Is Prince considered one of the greatest guitarist of all time?
In my opinion, yes.
Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Frank Zappa, Johnny Winter, nearly every blues guitarist are all probably better. Price is finitely underrated, just watch his video "concert" Sign O' the Times, I would compare that to Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains The Same
He is great. Maybe under rated. There are better IMO.
YES! YES! YES! he plays 21 instruments and is a master of 19 of them according to documentary.......Supernatural talent, RIP PRINCE greatly missed! oh and by they way he did not rehearse this was on the fly they did not know what he was going to do.
Hendrix, Page, Vaughn, Winter were innovators who built on the early American blues artists, and created the genre we now loosely call “blues rock”. All are considered guitar gods. They created much of what others did later. Prince was of the next generation, and was one of the greatest musicians of my lifetime. This much is indisputable. His music didn’t fit the “guitar god” mode of the others, and I feel that’s possibly why he didn’t get the recognition. IMO he’s up there with those other guys, and had complete mastery if his instrument. Just my opinion, though.
Dani Harrison was a huge Prince fan. When Dani heard that his father abdvPrince were both to be inducted unto the Rock Hall of Fame on the sane night, Dani asked if Prince would join the already tremendous line up and play the guitar solo. Prince did not disappoint. He was such a great performer his guitar playing was often underestimated.
Prince also told Dani he was determined to make him smile during the performance.
👑 ☮️{+> 👑
They both got their wish!
You might want to look up the Nina Blackwood interview of Dani Harrison. He doesn’t sound like a Prince fan.
@@tracyjohnson5023 he did
Let's be honest, Prince took this song to another stratosphere with his solo.
RIP The Purple One 💜💔
Rest in Peace, Tom Petty, Prince, George Harrison. Three of the all-time greatest musicians and song writers!
I like toking at midnight because of Tom Petty.
Correct!
I remember when Prince performed at the Super Bowl and the guys on sports talk radio stations here in Boston were blown away by Prince's guitar performance. They thought Prince sang pop songs. They had no idea Prince is one of the GOAT's of all time on the guitar. How cool would it have been if Prince had been one of the Traveling Wilbury's?
ummm yeh but NO!
And, in the Super Bowl, he played Purple Rain --- outside! -- in *POURING RAIN* !! -- with an *ELECTRIC GUITAR* !!!
(Did I mention the rain storm...?) 😳😱🤯
If you're gonna play that game, I can imagine him performing in a hard rock band. More in line with Jimi Hendrix, or Led Zeppelin. But he had his own vision.
Don't forget Prince played in a fucking thunderstorm of epic proportions....on a slick surface. It WAS and IS the BEST Stupid Bowl preformance of all time and ...unless something odd happens ....will NEVER EVER be topped.
Prince defo should've been part of a big band, he on his own went too weird and didn't capitalize on his talents enough imo. Shows here when he is working WITH other legends he can shine. Total legend and the most underrated guitarist of all time
He threw his guitar to God to hold for him til he got there RIP Prince 💜💜💜 I was blessed to have seen him 3 times.
Prince was a true Christian when he passed away!!

I'm still angry
Oh ffs , you must be Murican
@@mztweety1374 DITTO!
I watch this video every so often, just for the Prince solo. It gives me chills every time I hear it. Prince was a musical genius.
Ditto!
Same, the song is boring as shit for me, just not my style, but Prince's solo is fire.
I column ear gasms.
Same. Have never seen anything like it.
Me too ❤
Prince didn't play an instrument, he was part of the instrument! RIP
We forget how good Prince was as a guitar player. But everyone up there can play.
Correct. Everyone on stage is a legend in their own right.
@@TheAdventuresofTNT I was surprised you didn't give a shout out to Jeff Lynne. I thought you liked ELO. Maybe I'm thinking of your wife. Jeff sang just as much in this performance as Petty did. Jeff and George Harrison were best friends for the last 15 years of George's life. Jeff resurrected George's career by producing and co-writing a hit album for him in the late '80s--which included a song you reacted to, "Got My Mind Set On You"--and they immediately became best mates (to use a British word). ps~Please react to more ELO! :)
Steve Winwood was the other guitar player up there. You should look at the song my sweet lord from the same "concert for george." Billy preston kills the vocals and on piano.
