Quite funny how in the West people use Zodiac signs, mainly inspired by eastern astronomy/science, for their esoterical beliefs, while Japanese people or "in the East" they use bloodtypes, inspired by western science, for theirs.
I remember setting up the weather channel in Mario and Sonic and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. It proceeded to never snow again because I live in Florida. I didn't notice, I still thought it was the coolest thing ever
I remember when I finally convinced my Dad it was safe to have our own wifi network at home, one of the first things I connected to was the Wii weather channel. I thought it was so cool to spin the globe around and look at different cities local weather. Simpler times…
When I played New Horizons I would always think "it would be cool if the actual irl weather was copied" and then I remember I live in Ireland and it would just be raining all the time, this is still such a cool feature though and I'd love to see it implemented nowadays
Animal Crossing with real life weather would go so hard, specially if you could change location depending on what type of weather you never get (snowy in my case)
While that would be absolutely awesome, there's also an element of you won't be able to experience all the seasons/weather, therefore be unable to collect season/weather specific bugs and fish
This is a feature i always dreamed would exist once games started using real time clocks sad we kinda moved away from both outside of a handful of rare games
I can't include a link because of RUclips's rules but in the Animal Crossing City Folk Iwata Asks on page 5 they talk about how they wanted to include real-life weather but decided against it - "I really wanted to make it so that you could see the sky changing in different places. I even thought of somehow linking it to the Weather Channel, but unfortunately I wasn't able to follow this through. I researched the climate in each country, but you had places where hardly any rain fell, on the one hand, and then other places where it poured for most of the year."
I remember playing NiGHTS JoD on rainy days so I could get water to flood a crater that sometimes formed in the ground in My Dream, thus making a little swimming hole
I remember reading on a gaming magazine (yeah, remember those?) that the Weather Channel could be used to mimick real-life weather into games but I kind of forgot about it. Glad to see it was actually a feature. 7:34 In Japan, it's believed that your blood type affects your persoanlity. It's like a zodiac sign or an MBTI personality type.
I know what games you're talking about! The Madden, Tiger Woods, Fifa, and the NCAA Football games from I think 09-13 used TWCs broadcasts through the EA servers (sadly since discontinued, at least officially 😉) to imitate real life weather. If you wanted to play out Steelers-Bengals with the weather from March in Pittsburgh, you actually could. Far and away one of the more immersive things those games have done. Edit: For clarifying, I own FIFA 11, Tiger 11-13, Madden 13, and NCAA Football 10 from this list.
I wish more games did this, I think it's really neat! If I remember right, A-Life in NiGHTS Journey of Dreams and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 actually originated in NiGHTS Into Dreams. It was much less complex than what ultimately was used for the Chao, but basic behaviors like how the Nightopians react to you and interact with each other were managed by the system. It was surprisingly advanced for the time and still is an impressive feat!💖
Oh, and Wii Room asking for your blood type isn't all that strange. In some aspects of Japanese culture determining someone's luck or fortune on a given day used one's birthday and blood type. That's why (especially in Japanese media from the 80s and 90s) characters would give their blood type along with talking about themselves. Other than than just being for fun fortune-telling, it can be helpful knowing your blood type in the case of emergencies.
I remembered around in the early 2010s, I was playing around with the Wii Forecast channel in M&S Olympic Winter Games. At one point, it was raining at my location, and actually happens in-game.
I appreciate there actually being something in this video that everyone didn't already know. Like "Sonic the Hedgehog was released in 1991 for the Sega Master System also known as the Sega Genesis in the west." or "Did you know Super Mario Bros 2 is ACTUALLY Doki Doki Panic?!"
I remember my Mum asking me whether Animal Crossing used the weather forecast. It seems like such an obvious use, shame it didn't. …Btw, did that aquarium game you showed seriously get a sequel?! HOW?!? AND WHY? WHYYYYY
7:31 Japan fell really hard for a puesdoscience about blood type determining your personality, similar to zodiac signs. A western equivalent here would be a game asking for your birthday and then caculating your zodiac sign from it. This is also why blood type is listed on the profiles of most anime or manga characters.
I love this concept, I used to google the weather at the specific stadium before every game in MLB The Show to determine what time and weather I played in lol, makes it a little more fun than just picking random
my partner adores the my aquarium series, i set it up on dolphin for them to muck around it and it's their favourite! surprised i never knew about that.
As someone who grew up on the Mario and Sonic Olympics, mostly the 2010 and 2012 ones (although I also did 2014, 16, and briefly the DS version of 08), never expected there to be a connection of the Wii Forecast Channel and it. Fun Fact. The DS version of Vancouver also has a smaller version of a forecast option.
