Baba O’riley was the first song I thought of. To me, it defines what a rock anthem is. Simple, bombastic, and youthful. Maybe it’s the big dramatic crashing cymbals, the piano pounding out the opening chords, or the way the intro builds into the iconic verses. It’s hard to put it in words, but it’s just got that undeniable anthemic quality to it.
@@breakingthelaw7974 frankly I’m not a huge fan of Baba O’riley. The piano is overly-basic and repetitive, and the closing solo on the violin was an odd choice. I get what you’re saying about the song being overplayed (maybe even cliché), but for a song to be a rock anthem it needs to have that quality of being instantly recognizable by the masses. There’s more to than that even. I wouldn’t consider Starway to be anthemic. It’s maybe the most iconic rock song ever written, but its more of a soaring musical journey than a power anthem. I can think of a dozen better and even more popular rock songs than Baba, but that doesn’t necessarily make them anthems IMO.
21: No one like you (Scorpions) 22: eye of the tiger 23: hold the line 24: juke box hero 25: smoke on the water 26: take on the world (Judas Priest) 27: run to the hills 28: should i stay or should i go 29: broken heart (White Lion) 30: All right now
You were definitely reading my mind. Of all the AC/DC songs to make it in the list without the word ROCK in the title. No Zeppelin included, would definitely include ROCK AND ROLL in that list.
...and he hung in there through these sessions. The guys can play as long as they have energy. The voice has limited ability and endurance by comparison. The fact that he did a good version of Perry and Mercury just lends credibility to Beato"s work.
Okay... not hating or judging but I felt like these songs deserved a better singer. I wasn't going to say anything until I saw these comments. He is good in his own right so dont think im bashing or anything because i know this was just a list and he couldn't exactly pull an A list singer. I know for sure the video could have been better with someone else.
I thought so too. Being able to jump into the middle of a song and pretty much nail it isn't easy. Singing these songs requires putting at least a little emotion into your voice and I was impressed with how he could turn it on and off at will.
One of the most enjoyable of all Rick's "Top 20" themes - really cheered me up and made my evening. Great to see Rick and friends enjoying themselves together. 10/10
Considering that Layne Staley didn't want to sing when they put the band together I consider the fact that the band pushed him to sing was the absolute best "putting a band together" decision of all time.
@@jasonpatrickdeleon4701 would be one of mine, champagne supernova also but britpop seems to have passed America by. I've never heard van Halen and 'panama' that I can think of
I'm on song #10, all the while thinking ... what about Queen "we will rock you"? 1982 best live show of my life, and I've been to a lot of shows. 1st show, Jackson 5, Tower of power and Sly and the family stone. Kansas city 1972ish...lol
I obviously don't know what web browser you use, but just to say, it astounds me that I still to this day see comments like this on youtube pages lamenting the ads, when I've never had to deal with that. Mozilla Firefox has the "AdBlockPlus" free plugin, I've had this for what must be at least a decade now, I've literally never had to experience an ad. And I know it's relatively popular, but I'm surprised it's not even way more well known than it is. Though even with other browsers, I'd be shocked if they didn't at least have something similar in their arsenal, a way to combat them. I've then even been bummed with some videos I've put up on my own channel and others complain about an ad (or more) in them, but that I had nothing to do with that as the uploader whatsoever. Granted, when it comes to other certain particular websites, more have in the last few years gotten to where the site won't let you view more than the very top of it if you have an ad blocker, but if it's something I want to see bad enough I just do the "white list" thing on an individual basis (I've got probably less than 10 sites I've done that with), but RUclips's never done that. I've never not been able to see something leaving the plug-in activated.

Not only does ACDC "You Shook Me All Night Long" have a supremely singable chorus, it also has one oc the greatest lines in rock......"she told me to come but I was already there"..........pure rock and roll.
I know, when he started to talk about the no.1 i thought straight away of that song especially when he said about it being played at sporting events but nope he picked the wrong one.

Definitely more than Sweet Child oh Mine which I'm appalled they even mentioned. I'm so sick of that song being overplayed. And I actually don't like that opening riff. Paradise City is a much better song and I felt it was the best song on the album when it was first released (before they even became famous).
@user-mx5ey4xj9r quite literally one of the most popular bands of their time, still are widely known and for a reason. But obviously we'll take user-mx5ey4xj9r's opinion on it
Nope. Bon Jovi is not overrated. You obviously haven't heard all their songs and deep cuts. Truly talented. After seeing the docu-series, he worked his ass off to where he and the band is.

