely does, especially when paired with a superior cable option like SCART. Ive never tried Component with PS1 though, curious as to what that would look like. Let me know how it goes!

    What switchbox do you use to have more consoles hooked up to the tv?

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  2 года назад

      I use two Extron Crosspoint 300s. All but one of my consoles connects to it either via component or composite. For SCART, I have a couple that I run separate that I remove and plug into my 5X Pro as needed. I use scart for PS1 always, and every now and then with other systems. The top Extron runs into the bottom one, which then has multiple outputs in use that run to various things in my set up that make capture work more efficient. I show a lot of it in this video:

    Is it better than a component cable on an hd screen ?
    I want to take one for Wii on my crt but I hesitated

      I haven’t yet been able to do that comparison; I want to get Component Cables for the SNES, but they are hard to get right now, so I started with RGB. I can say that HD Retrovision does make shielded component cables for Wii, and unlike the ones for SNES, they are available and priced lower. I got them recently a noticed a small bump in performance vs the 3rd party cables I had.

      @@RetroBoost I think the best for SNES RGB are the Gamecubecabel. (The darker black ones)

    What about the audio hiss with cheaper one??

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  2 года назад +1

      I didn't notice any hisses or hums with the one I got. I just went back though my capture footage at max volume to be sure. I recorded footage from F-ZERO, Kirby, and TMNT, didn't hear any issues in any. There are many different brands that offer these cheaper cables though, it was probably just luck I got one as good as this one did. Officially, RetroTINK doesn't recommend using cables like this. I did it to both show the difference shielding can make and for anyone who doesn't have any option but to try one like this.

    It’s all about the shielding. The lines/pattern is just interference.

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  2 года назад +1

      That’s what I suspected, but wasn’t sure if had anything else to do with how the shielded cable was put together.

      @@RetroBoost btw, I don't get it, is "non-shielded" cable licensed nintendo cable or just cheap generic. Quality wise packapunch looks crisppier.

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  2 года назад +1

      @@djrkzr in an effort not to shame any particular brand, I didn’t name the non-shielded one. If you go to Amazon.com and search for Nintendo or snes scart cables, you’ll get a bunch of results for cables that cost around the $20 mark, which is where the non-shielded one was bought from. It is not a Nintendo-branded product, neither of these are, nor is there any official Nintendo SCART cable that I’m aware of. And even though the non-shielded one(s) isn’t as good compared to the Pro one, it’s still better than composite, at least to me, giving them some value.

  • @jdcasanasr

    Can't barely notice any difference, not to say the quality of the video itself Is pretty crappy. Confirmation bias maybe?

    • @RetroBoost
      @RetroBoost  Год назад +1

      The first thing I’ll say is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is all my opinion, if you see something different or disagree, that’s fine. In fact that’s great, because it can lend to looking over something with a new perspective or purpose.
      Watching this on my phone, pausing at 4:58, I can see the difference there more than anywhere else. A big part of that is RUclips compressing it down vs the raw export, in which the differences are more visible in the footage that is darker.
      If you are going to go with a less expensive cable, just make sure it’s one that’ll work and has all the right specs, because it’s not recommended to use generic/knock off ones with the 5X Pro, as specified within the manual.
