My Love and Hate relationship with the Jaguar F-Type

- We got this 2017 Jaguar F-Type R on trade for the McLaren 650S. I have developed a love and hate relationship with the Jag. Our 2011 Jaguar F-Type S convertible was terrible and had a lot of problems. The owner of this Jag has had no problems what-so-ever. Perhaps we just got a lemon?

The F type is super reliable, beautiful, and very affordable. Great car.
Way under-appreciated.
Great review. Spot on...your renter flogged your early version....the new ones are more robust...and if adult driven (fast ...but warmed up.....)....they are exactly what you said. More than a one trick pony.
Have a 2016 AWD S...53k miles. NO issues.
Note, I was able to add wireless CarPlay/android Auto for about 450 dollars all in (installer was 100, 350 via Allie press). There are solutions out there todo this with better support (read a UK or US seller, probably same or similar parts…) for a few bucks more if one needs/wants peace of mind. It works great…and makes the 2016+ pre CarPlay F-types just as modern as I want them to be (I prefer real dials, Luddite in me I suppose). These cars will be like air cooled 911’s….people will hit themselves for not buying them in 10 years when they are all over msrp…..just think sales numbers and such. These are the cars bargains of the century.
Very cool
Same thing for me!
I have a 2018 F TYPE S AWD , *NOT A PROBLEM*
FANTASTIC CAR!!
🏆💯
As an owner of an ftype.. definitely not as reliable, however still an absolute bargain and sound incredible, I have a v6S and I can’t stop thinking of how good of a car it is!
Yep, I have owned a 2014 V8S convertible for the past 4 years as a daily driver. The car lives outside all year and has been totally reliable, having covered almost 70, 000 miles. Driven properly and maintained correctly these cars are as good as anything else on the road, and in addition have looks, character and a wee bit of the soul of an E-Type. In 45+ years of driving I have owned many cars including 5 other Jags, the F-Type is the best of them all and will be the last car I ever buy.
Sounds like a lot of excuses on why this is actually unreliable.
I have a 2017 in the same color. AWD for New England just in case. It is so much fun to drive! I’ve had it for 16 months and I have had no issues except the battery problem mentioned. If you can pick one up, you will not regret it.
Nice!
Sounds Bonkers !!!!
Hey guys, great review of the F Type. I have a 2015 and have been very impressed with it, drove Porsches forever and the looks of the F Type blew me away. Not many issues, get a lot of looks, keep up the good work
Thanks
Dan, now you’re an excellent car reviewer , well done.
Great videos.
Thanks!
I owned a 2016 R for two years and had done like 20+ track days with the car. It never had any issues even with my use case. I think maybe they fixed most of the issues on later models. 2016 and ups are very different from earlier ones.
Getting one this summer. Do you recommend the 15’ RWD or the 16 AWD
P.s how much miles did yours have. And what mile range should I aim for
@@Young_king888 I’d say get a 16 R. The 16 has upgraded infotainment and gauge displays. The AWD is also a great improvement for daily uses, especially in the rains. And I think 10k to 20k miles would be a sweet spot if you can find one since the car has been driven and yet not driven a lot.
I had mine from 10k miles to 23k miles within my 2 years of ownership.
Nice
Gorgeous spec !!....they did a great job integrating the wing into the body....didn't realize it had a wing, i thought the trunk opened on you as you were driving...lol...
I forgot it had one until I saw the button for it.
I'm on my 2nd f type. I had a 2015 R and now a 2017 SVR. It's a very underrated car. I love mines so much. The earlier cars had a coolant Y pipe issue. They were prone to cracking. Jag has since remedied the issue with a new part. The obdll issue is if you plug in a reader and either leave it plug in, or you didn't exit out correctly and removed the reader. It will continue to drain the battery. If you exit out the reader and remove it correctly it doesn't drain.
Yup
How do you like your SVR? I’m thinking of trading in my Supra for one.
I have a V6 2014. Love it. 0 problems.
Dan, great video! I've always loved these cars. Can you tell me what your mic setup is for the outside shots? The audio was really clear with no wind noise.
It's a rode videomic pro on a mount with a gopro.
I’ve got a 2019 F-Type R- Dynamic I absolutely love it, very reliable, fun to drive, looks great in British racing green. If I had 1 tiny complaint it’s the very plain interior. I had an Aston Martin DB9 and a Toyota Supra previously and both had much nicer interiors, but this car is so very quick and just a beast 0-60. I highly recommend them.
I suppose the interior could use a little pizzazz
@@normalguysupercar the SVR had a deluxe interior that was a definite upgrade, good video btw, you smile just like me when I press that start button.
