The loss of Gary Rossendale last week, the last of the original…takes me right back to the plane crash news. RIP to all LS members, and thank you for the joy.
The lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gains, backup vocalist Cassie Gains & several members of their crew died. Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant replaced his brother when the band reformed in 87. Leonard Skinner was their Gym teacher in H. S. They were poking fun at him because he was strict & didn't believe in long hair on a boy. Great Band & you may want to do the whole album when you can, they had some deep cuts that were great. You guys are the BEST. Peace!
Many years later, Lynyrd Skynyrd invited Coach Skinner onstage after all of them reconciled with the coach. I read that Skinner enjoyed the concert. At a location of original stuff displayed at Rock Hall mentioned of Coach Skinner. Skinner is immortalized in Rock History.
Ronnie Van Zant the leader of the band ,the lead singer and the writer of the lyrics died in the plane crash . Cassie Gaines a backup singer and her little brother Steve Gaines who just over a year before had taken over as the 3rd lead guitarist after Ed King had left the band were the only members of the band who died . Also Dean Kirkpatrick the assistant road manager and the pilot and co-pilot died for a total of 6 . However the other 20 people on the plane ( the rest of the band the roadies sound men lighting men and such ) were ALL injured severally to critically but luckily nobody else died . A few were in the hospital a couple of months and more . Gentlemen this is one of the very few bands of all time TO NEVER EVER HAVE RECORDED OR PERFORMED A BAD SONG ‼️ As I said before never a bad song so anything you listen to from Skynyrd you are gonna love but I would suggest for your next Lynyrd Skynyrd video CALL ME THE BREEZE it's 💯 percent full on joy turned into music you won't be able to sit still . Guitarist Ed King recorded the bass parts when Leon Wilkeson left. Leon returned and remained with the band until his death in 2001. The song “Mad Hatter” is in his memory. Leon wore several different hats on stage.
From a mother's perspective. RIP Gary Rossington. To Dale and your family, thank you for your dedication to The Rossington Band and to Lynyrd Skynyrd. God bless all of you.
Gimme three steps, That smell, Curtis Lowe, Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird, Gimme back my bullets... And so, so, so many more to check out. An Amazing band who were amazing Live.
One of my top three favorites by Skynyrd. Tuesday's Gone and The Ballad of Curtis Loew are the other two. But yes....Freebird and all of the more popular ones by them are all in the second most favorite grouping.
I grew up in the interstate of Southern New Mexico and West Texas. Every year the senior class from our high school got to choose our graduation song, 90% of the time, it was 'Simple Man'
Lynyrd Skynyrd has so many good songs. You should explore more. You'd enjoy the songs: I Know a Little, Call Me the Breeze, I Need You, Workin' for MCA, and Gimmie Back My Bullets. And yes, the plane crash in 1977 was horrible. They were at the height of their career, just released a new (great) album. They lost three members, including the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. I was lucky to see them in Oakland 3 months before the plane crash, right up front and very close to the stage. I was mesmerized, lol. They put on an amazing show. I was such a Skynyrd head in high school!!
October 20th 1977 was the plane crash. Such a blow to this great band. Their live album released in 1976 is so powerful. If you do any live stuff, please be sure it's pre crash. Also be sure to listen to That Smell from the Street Survivors album. That was the last album before the crash. Came back in 1987 with 5 founding members. Skynyrd is my favorite band of all time. Simple Man was from their first album. Keep up the awesome reactions.
I'm so glad you appreciated not just the musicality of the group but what the song communicates. They truly had great messages when you listened closely.
@@ricshaffer4009 I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd boo’ed off the stage when they fronted the WHO in ST Louis, MO!!! They turned the sound off on them, left Allen Collins onstage playing by himself! Ronnie Van Zant was one of the less skilled singers in southern rock!
@@redevil7081 My favorite band. I've seen them live about a dozen times and regret not seeing them more than that. I just don't like to limit the Allman Brothers to Southern Rock, even though they sort of inadvertently invented the genre, along with Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels and many others. The Brothers are their own unique mix of blues, rock, jazz, country and other styles. Yes, there was a plane crash that took the singer, Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and back up singer, Cassie Gaines (Steve’s sister). And as far as I can recall, Lynyrd Skynyrd was a take on a teacher from school, Leonard Skinner. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. ❤️

Guys Another local band from Jacksonville, Florida, Shinedown cover this song where widow of Ronnie Vant Zant has a local bar. Shinedown played there until they gotten signed on to a label.
