This was the induction of George Harrison, as a solo artist, into the Rock And Roll Hall of fame. George passed away in 2002. His son Dhani Harrison is the young man with dark hair next to Tom. Check out The Traveling Wilbury’s, a supergroup of friends George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison. They put out two albums. Prince was also inducted that night.
LeAnn Miller George passed away in 2001.

It really is insane when you look at the individual lives of each and how along the way they contributed so much to the world of music. Then plop them on one stage and let them bring it. Those three were all young and ambitious starting out just hoping to make a living making music they love. Three careers later and three lives lost, and the collective of what they contributed is off the charts.

The story goes that Rolling Stone had left Prince off the 50 greatest guitar players of all time list they had recently run. (He ranked a laughable 33rd on their 2011 list). And he was indignant. No one knows for sure, but most people around him figure he had plans to make them eat their words.
Prince shows up and is a very late last minute addition to the set. Tom Petty figures well, shit, since we have Prince, we may as well give him a solo.
During rehearsals, Jeff Lyne's guitar player steps in and does both the middle solo and the end solo. He plays Eric Clapton's solos (who had done the solo work on The White Album original version) basically note for note. Impressive stuff, really. But it's just some dude playing note for note. Whatever.
So the producer approaches Prince and tells him they'll give him the final solo and talk to the guy. Prince says "don't worry about it" and walks off. He barely did anything in rehearsals.
Then they get to the live show and Prince is off to the side playing rhythm guitar flawlessly like always. Totally invisible. You wouldn't even know he's there.
Then he steps up and absolutely goes off. He went way above and extra basically to stick it to Rolling Stone for being left off their miserable list.
Many people consider Prince the best rhythm guitarist in history. One of the reasons people don't know him as a masterful guitarist is because he was legendary by almost everyone as a rhythm guitarist with his band.
But if you watch his live shows, the guy could shred with the best of them. He's been named by many musical critics and musicians as the greatest guitarist since Hendrix. As one musician put it once Prince is so good at guitar that he's convinced the world he's not that good while still being just good enough to matter.
What really shines in this performance is not just his shredding. It's not just that he goes through at least 4 or 5 distinct styles of music in his solo. Or that he uses multiple methods from picking to strumming to tapping and beyond. What really sets this apart is that every single note, every single flourish, every single thing he does sits both within the song and outside it at the same time. His solo here never seems out of place like so many solos do. It feels like it fits the song, and, indeed, it flows with the melody of the song. But at the same time, there's no doubt that it's something new and brave and wonderful. It's not safe. It's way out there. But it's also right in the pocket.
All without a single moment of band rehearsal.

During his heyday, only Prince fans knew he was a Hendrix level guitarist. Except other guitarists. They knew. That's why all these much older legends gave him center stage at the end. One of the greatest drop the mic moments of all time. He did steal the show! He has been under rated as a guitarist. I get goose bumps every time I see it. Prince once again proving he was the coolest man in any room he entered. I can't help but get a little choked up watching a legend that was gone way too soon. George Harrison's son invited Prince to perform because George was a big fan of Prince.
Prince, no matter where he falls on the list of greatest guitarists of all time, there is no question he was a great one! That said, what was truly remarkable about Prince, the artist and musician, is the fact that he a multi-instrumentalist, song-writer/composer, mixer, producer. When it came to music, he could literally do it all. So prolific, there are vaults full of music he’s written that the world still has yet to hear. Then there was Prince the man, who secretly, silently was extremely passionate about his charitable work, but didn’t want it to be known. I was a rocker teen in the 80s and liked some of Prince’s songs and admired all the sexy women he seemed to never have a shortage of seemingly at his disposal, for lack of a better term. I knew he could play guitar and write songs, but when it came to the lead work in Let’s Go Crazy, for example, seeing the video, I questioned whether or not that was really him. I had never seen him live at that point, so I just wasn’t sure the little pop star could actually shred like that. It wasn’t until later that I came to fully appreciate and admire all he truly was and not only as a guitarist. Nothing short of brilliant. PS- search YT for Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top talking about Prince the guitarist. Interesting story!

Little did he know. He was actually my age, but I didn't hang over in that scene. I would have liked to have talked to him at least once.

Word on the street is that some of the performers didn't want Prince involved, so he was not invited to rehearsals until Tom Petty intervened. Prince told Petty to save some time for him at the end of the final performance, which he did. Notice the interaction between Prince and Petty. There's some non-verbal "sticking it to them" facial expressions going back and forth between them.
And that is why Prince did what he did (the walk off). Legendary artists. May he RIP.

