Ive been building these rdwc setups for about 12 years now, and i used to have a 1/2 hp chiller, but things happened and i dont have a chiller now, but i still built a small 2 site setup that was just kickicking ass until it wasnt. But this sounds perfect for my small 2 plant set up and would hold me over til i build a bigger set up needing a bigger chiller. I will tell you this. With the right sized chiller, in the past, i usullt average 1 1/2 - 2 lbs per plant when vegged for 6 - 8 weeks.
Yeah my yield on 4 plants is crazy. Plants weren’t even that big but I’m pretty sure I got at least 2 lbs because all of it was buds. You could check my hydro grow on my channel. My plants were fine without the chiller and just frozen water bottles but it became a hassle. My MVP was using H2O2(hydrogen peroxide) in the water, that immediately changed everything and I stopped using all those beneficial microbes everyone swears by.
Hi. Can you tell me if it is normal for the water pump to continue working and circulating water through the chiller, even when the chiller fan is in stopped mode because it is at the correct temperature? I see that although the chiller is not activated, the water is still running through the system and the pump is still activated.
Is the condensation on the outside of the buckets a problem? I saw it puddling up a little at the bottom of the buckets inside the tent….I think. Maybe it was just a reflection.
No not a problem, I have water built up from the humidifier. The only issue I would be concerned about is late flowering when you have to drop humidity or else you will increase the chances of white mold.
It can be an issue. It’s temperature loss which makes the chiller work harder and has the possibility of pooling on gear you don’t want wet. It’s also adding humidity, as he mentioned. More work on your dehumidifier and a real worry with PM or budrot in a tent or small space. Reflectix or Double Bubble are fairly inexpensive insulation that is easy to work with, and helps solve this issue. It also works great for keeping light out of the res /bucket lids and insulating them as well. It’s a couple degrees cooler than ambient, without a chiller, so in some instances, that stuff can be the difference between root root and a healthy res.
The best chillers for DWC specific is insulated buckets with a NovaTech Coolworks chiller probe, or a RDWC system with a real chiller (compressor/gas instead of peltier chiller). Lately i've been wanting to experiment with DWC and micro chillers, especially the compressor ones. Cool stuff. 🧊
I want to cool down 20 L of fresh chilled water (40F from the refrigerator) that comes out from my air cooler (after the circulation inside it from the reservoir, filter pads, etc) so the output water from the chiller be again at 40F that will drop back to the reservoir of the air cooler. Will that chiller could do it?
I am having horrid issues with my DWC buckets keeping the water SO HOT - usually over 80F degrees! I would love this but it still seems to me I would need a unit for EACH of my 3-6 buckets.......is that correct? One water chiller can only chill one 5 gallon bucket, is that right? If not, how do you hook it up to cool more than one? Thanks!

And when adding more nutrient solution, im guessing i drain the system and add the mixed nutes back in? Or do i too off? With that im scared of contamination or nute lock
Change every 10 days at least. Water temps are important but not critical. A few degrees over is fi e just watch for rot and use h2o2. Beneficial bacteria always failed for me so I go with sterilisation instead and it's cheaper. When changing res, drain it all and replace with fresh mixed nutes.
what is the size po the black hose? im ordering the chiller same im looking for the black hose, is 1.5-2meters away is ok or the it affect the cold wayer due to distance travelled in the long hose?

@@rickygoodman1294 cold is never really a factor because I have so many lights that add a ton of heat. Depending on the season, I choose my light accordingly
You do NOT want the chiller dumping cold water on the roots! It will retard the root growth and cut into your yield. I pull water from higher up in the reservoir and return it lower down. It mixes in the res before hitting the root zones.
I agree but as a Coco grower I'm moving to rdwc. My over head is fertilizer and medium ($350+ -) a grow 4 plants (autos) 5 gallon pots drain to waste. And I'm getting to the point I can't keep track on if I'm wasting nutes. So for my main grow in tent I'm moving to rdwc which I'm new to. One harvest will pay for the proper chiller in the increased yield from using it… And you’re going to spend 1/2 to 3/4 of that cost making one yourself. My time is worth more than that, and I don’t have to deal with the unpleasing aesthetic of a mini fridge or window ac in an otherwise high tech system.
@@HowWeedGrow Buy a used water cooler off market place ( $15- $35 ), one that you would normally put a 5 gal jug in the top. Now tear it apart so that you are left with the compressor and the cooling coil. Some of the cooling coils are coated in a protective plastic and some are not. If the one you have doesn't have a protective coating on it just wrap a plastic bag around the coil so you don't get any oxidation in your nutrients. Place the coil directly into your nutrient reservoir. Buy a device that will monitor your water temp. I use the ITC-308 ($50). Plug the compressor into the cooling plug on the device and set your water temps. I set my water temp at 67 deg and set the turn on temp at +2 deg (69).