Super cool to listen to you 2 sort through this one. Ronnie (lead vocals) was pretty well known for rehearsing like all the time--he was the leader and ran a tight ship--so not a big surprise to me to hear one of your first comments: they're tight. And he always sang barefoot. These guys are characters and the highest talent all around. Much love your way brothers....
They like the ABB were incredibly disciplined when it came to putting the time and effort in. And they had incredibly high standards. They were among the very best.
Ed King is the one with the lightning bolt going through his head in the picture on the album cover. The photographer took several pictures and when he realized he captured a lightning bolt he stopped and told the guys we got it. And immediately Gary Rossington, the guy sitting closest to Ed throw up all over the side walk :^)
Left to Right on the album cover, Leon Wilkeson bass, Billy Powell piano, Ronnie Van Zant vocals, Gary Rossington guitar, Bob Burns drums, Allen Collins guitar, Ed King guitar. Only 1 person on the cover died in the crash and that was Ronnie Van Zant. This album was their first album released in 1973. Ed King and Bob Burns were no longer with the band when the plane crashed on October 20th 1977. Artimus Pyle had taken over on drums around 74 or 75 and Steve Gaines took Ed Kings place on guitar in 76. There were 26 people on the plane, 6 died, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines who sang back up vocals and was also Steve's sister. Dean Kilpatrick who was their road manager, and both pilots. Everyone on the cover of this album is gone now with the passing of Gary Rossington just 11 days ago. The Rabbit hole is deep and will be worth the trip for you both. I suggest studio versions first and then live versions. They are awesome to watch live and IMHO the best Southern rock band ever, and actually my favorite band ever. Great reaction and enjoy your trip down Lynyrd Skynyrd Lane guys, I'll be watching. Thanks.
You must watch the live performance of Freebird in Oakland CA from Day on the Green. You'll be AMAZED!!!! Just about 3 mths after that concert was the horrific plane crash....
Hendrix's cover of Dylan's "All along the Watchtower", Manfred Mann's cover of Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light" and Skynyrd's cover of JJ Cale's "Call me the Breeze" are my personal 3 best cover songs in the classic rock era. The original members of LS only had like 5 studio albums, but they are worthy of a deep dive. Thanks for this one .. ya'll are the best!!!
Great observation. Cover records can be great, and even improvements. For example, Manfred Mann's cover is quite different than the original, and I love it.
I was a kid when Skynyrd kinda came and went. There were no video channels in the 70s, no cell phones, and zero inkling that an "internet" was coming. The plane crash was word of mouth to me. But this is what we did. We shared records; we'd hop rides to the record store when we knew someone was going. Each of us had a box of 45s. My cousin bought the "Pronounced" album---the 33s being too rich for my blood---and you better believe his esteem grew in my eyes! He turned me on to Bad Company, too, about the same time. What an incredible time that was for music.
Lynyrd Skynyrd has such a huge variety in their catalog across several albums before the plane crash in '77 which effectively ended the group. You will probably get a lot of requests for The Ballad Of Curtis Loew and I hope you do that one. Not only is it a great song, but it just shows you the contrast and what they are capable of doing. And there are so many deep cuts you will probably never get to that are just amazing from a musical point of view. Railroad Song is one of those, for example. But they are all over the place but they always have their own sound. They were insanely talented and so tight. And just so many well written songs, both in the complex interweaving musical arrangements and lyrically as well. They named their band after their gym teacher in high school, laugh. At one point I saw an interview with him later in life and he said that they were troublemakers to some degree and he was skeptical about where they would end up in life, but once they made it, he said he looks back upon them fondly. I love the bass guitar lines in every Lynyrd Skynyrd song, and for most of their time, Leon Wilkeson was the bass player and that guy was a monster. Not only was he talented, they would sometimes play these three hour shows and he was relentless, like a machine. And he looked good on stage doing it, laugh. I owned all of their albums and there is not one song I don't like. It's that kind of band, for me anyway. Every single song. If you truly want to get blown away by some virtuoso musicianship, check out Honky Tonk Night Time Man from their final album Street Survivor before the plane crash. It will blow you away. Also, I know A Little is a short fast little boogie Banger featuring Steven Gaines on guitar and it's incredible. And it was a very popular radio and jukebox song from that same album.
the whole group did not die, Ronnie Van Zant the lead singer died, Steve Gaines guitarist died as did his sister Cassie Gaines one of the back up singer as did Gene Kilpatrick the road manager and the two pilots. The rest were seriously injured. Thanks for doing this review guys.
