This has sparked yet another project for me. It’s a wonderful idea and from my own quick google, the pot filtering is a well known method dating far back in human history. They even threw a silver coin in the pot to help kill bacteria. Some pots may be sprayed with a clear coat is where the sanding may be needed to remove it.. To help prime the pot. One might place the pot in a bucket or bin big enough to submerge it in hot water and allowed to soak like over night.

I repurposed one of my dark colored rainbarrels into a rain catchment barrel by moving it into the yard as opposed to keeping it where it caught runoff from the roof. I will be moving another barrel out into the yard as soon as I get it emptied..... I have gathered the materials to make several of the water filters. This is such a genius way to create a long lasting, very good water filter & catchment system! Thank you for sharing this!

Folks It is a ceramic flower pot. Buy 5 at a time they are dirt cheap. When you decide to clean your filter - STOP! Throw it out and replace it with a new one. You can scrub that ceramic all day you are not getting rid of the trapped sediment. It is now inside the ceramic. Just replace it, I ran a Reverse Osmosis water system for a Regional Dialysis Center, this filter is not a new concept, I been using in Thailand for many years. Nice vid tho,,,,

In the tropics I came across 'drip stones' which were put on window ledges to produce cooled filtered water. Your terracotta filter made me wonder if you could do something similar? Perhaps use a clay chimney pot for the body? Probably only useful in the summer, but that's when cool drinking water is so refreshing anyway. More power to your elbow!
WOW!! What a great cheap efficient way to filter water! Strictly out of curiosity, I would love to see the test results from city water, versus your rain water; both having gone through your filter. Only because I wonder if the terracotta would maybe filter out some of the chemicals the water treatment plants add to it and how much it would remove? No matter either way though; this is GREAT! If your water source was poor to begin with, you could easily have a plastic tub on top with gravel sand and charcoal for the water to filter through first. This is a wonderful idea!!

For those wanting to know The 12 inch terra cotta planters use a 1 and 1/8 sink plug. Note 12 inch is the description. I believe that the diameter. The 8 inch is a smaller hole. I believe a 15/16 cork will fit. Going to check next time I go to the city. The 12 inch also is the right size for a 5 gallon bucket. And the pots at Lowe's Home depot are Italy terra cotta. I never looked until I seen his video. Btw Make sure the ones you buy are not cracked. First store I went to every one of the 12:inch were cracked. Matter of fact every one of the other sizes were also crack except to one 8 inch I bought.

I made a version of this filter as soon as I saw your video. I made it with a glass water dispenser and a flower pot made in Germany. Unfortunately, the pot was probably too small or the clay was too fine and the water had a hard time filtering through. I was averaging about a drop every few hours, lol. I even sanded the pot inside and out. I do highly recommend finding a natural cork to plug the bottom. Your terracotta might be more porous than mine, but it's also possible that the wooden plug is leaking and allowing more water to flow through. Craft stores sometimes have natural corks, but they might be mixed in with decorative corks made with glue. I went down a research hole after I found your video. Terracotta filters, such as the ones made by Potters Without Boarders, are made with a 50/50 mix of clay and sawdust. The sawdust burns away in the kiln, leaving tiny holes in the clay that allow water to pass through more easily. Plain terracotta flower pots do naturally have microscopic holes within them that allow water to pass, but the flow rate is abysmal without the sawdust step... Clays from different locations would obviously have different properties and grain sizes, however. I found another crafty man on youtube who made a filter with a much larger pot. His flowrate was a few gallons every 24 hours. Not great, but better than my set up. The larger pot, added weight of the water, and larger surface area helps to improve water flow. I'll try out a larger pot tomorrow and update this comment. I've also started looking for terracotta filter manufacturers who are willing to ship to the USA, but no luck so far. Honestly, it might be easier to take a pottery class! So besides finding a larger pot, I might also try Itallian terracotta or a clay olla pot.
so easy to check for leaks - just lift the pot and see how it drips- It should be 'sweating' evenly all over below the water line with no drips from the cork or bung.
@@joanobrien722 From my research, yes. It can take several hours for the pot to be primed with water. However, the clay may still not be pours enough to allow for an easy flow rate, as mine wasn't. I ended up turning my pot filter into a traditional charcoal filter. The base layer is natural iron sand from ebay, the middle is activated charcoal from the pet fish store, and the top layer is Zeolithe from the pet fish store. I plugged with hole with cotton as a filter and sprayed the rocks with colloidal silver. I washed every layer of sand/rock separately under running water. Water tasted like clay for the first few days, but now its very soft and clear.
Filtered rainwater will always be acidic, too acidic, what they call "aggressive". Aggressive water does a lot of things you don't want it to do. Get an aquarium ph kit. Test and then add phUP dropwise and retest until you are at 7-7.2. You will protect your health. It really is a step you shouldn't omit if you are drinking rainwater long-term.