Hotel California probably belongs there too. It's not heavy rock, but then neither is Free Fallin'. And everybody, and I mean everybody, sings the entire song, not just the chorus.
Had to be Queen, and they also have another, We Are the Champions. Some others I would mention are: Judas Priest - Take On All the World Thin Lizzy - Boys Are Back in Town Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water Status Quo , - Caroline. Great video, and your man there has a great voice 👍👍
Tom Cass I respect you and Ricks choice in music But is it is of my opinion that grunge hip-hop and rap have destroyed music and has lowered the bar for musicianship which would include people that can actually sing. Case in point, I have friends in mind that I love dearly, however, when I was in bands with them back in the day we wouldn’t even let them sing back up let alone leads. Now they are the lead singers in their own band the bar has sadly been lowered and trust me their vocal abilities have not improved one bit
Tom Cass Musicianship as a whole is horrible I completely disagree with you, however no Neil Young is a horrible singer, however I don’t think anybody has ever stated that he’s a great singer and you do make a very strong point about bar bands yes it is very hard to find a good singer. I have been a lead singer and guitarist for 40 years and I have toured with some very well-known artists in my career I’m not saying that I’m in authority but I still stand by my statement that musicianship is dead. I’ve played with younger players and they lack a lot of vital tools thanks to RUclips, tableture and digital technology. Nowadays you can sit in your room all by yourself with ProTools etc. never play with a band in your life and put together some type of a demo album playing with a band and other musicians as an art form it is a skill unto itself. People make fun of hairbands all the time but some of the best melodic shred masters came out of that era