That's not true..he didn't show up to the rehearsals because he was inducted that same night and had his own show to prepare for..he did go to 1 rehearsal and spoke to Tom Petty..Petty told Prince to do his thing..and the walk off was Prince being Prince!
I wasn’t a great fan of Prince back in the day, but on being older and listening to all forms of music over the decades, I must say, I was wrong, he has lasted the test of time and is great!
I saw Prince in concert, he for real was the truth on guitar.
I remember the first time I saw it when they played it on television I was speechless for those who don't know Eric Clapton plays guitar on the original recording with George Harrison and he kills it and I don't think anyone else could have done what Prince did that night with that song that was that big and it will be remembered for a long long time a lot of people don't realize how great a guitar player Prince was they found out that night

Another great Prince performance was his Super Bowl halftime performance. Legendary. Goes down as my favorite half-time show ever. Plus there is a short documentary video that shows all the behind the scenes and the build up to the show. Heavy rain was predicted and the producers asked Prince if he wanted to cancel, considering the risk of shock and slipping on the wet surface. Prince’s response? “Can you make it rain more? What a badass!

This has always been my favorite Prince moment or appearence. He destroyed that solo. It was so musically perfect and he knew he killed it. There is a moment ( 7:37 ) at the end where he smiles at Tom...You can just hear him saying "how bout that shit".

Jeff Lynne performed on Harrison albums, Tom Petty was in the Traveling Wilburys with Harrison, the black keyboard player was Billy Preston who played with the Beatles in the end and played with Harrison solo, the black drummer was Steve Ferrone from Tom Petty's band, and the young boy behind Tom Petty is Harrison's son Dhani.
Prince loves to play music they said back in the day after he would finish his big concerts he would go to a club in the city and play the rest of the night ,that's how you get a fan base

My first introduction to Prince was in the late 1970's (I think), and it was all guitar, and I was impressed. I also made the presumption that he was a quitarist first, then when he got really popular, it was more dancy. I think he's a fantastic guitarist. From what I gather, this performance was shortly after Rolling Stone magazine posted their top 100 guitarists, and Prince didn't make the list. I think this was his 'salute' to Rolling Stone magazine that he is truly an amazing guitarist.
Prince is not really world wide known for his guitar alone, but I tell you what anybody that really keeps up with greatest all time players got him on that list. He mastered several instruments he is hands down the best all around musician of all time. Miss that guy..Tom Petty to RIP
The story goes something like this. Prince wanted to perform with them because he was a fan of Tom Petty. George Harrison's wife didn't want Prince to perform with them because he wasn't part of the Beatles or The Traveling Wilburys but their son Dhani Harrison was like "no, I'm a fan of Prince I want him up there with us."
Prince was inducted in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame at the sane time as George Harrison. It was George's son Dhani who also is playing in this line up who requested and asked Prince to play guitar and hommage to his father. Any legends shine in that stage but Prince as always outshined. This also came at a time when Prince wasn't happy about being excluded as one of Rocks greatest guitarists. He believed he never truly got the recognition he deserved on that front.

A showcase of Prince is the 36th NAACP awards performance where he showcases other artists and just an amazing performance overall. A mini concert in truth at an awards show. Definitely worth checking out.
And Prince goes off on all of them, ha ha, yes love this and is great when Tom and Jeff later played together in The Traveling Wilburys. And that is Dhani Harrison next to Prince, George's son who has stepped in a played with bands, great to see he loves music and is a good musician as well. I love these honor shows when you get the greatest up on stage together and just jamming and having a great time.
Incredible performance from all of them. George was being inducted into the r&r hall of fame. Steve winwood has been a rock and legend since he was 17. He formed the band traffic with dave Mason. . Jeff Lynne formed the band electric light orchestra in the 70s. Tom petty formed tom petty and the heartbreakers in the 70s. Of course you know prince. And playing acoustic in the background was George's son.

