What’s really fascinating about this gimmick to me, is that it seems really strategically rich- for instance, you have the list of the best terra types, but those aren’t something you absolutely need to live by. I can imagine several layers of strategy, where people choose unorthodox Tera types because they’re planning around the ‘optimal’ Tera types. There’s also the versatility of when to use it- to go early to allow for safe setup, or to wait until a pivotal moment to swing the odds back in your favor. It all seems really fun and unique.

    • @SkyBlueFox1
      @SkyBlueFox1 2 года назад +69

Tbh what I find really interesting about it is that Gamefreak actually managed to nail one of these gimmick-mechanics. Every other gimmick they’ve tried introducing seems to have had a negative effect on competitive in some way (while also being pointless in singleplayer, except Dynamax which was so OP as to be required in singleplayer :y ), but this actually provides an extra layer of depth without going overboard.
Like, even in the main story, where I was consistently overleveled and Terastalizing didn’t matter much, I was still going out of my way to get shards because changing my team’s Tera types was a really appealing idea. Changing Armarouge to Fighting to give it resistance to Dark, for instance, and powering up Aura Sphere. Granted, that’s probably not super optimal, but I gave it some thought and made the decision myself based on proper strategizing and theory-crafting, which is something I never really felt about Mega Evos or Dynamaxing.

    • @JayceCH.
      @JayceCH. 2 года назад +5

@@SkyBlueFox1 1) Dynamax was never mandatory except on multiplayer.
      2) Terastylize has less strategic layers than Dynamax simply because of secondary effects from Max moves.
      3) NO ONE is going out their way to change their tera types while doing the story except recatching. It takes 50 fucking shards to do so. So all Terastylize turns out to be is just Adaptability while playing through the game. Thats why you feel like you dont need it.

      1) person was not making a litteral claim about it being impossible to beat without, rather that it'd be much harder. This ought to be understood through context
      2) saying "terra types provide an extra layer of depth without going overboard" is not at all the same thing as saying "terra types add more gameplay depth than all previous generational gimmics, including dynamax", in fact it implies quite the opposite, that terra types provide less depth than certain previous gimmics, thus hitting some kind of sweet spot.
      3) the person who posted originally was refering to their own, personal experience of the game, which will obviously differ from the experience others have with it. You cannot respond to someone saying "i did X thing" with "nobody ever does X thing".

Tera Flying actually has many more benefits:
Lots of things are 4x weak to Ground or Fighting. Flying can resist Fighting and is immune to Ground, making for a low-weakness Pokémon that can dish out big damage.

Keep in mind that this was based on how often among the 400 (or however many Pokemon are legal and viable, which Tera probably widens more than most are thinking) a given Tera Type appeared as their "best" in Wolfey's, and possibly his team's, opinion. Make a list for only the "best" Pokemon in competitive play and you'll likely get something very different.
Never mind that this Mechanic especially has a lot of potential for an ever evolving meta game as Pokemon drift in and out based on how well they counter or are countered by specific Mon and Tera combinations. Who knows. Hydreigon might best use Steel right now, but a Fire Lycanroc (random example) might emerge as a counter versus the over abundance of Tera Steel in general. Which is then countered by a Tera Ground Whiscash that wasn't really viable before due to Earthquake missing that levitating annoyance and Grass being common in general (100% Crit Meowscarada signature move) before being pushed out by the new Fire threats.
Point is: This list is not representative of the current or future meta of competitive play. Just an exercise in statistical analysis.

This is still a strategy based game remember. I think Mega Evolution really kinda soured things a bit, ensuring that it was all about power vs strategy. GMax was strat based because you needed to account for which pokemon might go for it, when they might go for it. DMax or GMax too soon, and you're playing into their hands, leaving yourself open, and mostly praying you can survive. Do it too late, and it's the same boat.
Whereas with Mega Evolution was just a mess. Already OP Pokemon gained EVEN MORE power, and team pools became extremely narrow. There weren't enough viable pokemon to be varied. Every team was the same. Which doesn't make competitive very fun.

