This was such an iconic performance! What was your favorite part?
The 2nd singer - Jeff Lynne ( sunglasses & hat ) - lead singer of ELO has an awesome voice !!!
Yessss! Absolutely amazing! This whole performance was killer! Hope all is well!
@@setonhillstudios If you want to just listen to a song on your own which showcases Jeff Lynne's voice listen to Can't Get it Out of my Head by ELO
Dhani Harrison's face is the first reaction to Prince's solo, enjoying it so much, it adds to the tribute to his father.
Absolutely!
Prince threw that guitar up to heaven and George caught it...
Exactly! Such an amazing performance! Thanks for watching!
Prince thought the song was While My Guitar Gently Wails.
Believe it or not this solo was never rehearsed. Prince went to one rehearsal and they couldn't figure how to use Marc Mann and Prince on the solos so Petty told Prince how about you the ending solo. Prince agreed and they never saw him again until 20mins before they took the stage. To me that's wild and perfectly shows how much confidence Prince had playing music.
Tidbit: the guitar was tossed to a handler with instructions from Prince to give to Oprah Winfrey.
Prince left so much music spanning over 40yrs and released an album each of those 40yrs. That's bonkers.
Some of my favs of him getting down on the guitar would be..
Empty Room- live 2009 Montreux jazz festival
Whole Lotta Love - live at the Aladdin 2002
Santana Medley - live at Miami Glam Slam 1994
He was on the cover of every music magazine. Piano guitar bass drums no one else has done that
Unbelievable! Such a talent!
Your right the sad thing is thought the Songwriters Hall Of Fame STILL hasn't put Prince in there!!! I called them so many times that the woman who answers the phone there, its a NY number, got pissed off at me. I want Prince in there he deserves to be there. And he deserves to be inducted into the Kennedy Center Honers too and you can go vote for him too its open to the public I already did and sadly its one to a person. Jeff Lynne Was lead singer of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) ever heard the songs Evil Woman or Telephone Line plus... Then Steve Winwood you need to go look these guys up. I miss Tom too I loved him. Peace.
The guy I feel sorry for in this clip is the first guitarist - perfectly decent solo then Prince comes up and puts down one of the greatest of all time, then tosses his guitar away as if to say "Yeah, follow that"
I think his solo is under rate for sure and definitely got overshadowed by Prince unfortunately
You have got to see Prince's Play That Funky Music/Hollywood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage. He kills on guitar and bass. This performance was after the concert. He ended up doing 4 encores. This performance was encore #3 out of the four.
Wow that’s insane!
OH yes....oh yessssssss
so, what you should do is watch this performance when you go to the Hall of Fame in Cleveland. They used shots that were not aired. For example, when Prince leans back on his bodyguard, they actually have a shot of him layed out.....like 180 degrees...heels down, top of his boots up. If you watch close, he's still playing while laying back. Who else??????
Sounds awesome!
Prince & Petty have always been 2 of my favorites.
If you think P made the guitar weep in this clip...listen to Purple Rain live in Syracuse 1985. Grab your tissues.
You should react to Steve Winwood "Roll With It" sometime. Love Prince. R.I.P. to him, Tom Petty, and of course George Harrison.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Steve Winwood on the organ. He was with Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group
Such an awesome player! The organ adds so much foundation to the mix that so many people forget about! Not easy to find a great organ player that can adapt to any style either!
I saw a comment on another channel that Prince's guitar needs a cigarette when he's done with it.
Haha 😂🤣 That sounds about right! He is absolutely unbelievable!
Nah a Blunt so it could mellow back out 😂😂
@@rossislade7125 🤣
Apparently the guy just to the right of Petty ( on screen ) is Harrison's son
Oh cool! Thanks for sharing! Had no clue!
Yes it is, his name is Dhani
@@glennelfmann3143 Thanks! 😁
From what I remember, Prince was playing for Dhani, and to those who never wanted to listen before.