Hey brother, a month later how is that chiller working for you.
Great. Just finished my hydro run, but then again, it’s been f’in cold lately so it’s still hard to tell if it’s the chiller or the weather. The true test will be summer
@@HowWeedGrow where you located? Im in tucson, az. and im still running 1000hps so you can imagine how hot it gets here
@@rickygoodman1294 NY
@@HowWeedGrow you got other factors to deal with i guess. Is the cold a factor in the winter?
@@rickygoodman1294 cold is never really a factor because I have so many lights that add a ton of heat. Depending on the season, I choose my light accordingly

Anyone use this in a gaming PC to over clock?
So it pulls water then returns it to the same spot the reservoir?
Yes
You do NOT want the chiller dumping cold water on the roots! It will retard the root growth and cut into your yield. I pull water from higher up in the reservoir and return it lower down. It mixes in the res before hitting the root zones.
rdwc is great but honestly coco is very close and so much less fkn around.
once you get drip down, coco is MUCH easier, but yield still isnt as great as hydro
But in the summer I can start some Coco grows and move them outside to increase yeilds
Also in Coco with autos in a 4*4 with an SF4000 I'm pulling a pound/ pound and a half dried and cure, excited to see if strait hydro will pump that number up
Yeah its nice to have the option of putting plants outside to flower. $350 sounds a lot for 1 grow. what are using ?

That water chiller DID NOT WORK FOR ME.
I find that sometimes you need to give it a jump start by kind of sucking water through the crappy pump. Sometimes you could do this by lifting it slightly higher then the Rez first. If not return it
@@HowWeedGrow Been done that long time ago.
I have a active aqua chiller 👍🏿💯👑
@dvance201240 works great for me... I am running 2 5g buckets with a 5g rez (9g+ total water) and my temps dropped from 76 to 68 and has stayed that way now for a week.
@TwiztidPOPS1 I was chilling about 25-30 gal, bit I stepped up and got a active aqua and it kept it from 65 to 70, easily.
any updates on this
Yeah. Works great but I converted my grows to sterile and now I don’t have to worry as much with water temps. Oddly, my basement is as cool as it is in the winter because of my home AC unit
@@HowWeedGrow How did you convert to sterile...? You putting in some hydrogen peroxide or other means?
@@djthomasvt yeah 2ml h2o2 per gallon in the Rez. That’s all, as long as water temps don’t go above 85, it’s worked out fine for me
@@HowWeedGrow Thanks for your quick response! I think I'm gonna have to go this route, my DWC bucket just tested at 83, but the sterile option seems cheaper, easier, and just less brain energy. Thanks for all your vids as well...they helped me out when I got started 9 months ago and looks like I'm still learning from ya.
@@djthomasvt great to hear, check this grow journal to see the level I advanced to. Mwahahahaha discord.gg/gfDKsbE8F2 I just do DWC now, seems much easier
Any update on how this thing is running a year later
Still good, I just swapped out the pump, the one included is trash
Wow
P
water chillers and ice buckets are for noobs, go get a mini fridge for your air pump.
I’ll pass. DIY is how I destroyed my house with a water filter that exploded.
@@HowWeedGrow my answer is a refridgerator for the air pump
Great stuff! Check us out sometime 🤜🏼
???????
.......
Im going to build one 😉
way cheaper 😁
Teach me how. This one is pretty week and I want to make a 30 gallon large reservoir.
@@Des420 Read my post at the top to build a DIY chiller for under $100 and you don't even need a pump!!
@@Ballme60 I already have two legit units, but thank you.
I can get you down to 68 deg F for under $100!
So tell me
Evey time I respond, it won't post it.
The reviews on that chiller are absolutely terrible
Yeah. It’s pretty bad. But it works for me. Main flaw is having to jump start the water because the pump is so weak
