This girl is funny, confident and smart. I really like her! And on top of that, representing people with cp and an ethnic minority in the western culture in such a positive way - it makes me love her!
She owes her self-confidence to her parents and you can clearly hear she is thankful to them
Her wiki page says "She described herself in a BBC interview as "a Palestinian Muslim virgin with cerebral palsy, from New Jersey, who is an actress, comedian and activist".
Is there a reason why she cannot find love, thus a relationship? Or does CP prevent that? She would make someone so HAPPY! Can she have children? Not trying to pry.
As someone else said, this is the first TED talk in ages that really made me inspired!

Never give up hope. Get your daughter motivated and excited with all activities everyday. She will overcome it all. Maysoon’s dad was smart in enrolling her to dance-improving her mobility. That’s what her muscles need.

@@camorangergaming5559 honestly I’m lucky and only really have problems with the walking aspect. I just walk with a Bounce ig you could say, and the nerves in my legs tend to cause them to shake every once in a while but besides the walking.. it doesn’t affect me too terribly bad. Hby?
@@candicewheaton9899 I'm really lucky with my cp, I can't write for long periods of time and I find some sports really difficult but I'm fine with 99% of things in life tbh. I get a lot of muscle spasms but most of them are extremely minor and just cause my eyelids to twitch or my hands to shake a little bit
@@camorangergaming5559 yeah it’s pretty much the same for me, I don’t have really issues with anything else besides my legs, but I definitely get plenty of muscle spasms and my legs shake A LOT. My hips and lower back give me the most issues but it’s pretty tolerable for the most part. Just dating and meeting new people is what makes it hard. I can’t meet people online because I hate having to tell people lol

Maysoon Zayid is a living example of what extent a disabled person can with right attitude and taking everything lightly. Inspiring talk that is brimming with full of life and energy. Highly recommended.
Right attitude, a supportive family and almost no thanks to the state or the healthcare system. Imagine if her family had been worse off, they wouldn't have sent her to dancing lessons, college and so on. I don't think she'd be able to achieve what she has. As positive her story is and as much of a downer I am, the lesson here isn't only to stay positive, unfortunately.
I kinda think that it would be nice if you wouldn't need the "right attitude" to get where you want. The main question is, would it be possible to disregard the disability and just judge people by their abilities. This is natural to almost all of us. I'm a darn good musician, but i really suck a maths. So it would be kinda odd if someone would feel uncomfortable giving me a Gig because i don't know what the f-ing pythagorean theorem is for.

I agree completely that this should be the case; however, the primary distinction between your example of music and maths vs disability is that people see disability before anything else. It is visible in ways that musical talent and mathematical skill are not. This visibility causes people to make quick judgments (our brains love to do this all the time). Here is to hoping that we will one day live in a world where people are judged on things that matter.
maggit I have never received aid from the government and as I said in my talk I won a scholarship to Arizona State University. When I was born, my family were new immigrants and far from well off which is why I went to tiny local dancing school that charged $33/month instead of physical therapy. As far as the state my parents had to sue them (Probono lawyer b4 you get the wrong idea) in order to mainstream me in the public school system. Also a lot of my healing happened in the 3rd world not stateside. I give credit where it is due. My parents went on to be financially successful but $ had little to do with who I became.
That doesn't disprove my point. And it was not my intention to accuse your family of anything. I was merely pointing out that believing in oneself is not the only thing that influences success and self-realisation. Despite having said you had help and support from your family (who had to fight the government to help you) the message that most people got from it was:' hey, be positive, everything will be OK and you can achieve anything if you want it' - the typical American Dream bs. I think that your family's struggles actually show something much different and viewing your story as such is oversimplifying things and covering real problems such as healthcare, exclusion, sexism, etc. All of the things you actually touched upon.

+AtlasRedux well, we say "Allah yerhamak yaba"when the father dies. So I made it simple for English speakers to understand what it means. The most common verse used in such case is R.I.P .... Note, the meanings you mentioned are also correct, however, we don't say "Allah yerhamak" in such order unless someone is dead...

I wouldn't say she is especially "funnier" but, I mean, she turned her disability to her advantage here. None of the "able-bodied" stand up comedians can be funny the way she is

As a mother to a daughter with CP this girl is amazing I love it! She makes humor about CP and shows everyone that being disabled is not a set back its just something she deals with and move forward. My daughter was told she would never walk or talk either by the doctors boy were they wrong she is walking talking and proving them all wrong :)

I'm a Physical Therapist AND a Palestinian and this put the biggest smile on my face. I am currently working with CP kids mostly and it's so challenging to say the least but every time we notice an improvement it's honestly the best feeling ever, I can't put it into words. To all those with CP, or any form of "disability", don't let society define your abilities... disability is a state of mind you CAN overcome it when you start to believe you can. Also, I've seen so many cases (especially in pediatrics) when the doctors said patient can't walk ever again, and with the grace of God and INTENSIVE Physio they were able to take their first steps. So hang in there, and don't ever lose hope. So proud of her and so proud to be a Physical Therapist. This is why I wanted to become one.

