Watching as UK music fan I’m always surprised that bands like Travis and Franz Ferdinand are considered one hit wonders in the US as they’re really successful and well respected still to this day in the UK with good albums and big crowds
It's because they aren't . Half of these were not one-hit-wonders.
The music market is simply too over saturated in the US. A British or European singer, band or group not only needs to be *really* talented to make any firm and lasting impression in the States but marketing and touring also play a huge role. Take British singer Robbie Williams for example. I know he had a lot of hits in the UK and Europe and was incredibly popular in the late 90s and early 00s. However in the US and Canada he wasn't too well known for the simple fact that Williams didn't take the time to tour or market himself to North American audiences. Williams has stated that this was a very conscious decision on his behalf as he was content to be a hit in his own home country (UK) and in Europe and chose to focus his time and energy promoting himself there. The same can also be said for Kylie Minogue who was also a huge hit in the UK, Europe and Australia but only had two hit songs in North America, one in 1987 (Locomotion) and one in 2001 (Can't Get You Out of My Head). There are a ton of other British and European artists, bands and groups with similar experiences. It doesn't mean that these artists and bands aren't great in their own right, it's just incredibly hard to break into and then stay relevant in the American music scene when the competition from homegrown American talent is so fierce.
To this day it kills me how criminally underheard and underappreciated Travis are in the US.
@@toocarcrazy - That depends entirely on where you live.
yeah I'm not from the uk but I can swear travis were massive and had a good handful of fairly big hits (edit: la roux as well they had some hits didn't they)
Franz Ferdinand's whole first album is killer.
Dark of the matinee is an absolute beauty, such good rhythm to it
Awesome album
the second album is even better
Absolutely! "This Fire" is prob my favorite track aside from "Take Me Out".
surprised there are fewer pitchforks out - wouldn't call FF a one hit wonder band - for people 5 years younger than me it was seminal
The singer from Nine Days (story of a girl) is an english teacher now who performs this song on the last day of school each year
Damn that rules
Their second single was really good too. Shame it didn't take off, as well.
Bowling For Soup was nominated for a Grammy for their song “Girl all the Bad Guys Want.” Their track “Almost” also got quite a lot of radio play. They also did the theme song for HUGE cartoon Phineas and Ferb. I wouldn’t really call them a one hit wonder.
And High School Never Ends.
The other songs weren't really at the top of the charts like 1985.
I feel like bowling for soup had a couple of hits in 2000s. "Girl all the bad guys want" always comes to mind when remembering that band.
There were several bands here that had multiple hits. Hinder, Bowling for Soup, Jet, Finger Eleven. Some were definitely there best hit on here. But I thought One Hit Wonder was only 1 hit.
Punk Rock 101.
1985 wasn't even their song, it was borrowed from SR-71.
Also High School Never Ends, so let’s call them a 3 Hit Wonder haha
they def did, same with Fountains of Wayne
Franz Ferdinand is my one objection here: that whole album is great and they had tons of singles.
All discography is amazing
Yeah, that stood out to me as being kind of an odd choice.
The while Jet album is really good too
Probably a "geographic" thing in the native countries.......Franz Ferdinand was much bigger in the UK, and likewise, Jet in Australia.
I remember Jet having a second hit in the USA, though.
@@TheBillyKmusic Was gunna say the same thing Very different downunder Jet and Franz pretty big and Travis - Why Does It Always Rain On Me? was big also
Travis had a song they released called "Why does it always rain on me" that was just splendid!!
really love Rick's low to no shade takes and general enthusiasm for all the songs. great positive energy
Its refreshing so many youtubers are so negative about most of these bands just because they were popular but rick just appreciates the hits for what they are i love it.
@@JosephWalker-ip7pd His knowledge and appreciation are freakin' fantastic.
The Calling - Wherever You Will Go. Should 100% of been on the list. What a song and the only one I know/heard of from them
Yes, they would've been a better fit for this list than Jet, Vanessa Carlton, Hoobastank, or Franz Ferdinand.
