I love saltwater fly fishing thanks to the Popovics books and videos (now online at the ASWF website) and caught my first striper on a black jiggy fly and my biggest 41 lb striper on a purple body and red headed bucktail deceiver. I only met Popovics one time when he pulled his van behind me in SSP when I was fly casting and, after a brief conversation, he handed me 3 of his flies that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Countless people like me have had amazing saltwater fly fishing experiences thanks to Bob Popovics.

I watched this because I found out recently about his accident. I hope he pulls through. I have all his books. It was a great interview. I fish similar water being on LI, NY. I got to meet you a few years back at a Jersey Show. You were very gracious with your time.
    Thanks Olympian

Thank you, Nicky, for getting the ol' man off the couch and using his contacts and notoriety to open so many doors in making these folks available for interviewing. This series truly is an invaluable historical record for now and for the future. I hope someone will do the same for the historical fly-fishing figures on the West coast, like Dan Blanton, Neil Light, Trey Combs, Bill McMillan et al, etc., before it is too late. Good-on-ya, Nicky and Andy.
    Cheers!

Fishing ain’t my thing at all. But I never miss these podcasts. Andy and Nicky are bluesmen, and like attracts like-listening to stories contained in all these interesting friendships and shared adventures feeds the soul! No different than being privy to a conversation between real deal musician friends like BB King and Buddy Guy. Thanks for all the stories and good vibes y’all! HUGE PROPS! xo

He has had such a huge impact on the flies we tie for predator fish all around the world. Especially in the pike fly fishing world he has been the biggest influence of all. We salute you Bob!

Andy, thank you for doing this most delightful interview.
Bob, thank you for being such a delightful man.
I’ve tied flies and have fly fished for over 50 years now. The body has failed and all I can do at this point is enjoy things such as this tremendous program.
It’s nice to know that so many truly good people have shared in this sport that consumed my life with so much passion.
I was fortunate to enjoy the same kind of camaraderie with my friends. There is simply nothing else to compare with the friendships one gains from fly fishing.
    Thank you again gentlemen.

This is one of the BEST interviews ever. Thank you! You definitely need to follow up with Bob about his collections and memorabilia of the early days of NE Coast saltwater fly angling. What a wonderful, humble, sincere man; a fellow that changed the sport of saltwater angling and asked for nothing in return other than friendship, fun, and occasional fish. Thank you, Bob, for sharing your story.

...also, in response to "who are the younger tyers you admire", Bob mentions -- twice, and first each time -- the name of the talented Maine fly-tier Ben Whalley. If you ever try to compliment Ben about one of his own flies, his response will invariably be an homage to Bob Popovics and all he has done for the sport, and how generous he still is with his time to mentor, teach, share, and convey techniques and insights about saltwater flies.

Wow . I started fly fishing in 1959 and didn’t start tying until 1990 ,this video brings back so many memories of going to the early fishing shows and meeting a bunch of these guys and listening to what they had to say as far as techniques, equipment, tying everything that I’m still absorbed in today . To hear Bob talk about his group of friends and there getting together makes me smile to see how fresh this still is in his mind . Bob thanks for the interview and Andy for bringing this to us . To Bob Semper Fi brother and Andy , Happy Trails

So Glad to see Bob Popovics!!! Last time I saw him was at the Edison Fly show back in '19 or'20 just before that whole covid mess... So Happy to see Mr. P is doing Good!!! He was kind enough to give me a Fly he made years ago when my Son and I stopped by his table where he was tying at one of those Fly shows. Hope to see him again!! Funny Bob later mentions a Photographer friend of his, Tom Lynch who took pics of Bob fishing, I have that framed photo of Bob casting that famous large loop cast and that I have the Fly Bob was using in that Cast , given to me by Bob at one of his events. Great Guy!!!