Always look forward to seeing reviews of different cars
Glad you like them!
Man I miss seeing loeper in the vids. I have a 2012 XJ and it's been fairly reliable. Once it had failed injectors, Sticky buttons and the speakers like to burst. And one time the fuse popped for the obd port (easy fix). Love the red on yours and the newest f types are even classier looking.
Yeah I really like these cars.
If warranty was available I would definitely buy these. Definitely one of the best exhaust notes
You can get aftermarket warranties
Jags CPO is 7Y/100K miles. I had one. I got a replacement battery out of it before it timed out. Which, ironically, was a wear and tear item, technically not covered.
We bought the Doug DeMuro warranty a la CarMax for 5 Years
I now have the F Pace, Dan and love it. Doesn't have the performance of a supercar, but it does have that quality touch.
It's a fun car for sure
F-type is a great under-appreciated car.....but if we reeeeeeeally want to talk about great under-appreciated Jags, the one to buy is an XKR (or XKRS). Basically the same performance as the F-type, over 500hp, amazing exhaust, beautiful looks, two extra seats for your stuff (and cheaper insurance), the most reliable Jag ever made, annnnnnnnnnd all at like a third of the price of the F-type. They can be had in the 20's! I'm strongly considering picking one up.
That's true.
@@normalguysupercar I have a 2010 XKR, stock 510hp. Cost $30k Cdn. Car is mint, beaut. Styling it IS the G.T. to buy! Love the ‘F’s’ also but the XK is even more comfy….love them all!😎🇨🇦
I have owned 2 XKRs, an X100 and an X150. Both lovely cars, but to me the F-Type I now own is a better car, for my lifestyle and needs anyway.
As a long time 2016 owner, I’m Confirming the odb port issue you mentioned. Anytime you use the port, you pull the battery for 30 seconds and reconnect. otherwise the battery will die
Yup
I love my 2014 V8S. I have had it for two years and have not had a problem yet. I even tuned it to 605hp crank, so much fun
Nice!
@@normalguysupercar when are we going to get a Megs Apathetic Car review on the Jag?
Watching this video in Newark airport on my way to pick up my new to me ‘15 R I’m Ohio. Looking forward to the drive home. Yes!
Nice congrats!
I have a '17 F type R convertible and I love it. Sometimes when I drive it I forget its appeal and I find myself briefly surprised as people point it out. I had one guy who just completely stopped coming toward me, waved me down just to say "beautiful car!" BTW, I don't know if the reviewer was talking about buying his specific used car for $68K, but a new one will cost you more like $120+K.
Right on!
Mo airbrake, lol (09:00). All stock.
Love the f-type design too. Jaguar has really kept its style across the lineup.
Yes, I like the look
I plan keeping my 2017 R Jaguar Forever! Great all around classic sports car!!!
Nice
"Hello one and all welcome to Normal Guy Supercar" this car reminds me of STG Sams old F type R, same colour
AH yeah.
Your first F-Type had a bad (Bosch, not Jag) fuel injector. My 2014 V8 has had ZERO repairs. It’s been tuned to 700HP with a double-pulley since 20K miles. These cars are generally bullet proof, and have always been bullet proof.
Nice
Awesome review Dan! When you make it to Nashville… lets review the Project8
Ok
I rented a convertible in LA three months ago. Loved everything, except no room for my freaking luggage - had to put it on the passenger seat.
Yeah, the trunk on the convertible is a joke.
Jaguar and Ferrari are the same type of ownership . You are willing to put up with the imperfections and problems for the sheer driving experience . A plus is the beautiful styling. Beautiful car ✌️
what imperfections with the ferrari? ;)
@@odee9007 oh I forgot Ferrari has no problems as a Honda 😹
@@shovel_head80 that’s honestly pretty true of the modern ones hahahaha
Honestly modern Ferraris are pretty damn reliable.
7:05 I really missed a "rally bitches!!!" at this point hahaha! Those crackles... it´s like popcorn is ready! Awesome car and beautiful review. Thanks Dan!
LOL me too.
Where's Loeper been?
Just swapped my 6 cylinder for a 8 cylinder R convertible and I love it ❤❤
Nice
I enjoy your honesty, on all the cars you are selling. Have you thought about buying, improving a c3 corvette,They are inexpensive, easy to find, and still very popular.lol Russell Wayne Boyd.
Probably not for a C3. I don't know enough about them
Love my 2016 R coupe. I purchased it last year and had it modified. No issues with reliability so far…the supersprint race exhaust for the R is insane 😊
The exhaust is pretty damn amazing
How tall are you? I'm worried I won't fit in a 17 at 6'4
Looks awesome!