Absolutely agree. Great song 👍🏼
I think this list is not just about popularity. I think it's Rick's Top 20 of a pool of one hit wonders. Not sure what criteria Rick uses but I'm assuming there is something he doesn't like about Wherever You Will Go that's why it didn't made the top 20.
I can't believe I forgot that song I loved it maybe it was too early in the decade but that how did that miss the list
@@austintrousdale2397 I think A Thousand Miles and The Reason are way more popular.
What a walk down memory lane for us 25-35 year olds!
So so many memories for me too and I’m only 17. Still grew up listening to a lot of this music.
Wellllll I'm 58 and I loved it, too! Glad to see that you younger folks are digging Rick's channel! My favorites were Travis, Franz F, FOW and the Plain White T's!
I'd feel a lot less targeted by this comment if you weren't using my name on it
I'm 45, and I heavily appreciate 00s music. Never liked most of the 90s (mid teens to early 20s), and the 80s were great overall, so the 00s reignited my love for music after a near decade-long drought.
I'm 23 and it's still nostalgic for me.
Finger Eleven’s track ‘One Thing’ is such an incredible song too!
I'd add Hanging By a Moment by Lifehouse. According to Billboard it was the most successful single of 2001 despite never being the number 1 song on the Hot list
Why would you consider Lifehouse a 1 hit wonder? Go listen to You and Me. That song was very popular
Lifehouse isn't a 1 hit wonder lol. 15 Million records sold. Plenty of songs in top 40.
Interesting: Over here in Europe the biggest hit from Travis was actually "Why does it always rain on me"
And if you like Franz Ferdinand check out "The Dark Of The Matinée"
That song has been on my play list since I first heard it on Cold Case.
Franz Ferdinand had tons of great songs.
Actually i guess it dépends which European country. In France it was "Sing"
Biggest hit of Travis is Britney Spears cover
@@askesismusic In Italy too
How on Earth could you skip "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" by The Darkness? I know they had a ton of hits in the UK, but that was the only one in America. And it's AMAZING.
And Justins Hawkins youtube channel is excellent.
Beato and Hawkins are doing something together soon
Probably because he doesn't consider them to be one hit wonders?
It sucks when that happens. Like with Take That. They've had about 15 number one singles in the UK and played a record eight nights at Wembley Stadium, but Americans only ever heard 'Back For Good'.
The Darkness are a great band, not really worthy of "one hit wonder" status but in a way they were. Their debut album is one of the best rock albums I've ever heard! Glad they're still going
To be fair, Alien Ant Farm had about 3-4 big songs but without a doubt “Smooth Criminal” being #1.
"The Reason" by Hoobastank is how I taught my drummer to sing harmony.
"Wherever You Will Go" by The Calling should be on this list. Fantastic song
love that one
I agree it is a great song and there is even rumors that it was meant to be the theme to Enterprise/Star Star Enterprise before Faith of The Heart was chosen. While not as big as "Wherever You Will Go" I think The Callings song "Our Lives" keeps them from being a one hit wonder.
@@DynamixWarePro As I recall it was used in the commercials leading up to the release of Enterprise.
Adrienne.
I was convinced this would be number 1!
Gotta have Wherever You Will Go by The Calling!!!!! One of the quintessential rock songs of the decade that perfectly fits the stereotype of early 2000’s rock. It fits perfectly into the one-hit wonder category.
I was waiting for that also in the top 5
So much respect for daring to put ATC in that list !!!
Yeah...but he forgot Darude - Sandstorm
What's fascinating is that a lot of these "one hit wonders" have a strong following! They're not mainstream, but they definitely are not unsuccessful.
Even Vanessa Carlton had some good tracks, "White Houses" comes to mind.
Not to mention, a few of Hoobstank's songs from "The Reason" are personal favorites of mine. "Escape" really speaks to me even in my 30s.
Franz Ferdinand considered as a One Hit wonder ? No way ! The whole first album is a killer and the following ones had theirs hits as well. These Guys have now a Best of :)
They only have had one mega hit. I really like them as well.