This bands timing was impeccable. They had such an awesome feel for where each other was at in their playing. I know you guys get pestered but some of my faves are..."I know a Little", "Saturday Night Special", Gimme Three Steps", "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" , "I Ain't the One". I'm really enjoying reliving the journey along with you guys. Keep it up. Your opinions are valued.
I believe half the band died in the plane crash, in high school, they had a coach that would always give them a hard time because of their long hair, his name was Leonard Skinard
I'm from Maine..I got in a fight with a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd in the parking lot of Dr. Feelgoods in St. Pete, Florida, in 1972..nobody had heard of them at the time, they were just a decent bar band..we were fighting over the results of the Battle of Gettysburg..no lie....

"Ballad of Curtis Low," "Gimmie Three Steps," "That Smell," "Saturday Night Duke Special," "Wino," and, of course "Freebird" are all Skynyrd "MUSTS." Just for starters off the top of my head!

This song got me Sober. Had a terrible addiction to Crystal meth and alcohol and I remember putting it on the headphones one night and just bawling like a baby.
One of the few surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington died early this month at the age of 71. Rossington was founding guitarist for the band.
Two of my all-time favorite verses are in this song: “Forget your lust for the rich man's gold All that you need is in your soul And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied” “Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself Follow your heart and nothing else And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied”
What a band and what a song. I think it's fair to say an anthem for life and advice most all Mama's would give their sons. Super reaction gentlemen. Oct 20th 1977 was one of my most bitter teenage days growing up. They are all finally together again...RIP. ❤️ Mama told me when I was young "Come sit beside me, my only son And listen closely to what I say And if you do this it'll help you Some sunny day" Oh, yeah Oh, take your time, don't live too fast Troubles will come and they will pass You'll find a woman, yeah, and you'll find love And don't forget son there is someone up above And be a simple kind of man Oh, be something you love and understand Baby, be a simple kind of man Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can? Forget your lust for the rich man's gold All that you need is in your soul And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied And be a simple kind of man Oh, be something you love and understand Baby, be a simple kind of man Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can? Oh, yes, I will Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself Follow your heart and nothing else And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied And be a simple kind of man Oh, be something you love and understand Baby, be a simple kind of man Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can? Baby, be a simple, be a simple man Oh, be something you love and understand Baby, be a simple kind of man
Leonard Skinner was a teacher they had who hated longhairs so they named their band after him. The crash of their plane in 1977 resulted in the deaths of 5 people , 3 of them being band members, and severely injuring the rest. It effectively ended Lynyrd Skynyrd as the world knew them, being such a profound tragedy for all those involved. Hearing Skynyrd is always a bitter sweet celebration for me. R.I.P. guitarist Gary Rossington, who passed in March 2023.
I loved Lynyrd Skynyrd before the plane crash, which killed the lead singer/writer/leader of the band, the keyboardist, a guitarist and his sister, who was a backup singer. Many were severely injured and carried on, but without Ronnie Van Zandt, they were never the same, as I moved to more progressive music. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a misspelling of their high school teacher's name. Have you listened to Neil Young, an eclectic, prolific genius? I suggest the song "Southern Man," which was mentioned in Lynyrd Skynyrd's hit "Sweet Home Alabama." You guys are great!
Billy Powell the keyboardist did survive the crash. Lost in the crash were Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie, the bands manager along with the pilot and co-pilot.
The loss of Gary Rossendale last week, the last of the original…takes me right back to the plane crash news. RIP to all LS members, and thank you for the joy.
That's Gary Rossington. RIP Gary.