They didn’t even know what he was going to do because as he was on tour and had his own performance he didn’t rehearse with them
Gotcha! Thanks for the info and swinging by the channel! 😁
Great reaction!!! The first guitar soloist is Marc Mann he was in ELO with Jeff Lynne. I’m glad you shouted him out because his solo is definitely overlooked given Prince’s epic performance. Have you reacted to any Prince music? Are you familiar with it? I’d love to hear your perspective as a musician if you are interested in diving into Prince’s work. I’m happy to provide some recommendations with lots of guitar 😀 Really enjoyed your thoughts on this iconic performance 💜💜💜
Thanks so much for the kind words! I’ve heard Prince but never really sat down and analyzed his playing from a musician standpoint! More just as a fan. If you have suggestions, shoot him our way! Thanks so much for swinging by the channel and have a great day!
@@setonhillstudios Awesome!!! Now, I need to figure out which song to start with. There are sooooo many!!! Of course, you can never fail with “Purple Rain.” My favorite live performances of that classic are the one from the Syracuse show on the Purple Rain tour. It feels like he doesn’t want the show to end and just keeps playing and playing. The second is the 1985 American Music Awards. I love the passion he has for an award show performance.
But, I’m thinking that something a bit different might be cool. So, I think I’m going to suggest a bluesy song called “The Ride.”

@@JJlovesPrince Thanks so much! 💜
Prince couldn't rehearse with them and told Mark take the first solo I will do the second. When he looks over at Tom Petty, Tom was telling keep playing dude
Watching young Dhani Harrison looking so heartbroken while playing his guitar next to Tom Petty was absolutely heartwrenching.
However, true to form (as Prince had promised...), he would not only bring a smile to Dhani's face before the night was over, he had him laughing with his marvelous antics on stage - while not missing a beat in his flawless performance...!
Love that! Such a killer player and seemed to be a very genuine and kind person! Thanks for sharing!
An all-star band performed While My Guitar Gently Weeps, George Harrison’s (Well…maybe after “Something”) best-known Beatles song. The group featured Tom Petty and two other members of the Heartbreakers (Marc Mann who played the first lead you mentioned and Steve Ferrone on drums), as well as Jeff Lynne (electric light orchestra), Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group,Traffic,Blind Faith,Ginger Baker's Air Force and a huge solo career), Dhani Harrison (George’s son) and Prince, himself an inductee that year.
The other lead guitarist is Marc Mann who is very accomplished and has played with Lynn and George Harrison. Obviously Prince is off the charts here, at least with impressing the audience and adding his knowing touches. I always took him chucking the guitar as a statement against being snubbed off of Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest guitarists list. He was in shadow, stepped up to put his thing down, tossed the guitar and walked off like the pimp that he is! I love how much he smiles knowingly at the other artists on stage. Everyone looks like they are clearly having a good time but when he dips off the state, I love how we FINALLY get a reaction out of Tom Petty. He had been somewhat sleepwalking through the song, at least visually but from the dip forward, Petty clearly starts getting into the moment, stooping down and making eye contact. Great stuff but mostly I love how much fun Dhani is having. He is definitely NOT a poker player! One of my favorite musical performances of all time.
Here's my take on the guitar launching thing. To my eyes I'm guessing that he tossed it to the same guy who held him up when he leaned backwards into the crowd. Of course then it was all pre-planned. Even if Prince didn't care about giving it away there would be the whole consideration of someone getting hurt, lawsuits, etc. You can also see a couple of times when Prince was looking and responding to Tom Petty's queues, like when Tom must've given him a sign to go ahead and continue the solo for another eight bars.
Great point! That could do some real damage if it smacked somebody upside the head! 😳 Thanks for hanging out!
Well... Prince did what he wanted to do... but above all, he first and foremost honored the spirit of the song imho
Absolutely!
Me thinks George would've loved it.
That fantastic sounding organ - Steve Winwood
Gotcha, thanks for the heads up!
