When it comes to the "Damage Only" upgrades, I do prioritize them for AoE attacks. I would definitely upgrade Show of Strength on Eothain, but only after my AoE attacks on Ironhide and Strider.
At the moment priorities for me are: 1. Damage plus buff/debuff 2. Healing plus buff/debuff 3. Flat damage on attacker I imagine as the game goes on like with most other similar games you'll be focussing on turn meter manipulation and haste/slow buffs and debuffs.
I am using the isengard trio with strider and ghaz (currently around gold 1 / platinum 2) in arena, ive only had enough purples to upgrade one ability and i went without hesitation on ugluk's basic. That 1 stack of provoke on all basics is completly insane, it split the damage around my team super well in arena. Probably gonna go with ghaz aoe attacks next.
Not as a beginner, no. They're built to be really good at max levels, but that means investing gear into them that can be better spent on other characters that can help you in more challenge missions.

I'd rather the damage be spread across the team instead of every attack targeting Ugluk. He dies far too fast otherwise
How much to upgrade
Is is best to try hyper focus only arena team and gear them, and what about star levels currently I have Rohan trio ghazh and strider