Wait does that mean your tera types are revealed? I think thats honestly worse for strategy. Its like showing your moves in team preview. Who ever said surprise isn't strategy, not knowing what your opponent may do and predicting it appropriately is the pinnacle of strategy. Knowing all of your opponents terra-types beforehand kills a lot of that. It takes out a lot of surprise factor and prediction and makes it more about brute forcing your way through.
(Edit: I just found out this also includes moves, abilities, and items being shown before the battle. Holy crap tournament play sounds so unfun to me. That has 1 weakness, resists flying and steel which is a problem for it so it has defensive utility for it, is neutral to the others, and ice/electric is fantastic coverage. and ofc after 1 quiver you probably can just ice beam any stupid ground type thinking it's able to hit your only weakness while also ending water types who absolutely hard wall this thing otherwise

Tera Flying is great for hazard setters like Glimmora since it basically gives them an extra turn to set up.
Granted this means giving up your tera for just setting entry hazards, but the more hits required to take out a glimmora, the more hazards on your opponent's side of the field. And most people don't open with their hazard cleaner. For some reason. Even though Glimmora can learn a hazard cleaning move...

Shortest terms the best tera type competitively is ones that are either
A.) Pure offensive for same standard types for a power boost OR
B.) A purely defensive type like steel with its insane number of resistances
    OR
C.) A psuedo hybrid function that leans towards defense - in that it gets rid of the user's weakness but offensively it can still serve a distinct purpose like allow the pokemon to get stab for a coverage move

    - Poison landed as second worse but it's one the most used defensive types.
    - Fairy landed extremely low and it's perhaps the most used actually both ofensive (Flutter mane) and defensive (Heatran, ting lu, to name a few)
    - Normal landed in C tier and it's awesome to boost moves like E-Speed (Dragonite, Entei, Arcanine) and Hyper voice (Ursaluna Blood moon).
    - Flying also landed pretty low as a lot of pokemon which dont get good flying stab can use tera blast, also, some non flying like roaring moon

So some types have passives that affect them
People have mentioned a bunch of them but let me collectively mention all of them
Fire: Imume to Burn Status Effect, (Extra note in Sun also good for grasstypes that have Harvest/Leaf Guard but usually get 1 shot by any fire move during sun)
Grass: Imume to all powder moves and Leech Seed
Poison: Imume to the Poison Status effect unless Corosion
Electric: Imume to the Paralize status effect, (Also Earth Eater makes them imume to ground type attacks not just levitate)
Steel: Imume to the Poison status effect unless Corosion, Also weak now to the salt DoT
Water: Weak now to the Salt DoT
Rock: 50% more spD in Sandstorm
Ice: 50% more Def in Snowstorm, Imume to the Freeze Status effect, Now capable of using Sheer cold for the full 30%
Dark: Imume to Prankster (as mentioned by wolfey)
Ghost: Imume to trapping moves/abilities (So mean look or arena trap etc.)