That was fantastic! Loved it. Thank you very much. 😀
Thanks Linda! So glad you enjoyed it! Amazing players on this video for sure! 😁
The other singer is Jeff Lynne....he was lead singer for ELO and was part of Traveling Wilburys with Tom Petty.
Also helped produce last Beatles record ‘Now and Then’
Earthquake sign of the times
Housequake
Eric Clapton played guitar on the Beatles version. Then George Harrison played on Clapton's song "Badge".
Super cool! Thanks for the info! So many legends during this performance. Thanks for watching! 😎
That is prince being santana
It should be mentioned that the guitarist that the camera has in the background of Tom Petty is DAHNI Harrison George Harrison's son, you know Harrison, the one who this tribute is 4.
There is a young 15 year old who plays Prince. He impressed Morris Hayes so much he was invited to Paisley Park for rhat celebration. Then he got to play at the palace theater later as headliner. Need to hear him do The Ride and Cream. 🤯🤯🤯🤯
While I do agree that it is absolutely a fantastic solo by all objective standards I think the main reason why it's become so iconic is because it's a side of Prince that most people never knew existed. The majority who aren't die hard fans of Prince's music and career will mostly know him from the major hits he had, those who got major airplay and those tracks are very, very far from what he's doing here. So it just wasn't expected that he would rock this hard.
Prince's solo is scientifically proven to be the best guitar solo ever performed. It's a fact!
Shewee! Can’t argue with science! 😁
I love Prince, but I’d put Jimmy Page Stairway to Heaven @Madison Square Garden above that😜
@@leannmiller7153 Definitely have to check that out! Never seen the live version
@@setonhillstudios that 1973 concert was epic. It was being filmed so the energy and quality is excellent! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
This was a high profile gig. But I've seen him do much better ones in his shows.
BTW, there is a back story to this one....as usual, Prince was not one to play with others. This performance is really an unique...for him to join another's stage...very odd and rare. Having said that, when the rehearsed this, he joined in but every time (apparently) it was his turn to take a solo that Michael Mann dude would play. Ultimately Prince left. He's awesome but not always easy to deal with. The story goes, he was annoyed with a RS magazine listing of greatest guitarists. He was not on the list..can you believe. So he set out to blow the top off on this performance. He told his keyboard player, he held back on the gas during the rehearsal but floored it during the show. Before anyone starts in about him show boating, two things - it is show business. If you've got the goods, let's see them. Also, Stevie Ray Vaughtn is the only other player who could pull 1/2 of this off.
Thanks for the backstory, much appreciated!
Jeff Lynne Lead Singer of the Great ELO! Heavily influenced by and produced some beatles records, and was in traveling wilburys with petty, orbison, harrison and dylan. Please Check ELO out Sweet Talkin Woman, Livin Thing, Evil Woman all live at wembley 2017 the entire concert is phenomenal!
Appreciate the suggestions! Definitely have to check out more from ELO! Thanks for watching! 😁
Prince threw the guitar up & it just vanished... were there strings attached? Nice ending flourish. What a showman.
Such a LEGEND! 🔥
I love Dhani Harrison's reaction to Prince leaning back, and being lifted back on stage. Have you listened yet to "The Traveling Wilburys"? Super group of Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan ( and legendary session drummer, George Keltner). "Handle Me With Care" is good for a start.
Yesss! So cool! There are so many “WOW” moments throughout this performance! Thanks for hanging out!
Sorry guys, that is not the right version. There's a "director's cut" in wich sometimes the screen splits showing some details and different angles. In this one (at the end of the commentary) you can see a roadie catching the guitar thrown to the air. That is something Prince did multiple times; I watch him doing it live at least two times with my own eyes.