@@Crx2581 But a Nr. 3 and a Nr. 4 Song in the UK and a Nr. 1 Album there
Two top 100 songs doesnt sound very OHO to me
For us here in the UK they most certainly weren't, but I guess from a US perspective that was perhaps as much as they penetrated that market.
Jacqueline was 17... Working on a desk when
Also, Auf achse is such an underrated song, that and darkness of the matinee are two of my favorite songs ever
Growing up in the 90's and 00's, it's cool to catch some nostalgia from those days! 👍
It's great until you realise you're over 40 😭
amen, man! good times. nowadays besides singing and jamming to them on my shuffle or the radio, ive been doing some of those songs on karaoke nights, and of course the crowd goes wild!
@@bazahazaWhy's that?
@@bananapeehole782 Because it makes me remember how old I am. 👴
@@bazahaza Old doesn't start until 70, raise your standards champ.
Fascinating how much different music reach other countries. Here in Brazil, Hinder, Bowling for Soup, La Roux, Wheatus, Finger Eleven, Trapt's, songs never reached while Travis´ Side was much bigger than Sing.
Franz Ferdinand is huge over seas. I’m in the states and they came here once and it was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.
They’ve even collaborated with Sparks!
I’ve listened to them ever since Take Me Out was released here.
There was an interview with Vanessa Carlton where they ask her about being a 1 hit wonder. And she responded something like "most people produce 0 billboard #1 hits, so 1 seems pretty good"
Great attitude.
Totally. I'd be stoked with 1!
Except she wasn’t a one hit wonder. She had successful singles off the same album and had a solid single off her second album with White Houses. I have her first 3 albums. It’s just that her first single was one of the most popular songs of all time
Ordinary Day by her is also a kick ass song
Love The Reason
Travis' "Why does it always rain on me?" was a big song too.
Yeah they had like 4 top ten hits they're not a one hit wonder and they sold millions of records
"Side" was a great song of theirs.
Absolutely. Great song.
But „Why does it always rain on me“ was released in ’99.
@@MaximilianMengwasser "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" had widespread airplay in the US throughout 2000 ('The Man Who' US release date was in April 2000). Regardless of its release date, I feel like that song was more well-known than "Sing" at the time.
@@trevour Came here to say this. If you had asked me to name one Travis song, it would definitely be "Why Does it Always Rain on Me?" without hesitation.
I feel like the Plain White T’s and Bowling for Soup were everywhere and constantly had charting songs and music videos back in the day.
Omg me and my husband used to play "Hey There Delilah" on repeat when we were taking long drives somewhere. We love that song so much. This was an amazing trip down memory lane.
Being born in 93, the 2000s were my first really big decade of music, so there is a lot of nostalgia here. Thank you for this video, Rick.
You’re almost 30 mfer
same year! ‘93 baby’s!!
Same.
Born in 86 and the late 90s music is my nostalgia trip (thank god, as the music was much better then). I shudder to think of what the kids born in the 2010’s will have to look back on. lol
@@hobojungle1 born the same year and i agree late 90's is the most nostalgic for me. Exciting times
That Vanessa Carlton track could get its own WMTSG video-it’s that good. It was a huge hit. A piano-driven tune with huge strings, a sick drum groove, and Carlton’s believable emotive delivery make it a standout on your list for me. Great video.
Vice News actually did an interview with Vanessa Carlton about the making of A Thousand Miles. It’s right here on RUclips
WMTSG - Terry Crews 😂
Great album, Leeland Sklar is the bass player along with the drums of Abe Laboriel Jr.
I don't feel like she really belongs on this list; "Ordinary Day" was definitely a hit too...
Love that song. I was always waiting for a follow up to that. Very tough to match.
Running Away, Out of Control and Crawling in the Dark were all hits by Hoobastank. Definitely not a OHW
The darkness “I believe in a thing called love” could have been on this list for sure! Brings me right back to my formative years, such a great variation of songs and styles back then. You could have newmetal on the radio and then hip hop the next on the pop radio station, so good! Also, Jet had to be one of my favorite rock bands of that era, that dudes vocals were so good!!!
Hoobastank was all over the radio with "Crawling in the Dark" before "Reason". And AAF also had "Movies", an infectious head bobber!