I sing this to my son allot! He is a man now and it is just like this song says it all!❤️🔥
Ed King is the one with the lightning bolt going through his head in the picture on the album cover. The photographer took several pictures and when he realized he captured a lightning bolt he stopped and told the guys we got it. And immediately Gary Rossington, the guy sitting closest to Ed throw up all over the side walk :^)
I NEED YOU ...is another hit❤
All Great songs..!
Great observation. Cover records can be great, and even improvements. For example, Manfred Mann's cover is quite different than the original, and I love it.
Skynyrd didn't cover many out side writers, but when they did they killed it
One of the best songs ever written! 🥁🎸🥳🔥
Thank you so much for a 'Skynyrd reaction.
You guys really bring it.
Peace Out 😊✌️
This is the place to be to hear some good music...
Victor 3/12/04 RIP....My BFF and twin souls, LIVED this song 💯 ❤️
Thanks for playing this!!🙏
Now you're talking Ballard of Curtis Lowe next please 🙏
Absolutely Free Bird live in Oakland. Cannot go wrong, this is the song that became their tour de force and an absolute rock anthem.
Much love guys.
Yes, and at Knebworth England too.
These guys were the pioneers of southern rock the best😊
I believe half the band died in the plane crash, in high school, they had a coach that would always give them a hard time because of their long hair, his name was Leonard Skinard
A must do is Call Me The Breeze, nasty guitar and piano solos...my fav LS song!
If you want to see Skynyrd at their best check out Freebird live from Oakland CA in 78!!!!
My personal favorite…along with Comin Home
I would imagine that by now you guys have a request list of massive proportions.
MASSIVE!!!!! I’m overwhelmed
More from them
I Ain’t The One

Bout time! You fellas noticed the musicianship. Now you need to hear them rock with those 3 guitars. The thing with skynyrd is they wrote songs that the common man can relate to. One of the best bands in rock
This, to me, is the best one u could pick...I just lost a friend feb 23rd that was only 54( so am i and have known him since i was 18),in a car accident and they played this for him at his funeral... such a wonderful, heart felt song and just hits u in so many ways emotionally
the plane crash in 1977 took Ronnie, the lead singer, and Steve Gaines, a guitar player. Truly, the day the music died, for me.
My lord one of the most iconic songs of all time.
My son was born in 81, so he has heard it his whole life.
The rare 2 cut video.1977. Freebird! Was just three months before the crash. Story in dropdown......
Long will Skynyrd live !!!!😢
"Ballad of Curtis Low," "Gimmie Three Steps," "That Smell," "Saturday Night Duke Special," "Wino," and, of course "Freebird" are all Skynyrd "MUSTS." Just for starters off the top of my head!
Great reaction, y'all gonna really Dig this Rabbit Hole.🤫😉😎💯🔥
Once y'all get a chance, check out SHINE DOWN'S cover of this one. Hella vocals, Powerful. Be cool man, Peace ✌️☮️
As others have said, The Ballad of Curtis Lowe is one of their greatest.
This song got me Sober. Had a terrible addiction to Crystal meth and alcohol and I remember putting it on the headphones one night and just bawling like a baby.
Southern Rock at its finest
One of the few surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington died early this month at the age of 71. Rossington was founding guitarist for the band.
Reminds me of my son. Just a simple and happy man. Great song. Thanks for playing this.😊
Two of my all-time favorite verses are in this song:
“Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied”
“Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied”
Powerful sound , powerful message.
What a band and what a song. I think it's fair to say an anthem for life and advice most all Mama's would give their sons. Super reaction gentlemen. Oct 20th 1977 was one of my most bitter teenage days growing up. They are all finally together again...RIP. ❤️
Mama told me when I was young
"Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it'll help you
Some sunny day"
Oh, yeah
Oh, take your time, don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
You'll find a woman, yeah, and you'll find love
And don't forget son there is someone up above
And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can?
Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied
And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can?
Oh, yes, I will
Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh, baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied
And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can?
Baby, be a simple, be a simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
Leonard Skinner was a teacher they had who hated longhairs so they named their band after him.
I could be wrong, but I believe Leonard Skinner was a high school teacher (gym teacher at that) that didn't think these guys would amount to anything.
You can never tire of listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd! I was lucky that I got to see them at the Dodger Stadium in the summer of 1977. Rest in Peace! 💙
