Great vid! I saw the F-Type launch video up at the Jaguar proving ground test track in October 2012. Promised myself there and then I'd own one one day. Bought the V8R AWD convertible in April 2019. It was 3 years old, low mileage, full OEM service history and paid 48% of the sticker price with a 2 year extended Jaguar warranty. I can't ever see myself selling. A last hurrah of sensory overload. Nothing compares to visceral feeling of roof down, cold start and the cat destroying 3k rpm throttle tap!

My wife and I bought a 2017 F-Type SVR in April.
We bought it as a mid 50s YOLO purchase for half of the original $130k sticker price with a one year CPO warranty through 2023.
Free maintenance and oil changes made this purchase a no brainer.

In 2019 I purchased a 2015 F-Type for $48,000. The original owner took all of the depreciation, and I got a great car at a good price with only 19,000 miles on it. I love the F-Type and have had no issues since I purchased the car. The key is to NOT buy one of these new, but wait for someone else to take the hit on the depreciating value before you buy. Then, all you have to do is enjoy the ride.

I’ve had 6 Jags & they’ve all been very reliable. My favourite was an 01 XJR, the only thing I had to spend money on was the rear active shocks £500 because they rattled slightly and it annoyed me and a bit of paint elsewhere. The most reliable was an 07 XK 4.2, a few electrical gremlins were solved with a decent battery. Absolutely nothing else needed, I would still have it today but I sold it to buy a house.

I drove an XF for many years. I bought it used and it had a couple years of warranty left when I got it. By the time the warranty ran out, it was a pretty well sorted car. The regular maintenance was about as much as the Maserati I replaced it with. Hundreds for an oil change and 3k for a full brake job, but it was much more reliable than the Maserati.

    • @johntechwriter

If your Jag is out of warranty, do not have it serviced by a Jag dealer. Their service shop is a for-profit operation crewed by 19-year-olds fresh out of school who only know one thing: if it isn’t running right, keep replacing expensive components until it is. This might be acceptable while the car is under warranty, but it isn’t, find an independent service shop that specializes in, or at least knows about Jaguar. If they’re honest, you’ll have affordable reliability for 15+ years.

Since purchase 18mths ago, the car has cost me a new fuel filter and sensor, two suspension arms and a set of tyres. The tyres that came with the car were OK, worn more on the rear than on the front but I always budget for replacing tyres when I buy another car anyway. Fuel economy, and this is a 3.0l V6 S , is 45ml-50mpg while cruising and 35-40mpg on mixed driving. Acceleration is 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds.
Do your homework ( as I do on any car that interests me ) and you will have a very nice car with plenty of leather and electronics which drives very smoothly.

Two of the older XJRs I own have over 200k miles on the odometer! Of the 30+ Jags I've owned, only one had issues bad enough to make me want to get rid of it. Maintenance is key. People often buy premium cars and don't factor in the total cost of ownership, so they skip the maintenance due to the costs but then blame the manufacturer when parts/components start failing.

I've owned my 2009 XKR Portfolio for 10 years now and it's by far the best, most reliable and fun car I've ever owned. To me it's still one of the most beautiful cars that I've ever seen. The brakes on this particular model are crazy expensive, but work amazingly well. All the other parts are pretty average. Oil changes are simple, I do them myself. It is absolutely true that the supercharged V8 engines produce a ton of heat. This destroys the cooling hoses after about 10 years. Those parts aren't very expensive and there is a great forum where you can get help with replacing those hoses. I would recommend this car to anyone who loves beautiful fast cars and isn't afraid to do some work on them. If you have a leather dash, you have to keep it well oiled and use a sun sheild or it will shrink and look terrible. Mine still looks brand new.

A really good breakdown. The most important thing for the advanced enthusiast is to learn that the market is dictated by emotions and impressions rather than facts. So if you're not in it to make money, but simply to enjoy good things for yourself, then that's how you find the bargains: by looking at the dark horses that the masses believe to be a bigger risk. Emphasis on the word believe.

Great video, Mark. The value these used F-Types offer is top of class. I think reason 5 is the typical Jag customer, which is, oh, I don't know, maybe 37% millionaires? That means Jag builds in a lot of slop into the MSRP to take advantage of full price buyers. If you check autotrader for brand new V8 Rs, there is a huge range of dealer offers from low 80s to 120s. So a lot of Jags, due to the maybe 63% buyers, sell new for way less than MSRP. This appears in the used market as depreciation, but its actually just typical new car discounts.

In the early 2000s, I bought a ten year old Jaguar XJS convertible with 30k miles for $12,000. It was perfect and looked brand new. V12 power and a beautiful drive. Not so much a sports car as a grand tourer. I kept it for a little less than ten years and sold it to a neighbor. I had a few things repaired during ownership, but relatively minor cost over nine years. Interestingly, the cruise control would stop working occasionally. It was because of a small plastic part integral to the mechanical cruise control system. For its size, it was relatively expensive to replace. Using a rubber grommet and zip tie, it was a two minute fix. It seemed the fix would last a year and require a new grommet and zip tie. People would stop to look at the car when out and about and many thumbs up when on the road. Jaguar produced the XJS for twenty years.