I enjoy Hoobastank, and I don't care what anyone says. They have some songs that have some funky little rhythms that made them different than most of the other bands of that time. "Running Away" was a good one too.
AAF is one of the most underrated bands from that era. I still listen to “Anthology” , “TruAnt”, and a few other albums. Incredible vocals/lyrics and musicianship.
Was typing this very statement
As I was typing the same about AAF…
AAF also had These Days with that great video of crashing the BET awards
That Peter Bjorn and John hit is one of my all time favorite one hit wonders!!!
They've had a steady career to the present. There were other great songs off that album like Amesterdame, ancient curse, let's call the whole thing off. I find that onerepublic song I ain't worries for the Top Gun: Maverick sounds a lot like young folks.
Yeah I have the album with Young Folks. Haven’t checked out any of their other ones yet.
I used to make wedding videos, if the couple were real cool I'd honour them with that track
@@eyeballbilly
The cool couples test, 😂😂
The melody for "and we don't care about the young folks" always reminded me of "wouldn't be seen dead in no slit skirt" by Pete Townshend (not a bad thing, and not a steal either)
Understand Bulletproof is a one hit wonder but La Roux's second and third records are UNBELIEVABLE!!!
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army, played everywhere!
I would’ve had ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ higher on the list. It really became a massive part of pop culture. Other noteworthy mentions…’Butterfly’ by Crazy Town, ‘I Try’ by Macy Gray, ‘Here in your arms’ by Hellogoodbye, ‘Handlebars’ by Flobots, ‘My Delirium’ by Ladyhawke & ‘Fireflies’ by Owl City.
Owl City had another big hit with Good Time.
Legitimately shocked Handlebars didn’t make it
I'd also put Idlewild's You Held the World in Your Arms in here
Butterfly was a banger
Owl city are not a one hit wonder
Really love Ricks positivity in all his vids. You can always see how excited and immersed he is in the music, it’s contagious in a great way.
Great tunes and the love of retro music is something we all can enjoy without the conflict that almost any other topic seems to stir up.
The air drumming is the best :D
@@SilentAttackTV You’d think a good guitarist like Rick would do air guitar on the big riffs….
His hand motions are so on point!
Nine Days is my favorite band, hands down! They have SO MANY WONDERFUL songs, they're SOOO underrated that it makes me sad really.
Alien Ant Farms album was EXCELLENT, so underrated.
I have always felt that "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" gained a massive amount of its popularity from the exposure it got as the soundtrack for one of the earliest iPod TV commercials. Instantly reminds me of the commercial. Great choice in the top 5.
It was on the Vodafone ads over here (UK).
I feel old. 🤣😂
It still gets tons of plays. I recently heard it in a few Netflix movies. Those residuals must be sweet.
GREAT Aussie Rock band.. I play this in my GEN X band (we are original Gen Xers)
As an Australian, they were one of the biggest bands around and were all over the radio for nearly a decade.
Can't forget Andrew W.K. "Party Hard" - the whole "I Get Wet" album is a punch in the face of glam metal awesomeness.
Hit yourself in the face with a brick and enjoy a listen. Don't forget to party hard.
Let's get a party goin'!!!
Omg yes
I recall how back in that time, I think it was Time or Newsweek, interviewed him and they were calling him the savior of Rock back then. I guess Rap/metal and Nu-metal were bad to boomers but Andrew W.K. was somehow for the deep thinker.
Plain White T's had a few hits. "Rhythm of Love' is IMO their best far and away.
So proud of myself for guessing #1 by the time the Top 5 rolled around.
Great job Rick!
Travis is an incredibly talented band. The album “the boy with no name,” whew that is absolutely stunning, every song
I was incredibly surprised to see Travis as a one hit wonder band on the list. I could name at least fifteeen great songs by them from the top of my head.
yea it seems to me that they definitely had other hits, especially that one we all know even more than this one.
@@cansueceklc7745 I had the album that came before the one that held the song he's considering their single hit, so that tells me they were successful on the radio before that. The Man Who had at least two singles that I can remember.