    Pokemon Tera Type Summary
    D Tier
    - 0:47 PSYCHIC: doesnt hit a lot on super effective, only resists itself and fighting, best on a psychic type that also has coverage, overall the weakest link
    - 1:35 POISON: only weak to ground and psychic types and resists fighting, poison, bug, grass, and fairy types, hits only grass and fair for super effective, resisted by poison, ground, ghost, rock, and useless against steel, best for dark types with mid bulk/good offense coverage
    - 2:36 BUG: resists fighting, ground, and grass types, hits grass, psychic, and dark types for super effective, takes double dmg from flying, rock, and fire types, resisted by fighting, steel, flying, poison, ghost, fire, and fairy types, good for rock types for the defense and they cover bugs weaknesses
    C Tier
    - 4:21 FAIRY: only weak to poison and steel, hits fighting, dark, and dragon for super effective, doesnt hit fire and steel offensively, fairy's resistances arent common, dragon types will prob just tera steel, good for defensive dark, normal, and psychic types by gaining resistances
    - 5:49 NORMAL: just weak to fighting and immune to ghost, doesnt hit anything for super effective and has no resistances itself, resisted by rock, steel, and useless against ghosts, good for really offensive normal types like slaking or pokemon who know strong normal moves like toxtricity and hariama
    - 6:33 FLYING: hits fighting, grass, and bug for super effective, immune to ground types, weak to rock, ice, and electric which are very offensive, things you do hit for super effective arent high for priority, best for electric, rock, and steel types that want help from fighting and ground types, also good for flying types who want to up there dmg
    - 7:47 ROCK: hits flying, ice, bug, and fire for super effective, resists normal, flying, poison, and fire, gets SpD up when in Sandstorm, resisted by fighting, ground, and steel, theyre weak to fighting, ground, water, grass, and steel types, good for certain grass pokemon like breloom and leafeon cause they cover theyre ground and water weakness, pokemon like tyranitar can shed some weaknesses, gain a power boost, and maintain the SpD up in Sandstorm
    - 8:56 ICE: hits dragon, ground, flying, and grass for super effective, weak to fighting, rock, steel, and fire, only resists itself, REALLY good offensive synergy with electric since they are the most offensive types when paired together, Jolteon with ice type tera and tera blast can be a major threat (not sure if snowstorm works for tera ice types but if so thats a plus as well)
    B Tier
    - 9:52 DRAGON: resists fire, water, grass, and electric, hit a lot of pokemon for neutral, only hits other dragons for super effective, best for bulky water pokemon since theyre only weak to grass and electric, could also go on really offensive dragons like garchomp and hydreigon
    - 10:33 GHOST: immune to fighting and normal, only resisted by dark, only hits ghosts and psychics for super effective, resists bug and poison which are not really offensive, best used for pokemon who want to be immune to normal and fighting of which blissey and tyranitar are big stand outs, also good for offensive ghost types
    - 11:16 GRASS: hits ground, rock, and water for super effective which are really good types, resists water, grass, ground, and electric, weak to fire, poison, flying, bug, and ice, resisted by flying, poison, bug, steel, fire, grass, AND dragon, fire types will be the most benefited from this tera type since grass covers fires weaknesses and via versa, defensive water types and some ground types can also use this type
    A Tier
    - 12:12 DARK: resists ghost and immune to psychic, immune to prankster, weak to fairy, cant hit a lot for super effective, very good on ghost and psychic pokemon, also good on bulky pokemon who want to set up trick room, can be on other dark types and some poison types as well
    - 12:59 FIGHTING: hits normal, ice, dark, rock, and steel for super effective, only weak to fairy, psychic, and flying, only 3 resistances but 2 of them are rock and dark, a total of 5 types resist it which are flying, poison, bug, fairy, and psychic, ghosts are also straight up immune, good for ghosts type because fighting can hit dark and normal types, also can be put on ice types because rock and steel will be scared off by the tera type plus flying since you can hit them for super effective, good pokemon are lurantis and staraptor
    - 14:11 ELECTRIC: only weak to ground and resists flying, steel, and electric, can hit pesky water and flying types, struggles against grass, electric, and dragon types and cant hit ground types at all, can be used for defense or offense, pokemon with Levitate will be able to use this type effectively since theyll have no weaknesses like rotom and elecktross (Note: you can put electric tera on shedinja and give it air balloon if your that kind of person)
    - 14:57 GROUND: hits poison, rock, steel, fire, and electric for super effective, the only types that resist it are bug, and grass of which flying has immunity, only weak to ice, grass, and water, most pokemon know ground type attacks, really good for fairy types since it hits all of its resistance, pokemon who want electric immunity like gyarados can also take advantage of it and pokemon who want to beat steel types like muk, copperajah, and weavile, and of coarse ground types can use this to buff up theyre ground moves
    S Tier (The good stuff)
    - 16:01 FIRE: a good amount of resistances, only weak to rock, water, and ground, can hit annoying steel, grass, ice, and bug for super effective, water, rock, fire, and dragon resist fire but its a good trade off, grass types like leafeon will be good with tera fire since grass hits for fires weaknesses and fire can keep ice and bug pokemon in check, psychic types will appreciate a way to get rid of steel types, fairy types are in the same boat, just like fairy and psychic types, offensive dragons like hydreigon will need help against steel and fire also covers ice types, pokemon such as torkoal will of coarse love it for offense
    - 17:03 WATER: only weak to electric and grass, resists fire, ice, water, and steel, have rain dance for more power, only hits fire, rock, and ground types, best pokemon for this tera are offensive water types who need help, can be used defensivly like for arcanine who want to stay in longer, steel and grass to get rid of weaknesses
    - 18:00 STEEL: resists a whopping total of 10 TYPES AND AN IMMUNITY, only weak to fighting, ground, and fire, doesnt hit a lot for super effective but doesnt matter really, if your struggling to pick a tera type for a pokemon then just pick steel, some big pokemon are dragons, set up, support, and defensive pokemon like leech seed recover appletun

I've been playing Monster Hunter: Rise Sunbreak, but it'll be around a month before the next update and I'm running out of stuff to do in that game, so I need something else to play. I've only played up to Gen 5 until now, so I'm kind of excited to see how things have changed, especially with the removal of random encounters.

