The xbox 360 problems were almost certainly caused by new (at the time) lead-free solder. This wouldn't have been directly related to overheating, but cycles of hot and cold would have been more likely to cause failure. There were several other similar hardware failures around the same time. A friend of mine had a laptop with a graphics chip which suffered from similar issues; when I investigated, it seemed to be common. It was still under warranty, and Dell replaced the unit for free. The cooler is definitely heat pipe based; not just "chunks of copper". The other chip is not the "north bridge". This was doable in a console format. Current top of the line graphics cards are 250 to 300 Watts, and current top-end cpus are 84 to 130 Watts. Power is directly related to cost. People never consider what it takes to deliver 300 Watts to a chip (at low voltage) and to remove that much heat. It takes much more expensive power supplies, power delivery circuitry, and cooling solutions. It can be done in a relatively small space these days (see the Mac Pro), but not cheaply. The amount of processing power necessary is directly related to the target resolution. The xbox one seems to be targeted at 720p (1280x720), which is low by pc standards, but okay as far as televisions are concerned. Many people will not really notice the difference between 720p and 1080p at their normal viewing distance. This doesn't need massive gpu power like high-end graphics cards which might have to drive two 1080p displays or more. The cpus are individually relatively low performance, but there is 8 of them. Also, most current games are not cpu limited anyway; I know many people gaming with older cpus. Alex Denofre yeah i understand that you can physically replace the drive, what I'm asking is what happens after that. Does the machine work? will it get banned? will it not boot at all?
Alex Denofre alright, i remember that for the 360, you had to have a special partition(or similar) from an authentic Microsoft 250 GB drive and use that to spoof an off the shelf hard-drive with that, before it would work with the 360. that meant that you could only run partitions as big as the ones Microsoft sold. You're saying none of this carries over to the XBOX ONE's way of thinking? That you could just clone the data from the standard 500 GB xbox one hdd onto a 3 TB drive, and it would have the full size without any repercussions?

I usually install my games to the hard drive so that it's not noisy. I have the original Xbox 360 elite..
couldn't you wipe it and install an OS like Linux?
Kinda neat to see the guts of it.
But .. does that mean that this is a CPU/GPU merged ? In terms of heat, oh boy ..
Look, even the console peasants are laughing at Apple's slaves.
Cetoke Lmaooo. This made me piss my pants.
Cetoke What time in the video is this? I have got to show other people. (Yes, I didn't bother to watch the video because the comments are more entertaining)
Zugashii Around 5 minute mark
+Cetoke It's so relieving to hear that. I hate Apple, and I am NEVER buying any of their products. Android in my opinion is still better.
+Cetoke Are you speaking of the foreign workers, who *look* like slaves? Because Apple does not own any slaves, as I recall.
Can you really replace the hardrive on the xbox one?
does the xbox even work if you do that? will microsoft allow it, or will they just ban you for not buying their $5000 microsoft branded harddrive?
Alex Denofre
yeah i understand that you can physically replace the drive, what I'm asking is what happens after that.
Does the machine work?
will it get banned?
will it not boot at all?
Alex Denofre
alright, i remember that for the 360, you had to have a special partition(or similar) from an authentic Microsoft 250 GB drive and use that to spoof an off the shelf hard-drive with that, before it would work with the 360.
that meant that you could only run partitions as big as the ones Microsoft sold.
You're saying none of this carries over to the XBOX ONE's way of thinking?
That you could just clone the data from the standard 500 GB xbox one hdd onto a 3 TB drive, and it would have the full size without any repercussions?
devildoll89 in an estimated .5 to 2 secconds....might have to build your own bios version but sure ill upgrade it and it will be soooo fasttt ohhmmeeeggeeee lol................... my friend this guy is not worth your time.
Looking at the Xbox one, I wonder if you could install Water Cooler Corsair H100i?
the button on the side is to sync your controller to the console if it ever got desynced
"whats this switch here" 8:20
facepalm
That side button is the good old bind button
The only thing good about this is the heat sink
Hecarimgoes boom You forgot the USB ports
5 minutes into the video I realise that this is the new Xbox, not the first one. Nice naming scheme MS.
Forgot about the NSA chip...
I was gonna comment on the bearded guy but it looks like people did it for me!
Destroying an xbox one?! This video makes me wanna cry
can you replace the fan to a water cooled one without it thinking you are modding it and getting banned?
+Cosmic Lightning --- NOPE
+Manuel figures. Stupid Microsoft. I should just stop wasting money on Consoles that you can't modify.
LOL your comment. So hilarious :P
+Manuel why? Are you a douchebag or trying to be be genuine fucktard? Either way, you don't sound likable. bye
Finally another human who plays peggle! A first in my 19 years of life on this planet
Good review I thought some people's expectations of a scientific forensic teardown may have been excessive
cant believe the xbox one is 7 years old now.
Have to tried, plugging a different bluray drive, into the xbox one's motherboard to see if it functions?
154 people are xbox fanboys hating on their loved console dismantled instead of trying to LEARN the system
Thank you for this insight 👍
Motherboards really look like cities, definitely.
Seems to me that both guys were unprepared to talk about this.
