I had the good fortune to meet Prince, briefly, at a British tv studio where I was working, back in the day. Part of the deal was that the studio had to reserve an entire luxury hotel for him and his entourage, with elaborate catering requirements etc.. In the end, Prince and his people flew in by private jet, recorded one song as agreed and immediately flew back to the US three hours later. The hotel was not told and neither were we. Frankly, I was not impressed as he seemed so full of himself, but this concert in memory of George Harrison made me realise he was indeed a gifted musician. If I had known then, I might not have been so quick to judgement! 😀

It's like everyone always knew what a gifted multi-instrumentalist he was, and that guitar was definitely at the forefront, but (my guess) because he wasn't strictly a rock musician, he never got mentioned with the likes of Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, etc for a very long time, even though many legendary rock guitarists will go on and on about Prince, with very high praise. Prince couldn't make the rehearsal, so Dhani (George's son on the acoustic alongside Tom Petty) just said he'd nod at him when it was his turn, and you see Dhani nod to that side of the stage and Prince step in to the centre stage. They had no idea what he was gonna do, and the big grin on Dhani's face is priceless. Thought by many to be Prince's greatest solo.

"...He stands off to the side for 3 minutes and 20 seconds, lets the other guys do their thing, then comes in and owns everything. This is the musical equivalent of dunking on someone. The best part is that, while at first perturbed, you can tell by the end that Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne aren't even upset about being upstaged. The story goes that Prince was late, and they didn't even want him to perform, but at the last second they relented. They all look ticked at him when he starts playing, but the best part of the video isn't just the solo, which good lord, but the fact that they can't stay mad at him. Prince is too irresistible. When he leans back, and the bodyguard catches him, you see Petty just break. He can t stay mad at him. Prince then stands up, still wailing, and looks at Petty like 'I got you, huh?' And Petty can t even fight it. He starts laughing. How could you stay mad at Prince?"

It’s too bad they didn’t list all the musicians playing, it’s a truly amazing line up of people with amazing, long careers. Tom Petty (he’s on acoustic and sings first) and from his band the Heartbreakers’ Scott Thurston (playing bass here) and drummer Steve Ferrone. From ELO Jeff Lynne (singing and electric guitar) and Marc Mann, the lead guitarist for Lynne’s band), Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic on organ), Jim Capaldi (from Traffic, with Winwood, back in the day) on percussion (tambourine), Billy Preston on piano (Billy toured with the Beatles and had hits on his own, Jim Dhani Harrison (George’s son) ... who looks just like his dad. George, along with Jeff, Tom, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison formed a group named The Traveling Wilbury’s. And of course Prince, who was also an inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that night.

He didn't practice before the event, he just asked that they left a spot for a solo at the end. Then destroyed the stage like the boss he is!

The guy you like at 4:52 is Jeff Lynne, lead singer for the Electric Light Orchestra. They have some wonderful music. Try "Don't Bring Me Down, ruclips.net/video/z9nkzaOPP6g/видео.html or living thing" -- ruclips.net/video/lvBOZCrJsAI/видео.html

I think Prince lay back facing the stage to play for George Harrison's son, who is just to the right of lead singer Tom Petty. This is a tribute to George (who also wrote this song and sang it for the Beatles).

Just watching this video, Love watching how happy you are watching a master at work. Of course he is one of the greatest of all time. If you Love him you will love Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Eddie Van Halen Stevie Ray Von, Billy Gibbons, One that gets forgotton a lot Brian May of Queen and Probably one of the best that died young Terry Kath of Chicago. You have to go back to early Chicago stuff.

Well, Dhani Harrison is the SON of a famous guitar player: George Harrison of the Beatles and solo act and also the Travelling Willburys. Prince, my fav, does the guitar solo crescendo as was agreed upon prior, though he did hold back a bit during rehearsals given that they had had some sound production issues - it helped sell the wow factor during the real thing. Steve Winwood is a famous keyboardist/piano player - everyone should check out "Roll With It" by him. And Tom Petty, yes, is a famous singer but is not bad on guitar. Jeff Lynne is also another famous singer and instrumentalist from Electric Light Orchestra which is a really great band with quite a few hits. Marc Mann on 1st lead guitar and Jim Capaldi on drums/percussion round out the rest of the performers paying homage to George Harrison's posthumous induction.

Glad your trademark smile was alive and well in this one. The original by the Beatles featuring Clapton is one of my favorite songs ever, and most covers of it do it justice. It's amazing how they make the guitars cry.
