    Alan Houston is an underrated NBA player.
    He would be drafted to the NBA by the Detroit Pistons who were transitioning out of their bad boy era, where he would spend 3 seasons, eventually becoming a sidekick to a young Grant Hill.
    Then in 1996, he would sign with the New York Knicks where he would have an incredible run and become one of the least talked about legends in Knicks history as his sweet shooting and durability served the Knicks for years first with an aging Patrick Ewing and an acquired Latrell Sprewell to help the Knicks make an improbably 1999 Finals run.
    Then when Ewing was traded, Houston and Sprewell became a great duo in New York for a few more years, keeping them relevant.
    Unfortunately, knee injuries that he had spent years playing through finally became too much and after an incredibly durable decade of play, he broke down in his final 2 years, retiring unexpectedly after the 2005 season

    • @VinceWhitacre
      @VinceWhitacre 3 месяца назад +3

      Yeah, he just missed the Pistons' great years, and also came around too late to go deep in the postseason with NY. If he was either a few years younger or if he had gotten drafted by the Knicks, he would be more well known.

    You never hear about him, but he averaged 30 ppg for 4 consecutive seasons in the 80s and 90s. Thats impressive even for someone to do today, with the pace of the game being quicker

    • @jefferyroy2566

      I had floor seats in the old Summit during the first six seasons of Olajuwon's career (1985-1990).The Jazz were playing that night in 1986, but Dantley wasn't (injured, I guess). Late in the game, a nicely dressed guy sits down a row behind us, accompanied by a fine-looking babe. The angle allowed me to get a look at him, and I'd bet the body part of my choice he was Dantley. What made me doubt myself was the guy's height. My friend at the game that night is a legitimate 6'4" and Dantley looked 6'3" at most. Shoes and the risers where we sat under the basket might have contributed to a shorter-looking Dantley. But I doubt it.
      I bring this up to emphasize how difficult it was to stop Dantley's post moves, at whatever height is accurate for the man. His spin move and tricky jab step threw defenders into confusion, and by the time those defenders swallowed the hook, "The Teacher" would take them to school. Amazing to watch...

    Love you Jonny and think your content is top notch, the absolute best of the best when it comes to NBA content on RUclips. But I have to say, I'm surprised you haven't covered that article by Tom Haberstroh about Jordan's DPOY and stat padding yet. If it's because you refuse to acknowledge propaganda (which is what it is, even if the article has factual information, its only purpose for existing is to discredit Jordan's DPOY and prop up Lebron in the GOAT debate, end of the article demonstrates that pretty clearly), then I'd understand. And I know you don't like the GOAT debate in general because of all the ignorance and biases involved. But still, it seems like a topic you would cover.

      I was just about to ask Johnny the same question, you beat me to it, can't wait to see what he has in store. That 'article' is the latest in a long line of Klutch smear campaigns, this time disguised as a 'DPOY Investigation'. The ONLY way that Haberstroh can prove that Jordan's home steals and blocks were inflated in his DPOY season is to carry out the following 3 steps...
      1) Analyse the game footage from ALL FORTY ONE of MJ’s home games in 1987/88, evaluate each steal and block on film and compare those findings to the official box score - this is the only way to determine if any stat inflation occurred.
      2) The process in step 1 then needs to be completed for each of the other DPOY candidates from that season, in order to determine that, if home stat inflation did occur in 1987/88, was it limited to only one player.
      3) The video footage from ALL 41 home games, for ALL DPOY candidates, then needs to be made public for independent review.

      Here’s the problem with Haberstroh’s ‘investigation’...he didn't complete ANY of the 3 steps above, didn't even come close! Jordan played 41 home games in his DPOY season. Haberstroh analysed just 6 of those games (what about the other THIRTY FIVE games!!). But here's the kicker...of those 6 games, 1 was found online and shows no evidence of stat inflation, film matches the box score and the other 5 games he sourced from Latvia on VHS tapes. He claims that there is evidence of home stat inflation in these 5 VHS games but doesn’t make the footage available to the public for independent review?!! We are expected to simply take his word on what he observed on those tapes?? Ask yourself this…if Haberstroh is so confident that the footage on those VHS tapes supports what he is alleging in his article, why has he failed to make that footage available for independent evaluation?
      All his article proves is that the biggest majority of DPOY candidates in the 1987/88 season (and throughout NBA history) have recorded more steals and blocks at home than on the road and that Jordan's home steals and blocks in 1987/88 are marginally higher than the number of steals and blocks his fellow DPOY candidates recorded in their home stadiums. Establishing a disparity between home and road stats is not proof of home stat inflation, players generally perform better at home, that’s not unique to MJ and it’s not unique to one NBA Era...less back-to-back games, no travel, more rested, often more energised in front of a home crowd etc. The ONLY way to prove that Jordan's steals and blocks at home were inflated in 1987/88 is to carry out the 3 steps laid out above. Period.