Thanks
very nice Dan and priced right too
Thanks
F type R owner, only an O2 sensor replacement so far, otherwise faultless, but they require proper skilled knowledgeable maintenance. Ownership surveys indicate that it's a pretty reliable car.
That's good to hear.
im still loving my 09 XK but plan on an F Type very soon... love that color Brother.... im 6"2 and am worried about the legroom ....
I think you'll fit but not super well
crackling sound... such a child lol.... but its such a bloody nice car!!!! Ijust watched this video and your F430 video and in this video, you are smiling. why, because it gives you the fizz. and that is what counts, getting the smile!
Lol yup
Dan, do you plan to get another supercar of your own any time soon? One to keep long term like the 458?
Not any time soon.
Damn you Dan! Love the 420 part
LOL
Good looking garage!!
Thanks!
What do you think about winter driving these cars/daily driving?
Eh I suppose maybe with the AWD and proper winter tires
Great vid. How tall are you ? Im concerned about legroom at 6'4
5'9"
What is so bad about it? That it doesn’t go wrong or let you down on the roadside like Audis and BMW’s do? It’s super reliable and has been my daily driver for 4 years without issue.
OK
I'm looking to get a 2014 or 2015 S or R Ftype V8. I hear the exhaust sound is way better in these older versions then the newer one and have little problems if properly maintained.
I can't confirm the exhaust difference, but it is pretty damn good
@@normalguysupercar There's software in the newer Jags that dampens the exhaust. I think it for more reliability since there can be minor issues that pop up sometimes.
Yep… you hooked me on this… lets watch.
Haha
How does a modern car overheat? My 911 has been at numerous track days in the middle of summer, 100 degree days and never overheated.
Head gasket, coolant system failed, leaking coolant
I remember the Jag developing a problem at the Influencer Invasion.
Yuuup
I own one, Exhaust does sound good but when compared to my 2013 Maserati Gran Turismo sport exhaust, well the Jaguar factory exhaust can’t touch my Maserati GTS factory exhaust sound.
Hmm, yea the Masi does sound good too.
Not even close. The Ftype R sounds way better. The crackles and pops are untouchable
@@chetperry3384 good question. Honestly I think the Maserati Italian leather is better and more comfortable and I Certainly think the exterior Pininfarina design is much better looking compared to the Jaguar. Also I think the Maserati performance is better and the steering is tighter. If you can’t tell, I think the Maserati all around is a better car in my opinion.
My neighbor had a Maserati GT. I think they sound equally good.
I was on the fence between buying a Maserati GranTurismo or the F type. That flat-plane crank Ferrari engine in the Maserati has an incredible sound for sure and the car is beautiful. But…I went for an F type S. The car is beyond beautiful, sounds pretty darn good, is comfortable, and the tech is better. And way less money.
F-Type is an amazing car!! 🔥🔥🔥🤟🏽
Yes it is
How do you compare this to the Maserati GT?
I like this more.
I bought a 2015 R a few months ago and no regerts - I think you got a bad example sir. Doesn't sound like this car had the ECU update that removes the pops and bangs too. Dan - if you wanted to do the buyer a favor, let them know about changing the e-diff fluids in the next year or two. I replaced my rear in the 2015 with 15K miles and it was nasttttty.
Perhaps do
Perhaps do
@@normalguysupercar it’s a PITA to refill but doable with the right extensions. Check out Skrrt Garage’s page for how to.
Thee most underrated sports car around!
Indeed
What does 'ppf' mean?
The car overheated because you rented a 500hp car to a kid who didn’t treat it well. The only way that happens if if you drive it like it’s on a track and then immediately turn off the engine. All that latent heat is stuck in the y-pipe and the pumps aren’t moving it to the radiator. The kid cooked your cooling system. I’ve seen it before on the track where a driver doesn’t do a cooldown lap or at least let the car idle for a while. It’s a little disingenuous to rent out a high performance car and then say it’s not reliable because it has a history of being abused.
Cool
Dan we will not be selling McLarens or Jags at the dealership…😂
LOL yeah... short lived.
The most beautiful sports car around.
They are badass
6:10 LOL I honestly think my LC500 sounds JUST as good as the FType but I would agree its one of THE best sounding cars off a production line. I smoked a black FType, boy didn't know how to drive it, I'm sure if I were driving both cars the Jag would win but hey that's what happens when you play with men... didn't mean that to rhym.
Lol
If you were racing any V8 variant with AWD - it was driver error for sure.
R35 Gtr vs Ftype which is better?
No idea
Ah yes my dream car love the jaguar f-type r
They are cool
LOL @ your prices
Might as well have some fun with it
@@normalguysupercar *imitates Dan: "Nice."
