"We Will Rock You" is clearly #1 on any rock anthems list. But, you could tell due to the simplicity of the song they were nonchalant about playing it.
He's singing 10 seconds at a time at a very controlled output. Singing entire songs with long, connected phrases, chorus', verses are actually where the challenge is
Considering that Layne Staley didn't want to sing when they put the band together I consider the fact that the band pushed him to sing was the absolute best "putting a band together" decision of all time.
Baba O’riley was the first song I thought of. To me, it defines what a rock anthem is. Simple, bombastic, and youthful. Maybe it’s the big dramatic crashing cymbals, the piano pounding out the opening chords, or the way the intro builds into the iconic verses. It’s hard to put it in words, but it’s just got that undeniable anthemic quality to it.
@@breakingthelaw7974 frankly I’m not a huge fan of Baba O’riley. The piano is overly-basic and repetitive, and the closing solo on the violin was an odd choice. I get what you’re saying about the song being overplayed (maybe even cliché), but for a song to be a rock anthem it needs to have that quality of being instantly recognizable by the masses. There’s more to than that even. I wouldn’t consider Starway to be anthemic. It’s maybe the most iconic rock song ever written, but its more of a soaring musical journey than a power anthem. I can think of a dozen better and even more popular rock songs than Baba, but that doesn’t necessarily make them anthems IMO.
That's actually a good call. It's too intellectual, though, I think. It's too complex. It's the reason why "Bohemian Rhapsody" isn't on here. Too many moving parts. A banger, to be sure. But The Who are an iconic, anthem-y band. What could go on that list? "Who are You?" No, not aggressive enough. Maybe "Won't Get Fooled Again"? "Magic Bus" is too psychedelic. "Pinball Wizard" is too tied to the movie.
Technically, the singer is talented and has good range, BUT the overall tone and sound of his voice is annoyingly unappealing. I almost stopped watching/listening. It turned me off that badly!
...and he hung in there through these sessions. The guys can play as long as they have energy. The voice has limited ability and endurance by comparison. The fact that he did a good version of Perry and Mercury just lends credibility to Beato"s work.
Okay... not hating or judging but I felt like these songs deserved a better singer. I wasn't going to say anything until I saw these comments. He is good in his own right so dont think im bashing or anything because i know this was just a list and he couldn't exactly pull an A list singer. I know for sure the video could have been better with someone else.
I thought so too. Being able to jump into the middle of a song and pretty much nail it isn't easy. Singing these songs requires putting at least a little emotion into your voice and I was impressed with how he could turn it on and off at will.