The young guy behind Tom Petty is Geroge Harrison (know with the Beatles) is His Son in the back ground. Geroge Harrrison wrote the song, His Son name is Dhani Harrison the one you see in the back ground. PRINCE ! IS THE GREATEST MUSICIAN EVER !!!!! He played 12 instruments. And He was the one recorded All his songs by himself in the studio. Played All the instruments on All those records you heard him play. PERIOD !.
The original recording by the Beatles was done while they were getting on each other’s nerves. George was stopping by Eric Clapton’s house that morning to give Clapton a ride into the city. On the way, George asked Clapton if he’d play a solo on this song. Clapton initially said “Oh no, the others wouldn’t like that.” George said “Ah, don’t worry about that. You’re my friend and I want you to play the solo on my song.” When they walked into the studio the other Beatles (seeing Clapton) were on their best behavior. George informed the other’s that Clapton was going to play on his song. And that’s that.

This was at George's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, a few years after George had passed. Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty were two of George's best friends, and were there to induct him. I believe Steve Winwood was also a friend of George's. The young guy on the stage playing guitar was George's son Dhani. Prince was there because he was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that year. It was kind of a last-minute decision for Prince to join this performance, but Prince was a big fan of George, so he wanted to do it.

Gave me goose bumps too, and still does. Iconic performance cementing Prince as one of the greatest writers and musicians of his time, likely remembered as the Mozart of this era. Wonderful to see he is so appreciated.
I had the pleasure of seeing Prince on multiple occasions, from concerts like the Lovesexy Tour to impromptu jam sessions at little night clubs where he would show up and just have fun.
The Lovesexy Tour concert was the second best concert I ever seen just behind Earth, Wind & Fire. Prince came out on stage driving a 67 Thunderbird convertible. It was a great concert.
I never understood why Prince never really went off on guitar on his albums but you can hear it in different songs.
The Isley Brothers are another guitar heavy group that you wouldn't expect. Seriously, just listen to Go For Your Guns, Voyage To Atlantis and the like. They are heavy.

I saw this performance when it first aired on TV and I cried and I still cry to this day when I see this. They were paying tribute to George Harrison he wrote this song.
They asked Prince to play the guitar riff that George Harrison played in this song and he went beyond what they asked for most of the guys that are on stage have passed but never forgotten.

There were some serious heavy hitters on that stage that night and Prince owned them all. The number of change ups he did in his performance was just amazing. He did right by George and the Harrison family. RIP George Harrison, Tom Petty, and Prince. Each a goat.
This is one of my favorite Prince moments. It is the George Harrison Tribute for his induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I believe that Rolling Stone had also come out with its 50 Greatest Guitarists of all Time and Prince wasn't on the list. So he showed them. I love how they are all smiling at each other and the sheer joy on Dhani's face at being on stage with these amazing guitarists. If I need to lift my spirits I watch this clip.
Glad to see somebody finally got around to seeing that. This was at the R&R Hall of Fame. The song was a tribute to George Harrison who wrote it. That's George's son playing next to Tom Petty (RIP). Prince came out and did what he did. He showed off and showed out. He played some gamesmanship with the other players when he faced them and had his guy push hime back up (same guy catches his guitar walk-off). Some years later, Harrison's son, Dahni, expressed that Prince was putting it in their faces (which is what he WAS doing). That's the coldest Pimp-walk off EVER.
I always gave Prince props from the start, saw Purple Rain and all but this still blew me away how he interpreted the solo on this. I also was further impressed by the man as I learned more about him. Steve Winwood is underrated IMO despite his accolades. He is such a key piece of the music of the 70's and later. His bands, his solo work, his guitar cords and of course his WORLD CLASS voice. I have him akin to Joni Mitchell in voice for a male. Jeff Lynne ELO is mind blowing good, so many hits! Tom Petty....Prince....gone too soon legends! and to have Georges son on stage to witness and be a part of it all - heart warming!

This was a tribute concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jeff Lynne was from Electra Light Orchestra and played with George Harrison as was Tom Petty (from the Heartbreakers and Traveling Wilburys). Steve Winwood is a legend. He was a 17 y.o. prodigy when he joined "Buffalo Springfield" ("For What it's Worth"). You know him. He was good friends and a pupil to Jimi Hendrix. He had some success into the 80's as a solo artist with "Higher Love" with Chaka Khan. Anyway, yeah, Prince was the King and is in my book.

You guys have to watch Prince Super Bowl performance. He basically performed in a monsoon rain storm. Walking around a rain soak stage in his steletto heels performing. They actually did a documentary on his performance because of how great it was & the conditions. A must watch.

@@ffjsb Prince was a genius, no doubt, but so were the Beatles. As songwriters, they stand alone in terms of the varied nature and quality of their output. Their singing ability is above that of Prince. I give Prince the nod as far as an instrumentalist.