The link in the last video didn’t bring up a specific strength of silver. Could you please explain what concentration is best and do you just spray it or soak it on the inside and outside. Thank you.

Great system I'd be tempted to use it without the collodial silver, as I'd be more worried about turning blue than about catching anything from the filtered rain water.

My rain barrels get algae inside during summer. Do yours too? I am using charcoal from my mason oven for "biocoal" or terra preta, but I will use coal as a filter for various things, eventually for drinking water unless flower pots suffice. Thanks for the video.
you may need to find the right sized cooking "stock pot", and convert it by drilling the hole for the tap. I have used a Stefani ceramic 'filtering' system that I didn't want to have to pay to replace the ceramic candle that does the filtering, as they are becoming more expensive.
Hallo! After having watched your first Video (?) oh this we went straight out and got what was needed! Quite proud of our version we could hardly keeps ourselves from constantly turning the tap to watch our first "selfmade" drinkingwater! 1 day later unfortunately still nothing but a fine coat of sweat around the terracotta pott. I wonder, if the clay hast something to do with it? So, now, thanks to the heavy-lead-problem I will be out again later to get hold of an italian make! Fingers crossed, that is the solution!?? After another 3 days I unfortunately must say, it wasn't. The Pott hast let through about 5 ml. As I am getting rather nervous on Not having our own emergency supply I have bought a Berky filter. How disappointing.
At the very least you have produced a great video. As far as whether or not this is a good method of filtering water, seems to me the ultimate test will be your own health over time. Considering that, may I ask how long you have been doing this? Have you sort of kept notes on your own health? So far have you seen any negative effects that might possibly be attributed to the water you are drinking? I may like to try this myself however I need to know for a fact this is a method of thoroughly purifying water before I have my family drinking this water.
The same people who scream about eating off stoneware but they cook their food in stainless steel that has been recycled from Churnable. 🤣 You did a great job and hey even the bad comments count for the algorithm so keep them pacified and continue to share your wonderful stuff with us. If you feel the need for a decent scourer you can simply make a paste from a few drops of water and some Bicarbonate of Soda. It to has anti microbial properties and is a great cleaning agent! If you do make one with a glass outer collection container watch out for light causing growth of nasties!

You can buy a clay disk with silver and place it over the hole in the bottom. If you pour slowly, the disk shouldn't budge the silver in the clay will help purify the water just needs to be replaced about every 6 month or so because it will get dirty from any contaminants that might be in your water😊👍❤️
I think you're patient to a fault - and your first video was beautifully presented and with all the information. I'd be soo interested if you've done anything on power generation and in particular if you know anything about Ridgeblade types of turbines. They were developed in UK but seem to have been bought up by a Canadian company as part of the Power Collective. Even with a grant solar is far too expensive in this country - Ireland, so I'm looking for an alternative.

