The first thing to try when you can't hear calls on your iPhone unless you're using #speaker is to try making the call through another device, like Bluetooth headphones. Once you've made the call, try transferring it back to your iPhone handset.
If this works, your iPhone probably has a software problem. If it doesn't, try taking your iPhone out of its case and removing your screen protector. Either one of them could be obstructing the microphones on your iPhone. Those microphones work together to cancel noise when you're on a phone call.
Next, try restarting your iPhone. This can fix a minor software on your iPhone. If you still can't hear calls, check to make sure your iPhone isn't paired to a Bluetooth device. It's possible call audio is playing through that device rather than the earpiece on your iPhone.
Lint, gunk, and other debris could be obstructing the earpiece or one of the microphones on your iPhone, so clean them out with an anti-static brush or a brand new toothbrush. It's a good idea to clean out the charging port too, as any build-up could trick your iPhone into thinking that headphones are plugged in.
Two iPhone settings could be causing the problem when you only hear calls when using speakerphone. First, head to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Call Audio Routing and make Automatic is selected.
If you have an iPhone 12 or older, head to Settings → Accessibility → Audio / Visual and turn off Phone Noise Cancellation. If you have an iPhone 13 or newer, open Control Center while on a call, tap on Mic Mode, and select Voice Isolation.
Another way to fix a potential software problem is to update your iPhone. Since #Phone is a native app, it can only be updated through iOS updates. Head to Settings → General → Software Update to check for a new version of iOS.
The final step to completely rule out a software problem is a DFU (device firmware update) restore. This is the deepest type of iPhone restore. Every line of a code is erased and reloaded, and a fresh version of iOS is installed. Make sure you have a backup before restoring your iPhone!

David & David. Thanks for your service. I wondering about complaints from iPhone, breaking up, not disconnecting the phone call, lately. In my case, I have been working with AT&T for fixing it. So far there was a setting change to do the reception better. Internet improves a lot with a new router… so far so good. I trust these expensive devices. Excellent report on bugs, Thanks 👍

Thank you so much! For a period of time, I thought I was losing my hearing. Once I confirmed my hearing was good, the next step was to take my iPhone to Apple for a check up. I am glad I went to google asking about this issue. Your video came up. Now I can once again hear callers on my iPhone.

Great advise. I have a question, why on my iPhone 13 with all updates, if I use any map app, I have to turn off Bluetooth in order to hear person navigating me? Which is not good because turning Bluetooth off, turns off my car speaker!

Is there a way to permanently turn on the speaker phone on an Android (Samsung Galaxy)? I get tired of having to turn it on every time I send or receive a call. I rarely use the "standard" mode and much prefer "speaker" mode. TIA

#5 reboot works but I have to reboot like 5 times a day. Also anytime it’s like this I also get no sound notification’s also not sure it’s connected but a couple of time I get fuse errors in iTunes. Any ideas?

What about if it occurred after ripped flex change. It has zero sound on ear and upper speaker. We tried different flexes and speakers no sound.
Great video, as always. I’d like to say I’ve become a “power user“ because of your information, but I’m not there yet. The problem I am having is almost exactly the opposite of this video. Incoming calls, seemingly random numbers, go directly to voicemail. Text and voicemail seem to work fine but my phone doesn’t even register the call as coming in. No record of it in recent or missed calls. I called Apple and they are aware of the problem but I thought you guys might possibly have an answer that they’re geniuses back there at Apple have not figured out yet or at the very least you could make this problem more widely known so that Apple might actually do something about it. thanks again, I’ve been a subscriber for sometime now, and your videos have proven invaluable to me. I’m big on security, so I really appreciate that aspect of your instruction.
I did everything and didn’t fix my issue. I can’t hear calls at all unless I put it in speaker. I’m annoyed because it’s not the first time that iPhones start acting weird once the launch the new version. 🤔

Great video. Fixed my inop vehicle speaker witn a new IPhone 15 promax with just a few easy steps. per your video..I called the selling AT&T store and they said they never geard of this problem. It's not a hardware or software issue. It's an Apple issue. THEY decide when it's time to replace your phone. I have an 11, and 2 people I know have 12's and we all have the same problem, it's extremely difficult to hear a caller. Mine started a year ago, then the other's phones started about 2 months ago. I've tried everything to fix it, numerous times. It's not the phone, it's Apple deciding that it wants my money for a new phone. Which is why I'm finally going to make the jump to Samsung
The fix that they recommended worked with the audiovisual voiceover whatever that was. The phone noise cancellation under audio visual works for me and I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max. They remember they recommended it for people with 12 or over but it worked for my 11 thank you.

@@WithElpida I went to one of iphone stores and he told me, if it’s from iPhone itself we will fix it for free but if it from your usage we will charge you but we need to erase all your data on iPhone plus removing the screen so we can check the system from inside the phone itself “ actually it’s a long process so I didn’t leave my phone 😂 now I am using the speaker or headphones

The screen protector was my problem... I'm shocked. I've had that screen protector on since release day of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Never had any real audio problems until recently and I was blaming it on a software update. I just assumed since it was on there for over 4 years that it couldn't be the problem. My mind is blown.

I have a iPhone 14 pro max, it’s 5 months old. Since I normally just use speaker phone I did not notice there was a problem with the microphone. All calls are normal when using the speaker phone function but if I turn that off and put the phone to my ear the person I’m talking to says that I sound like I’m underwater and they can’t understand me.
At first I went to Apple Store and it seemed fixed for a few hours. Then it returned. A few days later I returned to the Apple Store and another tech tried to fix the issue but couldn’t even after wiping the phone and reinstalling to os again…. Apple Care will be sending me a new phone. We’ll see if that works. Please note I also changed cell provider in the middle of dealing with this because the first tech said it may be an issue with them. Changing cell provider did not fix the issue.
Update: as of today, Monday, June 12, 2023 Apple Care replaced my phone with a new one. I transferred all settings and apps from original iPhone to the new replacement… the phone now works perfectly.
There is now no problem with the microphone audio that call receivers were hearing when the phone is held in the “ up to the ear position “.
Therefore this proves to me that it was a hardware problem with the original iPhone…..

Hi Guy Jim here from Manchester in the UK can you help me please ? I have an Apple iphone 10 XR I'm running IOS 16.6, Now the phone won't allow me to make any international calls ,but it will allow me to make local calls and send texts i can also make internet calls via WhatsApp, Messenger, but everytime i try and make an International call the phone call does not connect and says ''Call Failed'' i have not got a clue whats wrong and as you are the specialists i have come to you for your guidance Please i have tried a few fixes removing the sim and put it back clean in its slot, i have tried turning the phone off leaving for thirty minutes and re-booting it all to nothing.

I have an issue where people can’t hear me when I’m on a call.
A wrong size screen protector (installed by a Verizon store) was covering up the microphone (in the top notch on my iPhone 12 Mini) and people couldn’t hear me and I couldn’t hear them. The Apple Store genius discovered this and took it off , I had the right size protector installed. My screen had a crack and needed a protector.