@@angelinadigrazzia5401 lol....did you see his face when he was done? He can certainly sing a lot of stuff...but I think that was a bit out of his comfort range...I doubt he would want to do an entire Journey set. If he did, he'd need about a week to recover his voice.
@@darrelstevens9707 Yes! That was immediately what came to my mind. I loved every minute of Live from Daryl's House so if Rick can come up with a way of doing live cover without running afoul of RUclips and the musicians of the song then that will be awesome. The "what makes this song great" where they do a live cover at the end of the segment.
Surprised you didn't stick "Hey Jude" in here. Hat's off to the singer, he certainly had his work cut out, especially when you made him sing Steve Perry lines.
I’m a VIP Charter pilot and have flown many celebrities including Joan Jett. She stands out as a cool rocker but also a down to Earth person who, when introduced, took her sunglasses off and looked me in the eye as she shook my hand. That is unheard of in my profession, as we are usually treated as “the help.” It was a refreshing experience and something that most people don”t see.
We will Rock you was is from 1977 ,,,,, What can i say ,,, The 70s were ROCKN ,, Tons of great bands and songs came out in my youth years But now im a Christian and my likes have changed , ,Jesus Christ ROCKS now ,,,
Fantastic covers guys! My additions: Queen - We Are The Champions Simple Minds - Alive And Kicking and Don't You Forget About Me Guns 'n Roses - Welcome To The Jungle (blockers, I know ;) )
@@robgraham5016 Saw them live three times in Amsterdam, one time the song lasted fifteen minutes because of the crowd singing along endlessly. The band loved it! :D
@@r3furbish3dbrain12 So did Brian Ferry. Well: their loss. One of the biggest anthems of the 80s if you ask me and I'm glad Simple Minds did it, whether they were the writers or not; I'm interested in the performing, not the writing. Lots of famous bands performed songs that they didn't write themselves; hell: probably more than half of the biggest hits in history haven't been written by the performers themselves. I can understand their reluctance though, saying they only wanted to play material that they'd written themselves. If that's your thing as a band, it's your thing. Simple as that. It just shows how mistaken even the biggest musicians can get.
Actually, the moment sporting events were mentioned I realised that, even though there aren't really singable chorus lyrics, Seven Nation Army is one hell of an anthem. I'd personally go as far as to put it alongside, or at least a close second to We Will Rock You. The singbility of that melody and the drive Seven Nation Army has is fascinating, at least to me.
Personally, I've heard seven nation army a hell of a lot more in sporting events in comparison to we will rock you, and I think you're right, it's at least on the same level of not better than we will rock you
Exactly, once he started talking about sporting events I was 100% sure it's gonna be Seven Nation Army, We Will Rock You didn't even cross my mind, honestly.
So glad I found you, great group, what a voice Jason has. I could replace a few with Free, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Slade, everyone forgets Family with Hung Up Down, not forgetting David Bowie with Jean Genie. Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love, OK 1969 but they were the original game changers. Rock on guys, encore!
The song i missed the most on this list is Another Brick in the wall. I feel like everyone one knows that and would sing along as well. Another amazing list!
I totally agree with this; had the same choice. ALSO - Won't Get Fooled Again!! Hell, it's even a political song, which should have made it a no-brainer as a rock "anthem"!
Here's what was missing, Seven Nation Army - The hook is the chorus. Also Eye of the Tiger, Sweet Caroline, and I mean I know it's hip hop too but Fight for your Right.
I wouldn't consider Fight for your Right as hiphop, Beastie Boys were initially a punk band. They started to took rap/hiphop influences later. That said, it's not a rock anthem at all, regardless of how much I love that song :)
Drift Away is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in my life. I love the message of the song, and it's just a feel good song for when you're going through a rough time. Perfect choice for this list!
It's a great list, but I have some honorable mentions of my own. "All the young dudes-Mott the Hoople, The boys are back in town-Thin Lizzy, We are the champions-Queen, Bring your daughter to the slaughter-Iron Maiden, Rock you like a hurricane-Scorpions". Much love, Rick.
Shocked that the Alice Cooper group's "School's Out" wasn't at least mentioned. A true anthem and is still so well known almost 50 years since its release.
Roberth Pascal - I would too but then I am terribly Pink Floyd biased so they’d probably be in slots 20 to 1. I can see why it’s not in Rick B’s list but I probably would have had it in mine.
First, just wanted y'all to know that y'alls “Drift Away” was killer. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Thanks. Second, funny story. The local kid checked out the book _Dino-Basketball_ from the library this week. In it, during the halftime show, the carnivorous dinosaurs sing ”We will, we will, chomp you!” I took the opportunity to teach her the cadence and stomp-stomp-clap. So when we were watching together, and it got to No. 1, I knew what it would be and started stomp-stomp-clapping. The grin on her face when y'all were doing it too really made my day, so thanks for that too. Finally, I gotta say, I think Boston got robbed on this one. How is The Ultimate Song - “More Than a Feeling” - not one of the Top 20 Rock Anthems?
Not sure it's the first. I was thinking about Won't Get Fooled Again, and then saw someone mention My Generation, which really could be considered on of the first true rock anthems.
Rick, I just found you and am binge watching all of your videos! My favorite so far was the 70s and 80s one hit wonders. I’m 63 now so that music makes me happy! 😎👍 You’re so easy to watch and listen to with your enthusiasm and knowledge. Thank you for sharing your passion!
Gomer Caasi I felt the same first, but indeed, Alive moved me more than Teen Spirit. Both are great songs which had a deep impact. They just went for the uplifting stuff.
Carry On Wayward Son IS the definition of rock anthem. Living on a prayer makes it. Not carry on wayward son. I'd switch them out. Carry On once eclipsed stairway to heaven as the most played classic rock song ever.
Seeing all your heads bobbing on "Enter Sandman" says it all--and left an indelible impression! LOL. Fun, entertaining and so great to see the love of music so alive on this channel!
the Nirvana anthem song is "In Bloom". Others that deserve mention are "Rockin' in the Free World", "Baba O'Riley (Teenage Wasteland)". "Sweet Child of Mine" for sure. But there is no denying that "We Will Rock You" is the quintessential rock anthem.
I feel there’s a few missing that I’d have on here Poison - Every Rose Has It’s Thorn Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild Ozzy Ozbourne - Crazy Train Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Every Rose has its thorn is an amazing song but it’s a power ballad, for poison I’d say unskinny bop is their best one followed closely by nothin but a good time
I'm surprised Rock You Like a Hurricane wasn't on here. It has all the makings of a perfect rock anthem. Although it might be a bit tough to sing, Klaus Meine has a pretty unique voice that's kind of hard to imitate.
The Zoo was a staple at EVERY hard rock/metal concert I attended during the 80s and 90s. RYLAH might have been more popular, but not anthem worthy. Only four or five songs on this list belong-WWRY (w or w/o WATC) is indisputably #1. No Springsteen because they’d get censored? Joan Jett and U2? Lmmfao! Sweet Caroline and maybe even The Chicken Dance would rank way ahead of them. Yawn! I was able to nap between several of these songs.
*sees Freddie Mercury in the thumbnail* Me: "Oh Bohemian Rhapsody must be #1" Beato: "this song is played at every sporting event ever" Me: "Oh, it's gotta be We are the Champions" Beato: *stomp stomp clap* Queen is the king of rock anthems man
May I submit for your consideration, "School's Out"? Alice Cooper himself admitted that he wanted to write rock anthems. He wrote several, but this is the one that really hit home.
@HUUUUUURRRR a huge white stripes fan here. While I kinda get offended when people, who I assume are not very familiar with other white stripes songs, say seven nation army is not a good song, I've got to say that song is not my favourite 🤣 though I definitely agree it's one of the most known/sung rock anthems
Holy crap, that's the first time I've understood Pearl Jam lyrics! :) You know it's really working when the first impulse is to yell at your monitor, "No, don't stop!" A solid 20 Rick.