Hello from Tampa Florida. Wow. I absolutely adore your personality and content. Its right up my alley. I've been wanting one of these gravity water filters but goodness they are expensive. Holy cow did you just make it super possible for me to have my own. I will be looking for a Italian Made Ceramic Terracota Pot and Holder for this. I can't believe just how afforadable you made this for everyone who views your channel. I would love to know what this filters out. Does this clear out chlorine, flouride, metals? I'm so curious. I see some of these filters you can buy that are 99.99% clear of everything. They really do seem great. Is this as good? Seems like it takes the same amount of time to filter through and its a longer process then the store bought Brita filters and such.

Hello from Brooksville. I'm also going to make one. But one commenter said they found terra cotta pots from Lowe's that are made in Italy but they hardly drain at all. So maybe if we just soak it in water over night to 'prime' it, it will work. If you've made this by now, please let me know, as I'll be looking for resources here in our area.

Silver itself is also an anti-microbial. To further improve its properties you could add small amounts of pure silver to your various reservoirs.

The 12 inch terra cotta planters use a 1 and 1/8 sink plug.
Note 12 inch is the description. I believe that the diameter.
The 8 inch is a smaller hole. I believe a 15/16 cork will fit.
Going to check next time I go to the city.
The 12 inch also is the right size for a 5 gallon bucket.
And the pots at Lowe's Home depot are Italy terra cotta.
I never looked until I seen his video.

Make sure the ones you buy are not cracked. First store I went to every one of the 12:inch were cracked.
Matter of fact every one of the other sizes were also crack except to one 8 inch I bought.

I made a version of this filter as soon as I saw your video. I made it with a glass water dispenser and a flower pot made in Germany. Unfortunately, the pot was probably too small or the clay was too fine and the water had a hard time filtering through. I was averaging about a drop every few hours, lol. I even sanded the pot inside and out. I do highly recommend finding a natural cork to plug the bottom. Your terracotta might be more porous than mine, but it's also possible that the wooden plug is leaking and allowing more water to flow through. Craft stores sometimes have natural corks, but they might be mixed in with decorative corks made with glue.
I went down a research hole after I found your video. Terracotta filters, such as the ones made by Potters Without Boarders, are made with a 50/50 mix of clay and sawdust. The sawdust burns away in the kiln, leaving tiny holes in the clay that allow water to pass through more easily. Plain terracotta flower pots do naturally have microscopic holes within them that allow water to pass, but the flow rate is abysmal without the sawdust step... Clays from different locations would obviously have different properties and grain sizes, however.
I found another crafty man on youtube who made a filter with a much larger pot. His flowrate was a few gallons every 24 hours. Not great, but better than my set up. The larger pot, added weight of the water, and larger surface area helps to improve water flow. I'll try out a larger pot tomorrow and update this comment. I've also started looking for terracotta filter manufacturers who are willing to ship to the USA, but no luck so far. Honestly, it might be easier to take a pottery class!
So besides finding a larger pot, I might also try Itallian terracotta or a clay olla pot.
so easy to check for leaks - just lift the pot and see how it drips- It should be 'sweating' evenly all over below the water line with no drips from the cork or bung.
even with the larger pot, this doesn't seem like a viable option for me. The terracotta I have access must be too dense.
I bought mine at Lowes store, pot made in Italy. Been over an hour. One drop so far. I used a actual cork. Am I supposed to soak pot first. ?
@@joanobrien722 From my research, yes. It can take several hours for the pot to be primed with water. However, the clay may still not be pours enough to allow for an easy flow rate, as mine wasn't.
I ended up turning my pot filter into a traditional charcoal filter. The base layer is natural iron sand from ebay, the middle is activated charcoal from the pet fish store, and the top layer is Zeolithe from the pet fish store. I plugged with hole with cotton as a filter and sprayed the rocks with colloidal silver. I washed every layer of sand/rock separately under running water.
Water tasted like clay for the first few days, but now its very soft and clear.

Filtered rainwater will always be acidic, too acidic, what they call "aggressive". Aggressive water does a lot of things you don't want it to do. Get an aquarium ph kit. Test and then add phUP dropwise and retest until you are at 7-7.2. You will protect your health. It really is a step you shouldn't omit if you are drinking rainwater long-term.