    • @theresak2024
      @theresak2024 3 месяца назад

      @@jonnyarnett Really looking forward to your video Jonny on this latest Jordan smear campaign, this one is disguised as a 'DPOY Investigation'. I'm sure you will cover this in your video but NOBODY is asking Haberstroh about the fact that he hasn't made those 5 games that he has on VHS available for independent review. Copyright law may prohibit him from uploading that VHS footage online but he could very easily make those 5 VHS games available to other Sports Analysts for independent review. If he's so confident that what's on those tapes supports his allegations, why wouldn't he make the footage available for impartial verification? He has been interviewed several times in the last week and not one media person has asked him about releasing that VHS footage. Instead, we're expected to take his word on what he claims he observed.

    Here's a strange one: Nate McMillan.
    12 years as a player in Seattle, almost all as a back-up to Gary Payton. Yet made two All- Defense teams and led the league in steals in 1994 (coming off the bench!). Advanced stats paint him as one of the best defensive guards of the '90s. Some people even postulate he was better than Payton! I don't particularly agree, and I grew up watching both, but that the conversation even exists is a credit to the man. Also, people talk about how the '96 Sonics struggled because George Karl wouldn't let an injured Gary Payton guard MJ, but people forget that Nate was also hurt, which -- in George Karl's own words -- contributed to that fateful decision.
    Respected in Seattle, of course: his number is retired, and he IS Mr. Sonic, after all, a title he earned not just by being really good, but also by being that quintessential team guy who sticks around even in a lesser role when he surely could've gone elsewhere to start. This meant a lot to Sonics fans at the time, because back in the '90s Seattle was still seen, believe it or not, as NBA Siberia -- Southern Alaska, I used to hear folks say, and a lot of our great players usually couldn't wait to leave.
    And now people just know him as a modern day Lenny Wilkens type of coach, the kind who can make a bad team good but can't ever make a good team great. Funny that they were both PG's for the Sonics.

I was (am) not a Knicks fan, but back then (around 2000) it was incredibly hard for me to get an NBA jersey (I'm not from America, but from a country where basketball was barely played or watched, especially then, and buying from the internet was still not a thing), but I lucked out because the grandma of my one NBA fan friend went to the US and bought NBA jerseys for both him and his brother. He got a Sprewell jersey and his brother got an Allan Houston jersey. His brother didn't give a damn about the NBA so I offered him to purchase the jersey... which he gladly accepted (I now feel kinda bad, but I also bought it from him dirt cheap for around $10)... because of this, Allan Houston always kinda kept a special place in my NBA heart. I still have the jersey, although now I wouldn't be able to fit in it.

    Many of these players were solid but not slept on... C hodges came off the bench and averaged around 9-10 pts his career. hes not "tearing up" the league in today's game. H hawkins again was a solid player not slept on. he average 13 pt 3 reb in his 96 finals appearance while kemp average 20-10. kemp is slept on and is no longer talked about. this vid seems like an old head seeing what he can get away with or we have vastly different slept on thresholds.

    I think you should include Mike Bibby and Chris Webber next. These two definitely don’t get the respect they deserve.

    Sydney Moncrief was one of the best defenders in the 1980's, winning the first two defensive player of the year awards when offensive numbers were at their peak. His defensive prowess was not all he had as his athleticism, and above average perimeter tools were able to allow him excel on the offensive end of the ball during the underappreciated 1980's bucks squads. It is unfortunate that his career, and prime, ended early yet his basketball

    Oh, the Sonics fan in me loves the Hersey Hawkins shoutout. When I was a kid, my mom saved money for who knows how long so that we could go to one of the Sonics-Rockets playoff games. I thought for days about what player I wanted to make a sign for, and finally decided on Hawkins. He hit a clutch 3 to send the game into overtime, it was one of the greatest sports moments of my childhood
    Didn't think anyone other than Sonics fans remembers him. What a baller, and had ice in his veins. Love the shoutout, Jonny

    I loved the way 3 point shots were made from the corner by the baseline in the 90s.Theres something nostalgic about how the NbA players could hit that shot

    Craig Hodges got kicked out of the Bulls because he kept asking and demanding MJ to do more for the black community. Because of MJ's affiliation to his endorsement products, he could not do this then and he still doesn't do it now which is understandable.

    Haradaway and Hersey Hawkins would destroy the NBA today. Craig Hodges fell into a bitter race/culture war with the media; that is why is name lost some intergrity.

    About guerin i cant say he is just a really great basketball player because in 1962 which was his best season stats were inflated since wilt averaged 50 ppg and Elgin baylor i think 38 so compared to his peers he wasnt on the same lvl

      I'm not claiming he was some huge star anymore, but there's no denying that he was a major part of their offense. He averaged 15.6 Points in that 95-96 season, and their leading scorer averaged 19.6. They needed him for that success.