Rick, I just want to say I really love this channel. A big THANKYOU from me. I came across your channel by accident scrolling RUclips, like you do and I'm glad I found it. You've introduced me to some artists I've never heard of but should've. Keep up the excellent work and content. Well done mate, peace out.
The song i missed the most on this list is Another Brick in the wall. I feel like everyone one knows that and would sing along as well. Another amazing list!
I totally agree with this; had the same choice. ALSO - Won't Get Fooled Again!! Hell, it's even a political song, which should have made it a no-brainer as a rock "anthem"!
@@jasonpatrickdeleon4701 would be one of mine, champagne supernova also but britpop seems to have passed America by. I've never heard van Halen and 'panama' that I can think of
I'm on song #10, all the while thinking ... what about Queen "we will rock you"? 1982 best live show of my life, and I've been to a lot of shows. 1st show, Jackson 5, Tower of power and Sly and the family stone. Kansas city 1972ish...lol
Drift Away is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life. I love the message of the song, and it's just a feel good song for when you're going through a rough time. Perfect choice for this list!
Rick you probably will never read this but I have been watching your channel for a very long time, what can I say your the bollocks lots of love from Blighty (that’s England) by the way, keep doing what you do brother! A few years ago I had a series of strokes which affected my speech and memory, your channel has helped me regain so many of those previously lost memories, thank you!
It's a great list, but I have some honorable mentions of my own. "All the young dudes-Mott the Hoople, The boys are back in town-Thin Lizzy, We are the champions-Queen, Bring your daughter to the slaughter-Iron Maiden, Rock you like a hurricane-Scorpions". Much love, Rick.
“We Are The Champions", "Hey Jude", "Living After Midnight", "Carry On My Wayward Son", "I still haven't found what i'm looking for", "Crazy Nights", "Rock and Roll Radio", "Smells like teen spirit", "Born to Be my Baby", "Al you need is love"...
Rick, I just found you and am binge watching all of your videos! My favorite so far was the 70s and 80s one hit wonders. I’m 63 now so that music makes me happy! 😎👍 You’re so easy to watch and listen to with your enthusiasm and knowledge. Thank you for sharing your passion!
Definitely more than Sweet Child oh Mine which I'm appalled they even mentioned. I'm so sick of that song being overplayed. And I actually don't like that opening riff. Paradise City is a much better song and I felt it was the best song on the album when it was first released (before they even became famous).
Rick: "When I think of grunge, this is really the only band that come to mind..." Cobain: "Really?" Vedder: "Now, seriously dude?" Cornell: "You're joking right?!"
You know Rick, I'm 67 years old, I started playing guitar when I was 5, began playing percussion at 7, every time I see you play an instrument, you remind me of a 3 lesson student!
Actually, the moment sporting events were mentioned I realised that, even though there aren't really singable chorus lyrics, Seven Nation Army is one hell of an anthem. I'd personally go as far as to put it alongside, or at least a close second to We Will Rock You. The singbility of that melody and the drive Seven Nation Army has is fascinating, at least to me.
Personally, I've heard seven nation army a hell of a lot more in sporting events in comparison to we will rock you, and I think you're right, it's at least on the same level of not better than we will rock you
Exactly, once he started talking about sporting events I was 100% sure it's gonna be Seven Nation Army, We Will Rock You didn't even cross my mind, honestly.
OMGWTFLOL doesn’t matter if you like ‘em bro by definition they’re rock anthems! He put the cheesefest living on a prayer on it. The list is garbage...free fallin, sweet home Alabama 🤣 not even close to rock anthems, not even rock!
Carry On Wayward Son IS the definition of rock anthem. Living on a prayer makes it. Not carry on wayward son. I'd switch them out. Carry On once eclipsed stairway to heaven as the most played classic rock song ever.
Great ones! Just a few I miss: "All right now", "Smoke on the water", "Hey Jude", "Born to be wild", "We're an American band" and "Rock you like a hurricane".
1 Queen - We Will Rock You 2 Metallica - Seek And Destroy 3 Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA 4 Neil Young - Keep On Rockin 5 Lynrd Skynrd - FreeBird 6 Don McLean - American Pie 7 Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild 8 Twisted Sister - Were Not Gonna Take It 9 Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall 10 Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil 11 ACDC - Hells Bells 12 Kiss - I Want To Rock All Night 13 Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane 14 Europe - The Final Countdown 15 Eric Clapton - Layla 16 The Who - My Generation 17 Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right To Party 18 White Lion - When The Children Cry 19 Joan Jett - I Love Rock N Roll 20 White Stripes - 7 Nation Army