When you let off the throttle it sounds like toilet flushing.
Hmm... I don't get that but ok.
You really can’t compare to a 430, or even a 488. The Jag is inexpensive enough to allow no worries slapping a ridiculously easy $1200, 700HP / 650 ft-lb 2 hour DIY pulley or two (+$200), and the ZF8 can easily handle it, as can the RR suspension and brakes.
You can also add a ZF8 tune that’s the weirdest thing you have ever driven. It gives you a full tranny in every gear by adjusting clamping power. If you floor it it sticks at max torque and the gears increment without RPM change. I hate it, but it shaves 0.4 secs off the quarter.
True
Problem with F type, sounds like Centurion tank going down the street.
Haha
What is the story with the VINWiki and other stickers? Is this a RUclipsrs car?
It's Tyler's car, the one on Dan's live stream.
He just likes Vinwiki.
I can’t stand Winwiki, he screwed Tyler on the Lamborghini he sold him a couple years back
I owned a 2017 awd R for about 2 years and had zero issues with it.
Absolutely loved it.
Nice
Nice. Why did u get rid of it?
I would have kept it, but the used car prices have gone way up and I figured that wont last forever so I sold my F-Type for more then when I had purchased the vehicle.
@@Briannaf57 Sounds good. I bought a 2015 R about a year ago. 40k miles. I barley drive it. My daily drive is my 2015 RR. What are u going to get to replace the thrill?
@@bigesmalls41 Im not sure at the moment with everything being overpriced but I am kind of leaning towards the new Mercedes SL63 AMG.
Beautiful car and beautiful sound that my Girlfriend has always liked!👍👍Now she loves my Ferrari California much more! Especially cruising with the top down!👍👍😎🏎 Happy Lover = Happy Life!😘😍❤️
Yes indeed.
Aren’t people over pointless, programmed exhaust pops and crackles? Handy for annoying your neighbors I suppose.
Yes.
No, I love them.
They’re fun, but they’ll ruin your cats over time. Jag actually issued a software update that tones them down to preserve the cats. Enthusiasts generally avoid that update and just accept that someday they will need to replace the cats.
NO.
@@silentstormstudios 100%… they also lost a lawsuit and issued super extended warranties on the entire exhaust system from the manifold back. I received a letter like two years ago for my 2016
Do not drive these cars hard then turn the engine off, let it run a little and cool down.
Use - Mannol Fully Synthetic 0W-20 Engine Oil Legend Ultra Longlife GM DEXOS 1 @ £50 for 10 liters rather than £38/liter from Jaguar and change the oil at least every 5,000 miles
Good tips
Get an Alfa 4c in!
Probably at some point
The exhaust sounds great when you're on throttle; but those pops and crackles are awful; I cannot stand them
LOL You are in the minority there. The car is well known for its crackles and pops
I love those.
for 69k...where?? here in western europe, they all go for 85-120k it's insane
This was years ago
@@normalguysupercar it's crazy how they went up that high since then, since they only got older 😅 was looking to buy a 2017-2018 type r, but the way the prices are right now...not sure about it anymore haha
I bought my 2015 R with under 17k miles last summer for $56k. But that was from a used luxury car dealer. The regularly go at auction for under $50k. One of the best bargains out there.
R English abbreviation for Rubbish. I drove one of these when I was considering AMG GT, SLS and AMG GTR it was not a patch on the Mercedes but it was cheaper.
LOL
So what did you buy ? I'm thinking of changing...
@@ashleylee5445 the SLS AMG it was the one I really wanted. The AMG GTR was a close second but it was too low for what I use the car for and I think my money is safer in the SLS long term. What are you thinking about?
@@jamesbambury That's some machine. I'm thinking AMG GT that's as far as my budget will stretch. But I've yet to try one.
Would you consider this F-type a supercar? Why/why not?
No, it's more a grand tourer
Been wondering about these as my M4 got smashed by an idiot. Gotta find something in that $60-100k range 😒
It is more theatrical than the m4. You should test drive one
You could pick up ours. :)

Yeah oops
When that spoiler popped up, I suddenly lost some, not all, respect for Tyler. I have the same love/hate relationship as well with these cars. These are beautiful cars. From a looks standpoint, Jag it the ball out of the park. From a reliability standpoint, just no.

Never buy a jag if you plan on putting a lot of miles on it.
British cars are horrible!
Eh, I think they are better if you drive them regularly.
Any car is horrible if you treat it like crap and any car is reliable if you treat it good.
This is old thinking. Modern Jags, like most modern cars, are as reliable as anything else. With a car like this, you have to treat it well and maintain it correctly. These are actually quite good cars, especially given the performance level.