Yeah I'm with ya, I'd love more integration like this. I also would really love more real time clocks in games. I love in gen 2 Pokemon when it gets dark in real life, the game gets dark too and yellow light pools out from the monochrome blue buildings in towns. Or in World of Warcraft when night time hits, it just changes the feel of the whole area. Throw in some weather with that and baby you got yourself a stew!
I know they are not Wii games, but Project CARS 1 & 2 (don´t know about the 3rd one) have this type of feature too. For any race you create, you can select the "Real Weather" Option and the game do just that: Set the ingame weather to whatever weather the current, real life location has.
I'm not the only one who checks out the settings menu first thing upon playing a new game, right? (potentially after listening to the title screen music) I did not know about this feature before seeing the video; it's quite cool, though!
WHAAAAAAAAT? That's my dream feature and I missed this? I love this kinda stuff. Maaaaan...I really hope Nintendo will do quirky stuff like this with the switch 2..
I spent soooo much time with My Aquarium as a teen, man. But I don't remember this feature...pretty cool! NGL this series of vids has really been motivating me to rearrange my apartment and finally get out my old consoles again, so thank you for that!!
Fun Fact: The little guys with the halos (Nightopians) in NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams were SEGA's first crack at making Artificial Life in the original NiGHTS into Dreams. They would later become the main inspiration for the Chao and the Chao Garden
I think I remember the topic of Animal Crossing using the Forecast Channel came up back when the game came out and Nintendo said they chose not to implement it because they wouldn't want people who never get snow or the weather is the same where they live year round to miss out but, man, that's why it should have been an optional feature!
Wow. I legitimately thought I knew about all of the Wii's features. I even knew about the SD card music thing. But I had no idea that games could work with the Forecast Channel. That's really cool
Fun fact, the Off-brand Chao in Nights into Dreams are called Nightopians, and were the predecessors to SA's Chao Garden as the A-Life system that Chaos use originated in the first Nights into Dreams game's Nightopians.
I remember on christmas 2006 living in the tropics and seeing how cold it was the more to the north you went. Really wanted a white christmas here haha.
In middle school, my friends made fun of me for being excited for the Forecast and News channels. There's a pretty good picture of us all doing thumbs up in front of a CRT with the News Channel on.
It’s an amazing feature I didn’t even know about since I never owned any of the games that featured it but I guess I would not have ever used it as I’m Spanish and it would always be sunny, not very exciting 😅 Animal Crossing requires rain for certain fish and bugs for example, it would have to change the way the game works for it to be well implemented, but I’ve always thought about that. Great video!
I honestly cherish the fact that Animal Crossing’s weather has never been beholden to the actual weather irl, it helps enhance the feeling that it’s an escape from reality. That said, City Folk not having an option to sync the weather to the forecast channel when freaking TIGER WOODS did is kind of shameful lol
Animal crossing would've been so cool with the weather channel! It definitely would've caused some problems with the whole winter system they have, but it still would've been cool since they already use the clock
Hahaha I love how Mario Wonder is in your theater. Across all Nintendo Home consoles, I still love the Wii the most 💙 (despite my parents never letting me own one 😢)
My needless pipe dream for Switch 2 is that they bring back some sort of weather awareness and work it into the menu - just charming little things like a symbol that shows the current weather, or a little menu concierge that makes pop up comments like ‘wow, sure is snowy today!’ Like gimme that Nintendo charm back pleeease
Imagine if Animal Crossing City Folk used the forecast channel. It would restrict all the seasonal features and items if it did, like no snowman or winter items for the southern states where it hardly snows, as far as I know. Unless you change your location of course. So I'm glad they didn't implement it.
Wii connect 24 fried quite a few launch model Wiis because the fan didnt spin while it was in sleep mode. Later models had a better wifi adapter that didn't cook the system iirc.
I know some areas of the world don't get certain weather, but won't it be sad if one day we don't get snow anymore? Imagine a change in environment and snow is just a relic of the past, experienceable only through legacy media. That's a sad thought. Imagine playing Animal Crossing on the Wii in the future, and in-game it's winter and snowing, and someone who's never experienced it is like, "I wonder what this (snowing) must have felt like?"
This was a very pleasant and interesting upload to stumble upon thank you for posting it online! I have heard blood types are kinda a big deal in Japan and are kinda treated like horoscopes in some days? Although my knowledge on this is extremely minimal. Also it feels like your webcam is a little too close, but I am extremely drunk while watching this video so it might just be a weird 'me' thing. It turns out I also watched your SD card music video recently. Again thank you so much for the uploads, I look forward to all your future content!