@@muddro420 From what I can remember they even had a few hits in the 90s. Why Does It Always Rain On Me?, Driftwood etc. They definitely had chart success in the UK way before.
The Man Who and The Invisible Band were great albums for me but after that they kind of lost it.
Loved the list. One gripe is “I believe in a thing called love” by the darkness. It was huge and it slaps.
Agree. He did an interview with Justin Hawkins of the Darkness. It's coming out in about a week.
One song that I wish I could go back and hear again for the first time is Somewhere Only We Know by Keane. It could’ve made this list or would make a good What Makes This Song Great video.
In what world is a song by Keane a one hit wonder?
I always thought Travi's "Side" was a better song. Always loved the bass line and the chorus is magic.
Ive only missed "wherever you will go" by the calling, to me its totally in the top 10 one hit wonder of the 00s for sure.
"Stacy's Mom" would be Number One on my list. Fountains of Wayne was such a terrific band. In addition to "Stacy," Welcome Interstate Managers contains my second-favorite FoW track, "Hey Julie."
totally!
Loved the first FoW album but not much after that
I absolutely LOVE "Halleys Waitress"
I managed to see FoW a couple of times in the late 90s and loved them both times. I lost track of them after Welcome Interstate Managers, but still listen to those first three albums.
I love these lists Rick. Coming from New Zealand the different perspective is fascinating and also a good reminder of songs and bands that time losses in your memory. Love it.
Very well put. 👍
alient ant farm also had Movies. hoobastank had tons of other hits like Crawling in the Dark, Out of Control, Running Away. La Roux also had armour love and in for the kill, hinder had get stoned and goodbye kiss. never heard of sing.
The BEST part of this list was Ricks air drumming!!!!
🤘😎🤘
You know it's a great song when Rick busts out the air drums.
Great list!
Seeing this in 2024 from Canada.. Many of these I personally can't say are one hit wonders based on the fact that they had intense followings or many hits even if they weren't top 10 type songs.
I love the list! Sad to not see blurry by puddle of mudd though.
"Fireflies" by Owl City would've been perfect for this list!
Problem is, he had another big hit with Carly Rae Jepsen, with the song Good Time. Quite possibly took both artists off the one hit wonder class.
Carly Rae has been a big consistent seller tho, much more than Owl City
"Face down" by *The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus* should be on here imo. I think that song was REALLY good and it wasn't a huge hit but it was hit especially in the pop-punk genre.
The intro to that song makes me always think that it's going to be "The Kids Aren't Alright" by the Offspring.
Yasss
@@OlYablesthose songs aren't even similar...
Calling Travis a one-hit wonder is more than a bit of a stretch. Their album "The Man Who" was certified 9× platinum by the BPI, their followup "The Invisible Band" was certified 4× platinum.
I'd say La Roux is equally as well known for In For The Kill. The comments warned me about Travis, but I 100% guessed the wrong song. Why Does It Always Rain On Me is definitely considered their most known in the UK, but personally I love Flowers In The Window.
I really thought "Float On" by Modest Mouse would be in the list. Maybe they had some other hits but that one stands out to me.
Travis are more than one hit wonders. And if they were to be one hit wonders, it'd definitely be for "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?".
Other than that, Thank You, Rick. You're an amazing breath of fresh air to music!
@ghost mall yeah of course, as I'm speaking from the other side of the pond! Guess that's the great appeal of music, there'll always be new music to discover!
Rain on me managed to get to 36 in the charts in the US. While Sing got to 14.
As Americans we have to deal with UK-oriented Wikipedia articles and Rock Music catalogs that call most of our biggest bands here "irrelevant," "dismissible" one-hit wonders because they charted low or only once on the UK charts (and because they aren't from the UK, which I guess you have to be, to be considered worthwhile). For some arbitrary reason, those UK descriptions end up being identified as the most "authoritative," despite the fact that those same bands chart multiple times and are huge influences and platinum sellers in the US and other parts of the world. It seems like an outsized amount of influence for one small collection of islands to wield, but wield it the UK does.
