More like the 2019 offseason. Jarmo's all-in push completely kneecapped the team's long-term viability, as it saw many of its best players walking for absolutely nothing. Hilarious as sweeping the record regular season Lightning was, I think virtually everyone would agree that it wasn't worth the pain and misery that's followed. The CBJ should definitely have been sellers that season knowing what was just around the corner - they could have gotten a solid haul for Panarin and Bobrovsky that would have set them up nicely for the near future.

Yeah, the thing that kept Jarmo in was how well (on paper) he could build a team and what got him fired was how badly those did get him fired. I mean I look at what he leaves for the next person to GM for them like this; trade deadline - don't really NEED to make moves as this team has good pieces already. The draft position is decent. You have 12M cap space. Ok, you have a ton of RFA's to deal. 3 UFA's of which 1 you need to somehow deal with. You have 6 contract slots. You don't need to fully blow up with this, but you have all the options for restructuring available. You could keep some kind of core around and tinker. I've been saying for about five years that the problem with the Blue Jackets has very little to do with either management or the players currently on the team. The problem is that it is a franchise that the majority of NHL-level players do not want to play for. That would include good players and the not-so-good. Some players will bite the bullet and sign with the Jackets because the team gave them the best offer. They did not sign because they really want to play in Columbus, for the Jackets. In other words, the Jackets were a long way from their first choice, all else being equal. *_That_* reality has to change or the Jackets will never field a truly elite team. I'm not sure how to go about making that change.

Tim your view here is just crazy. Management can force a good player to come by drafting them or trading for them. Some player can still refuse after this point but most will not. You can STILL make an NHL team very good doing only that even if it was common knowledge most players would never want to come there.
Giving Johnny that bad contract on purpose hurt the team and he obviously wanted to come enough to sign it even if it was not his first choice. The Jackets would have been better off not paying Johnny anything and using his cap to improve the whole roster.

MTL got 2 firsts trading their cap room instead of spending their cap on a player they liked who would probably not add enough wins to matter.

To be fair, to your point about CBJ never really "having a championship direction established" I think that's a tad over-simplified. but yes, fairly accurate. I believe (and people forget) that CBJ were much, much, closer to being a true Stanley Cup contender in those 2017-2019 years. In '16-'17 they lost to PIT, the eventual Stanley Cup Champ (only lasted 5 games, so not that close. Point taken). But in '17-'18 They lost to the Caps who YET AGAIN, were the eventual Stanley Cup champ that year (lost in 6 games after being up 2-0!). The '18-'19 year was a championship caliber team, honestly IMO. Obviously they swept the record setting Lightning, and then hung in a tough series with the Bruins for 6 games (Ok so the Bruins didn't win the Cup that year, but they made it to game 7 off the Stanley Cup Final vs the Blues!). All of this is to say, in retrospect, I think people underestimate how close CBJ actually were in some of those Jarmo years. They really did have a great roster...Panarin, Atkinson, DuBois, Anderson, Duschene, Bjorkstrand, Foligno, Jenner, Wennberg, Werenski, Jones, Savard, Murray, Bob/Korpi in net....That was a damn good team.