The squiggly conduits are quite common in electronics. Almost all pc motherboards have them.
I like how I got an add for PS4 before watching this
3.5" hdd? Jesus its heavy enough already
+Lucas Walker I thought Xboner uses 2.5? The PS4 does.
+BushidoEffect3 it does, i was saying its heavy enough with a laptop drive so it would be even heavier with a desktop drive.
+JJ Walker if you read my last reply instead of being ignorant I stated I already knew it has a 2.5" drive. I said it was already heavy enough with a 2.5" drive
+BushidoEffect3 X-boner
indeed
I don't think these guys know what they're talking about..
1. What they're constantly calling the CPU is actually the APU..
2. What they're calling the Northbridge is actually the Southbridge
Seriously I really hope these guys arnt considered experts at iFixit
i dont get why they didnt go top notch. That woldve been their chance to rebuild the image of Microsoft. They couldve gone so much further. I mean none need 4k but at least being able to give a nice 60fps 1080p Experience to every game
They solved the red ring of death only to find another on called "the coffee grinder".
What speed of light? It is electricity NOT light! Electrons in powered circuit doesn't move at speed of light - it is not even 1% of speed of light. It closer to 1m/hour!
The length of traces have nothing to do with speed anyway! It is only about inductance!
If you know nothing about electronics and physics behind electronics, DO NOT talk about electronics! You make another bunch of idiots, who will believe what you say is truth, while it have nothing to do with real world!
At the risk of shitposting, coming here from a Linus tech tips video of the same period makes this hardware kind of depressing.
Disc drive issue is pretty prevalent on the One. So much so that you get a free game if you have one (And you repair using the advanced exchange.)
This video. It's pretty good. Yeah, pretty good.
Wait can you plug in an external storage unit? Didn't hear him correctly
Can it be upgraded with an SSD? And please make a video how to do so, I think they mentioned software for it.
Dear John Ford, please come and rescue me.
who watching this 2017
Have you ever replaced a Ethernet port? Or is it even possible? My xbox one will not recognize my internet hard line when plugged in.
Why is that board so big all it is an APU and ram
it looks cool dude
***** oh and i don't even own one to expensive i built a pc how about you explain to me why its such a big mother board if its just an apu and some ram smart guy how bout you otherwise shut your mouth
Sorry commas I quite frankly don't care about my grammar it was on my cellphone for one and its not like your my english teacher and i just wrote an essay for you. i am just saying its an awful big motherboard for something that should be small and convenient thats one of the reasons my friends don't game on pc they see my pc and go holy shit thats a pc you could hide a body in there and of course i say thats rather small for pc gaming its a fractal design core 1000 just so you know than they laugh and we go do something in my room What i'm trying to say here is it should be much smaller. Sorry for the lack of commas i just don't care
It could be to keep heat more spread out from the RAM and APU along with the chipsets.
There's a big difference between a SoC and an APU. You still have a discrete network chipset, power management circuitry, and so on.
They arent chunks of copper, theyre tubes with a vapour of some sort inside kept at high pressure.
Heat pipes use low pressure, not high. Lowering the pressure causes the working fluid (which may just be water) to boil at a low temperature and also carry the heat across the heat pipe very quickly.
Great video post, "What's Inside Microsoft's Xbox One Console".
They are joined again by iFixit's Kyle Wiens for a thorough analysis of the components that make up Microsoft's Xbox One game console. Kyle walks us through each piece, discussing opportunities for repair and swapping out parts.
I like this type of video but I would like to see it a little more rehearsed and less question asking back and forth between the presenter and the guest, at least for this kind of video, should be more of a walk through style thing and not show and tell.
I always thought there was confetti and cheetos inside.
What's not shown in this video is that they are STILL using the fucking X-Clamp for attaching the heatsink to the mobo.
These guys are impressed by one 120mm fan. Dirty peasants lol.
Pfff, it's just unusual to find a 120mm fan in a console, no need to call them peasants
@@pazus8476 The culture has changed since then, 6-7 years ago when I wrote that comment I was much younger and PCMasterrace was a non cringe meme. Obviously didn't age that well.
so, was there any thermal compound on the XBox One CPU?
These guys annoyed me plus they were clueless and wrong on the stuff they were saying.
"They're slowing light down!" amongst other things. Yikes...
since there is so much room in the console I think it can be modified alot hopefully micro soft releases a 2 TB internal hard drive and other accessories
Such a huge box but the brick still isn't integrated? WOW.
The SS on the USB port definitely means superspeed, right?
Yes, 1.0 was "Full-Bandwidth", now called "Full-Speed". 2.0 is "Hi-Speed". 3.0 is SuperSpeed. and has an "SS" logo.
So would it be possible to put the graphics card in and make a by 730 gaming pc better?
tested really needs to get people who know what they are talking about, its pretty pathetic with all the factual errors in this video, they need to take the time to educate themselves before they start the cameras, its just spreading misinformation across the internet.
get your shit together guys, come on.
take the thing about heatpipes for instance, if they have an audience this large they should really strive to know what the hell they are talking about
"at least 2 layers" lmfao. well, yeah you could say that & the number of layers IS PRINTED ON THE BOARD lol