No dout. I´ve the same opinion. It´s like 2 in ONE Long live to "The Queen"
id put 1 as seven nation army, surprised I haven't seen anyone mention it yet
Also Bohemian Rhapsody, the video of fans singing it at Green Day concert gave me goosebumps.

Okay... not hating or judging but I felt like these songs deserved a better singer.
Auto tuned wedding singer nothing more. Would have rather heard nails down a chalk board
Maybe I'm too old for this crowd, but "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf and "School's Out" by Alice Cooper would've been in my top 20.

That guy can sing his ass off. That rendition of 'man in the box' was killer.
Considering that Layne Staley didn't want to sing when they put the band together I consider the fact that the band pushed him to sing was the absolute best "putting a band together" decision of all time.

I guess that's the reason why Google trashed that "Don't be evil" passus.
Actually he’s the in charge of where it’s placed he’s just not in charge of what goes there
I obviously don't know what web browser you use, but just to say, it astounds me that I still to this day see comments like this on youtube pages lamenting the ads, when I've never had to deal with that.

Al You Need is Love?
Hey Jude, We Are the Champions, I agree. Is Good Vibrations a Rock Anthem or something else?
Not only does ACDC "You Shook Me All Night Long" have a supremely singable chorus, it also has one oc the greatest lines in rock......"she told me to come but I was already there"..........pure rock and roll.
We are the Champions is THE DEFINITION of an anthem. How could it possibly not be there?

I love Rick but h3 always has to throw in that bullshit Grunge CRAP.

Great minds think alike with Simple Minds. I also put Ghostdancing on my list from them.

