The title of this video made me think it was just a TFO commercial. I’m glad I watched it anyway, otherwise I would have missed a great discussion about casting and rod action.
We’ll explained. as a native to Florida in the 80s Fort Lauderdale had very limited rod access. I learned to fish with Kummon 7 weight. caught all the Bonita jacks and bones I could. Then the plant burned down. Switched to the last rod I bought when I was 16. Sage 9 wt DS from LMR. Joan Fairbanks helped me pick out she is the best. I’ve caught everything from sails bones permit snook tarpon snapper bass catfish. When I taught my son and daughter. I would use the top of a spin rod 10 pound and teach them loop control couple zip ties to attach the rod to stop breaking the wrist. They both break there wrist and out cast me lol. thanks for sharing and bring back the old days to cool!
Mr Pallot, I have been watching you since my younger years. Watching this video you have shed a great deal of knowledge and experience. I got my first try at fly fishing two weeks ago in Oswego NY for salmon. Your explanation of the characteristic on the rod makes it very easy to understand. I look foward to getting my first fly rod soon. Thank you and keep up the great work that you do. Soon to be newbie from the Bronx NY Fernando.
I’ve had the 7wt axiom 2 X for about 18months and I love it, I’ve caught several PBs on it and it’s my go to rod for so many different species and situations.
Brilliant!! - Finally a great explanation of Rod Action and casting Dynamics. Yet another great Flip and Barin (Brain and Flip) video. Really appreciated the effort you put in.
I love hearing Flip speak
I love the tfo stuff...great reels too !! Just took a friend up to the local fly shop to get a mangrove outfit...you simply cant beat this rod for the money...hands down..the best ..
So spot on !!! TRUTH !!!
I love too hear the GODFATHER of fly fishing I would love too know what reel would Flip use on the mangrove coast rod?
It's in the video brother.. nautilus ccfx2..great reel..great sound too
I bought a couple sub 200 dollar rods when I first started out I was getting good at casting but didn't have the consistency or distance I needed to fish in florida I had a pro shop guy set me up on a class aylt bass pro shops there I met a guy which owned a pro shop in winter park he sold me a 8 wt mangrove which is now my go to I love my mangroves they are amazing rods
What line did you pair with it?
@@dimitrioskostavavlas7068, Cortland Hi-Vis Flip Pallot Fly Line.
Call me crazy, but the lighter the rod the faster I like them. 6&7wt I love a method/igniter. 8-12 T&T Exocet, mangrove is a perfect rod for 9-12 wt. the softer feel and deeper flex makes casting the heavy rods easier.
Couldn't agree with this statement more. I own about every "flagship" released since 2011 for the salt minus the Sage offerings, and I find that for example I can't stand blind casting my 12WT Hardy Proaxis-X, but I LOVE my Sage ONE in 8. Love my Meridian 11 (fast rod but it loads deeper than most heavyweights), but dislike any casting except short mangrove shots with my Mangrove in 8....and so on and so forth. Fast to ultra fast rods feel fun and light on their feet in sub - 9 weight sizes, above that they're cumbersome and "clubby".
What reel is on the 2x?
Flip is likely my favorite flats/back country angler....EVER. That being said, the idea that a slow or medium or medium fast rod can "do" the same thing as a fast rod kind've defeats the idea of designing rods with different tapers. The original Mangrove was my first fly rod....Loved it, sold it about 2 years after I bought it because there were "better" rods out there for my evolving skill set and intended use. Implying that you can drive a 60ft cast into a cross wind with a soft rod is probably devaluing the need for fast rods at best and poor buying advice at worst. Saying a rod can "do what the other rod can do, differently" probably isn't the best way to go about it. Not that he said that, but the Axiom exists for a reason, that reason is speed and distance. The Mangrove exists for another reason, that reason is presentation and ease of use. Is there some crossover? Certainly. Can the Axiom do all the things the mangrove can do? Yes, yes it can. Can the mangrove do all the things the Axiom can do? No, no it can't.
Sorry Brother..the mangrove can do anything the axiom can..it just requires a different style..lefty changed my life with a flimsy fiberglass noodle of a rod when I was a kid...you can throw anything once you understand the loop and how to create it
@@stephenuzzle9060 No it cant, that's like saying a Jeep Wrangler and a Ferrari 458 are the same car because they drive. There's another video where Flip say "wellllllll, if you're an expert caster you're probably better off with the Axiom because you can tap into that last 10% of performance" people get into this "worship mode" when it comes to guys like Lefty and Flip. They're incredible casters and anglers but their word isn't the last word on all things fly tackle. I've been exclusively fly fishing, in the salt, for years and years - I have 14 rods ranging from 5 to 13wt.....I have multiple rods in sizes 7, 8, 9, and 11.....you know why? Different actions. Telling me a sage pulse can do the same thing as a sage ignitor is delusional. The mangrove coast was designed specifically for short casts and beginner to intermediate anglers. It's a great rod, I own one in 7WT. Will it do what my Douglas SKY-G does? No fuckin way. This idea that "great" casters can perform voodoo on rods designed for a specific purpose and get them to outperform rods designed for another is beyond me, it's asinine on its face.
@@Blipp619Amen. Said well. When a person owns or has owned many rods, and that person is a proficient caster and can discern the differences between the rods and their actions, they understand.
I wish I could buy a boxed set of walkers 😢
Hi Flipp ! Please go visit Carl Allen at Walkers Key ! I think he'd love to see you there and at the fishing tournament next year !