@@jeremysmetana8583 always interesting to get perspective from the other side of the pond. There are no doubt many American bands we have the same perspective on, and also no doubt other bands from around the world. Always intriguing to see how our favourite bands are perceived around the world. That's the beauty of music. The artists we know and love and think everybody knows are being discovered for the first time by somebody else. 🤘
@@bazahaza interesting to know! Cheers
TRAVIS IS SOOOO UNDERRATED!!!
Just found your channel.. brought lots of sweet memories back ,, thank you for posting these wonderful songs x
I have a soft spot for the 00s female power pop of Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, etc. Some really great songs in that era.
I loved Michelle Branch.
@@charlestompkins8431 Same here. She had great solo stuff, with Carlos Santana and with the country group The Wreckers.
Avril is my absolute favorite
Amy Lee isn't pop, but she's from that time and still going strong. Absolutely love her stuff.
I don't
I can't believe you didn't include "Lady" by Modjo. It's literally the biggest one hit wonder of all time. Maybe it wasn't big in US but in Europe it was played everywhere!
still a goddam banger to this day.
Finger Eleven were formally called the Rainbow Butt Monkeys (one of the loudest concerts I have ever seen). They were at one time produced by Arnold Lanni (formerly of Sheriff and Frozen Ghost. Finger Eleven had a few big hits up here in the Great White North (in fact within the last couple of weeks have just released a greatest hits album).
Yeah and their showcase was probably 98. They released Tip in Canada in 97 and signed with Windup and released it in 98 in the states. I saw more Creed shows than I ever would have wanted because they opened for them on so many tours. 😂
Saw them with I mother earth in kitchener Ontario Canada. Was amazing. I can see from the states they would have only had that one hit. But in Canada they were powerhouses for a long time
Thank you for blessing us with this
Travis had back to back albums that were multi-platinum and spent weeks at #1 on the charts in England. "Side" off of 'the Man Who' charted in the top 20 for the US and higher than 'Sing' on the Billboard Alternative charts. Both albums are pretty awesome and we're grossly overlooked in the US
Side is on The Invisible Band, not The Man Who.
@@alotofmilesfromhome I was going to say that.
And wasn't "Why does it always rain on me" a bigger song?
Their latest album is a return to their earlier form, check it out.
@@mrroundhill Exactly.
No joke, I was listening to Stacy's Mom just a few hours ago and thought it would make for a good What Makes This Song Great episode. A fun chord progression in the chorus, an out-of-nowhere key change, and mixed really well!
That was the best song on this list.
This song is the only way I can remember the lady's name who lives across the street from me....word association.
Cool song!
It’s a perfect pop song. So sad to hear that Adam was an early victim of covid
@@danstone8783 That one or the Teenage Dirtbag song. Listen to Iron Maiden, baby...
Man, Fountains of Wayne were awesome. Their song lyrics were so different than any other band.
Stretching the definition of a one-hit wonder here a bit!
Also, interesting inclusion of Teenage Dirtbag. They actually released a new version of it back in December called 'Christmas Dirtbag', and it was absolutely terrible!
Rick! Your bass playing friend Adam Schlesinger, who wrote Stacey's Mom, wrote another one hit wonder in the 90s right before forming the band Fountains of Wayne. He wrote a song called "That Thing You Do" for the Tom Hanks movie of the same name that became a hit in the mid 90s. Sucks so hard that Adam was one of the first high profile victims of covid. One of the best songwriters ever. R.I.P.
That thing you do should have been included in this list
Technically the "That Thing You Do" song was while FoW was a band. They had some earlier alt-rock success in the Grunge era with the fantastic tune "Radiation Vibe" which is one of my all-time fave 90s tunes.
Fountains of Wayne was such an amazing band. They may be known for "Stacy's Mom," but they have many, many great songs.