First, just wanted y'all to know that y'alls “Drift Away” was killer. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Thanks.
Second, funny story. The local kid checked out the book _Dino-Basketball_ from the library this week. theantonlulz I thought he’d do the pair like they’re usually done on the radio.
You failed to include the first real rock anthem song, "Schools Out" by Alice Cooper.
Got that right Vic!
Rick never has EVER had an Alice Cooper song in ANY of his top 20 lists.
This is VERY strange.
Not sure it's the first. I was thinking about Won't Get Fooled Again, and then saw someone mention My Generation, which really could be considered on of the first true rock anthems.
That whole album is STILL amazing.
Man in the Box gave me chills. Y'all nailed it.
Joe Misek agreed this song is epic!!
Yeah that rendition was cool af
#16
1991, new era
“Oh it’s Smells like Teen Spir-“
Alive
“Oh”
i'm really shocked man.. alive > smells like teen spirit is somewhat weird.. or is it just us?
Gomer Caasi I felt the same first, but indeed, Alive moved me more than Teen Spirit. Both are great songs which had a deep impact. They just went for the uplifting stuff.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who was expecting this song.
AxelRad Smells like teen Spirit came out in 1994
@@cameronshaw8478 What are you taking about it came out in 1991
Rick: I'm making a top 20 rock anthems
Queen: Hold my Greatest Hits albums
:D :D :D Ha! Good one.
I was 100% sure that #1 was going to be We Are The Champions
@@eskilseter "We Are The Champions" might be a Ballad and not an Anthem.
Well played, Sir :)
Not really an anthem
Rick. You need to do “Name that tune” with your band mates. So awesome watching this. That all I can think of watching this.
What a trip down memory lane. I'm a 66-year-old female. I'm smiling ear to ear. Thank you, Rick.
Me too❤
Carry On Wayward Son IS the definition of rock anthem. Living on a prayer makes it. Not carry on wayward son. I'd switch them out.
Carry On once eclipsed stairway to heaven as the most played classic rock song ever.
I’m also 66. Aren’t we lucky we had such fun tunes?
Seeing all your heads bobbing on "Enter Sandman" says it all--and left an indelible impression! LOL. Fun, entertaining and so great to see the love of music so alive on this channel!
the Nirvana anthem song is "In Bloom". Others that deserve mention are "Rockin' in the Free World", "Baba O'Riley (Teenage Wasteland)". "Sweet Child of Mine" for sure. But there is no denying that "We Will Rock You" is the quintessential rock anthem.
OH! Right on! Neil's Rockin' in the Free World definitely belongs in the list!
Where do we go now?
Where do we go...
I would say Lithium is THE Nirvana anthem.
Pedro Ordonez lithium is great but if we’re talking anthem songs I’d say teen spirit, it was definitely their song with biggest impact let’s be honest
@@moizmalik1524 Totally agree. But it is not great as an anthem because it is hard to sing along
Jason absolutely NAILED all these! Great video! I've watched it half a dozen times.
I feel there’s a few missing that I’d have on here
Poison - Every Rose Has It’s Thorn
Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild
Ozzy Ozbourne - Crazy Train
Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane
Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Its
Born to Be Wild is number 1 for me! BY FAR
Ozzy Yeah!
Every Rose has its thorn is an amazing song but it’s a power ballad, for poison I’d say unskinny bop is their best one followed closely by nothin but a good time
@@Luciano_Leyva Nothing but a good time is definitely a great anthem. Unskinny bop was always my fave of theirs though, great riff.
I'm surprised Rock You Like a Hurricane wasn't on here. It has all the makings of a perfect rock anthem. Although it might be a bit tough to sing, Klaus Meine has a pretty unique voice that's kind of hard to imitate.
I missed it too!!!
He goes pretty damn high in the chorus too, but I definitely think it could’ve been here
I don't think he could sing anything Scorpions. He's got ht epitch, but not the iconic "voice" they seem to think he has.
@@lepurpleboi3266 one of those songs where the verse has a higher pitch than the chorus.
Here’s to Rick actually getting to keep the Ad revenue. 🤟
If rock music was still a genre that sold millions, Jason Tillery would be super rich! Cause he has an awesome rock voice.
I grew up during this era and if someone said to me "Quick, rock anthem?" my first words would be "All Right Now" by Free
That's a great suggestion, but the anthemic part of that is really the riff, not the chorus.
Yep
Jason has a fantastic voice. He did a great job on all of these songs. He doesn't sound like anyone but himself, and that's a good thing!
*sees Freddie Mercury in the thumbnail*
Me: "Oh Bohemian Rhapsody must be #1"
Beato: "this song is played at every sporting event ever"
Me: "Oh, it's gotta be We are the Champions"
Beato: *stomp stomp clap*
Queen is the king of rock anthems man
Facts
Queen is everywhere 🙌🏽❤️
I thought for sure “We Are The Champions”
@@wademartin4209 same
Never any doubt it was "We Will Rock You"
I am very curious as to why Twisted Sister's "We're not going to take it" did not fit the criteria for 'Rock Anthems'
May I submit for your consideration, "School's Out"? Alice Cooper himself admitted that he wanted to write rock anthems. He wrote several, but this is the one that really hit home.
This is like four dads getting the band back together, I hope I'll be able to do this some time.
That’s it! “The Four Dads!”
seven nation army. not the lyrics just singing the riff is one of the best anthems of all time
Its crazy how many people can sing along without even knowing the song
Duuuu du du du duduuuu duuuu
@HUUUUUURRRR Go to trending music on RUclips and say that again.
I was thinking this! 😂👌
Holy crap, that's the first time I've understood Pearl Jam lyrics! :) You know it's really working when the first impulse is to yell at your monitor, "No, don't stop!" A solid 20 Rick.