Had to be Queen, and they also have another, We Are the Champions. Some others I would mention are: Judas Priest - Take On All the World Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back in Town Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water Status Quo , - Caroline. Great video, and your man there has a great voice 👍👍
I'm normally twitchy about singers - the one doing the songs here is phenomenal. I like how he did the songs his own way but also hit the original tone and intent of the songs. Great job!
*sees Freddie Mercury in the thumbnail* Me: "Oh Bohemian Rhapsody must be #1" Beato: "this song is played at every sporting event ever" Me: "Oh, it's gotta be We are the Champions" Beato: *stomp stomp clap* Queen is the king of rock anthems man
Shocked that the Alice Cooper group's "School's Out" wasn't at least mentioned. A true anthem and is still so well known almost 50 years since its release.
Fantastic covers guys! My additions: Queen - We Are The Champions Simple Minds - Alive And Kicking and Don't You Forget About Me Guns 'n Roses - Welcome To The Jungle (blockers, I know ;) )
@@robgraham5016 Saw them live three times in Amsterdam, one time the song lasted fifteen minutes because of the crowd singing along endlessly. The band loved it! :D
@@r3furbish3dbrain12 So did Brian Ferry. Well: their loss. One of the biggest anthems of the 80s if you ask me and I'm glad Simple Minds did it, whether they were the writers or not; I'm interested in the performing, not the writing. Lots of famous bands performed songs that they didn't write themselves; hell: probably more than half of the biggest hits in history haven't been written by the performers themselves. I can understand their reluctance though, saying they only wanted to play material that they'd written themselves. If that's your thing as a band, it's your thing. Simple as that. It just shows how mistaken even the biggest musicians can get.
We all need to take a moment and acknowledge the awesome talent of Jason's. Wow. Also I really appreciate the fact that they went to the trouble of playing all of these songs themselves.
So glad I found you, great group, what a voice Jason has. I could replace a few with Free, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Slade, everyone forgets Family with Hung Up Down, not forgetting David Bowie with Jean Genie. Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love, OK 1969 but they were the original game changers. Rock on guys, encore!
May I submit for your consideration, "School's Out"? Alice Cooper himself admitted that he wanted to write rock anthems. He wrote several, but this is the one that really hit home.
I love the fact that you acknowledged that "Cum On Feel The Noize" is a cover. A lot of people don't realize that it was originally written and released in the '70s by Slade.
My 11 year old granddaughter asked for and received both drums and an acustic guitar for Christmas, she wants to play music when she grows up, her dad is a drummer, so hes teaching her but I am sharing this video with her to show her that she can do anything she puts her mind to!!
Roberth Pascal - I would too but then I am terribly Pink Floyd biased so they’d probably be in slots 20 to 1. I can see why it’s not in Rick B’s list but I probably would have had it in mine.
@Mark: Although those songs are often played together, We Are the Champions really deserves to at least sit in second place all on its own. Definitely should not be missing from an all time anthem list.
This video is by far and away my, New Number 1 Second to none; Favorite Music Video. Excellent work fellows. Rick, I think you should use more of this concept to enhance your channel. What blew me away, was the use of the upright bass. This was a complete breath of cutting edge fresh air. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely! Freddie is the standard by which all other lead singers are measured. His charisma and command of the audience are still unmatched. His stage presence is still wowing new generations.
Holy crap, that's the first time I've understood Pearl Jam lyrics! :) You know it's really working when the first impulse is to yell at your monitor, "No, don't stop!" A solid 20 Rick.
@@darrelstevens9707 Yes! That was immediately what came to my mind. I loved every minute of Live from Daryl's House so if Rick can come up with a way of doing live cover without running afoul of RUclips and the musicians of the song then that will be awesome. The "what makes this song great" where they do a live cover at the end of the segment.