Be mindful that a top tier Tera might not be the best type for every mon.

My favourite when i was testing out my team on showdown before breeding is Water Sap Sipper Gogoat.
They can bait the opponent into thinking they can one shot gogoat with its 5 weakness(and tank fire and ice more especially well).
The Water Tera also baits the opponent into using Grass move on Gogoat, triggering its Sap Sipper to boost its attack. This also means Gogoat will only have 1 weakness that is Electric which is not common at the moment.
You can also use Gogoat as a pivot when you predict the very popular Amongus’s Spore as well. I slapped a Choice Band on it, and run 0IV Brave so it can function under Trick Room with Skeldelrige(i cant spell) that i purposely built for trick room as well.

I am surprised you didn't mention Tera Fire's value on physical attackers, making them immune to Burns.

I STILL NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY FAIRY RESISTS BUG. like fairy isnt super effective against bug neither does it logically make sense that a fairy would resist bug if anything it makes sense that it would be WEAK to bug. bug being the worst type AND with all of the ice type buffs this gen, they coulda buffed it by making it at least hit fairy types for neutral. the best type resisting the worst type is just so lame in game balance like have at least something thats going for bug types 💀

Took notes on the video for my own reference and wanted to share them here. Summary of recommendations from the video follow for those who want to use them later without needing to look for a specific point in the video. Headers are the Tera type in question, followed by what they are best on, in the order they are presented in the video. Please don’t only use this and watch the video as well to support Wolfey’s content, he works hard on it. This is meant more as a reference after watching.
    Psychic -
Offensive Psychic types to maximize damage
    Poison -
Dark types with middling bulk and good offensive coverage (i.e. Krookodile and Hydreigon) for defensive coverage
    Bug -
Mons that want better defense against Ground without the weaknesses Flying and Grass give
Rock types have good synergy both ways
    Fairy -
Defensive Dark types for resistances given
Defensive Normal types for resistances given
Defensive Psychic types for resistances given
    Normal -
Offensive Normal types for extra damage
Any Mon using a powerful Normal move to maximize the damage those moves do (i.e. Boomburst or Facade)
    Flying -
Electric, Rock and Steel for defensive help against Ground and Fighting
    Flying types for damage output
    Rock -
Grass types have good synergy both ways
Ground for better coverage of Flying and Bug
Rock dual types to lose second type weaknesses, boost Rock type offense and maintain their sandstorm buff
    Ice -
Fast offensive Electric types for coverage of their Ground weakness and others besides that; added defensive weaknesses they gain aren’t a concern since these Mons aren’t focused on staying power anyway
    Dragon -
Bulky Water types for defensive coverage of both their weaknesses
Maybe on natural powerful Dragon types, but usually a better option
    Ghost -
    Anything very threatened by Fighting
    Offensive Ghost types
    Grass -
Fire types which have good synergy both ways
    Defensive Water types
    Dark -
Ghost and Psychic types in general
Bulky Mons that want to use Trick Room
Offensive Dark types to further buff them
    Poison to grant Psychic immunity
    Fighting -
Ghosts that lack Normal and Dark coverage
    Ice types in general
Mons with good Fighting moves which struggle against things that is effective against using their normal STAB
    Electric -
    Offensive Electric types
    Mons with good Electric moves
Mons with Levitate for a zero weakness combo
    Electric types with Levitate already
    Ground -
Offensive Fairy types can hit all three types that resist their STAB normally with it
    Anything needing an Electric immunity
Anything that struggles against Steel offensively
    Ground types in general
    Fire -
    Grass synergizes well both ways
Psychic for added Steel coverage offensively
Fairy for dealing with Steel both ways
Dragon for added Steel coverage offensively and Ice coverage both ways
    Fire for maximizing offense
    Water -
    Offensive Water types
    Fire for defense against Water
    Steel for defense against Fire
    Grass types in general
    Steel -
Useful in general so a good choice if unsure
    Dragons with dual Ice weakness
Setup Mons to help buy them time
Support Mons to help them tank hits better
Defensive Mons that wear enemies down over time (i.e. Leech Seed Appletun)
I hope you find this useful, cheers.