Question though.... I am not sure what colloidal silver to use as far as concentration is concerned. The link in the last video didn’t bring up a specific strength of silver. Could you please explain what concentration is best and do you just spray it or soak it on the inside and outside. Thank you.

Great system I'd be tempted to use it without the collodial silver, as I'd be more worried about turning blue than about catching anything from the filtered rain water.
Oh - STOP IT lol. search it on the net- you will only find photos of one man turned blue- cos he was an idiot who made it badly and drank litres of it daily for years. It diddnt kill him.

I am using charcoal from my mason oven for "biocoal" or terra preta, but I will use coal as a filter for various things, eventually for drinking water unless flower pots suffice. Thanks for the video.

you may need to find the right sized cooking "stock pot", and convert it by drilling the hole for the tap. I have used a Stefani ceramic 'filtering' system that I didn't want to have to pay to replace the ceramic candle that does the filtering, as they are becoming more expensive.

Hallo! After having watched your first Video (?) oh this we went straight out and got what was needed! Quite proud of our version we could hardly keeps ourselves from constantly turning the tap to watch our first "selfmade" drinkingwater! 1 day later unfortunately still nothing but a fine coat of sweat around the terracotta pott. I wonder, if the clay hast something to do with it? So, now, thanks to the heavy-lead-problem I will be out again later to get hold of an italian make! Fingers crossed, that is the solution!?? After another 3 days I unfortunately must say, it wasn't. The Pott hast let through about 5 ml. As I am getting rather nervous on Not having our own emergency supply I have bought a Berky filter. How disappointing.

At the very least you have produced a great video. As far as whether or not this is a good method of filtering water, seems to me the ultimate test will be your own health over time. Considering that, may I ask how long you have been doing this? Have you sort of kept notes on your own health? So far have you seen any negative effects that might possibly be attributed to the water you are drinking? I may like to try this myself however I need to know for a fact this is a method of thoroughly purifying water before I have my family drinking this water.

If you feel the need for a decent scourer you can simply make a paste from a few drops of water and some Bicarbonate of Soda. It to has anti microbial properties and is a great cleaning agent!
If you do make one with a glass outer collection container watch out for light causing growth of nasties!

You can paint the exterior of your glass container with a very dark color to prevent algae formation.

Once I make the silver spray, am I simply coating the inside of the terracotta pot by spraying it and should I reapply the spray every time after cleaning it?

You can buy a clay disk with silver and place it over the hole in the bottom. If you pour slowly, the disk shouldn't budge the silver in the clay will help purify the water just needs to be replaced about every 6 month or so because it will get dirty from any contaminants that might be in your water😊👍❤️
I think you're patient to a fault - and your first video was beautifully presented and with all the information. I'd be soo interested if you've done anything on power generation and in particular if you know anything about Ridgeblade types of turbines. They were developed in UK but seem to have been bought up by a Canadian company as part of the Power Collective. Even with a grant solar is far too expensive in this country - Ireland, so I'm looking for an alternative.

Wow. I absolutely adore your personality and content. Its right up my alley. I've been wanting one of these gravity water filters but goodness they are expensive. Holy cow did you just make it super possible for me to have my own. I will be looking for a Italian Made Ceramic Terracota Pot and Holder for this. I can't believe just how afforadable you made this for everyone who views your channel. I would love to know what this filters out. Does this clear out chlorine, flouride, metals? I'm so curious. I see some of these filters you can buy that are 99.99% clear of everything. They really do seem great. Is this as good? Seems like it takes the same amount of time to filter through and its a longer process then the store bought Brita filters and such.

Hello from Brooksville. I'm also going to make one. But one commenter said they found terra cotta pots from Lowe's that are made in Italy but they hardly drain at all. So maybe if we just soak it in water over night to 'prime' it, it will work. If you've made this by now, please let me know, as I'll be looking for resources here in our area.