@@fearlessfreep Both the movie That Thing You Do! and the Fountains of Wayne self-titled debut were both released the first week of October in 1996. That's the record Radiation Vibe is on. Adam Schlesinger and Mike Viola's demo of That Thing You Do was recorded a year earlier and submitted for consideration for the film during the pre-production phase. FoW (the band) wasn't even officially formed until after the October 1996 self-titled debut which was recorded with just Adam, Chris Collingwood and Danny Weinkauf (Dominique Durand from Adams pre-existing band, Ivy also sang backup on one song). Jody Porter and Brian Young were not recruited to play guitar and drums until after the debut was released. When they joined, that's when FoW became an actual band (and not just a Adam and Chris recording project). So technically, (to use your word) That Thing You Do came before FoW was a band.
Adam was truly great indeed!!! He did a fantastic job on The Monkees "Good Times" album!!!
I can't believe Travis is on this list. I am a huge fan of their music. They're still making really good music
I've only ever heard 1/3 of those before. But I did love "Crazy". That is a great song.
So funny….been from southamerica, i’ve never heard like the half of the list and i can not believe that you think that Travis and Franz ferdinand are one hit wonder bands….Travis had Flowers in the window, Closer, what does always rain on me, selfish jean, etc….and with Franz Ferdinand there are so many songs from so many records, unbelievable! Once there was the first show of the killers in my country (in a festival thing), and that day played Travis first, after that more than half of the people live the arena because the killers was so unknow…Travis was the big thing that day….and that live show was so freaking good and funny….i miss them
La Roux's whole debut album was pretty big in the UK, especially Bulletproof, In for the Kill and Quicksand.
She is better than ever. Gullible fool is killer
@Matt Miller Agreed. She's almost single-handedly carrying synthpop right now.
I'm not your toy is amazing too!
The Skream remix of In for the Kill is incredible.
@Markus Buhmann For sure. His remix of La Roux's 'Finally' is good too.
Bowling for soup also had “high school never ends” and it was just as good!
Fun fact: Bowling For Soup played at Fry St Fair, in Denton, Tx, at Jims Diner in the 90s (way before it all got torn down and gentrified), and they were so much fun to see live (all because we happened to walk by at the time!
Travis and Franz Ferdinand were pretty big in the UK so had a few more hits there. Bowling for soup had a couple of other hits too including "girl all the bad guys want". But these where my teen years listening to every song on music channels and illegally downloading so I would be hyper critical 😀
I would also include - Last Resort by Papa Roach (maybe they had another hit?) and Bohemian Like You by Dandy Warholes
Yes Bohemian Like You was definitely a phenomenal OHW.
Not sure how big it was, but I love Travis' Driftwood.
Yeah I would never class Franz Ferdinand as one hit wonder, but maybe just cos I'm British
@@jameskilgour387 Me neither, and I'm brazilian ahahahaha
Papa Roach had a few other hits if I'm not mistaken; "Never Enough", "Not Listening", and "Getting Away with Murder" come to mind.
I would include ‘Wherever You Will Go” by The Calling. Great song that I sing till this day from time to time
Love that song. I honestly thought it was from the late 90s
I do too x
Adrienne was a big hit for them too though
2001 had some timeless bangers
I dont like it, but yes
Maybe I listened to the Hoobastank a thousand times, so I could be mislead.
Crawling in the dark was such an epic song!
Loved the opening guitar solo!
They do have a best of album!
I remember CITD on MTV!
Love your channel BTW!
Outstanding list of songs. Well done!
P.O.D had some wonderful hit songs! Youth of the Nation was pretty huge!
P.O.D. had several hits like youth of the nation, boom, and alive so they wouldn't be considered 1 hit wonders
Keyword "SOME", that's MORE THAN one!
La Roux "Bulletproof" was a huge hit when I took my teenage daughters to London in 2009. We all loved it. Great memories!
I'm a 35 y'o guy who just discovered the song in the last year or two - I'd heard it before but not thought much about it.
Never heard it til today. Don’t know that Travis song either
That whole La Roux album is dope
In for the kill was a great song as well. Some would argue even better than Bulletproof, so I wouldn’t call them a one hit wonder.
THIS TIME BABY I'LL BEEE
BULLLLETTTTTTPROOOOF
LaRoux, Travis, Franz Ferdinand and Jet one hit wonders? Maaaaaaaaaate!