Yes, people often overlooked JLR products. Last year when inventory was plentiful you can snag a slightly used 2018 XE with 50Kkms around $30 grand. Used 2017-2018 F-pace with less than 70Kkms around less than $35-40 grand. People are getting smarter nowadays. We were watching the JLR market and the great XE and F paces are now all sold out on the used market. Check the auto trader and the ones left are the not so appealing ones. And the 2.9% finance on CPO units was a great deal.
By the way, What kind of warranty did you have? Was it JLR CPO or and aftermarket warranty company from dealer? I don’t wanna get screwed and I know that dealer.

My warranty qualified for the CPO which definitely is better, but with that said I have taken my car in for a squeaky pedal box a couple times and always gets “greased”. Only to find squeaking after another few short miles. I have heard of others on forums and in other countries getting a more productive result such as pedal box replace, new rear calipers as they fade, and some have gotten that rusty bottom steel brace replace under warranty.. Also on that note I still love these cars and would do it all over again. Did you happen to see my review on the F Pace in the channel?

All I can say is Mercedes and BMW are worse in upkeep expenses and repairs, they are always in the shop getting fixed, I have friends who work at these dealerships and say they are constantly in the shop, but the owners refuse to tell people that they're always breaking down because they don't want the reputation and they don't want the embarrassment, you can always buy an aftermarket warranty on a jag, like I did, to protect yourself with any future repairs, that is something people forget especially when you buy a used car. Jaguars are absolutely gorgeous cars and better than most of the German Rivals especially those V8 supercharged ones.

Last I looked a ground up restoration with swapped out high quality parts was going for $75,000 + at auction US. Outa my ballpark for any vehicle. Been thinking about a ground up build for a 88 or so MR2 Supercharged. Not exactly an exotic but considering that I had a 86 Non Supercharged decades ago And loved it, although I had to buy the best sticky Bridgestones I could buy. Way back A salesman (Toyota) told me that the MR2 Supercharges with an Auto Box was the fasted production car from
0 - 60 at the time. Didn't believe him till later when I had it in the shop for a new battery and was reading Road and Track while waiting. Sure enough the salesman was right. I own a 2017 and will likely just drive it until it dies because it is simply a great car. I had some of the initial Jag niggles with software and a stereo issue, but all sorted long ago. They are not all perfect but if you get a good one they can last a very long time and provide a ton of driving joy.

had a xk8, loved it but the warning lights always lit up like a casino, always had a major repair every year, too many trips to the repair shop. Replaced it with an EV, not a single repair or breakdown yet. And no gas! Charge with my solar.

"cheap" is used in a manner of speaking, compared to what it costs new, and what the competition costs. I really want a Jaguar XE, the performance and styling you get for like 25 30k is pretty massive. It would cost at least another 10k to get a competitor's vehicle. So yes.. it's cheaper lol

I’ve started off with bmw then to Mercedes but thinking about going to jag. A co-worker of mine loves them and thinks I would love them too. I know little to nothing about them and been doing research and hearing bad things? Any recommendations for these type of cars? I currently own an s class and currently looking for a new toy.

Best quote I heard about Jaguars is they unfairly suffer from their old reputation the way Mercedes profits from theirs...I have an XK and could not possibly be happier with the deal I got on it, or how its performed and held up over the last few years.

@@ewiouhjohn1707 I am in the United States (New England), I bought my car sight unseen from a private party in Florida with 36K on it. I have put about 20K on it. I had to replace a rear window motor (200 bucks - but I put it in). I also had to fix a glove box hinge with epoxy (10 bucks). Previous owner of my car had duckbill and AC fan replaced (common problem - original duckbill would stop opening and cause AC condensation water to flow onto passenger floor - and ruin fan too). These cars will have electrical issues if you do not keep battery charged. Most owners use a battery tender. Not me. I can't go more than a day or two without driving it - I work from home so I do not have to drive anywhere - I just love driving it. Ford owned Jaguar for twenty years when this car was designed and built. It shows. Mine has been very reliable. If you are looking for one, make sure dash leather is not bubbling (this can be fixed - but if it has that issue consider the repair cost in your offer). The car is aluminum so it will not rust, but you can still get bubbles (again they can be fixed). Bottom line - I would buy an XK again in a heartbeat.

@@steven-ui7sz that’s all you had to do in maintenance after 20k?! That’s amazing! WhAt year did you get? And I also work from home and don’t need it for the commute but just want something I love to drive. Thank you so much for your input

Fell in love with the XE and bought one with no thought of BMW or Mercedes. In the US, it’s best to buy from Carmax because they offer a 5 yr extended warranty from the date you buy it and not from date first placed into service.
Good call on the convertible. You can really hear the pops and bangs in their full glory. They’re muffled in the quiet cabin of the coupe.

I would not buy a newer used Jaguar, but can you do the next list of half a dozen, older used vehicles that are still in decent shape and they last forever, please? For example, the 2000 to 2006 GM full-size SUV's and pick-up trucks, the 2005 to 2009 Subaru Legacy and Outback sedan and wagon, the 1997 to 2002 Ford Expedition's with the 5.4 L 2-valve V8 engine, 2003 to 2005 Dodge SX 2.0 (Neon) sedan, 2004 to 2009 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback and the 2003 to 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan and wagon. Thank you very much.