The singer in this video is an ABSOLUTE BEAST!!! He nails every voice and style!!!! The guitar players......Jezzzzz these guys are sooo great!!!
The singer could comfortably cover for any rock frontman ever and still sound right
Great choices! Couple that I thought of too are “Summer of 69”, “Crazy Train”, and “Baba O’Reilly”

I was thinking a Who song too, but yeah there’s really no hook to sing along to in Baba O’Reilly.
Yeah, I'm surprised he didn't have a Who song on the list.
For The Who, how about "We Won't Get Fooled Again" ???

Whoever he is, that guy is one hell of a singer to do all of those particular songs.
Another amazing list!
it's not because it's one of the best rock song of all time that it's an anthem. The chorus is kind of bleak to fedarate people like an anthem does
I totally agree with this; had the same choice. ALSO - Won't Get Fooled Again!! Hell, it's even a political song, which should have made it a no-brainer as a rock "anthem"!
Totally AGREE!!!
The greatest rock anthem of all time can faithfully be performed with no instruments, but only if you have enough people.
The magic of Queen everyone.
I really wish he could do more of their songs cause they’re tied with Nirvana for my favorite band

I'm on song #10, all the while thinking ... what about Queen "we will rock you"? 1982 best live show of my life, and I've been to a lot of shows. 1st show, Jackson 5, Tower of power and Sly and the family stone. Kansas city 1972ish...lol
I think first place would be a split between “We Will Rock You” AND “We Are The Champions”
Totally agree. UMG being their usual dick selves claiming on this.
I was thinking the same thing while watching this.
People say it is subjective...they are wrong. You are correct.
Great list of songs, and good job on the performance.
i 100% disagree. i can recognize that the songs are well written, but freddie mercury ruins queen
Patrick McPheeters Runs Queen ... fixed that for you. :)
Drift Away is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life. I love the message of the song, and it's just a feel good song for when you're going through a rough time. Perfect choice for this list!

Much love, Rick.
The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak are two of the greatest anthems. Every time they come on in the radio I can't help but sing along.

Mott the Hoople. I like it good call. Rick could do a top thirty.
Hey Jude and We Are The Champions should be Top 2
"Hey Jude" is the one I thought was the inexcusable absence. Everybody sings along with that because you don't need to know any words.
That looks a lot more like my list than Ricks does
Al You Need is Love?
Hey Jude, We Are the Champions, I agree. Is Good Vibrations a Rock Anthem or something else?
Rick, I just found you and am binge watching all of your videos! My favorite so far was the 70s and 80s one hit wonders. I’m 63 now so that music makes me happy! 😎👍 You’re so easy to watch and listen to with your enthusiasm and knowledge. Thank you for sharing your passion!
I get that Gn'R aren't friendly to this stuff, but Paradise City is the definition of "rock anthem". It absolutely deserves mentioning at least.
Definitely more than Sweet Child oh Mine which I'm appalled they even mentioned. I'm so sick of that song being overplayed. And I actually don't like that opening riff. Paradise City is a much better song and I felt it was the best song on the album when it was first released (before they even became famous).
Ditto.
I say we just bury GnR in the back yard and never mention them again.
Yes...absolutely
Without a doubt, it is the definition of a rock anthem.

Personally, I've heard seven nation army a hell of a lot more in sporting events in comparison to we will rock you, and I think you're right, it's at least on the same level of not better than we will rock you
Also we are the champions but i guess only 1 song per band.
Came on to comment this very same thing... Seven Nation Army should have been top 10, if not top 5 or #1.
Exactly, once he started talking about sporting events I was 100% sure it's gonna be Seven Nation Army, We Will Rock You didn't even cross my mind, honestly.
I thought it was gonna be We are the champions... but then I watch a lot of f1

If he would have picked either of those 2 cheesefests, I would have unsubscribed.

“More than a feeling“ should also be in the list imho.
I was surprised that is wasn't included, given Rick's love for Boston. Too hard to sing for it to be included, perhaps?
We will rock you #1 and We are the Champions??????
or longtime, maybe both lol - they are both in my top ten driving around burning one songs
Was thinking the same thing - should really have been in the Top 5.
More than a Feeling should be on EVERY list.

Carry On Wayward Son IS the definition of rock anthem. Living on a prayer makes it. Not carry on wayward son. I'd switch them out.
Carry On once eclipsed stairway to heaven as the most played classic rock song ever.

Great minds think alike with Simple Minds. I also put Ghostdancing on my list from them.

We all need to take a moment and acknowledge the awesome talent of Jason's. Wow. Also I really appreciate the fact that they went to the trouble of playing all of these songs themselves.
So glad I found you, great group, what a voice Jason has. May I submit for your consideration, "School's Out"? Alice Cooper himself admitted that he wanted to write rock anthems. He wrote several, but this is the one that really hit home.