THIS ONE! ruclips.net/video/3MC6s9HHonU/видео.html
Oh cool, wasn’t even aware something like this existed!
if its any sort of percussion or string instrument he played it only things he didnt play were brass and woodwinds
How do know Tom Petty but not Jeff Lynne? Jeff lynne co wrote and/or produced 3 out of 4 of Toms top selling albums! His own band ELO sold more albums than Tom Petty! This video is noted for Princes solo and after that Jeffs vocals. 🤷Btw i love Tom Petty too.
Prince says hold my beer
🤣😂 No doubt!
Check out America live 1985, his best video ♑💜
Appreciate the suggestion! Definitely have to check that out!
And the Internet did not explode when this video came out All Those Years Ago (
Don't forget George's son.
Tthey other day I came across a new song called Damaged by October ends , they is gonna blow up soon. React to it ASAP 🔥
We will check it out and add it to the list! Thanks for swinging by the channel!
Doing the time tom petty and prince at a beef
Thank u for this reaction👍🏾. If u want to look better stuff than this try Prince live in Montreux 2009.
Here is a part:

Appreciate it! Have a great one! 😄
Sorry, three words "Jeff Healey - Montreux" 1997. IMHO
I’ll have to check it out!
Billy preston on Organ who play with The Beatles plenty times
He's like the fifth beetle Also a bunch of rockoxtail, let legends. Prince and Tom petty didn't get along at that time.
That's why prince is off to the side
You’re a guitar player and don’t know who Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood are? You got some homework to do
Can’t know everybody 🤷🏻♂️ excited to be discovering more and more musicians though!
the simpsons should do a remake with Homer but ...he falls off stage!!! D 'OHH
🤣😂🤣
Bro - for all the hype about Prince (and it IS a fun solo, don't get me wrong) this is about George Harrison, and some of these guys that loved him - like Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Ray Cooper (the percussionist) not to mention his SON Dhani. Who looks just like George when HE was about that age. But yeah, the Prince showmanship is good...
No doubt about it! It was an amazing night with so many talented artists! Thanks for swinging by the channel!
@jefferytheis4147 it’s one of the reasons I’m not a big fan of Prince going off script here. I know he was pissed off about being left off Rolling Stones list, but this was supposed to be about George and he made it about himself. He was inducted just before George, he had his moment. Now, most are reacting to Prince, and not the great music George Harrison. I am a fan of Prince, too.
@@leannmiller7153 I can see that point for sure! Definitely have to pay respect where it’s due! Have a great one!
@@setonhillstudios sorry, I didn’t mean to single your reaction out. I love this channel, and Prince is amazing in this performance. I realize that most reactors are asked to react to Prince’s solo. It’s just sad, besides you, that most reactors don’t know why, or seem interested in who was being honored.
@@leannmiller7153 Right on Leann. And agreed - no disrespect at ALL to this particular reaction, I like these guys too
Research Traveling Wilburys
Correction: This performance is known for Prince, and Prince alone. Tom Petty barely moves and sings nothing extraordinary. In fact Jeff Lynne's part is more technically difficult and performed better. Petty is without a shadow of a doubt the most overrated figure in rock music history. He was fortunate the share the stage with the GOAT. And this was Prince's night as he was inducted, and this was the ending jam that these ceremonies typically ended with. That's the only reason Prince was there as he wasn't close with any of these people and never sought them out before nor after.
And he had a concert right after this. So he performed for himself, then this, then left and did that
I don’t think I’ve ever heard from someone who didn’t like Tom Petty. I can’t believe this. Everyone loves Petty
Agreed 100%
Who are you calling THE GOAT
Tom Petty was a true racist. He put an album out called Plantation with the confederate flag on the cover.
i am getting bored of all these because the son of goerge plays with them and no one notice - that´s the way
To not know who Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood are is... ridiculous.
🤷🏻♂️
NOBODY was better than Tom Petty
U talk too much, like about the percussionist, man... who cares?? Can we see the video??
You’re just a click away from watching the original video, it’s even linked in the description 🤣 why show up to a reaction channel and then get upset when people react or enjoy different things about the music? ✌🏼