mam is spino muscular dystrophy of both lower limbs and upper limbs effected is related to cp and is complete paralysis is cp
Muscular dystrophy and paralysis are completely separate from CP.
+BIKASH SAHOO no it's not the same... the progression of both diseases are not the same... the way you can be affected are different. CP can happen at different stages pregnany (before in the uterus, during labor, and after) and it happens when theres an injury in the brain (lesion) preventing oxygen from nurishing that lesion... leads to CP. For MD it's genetic... it shows up later in the kids stage (after a child walks even they start regressing and showing MD symptoms)... for CP it happens before 3 years old... after 3 years it's not considered CP! CP can be either hypotonia hyporeflexia and muscle weakness... or hypertonia hyperreflexia...it depends on if its UML/LML ... for MD it's always hypotonia muscle weakness!!

Angelo Torres we have to remember with a strong mind, when we read the negative comments but some people are ignorant because of the environment they grew up around. They have some type of internal struggle and it's best just to pray for them and ignore the comment. But nonetheless it is a challenge

This is a talk above and beyond all limits. I absolutely enjoyed every millisecond of it, this is not just inspirational, this is light-hearted, educational, motivational and downright hilarious. I wanna be Maysoon Zayid when I grow up. It‘d really be an extraordinary honor.
I am a muslim mum with 3 children who all have severe possible lifelong needs including my youngest daughter who is 7 and has severe quadraplegia cerebral palsy and will never be able to walk she is in wheeltube tubefed and on 5 daily medications and a youngest son who is 5 has severe low functioning autism and eldest daughter is 11 has globlal developmental delay has severe learning and speech problems our life is hard and challenging but i am thankful to God (Allah) forgiving me a chance to be their mother and i wouldnt change it for the world, they are my precious angels and im so proud tohave them in my life

How long in your pregnancy did uou find out that your kids would have these condition? Or did you only find out after birth? Is there some genetic conditions that had caused all your children to be born with some type of condition? Or was it due to the doctor doing something wrong? Or genetics?

I clicked on the video to see what it's about, and stayed for the whole thing. She's hilarious! Her sense of humor is on a high level, not like some comedians who think they more insultive, sexist or hateful they are, the more people will laugh.

My son has Spastic Hemiplegic CP and at just 2 years old is already the little entertainer, loves to make everyone around him laugh, is so sociable, and if he ever sees me cry he'll bring me all of his favorite things to make me feel better. People with CP (or any "dis" ability for that matter) shouldn't be looked down upon. It takes a strong mother to raise a child who needs just a little bit of extra love. So the last thing we need is for someone to look down on our child... mother bear comes out every time.... I give props to your family, that's some innovative thinking to find alternatives for therapy! :))

The connection for me was strongest with her sense of humor (it's similar to my own), though when she spoke of her father, I did get a little choked up, because her love for him was more than evident in her eyes.

I was originally not even going to watch the whole thing as I thought - ugh, 14 minutes? This woman is amazing. Inspirational and hilarious! My best friend is Palestinian and I thought of her many times throughout this - especially at the Arab mom using her slipper part ;) Maysoon, you are great.

Maysoon you are a college educated, strong woman who's traveled the world doing your comedy and inspiring countless people- men and women- I am ashamed of how you and so many other talented people are treated on the internet. Most of these ppl who spew their hate with negative comments will not amount to much if they continue with their ignorance, however you seem like the type of person who would pray for them anyway. Your bravery in pushing forward is to be celebrated and respected !! Thank you, i feel as if i could some day be a comic but have never made any strides towards that dream, and now you've shown me another reason why i should not doubt myself and press on............

It’s also worth remembering that aging in particular overlaps a lot with disability. Disability becomes much more prevalent as people age, and the percentage of the population that is elderly is huge. 2 in 5 people 65 and over have a disability. The large aging population is part of what makes the disability community much larger than people tend to assume.

All these people rising up to "defend" yet you use the wrong arms, what is even worse is that here in the USA most (not all)of the people who defend Muslims/Jews/Gays do it not because they care, but because they are worried about how they themselves are viewed by others. How about loving All people regardless of who they are.

This talk taught me two main things. First, there is much work to do yet regarding acceptance, respect, and tolerance in our society. This woman is doing her part to minimize the prejudice against disabled people and foreigners. Second, this also shows us the importance of the parents in our lives, the way they grew you up can change the world.

A huge Inspiration to us all
At the start of the video (1:20) she takes a moment to say "I'm not inspirational", because "you're an inspiration" is something that any disabled person gets whenever they achieve anything, and it's really dehumanising and awful to be told "The misery you go through makes me feel like a better person" and yet you STILL do it automatically.
She is the prime example what the power of a fathers love can do
Inarguably the best Ted talk I've listened to. She's incredibly cute and hilarious, I'm so stunned by her storytelling skills that I forgot she had cerebral palsy!