It's neat, but a lot of games have tailored experiences, and random weather might have disrupted that. Say, in Animal Crossing, having some things only available in Wonter when it's snowing would have been a pain if it was mandatory to the Forecast channel.
I was also very disappointed that Animal Crossing did't use the forecast channel. I had Nights but I never found the part where the weather channel had effect so I was very confused because it was not raining in the game when it was raining outside, etc. A game where every level would have a weather channel effect would have been nice.
If this functionality was on the DS, or if mainline Pokémon games had come out on wii, you KNOW Pokémon would have used this. I mean cmon these guys made a Pokémon the you can only catch on Friday just because the ds calendar meant they could, they lived for this kind of thing in that era.
if some modders know what they are doing. it would be really cool to make a channel/game that uses it as a gameplay mechanic. idk how but it would be cool
Pretty cool. Animal Crossing & Wii Sports Resort should have. It took racing games years (move over GT7 & others of the genre these days) to do this but the Wii did in particular ones. Some Devs don't try hard enough. Wii Room, Golf, the Bear anime. Sega wdid great with GBA minigames, PSP cross save (Outrun 2006 PS2/PSP) to Wii Forecast. Fish tank. Move over GT7 and other racing sims with their weather Mario & Sonic and more games have forecast channel weather effects years before you.
The Wii saga of videos is amazing. One day Jon will explain how some weird chinesse party game used the Wii Speak or something. I'm not surprised at this point
So as a few below have said Animal Crossing would not work with real weather... if it reflects in your main town, because weather is a function of the game there. but it would still be cool if it reflects in special areas you can visit that would not be functionally affected, just visually like these games are. maybe nintendo can implement that in pocket camp?
NiGHTS Journey of Dreams is fantastic! Gameplay wise it isn't as good as the original unfortunately- it focuses less on racking up points to get a high score and more speeding through levels, which is a bit of a downgrade, and the game has a lot of other smaller missions unrelated to that gameplay bloating it out. But it also tries harder to tell a proper story compared to the original, and while it isn't always pretty I think there's a charm to it. Like, I LOVE the visual themes of each area, how they actually explain what the dreams symbolize- I ADORE the mystique of the Dream Gate and the more down to earth style for the kids that make them feel more relatable. It's a diamond in the rough, something many people will pass on for its flaws, but if you're patient and don't mind the imperfections, there's a lot to love. It's a game you can tell the developers put a lot of love and care into, made even more obvious by the sheer amount of times this game and the original are referenced in other games by Sonic Team. I'd say the way it's flawed but has a charm to it is comparable to a lot of Sonic Team games of that era, except since it doesn't have the Sonic brand attached to it, its fanbase is a bit more niche.
I got along a lot better with Journey of Dreams as it let me get straight back into retrying a level instead of just dropping me on the floor and expecting me to tediously wander around and pick up the pieces of my failed attempt while an angry alarm clock chased me, and depriving me of the opportunity to have fun flying around on that section again without completely restarting the level if I completed it while on the ground, which obviously is still the goal while on the ground.
Imagine if there were games that used the news channel. If you played animal crossing and the news was war, your villagers would be all paranoid about war. Mostly a joke.
Are you sure the weather changed in the games section of Mario and Sonic? I thought it only changed in the Olympic village! Though my memory may betray me

7:31 fun fact: in japanese culture, people’s blood types are used similarly to zodiac signs, so that’s why it’s asking you for your blood type

Fire Emblem 7 also asks you for your blood type in the Japanese version, which was removed in the west

Also I can't possibly relate to that "snow" thing living where I live (in the smack middle of Brazil)
Loving Jon’s decent into “Wii”
Jon’s wife gotta watch out for competition with that Forecast Channel
4:09 Heyo!!! Live action bit! 🎉
Be interesting to see how you react to collecting all the tear things in NiGHTS. The one in the bootleg chao garden will take some time.
the first day I got Animal Crossing the weather happened to match so I thought it was taking from the forecast channel but nope, just a coincidence :(
This is so weird and cool, I had no idea about this
I always wished Animal Crossing would do this.
I wish this was a feature in animal crossing. It would be so cool if it was raining in real life and on my island/town
Arg. Your videos make me miss my wii... Sold it a while ago.
Imagine if there were games that used the news channel. If you played animal crossing and the news was war, your villagers would be all paranoid about war.
Mostly a joke.
The Wii was truly a wonderful console
Are you sure the weather changed in the games section of Mario and Sonic? I thought it only changed in the Olympic village! Though my memory may betray me
Yep, animal crossing should use our local forecast even on Switch :)
