Thank you for making this video. My tesla usb drive corrupted in the middle of my road trip. The Bestbuy near by only has the Scan Disk SSD in-stock, your video had saved me.

I am just about ready to pull the trigger on a new Model Y LR. I noticed that some of the owners partitioned their hard drives creating a main folder for their Sentry mode files and another folder for music and even sub folders for albums where you can store you favorite music from your CD collection or other MP3 music files. You can even play the music in random order if you desire. Just another nice feature that Tesla offers.

Thanks for sharing! That’s a pretty awesome feature. We used to have a pretty large collection of music, but Spotify has made it so easy that we haven’t kept it updated. Would be interested to know if there is a difference in quality versus the built in car app vs the files the car could play off the drive. May have to explore that some more. Thanks for watching!

What a great video. I use your stuff almost exclusively for my MY BUT I have a 2022. So help me, I installed the SanDisk and it runs warm to hot to the touch almost always, while sitting in the glove box. Bad unit? It’s the way it is. Your input would be valuable to me. Nice overview. What happen if the Dashcam is icon is greyed (no red light)? I had issue when the red light on the Dashcam would be lit when car is parked in garage. But when I start driving around, the red light is no longer on. The Dashcam icon is there but greyed out. I tried clicking on it but nothing happens. Upon returning to the garage, the red light would come back on.
I just took delivery of my Model Y but I’m confused. Right now I have to turn Sentry Mode on each time I exit my vehicle. Is there a way for Sentry Mode to turn on automatically whenever I park?

Hey JQ, question for you. I turned off sentry mode on my phone in the morning and It seems like I lost the events that transpired throughout the night. If I turn it off like I did does it erase everything or should the events still be there?

Nice tutorial JQ!! Friendly advice if you use USB-C port to USB-A cable it will decrease the read and write speed of your drive. If possible use a different port other than glove box with the USB-C to USB-C cable for full speed :)
Thanks for the advice! We left it in the glove box in the rare chance the car is broken into that way the person won’t be able to steal the drive with the evidence. It’s unfortunate we won’t get the full specs of the drive, but worth the security and way better than the original flash drive. Thanks again!

If the footage overwrites itself does it keep the data longer with the larger drive?
The drive has several folders. One is “Recent Clips” which has the hour long loop which overwrites itself. The footage in this is temporary as it continually overwrites. The second is “Sentry Clips” with the sentry footage of every event it captures. As the drive gets full, these also are overwritten. Last is “Saved Clips” from either honking or clicking save. These don’t ever get overwritten. So with a larger and faster drive you shouldn’t have as many errors with saving footage. Thanks for watching!
Great video! I'm thinking about picking up that Sandisk external SSD drive as well. Can you plug the drive into a PC and view the footage as well?
Yes you can! That’s what’s awesome about this drive. Once we eject the drive from the car, we actually leave the cable in the car but take the drive and use the other USB-C to USB-C to connect to our computers. Pretty awesome option by Tesla!

What happens if your unconscious? How will u save the video then?
Auto mode says it record if airbag is triggered or accident so I think it will record if that were to happen..
Why ssd? I can use the regular external hard drive

I just picked up my car yesterday 😊. I plan on putting a dark tint on the windows. Do you know if this will compromise the effectiveness of the sentry mode? I realize the cameras are mounted externally, but are the sensors that trigger them inside of the cabin? I just wanna make sure that I'm not gonna mess anything up.
The camera are not in the door. So it's ok to put tint
Not sure if I missed, can you set it “record all the time”, including all driving and parking?
The car is always recording (as long as a flash drive / hard drive is plugged in). The only issue is that the saved footage is in a temporary folder that is being overwritten every hour. What we’ve read is that sometimes someone gets in an accident and in the moment doesn’t realize they let too much time pass, get out of the car, drive home, etc and never click save and by the time they take the drive out it’s overwritten. When you honk or click save, it goes into a different folder on the drive. To make sure it always records while parked, just enable sentry mode. Thanks for watching!

Just curious why the sandisk over the samsung T7 ssd?
We chose the Sandisk primarily because we use a lot of Sandisk (memory cards), G-Technology (RAID drives for photo/video editing), etc. products and have found them to be high-performing "Prosumer" grade. The Samsung T7 looks like it's a great drive as well. Eventually, we would like to try the next gen 2,000MB/s SSD drives, but the 1,050MB/s is more than enough for Sentry Mode :)
What size did you get? 500gb or 1TB?
We got the 500GB and it's still not full yet after 8 months of owning the car. If we wanted to use the hard drive for car music storage or special boombox sounds the 1TB might be worth it. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!
Have you noticed that ssd getting super hot sometimes?! After fist night I touched mine and it was burning hot? May swap out for Samsung one???

On extended road trips, greater than several hours we have noticed it gets warm, but never alarmingly hot. While the car is constantly overwriting the dashcam video loops, the drive is rated for 113°F (45°C) operating temperature and 158°F (70°C) storage temperature so it should be capable of handling most activity. This was one of the main reasons we chose this drive in addition to the write speeds. We don't keep anything in the glove box, but maybe there are some storage options that will help keep the drive suspended to have more airflow. I bought the sandisk drive on amazon from your affiliate link. The drive in the car is hot. It concerns me how hot it is. Does yours get hot or that warm?

@@JQLouise I put the Tesla's thumb stick back in. I noticed that my sentry isn't even capturing events.. I get the message on the screen of events, but no footage to view..
SSD drives aren't really designed for this use case unfortunately. They all tend to get hot. I'm doing research but it seems the best drive is one with a controller designed for sustained constant use recording.

128 drive is not enough storage?
128GB is a good amount of storage, but we found the drive was already starting to fill up (10 min x 4 cameras) every time we honked (whether it was an incident or not). We mainly wanted the better write speeds and a more durable drive, and the 500GB was a nice benefit of that. Thanks for watching!
I bought the same but the Sentry Mode eats up your battery fast
Sentry does use about 7% of battery a day if the car is running it 24/7. When we went to NYC the other week, we used about 20% with the car sitting in a garage. Not the greatest, but unfortunately the entire car's computer system needs to be on for Sentry to work. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I need help I brought this product and could not get it to work I plugged it in and did the reformating And it did not work I plugged back in Is the factory stick and everything came right back on.
Did you use the car to reformat the drive or a computer? Does a computer recognize the hard drive? These are very well made drives but there could be a chance it's defective. Hope this helps!

My Tesla drive failed in three months
So sorry to hear that! When we checked our Sandisk drive after driving for a couple hours it was warm. With all the footage constantly being saved, the Tesla USB stick must get really hot. Definitely worth the upgrade to make sure you always have Sentry enabled. Thanks for watching!
Picked my 2020 Model Y up from the Tesla service center today and they are useless! I will never buy another Tesla! My car was serviced for this issue three times and the problem has come back hours after picking my car up today. No one to call when you have issues like this. All I can do is schedule service 6 weeks from now and they will still not fix it! I am tiered of Tesla! I love the car but its not worth keeping with the poor service that hey offer.