LaRoux also had great songs like In For The Kill and I'm Not Your Toy.
Franz Ferdinand had This Fire, Tell Her Tonight, No You Girls, Do You Want To.
Travis' Driftwood is a beautiful song. They also had Why Does It Always Rain On Me.
As an Aussie, this one hurt the most. Jet had massive hits such as Look What You've Done, Shine On, Rip It Up, Show Me Where Your Mouth Is, Cold Hard Bitch, Get Me Outta Here and Rollover DJ.
I think Rick was just concentrating on the US Billboard Charts. See also the many comments about Finger Eleven
Daaaamn, this brings back memories.
I feel like KT Tunstall's song "Suddenly I See" should be up here
It wasn't a hit in the US, and that's where we can assume Rick is basing his list off of.
Black horse and cherry tree, other side of the world also big. It's a case like the magic numbers
@@mradhurley it was a hit in the USA
Didn't KT Tunstall have another song tho?
Finger 11 had MANY hits here in Canada, their song "one thing" was a massive international hit aswell, every kid from that time would remember it being played at school dances
That must explain it!
I thought that was missed, but most likely it's cause I live so close to Canada, that I don't always know where the things were hits. We get One Thing on the radio still here...
Truth!
More trivia for a great Canadian band - before changing their name to Finger 11, they were named Rainbow Butt Monkeys.
Could you tell me more about Chilliwack?
@@aliddle1
So are you in this band?
Fall for You by Secondhand Serenade came to mind as a one-hit wonder for me. Great video!
Paralyzer just took me back to early youtube. Definitely one of the anthems. Flashbacks to every other Halo 3/Cod4 video having it in the background.
That song is a pure banger!
Ceelo Greene is one of the very rare double one hit wonders: had a smash hit with Crazy in the mid 2000s with his duo Gnarls Barkley, than had another hit as a solo artist with Bruno Mars's producers: Forget You(y'all probably know what the uncensored version is lol).
Yes if nothing else because we've all felt that way at one time in our lives..😄
I like Ceelo's early-mid 2000s output. Quirky yet soulful and polished.
Didn't it come out that he was a giant rapist? I think that's why the marketing machine finally discarded him. T-rex armed douche.
@@robloxvids2233 Fuck
Goodie mob way before that.
A few more off the top of my head:
The Bravery - "An Honest Mistake"
Communique - "Perfect Weapon"
Hot Hot Heat - "Bandages"
The Veronicas - "Untouched"
The Donnas - "Take It Off"
Los Lonely Boys - "Heaven"
Snow Patrol - "Chasing Cars"
Believe by The Bravery and Middle Of Nowhere by Hot Hot Heat were pretty big.
Snow Patrol? 🌝
Yeah, not sure on Snow Patrol, even if Chasing Cars is their biggest. They had AT LEAST 4 or 5 hits.
Trapt - has Echo. Beautiful song
That whole WHEATUS album was great.
Finger Eleven had another hit that charted very well (#2 in US Adult), One Thing, released in 2003.
Right on
"First Time" & " Drag You Down" got me into Finger Eleven (a bit heavier than "Paralyzer" & "One Thing")
Don't forget Slow Chemical, their version of Kane's WWE theme song.
My "I partied with that band" story is Finger 11...the band partied and the singer went to sleep, haha. Still one of the most memorable nights of my life (especially being an aspiring musician at the time trying to make it myself)
That’s my favorite from them. I also like Good Times
Travis also had “ Why does it always rain on me?” among others.
Love that one. Fantastic album.
When I saw them mentioned in the comments I was certain that was gonna be the song on here.
Among MANY others!
As a Canadian, I'm surprised to see Finger Eleven on this list. They had a couple good albums here!!
WOW my teens years just flashing in front of my eyes! didnt remembered "Hey there Delilha". Jet and Franz Ferdinand where everywhere that time. Sound rock solid to this days
Can't belive Bowling for Soup are being called a 1 hit wonder. I LOVED them growing up. Always thought high-school never ends was a bigger song than 1985 too
Never heard of them.
