The first time (and actually only time, regrettably) I saw My Chemical Romance live was at a show in I think 2004 or 2005. They were opening for someone, I don't remember who now. I wasn't the biggest fan of MCR, as I was entirely too cool for mall emo. However, when MCR went on stage, they blasted "I'm Not Okay" and holy fucking shit did they kill it. Honestly, one of the best live shows I've ever seen. I wanted to hate it so that I could hold up my mental image of how cool I thought I was because MCR was too basic for me, but I couldn't. They were incredible.

It’s interesting how MCR is seen as *the* soundtrack to 2000s teenage angst when I’m Not Okay is really their only song that’s actually about being a teenager. Most of their others are about comic book horror stuff like demon cowboys and whatnot.
But yeah that’s what an early single that good will do to your image. As an unabashed MCR stan I can easily name a dozen of their songs I’d take over I’m Not Okay, but the song and especially the video are iconic as hell.
Edit: I somehow forgot about the song Teenagers on their next album, but even that song is written from the perspective of a concerned older guy. Though it still makes sense for edgy teens to latch onto it

As a lifelong hardcore RHCP fan, I must say they are my favorite band despite AK's singing capabilities (or lack thereof). The other three guys are so great you learn to hear past Kiedis, or you even learn to like his goofy lyrics and underwhelming vocal ability. Flea, Chad, John, Josh (Klinghoffer) and Dave (Navarro) are all amazing musicians and there's no way I'd ever let Kiedis stopping my love for those guys. That being said, Kiedis is arguably better these days, especially in The Return of the Dream Canteen and in his live performances. Nowhere near the level of his bandmates, but surely way better than he used to be (especially if compared to BSSM or before that).

Very well said, and here's something to remember about Tony K- He may not have great vocals, but Blood Sugar Sex Magic dropped at a time that just connected with so many people like myself. The balance of juvenile lyrics that are just fun (Give It Away) and the deeper ones (Breaking the Girl, Could have Lied) really struck a chord with a lot of us Gen-Xers. It was a combination of not giving a poop, and caring very deeply, both of which felt very sincere. Yes, it's a paradox, but that pretty much sums up Gen-X.

I was watching music videos and the one for I'm Not Okay came on. I was instantly attracted to the sound of the chord progressions and the aesthetic of the band and was hooked from there on out, was obsessed with the band, 3 Cheers for Sweet revenge, and their first album. I started to tail off during the Black Parade, and haven't really listened to any of their stuff after that, although I always gave it a shot, and saw them live with Taking Back Sunday in 08 (I think?). Hello Finn, greetings from Germany. I am one of those Red Hot Chili Peppers listeners, or at least used to be (Kind of lost interest after Stadium Arcadium). Always I have been a bit surprised about your opinion when it comes to RHCP. But since everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and taste is basically nothing to argue about I never commented on that one. But since you so specifically asked for it in this video, I will do so now. I discovered this band quite late, actually when they released Californication in 1999. Up to today I think this Album and the follow up By The Way are my favorite RHCP-Albums (followed by BSS&M and Stadium Arcadium). Back in the days those two albums were constantly playing in my Opel cassette deck (No CD-Player on board). Up to today I think Californication and By The Way are masterpieces . So for me it was kind of weird to hear you say that everything after BSS&M is basically not worth listening to. The aforementioned albums I think are also pretty high on the list of the majority of RHCP fans, So I guess, that might be the reason why your stance on RHCP is quite unpopular. As someone who started listening and appreciating the RHCP with Californication (I recently turned 40) it is also kind of difficult to go back to the albums they released before BSS&M. I tried Mothers Milk for example, but that just wouldnt do it for me. As for Stadium Arcadium I think they should have selected the best tracks and put them on one CD (as is the case with most double albums) With that being said (;-)), I like to say that I really enjoy your content. (Even though my musical taste offen differs from yours, but thst is not the end of the world). Keep up the good work!

I love Katy Perry's first 2 albums. That first one leans the hardest on her roots in rock, and a few songs on the second album like Hummingbird Heartbeat and Circle the Drain still have a bit of that rock side to them. Katy said in a video with Glamour Magazine in 2018 that she'd probably make a few changes to the lyrics to I Kissed a Girl if she wrote it today, because it was somewhat based in stereotypes about bisexuality circa 2008. Song still slaps, though. One of the Boys is a killer pop rock album.

MCR are my fav Band and I'm a fanboy since i first heard them with "Na Na Na" in 2010.
But MCR's best song is "I'm Not Okay" it might be on the second place for most known Songs. But you can't tell me this is still one of the most catchy alternative Songs of all time. Also it's pretty clear that MCR have metal and even metalcore influences. Like, they Touren with Shai Hulud, Misery Signals, Underoath and gave a shoutout to Shai Hulud on Three cheers (i believe).
Three Cheers is and will forever be one of my fav albums of all time with "Sempiternal" by BMTH and "Love Is Not Enough" by Casey.

That was my first MCR song too. I actually loved EVERY song in Three Cheers. Their first album was really impressive too. I remember it having more of a horror punk feel than emo. Then I stopped listening to them so I never understood the hype about the Black Parade. Maybe I should revisit it.

As someone who loves Bullets and Three Cheers (best MCR album imo), The Black Parade is phenomenal. But I always separate it from the others because, to me, it’s their rock opera and it’s all like “look what else we’re capable of”.
The lyrics, the arrangement, everything hits the mark on that album