@@joe-zj8js Umm, no. Winwood was on keys in the back.
Prince and George Harrison - the Beatle who wrote this song were both being inducted into the Hall of Fame that night.
First guy doing the solo thought he was tearing it up..Prince stepped up and said "Class is in session!"
A fabulous cover of this Beatles song from their white album. So much talent in one place on one song!! Omg!! Marvelous!!
It was a George Harrison song, not a Beatles song.
@@fridaylong2812 Um sorry, it was a Beatles song on their white album. Harrison wrote it but released as a Beatles song. Eric Clapton played the guitar solo on the original track.
Peter Frampton did the best version of this. I am almost positive ya never heard of him.
Bet I listened to his live Album this week :)
@@fridaylong2812 it was George's greatest contribution to the Beatle library ..
Prince is a guitar god. RIP Tom and Prince. What a great performance, one of my favorites. It's a dark day when those talents leave us, but it makes us appreciate them even more. Thanks for watching this one!!
Hard to believe they're both gone
MANY thought to be dead are ALIVE!
Many thought to be alive are DEAD!
George, Tom, and Prince are all together now and those heavenly guitars are definitely jammin'.
I've read that Tom said they didn't rehearse this with Prince. Prince talked to Tom, and just said, I'll do some guitar work, or words to that effect.
And if you notice, as they play, Prince is constantly looking at Tom, getting a feel for where the song is going, putting in the licks where they fit, then as he sees Tom is wrapping it up, Prince gives it that huge finish.
Prince shines here, but he's also part of the team, taking a great song and tribute, and making it absolutely unforgettable.
This whole thing was in honor of George Harrison, who had passed from cancer. He wrote and performed this song before he died.
The young man with the black hair and dark shirt, to the left of Tom Petty, is George Harrison's son.
Prince made love to that guitar. What an EPIC performance! This video never gets old. Prince is the GOAT!
So George Harrison's son Dhani personally asked Prince to perform in this tribute to his dad at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. On the day of the performance Prince was late to the award ceremony. He hadn't rehearsed with the band. And the band actually went on stage without him. Prince literally showed up at the last minute and only just followed them on stage on the nick of time. Dhani Harrison however didn't even realise that Prince had made it. He only notices Prince is actually on stage with them halfway through the song at 2:03, when Dhani finally turns left and sees Prince. At 2:16 they catch eyes and smile. And at 3:35, Dhani Looks at Prince, nods at him to say "Go on, go for it!". Then Prince begins an absolute face melter which has since gone down as one of the best guitar solos in history.
I totally LOVE the huge smile on George's son's face as Prince is going off.
I love the smile on Prince's face. He knows he is absolutely killing it. One of the greatest moments in rock history, IMO. Prince was in a league of his own.
George Harrison Song, That is his son standing next to Tom Petty, playing the acoustic guitar!
Jeff and Tom's harmonies are amazing.
I love their vocals on this song. Tender and plaintive singing...reminiscent of George Harrison's tone. They did the song justice.
This performance only proves that Prince was and is one of the greatest performers of our generation. Simply a legend !
Prince is certainly a great musician. And here he showed us not only his talent, but also opened his soul to us. HE DESERVES THE HALL OF FAME.
the ultimate "drop mic" by Prince.
Prince played like this on the Super Bowl halftime show too. Greatest halftime show ever. Many were shocked how fantastic he could play guitar. SO many did not expect this
There's a good video out there about his Super Bowl show. The stage manager was really worried about the rain...Prince said can you make it rain harder?
That halftime was way better than the football game. Prince took no prisoners.
I had the pleasure of seeing Prince in concert twice in my life time, and he never disappoint........ He is truly missed.
Me too
Prince definitely was a badass guitar player. I’ve watched this video several times over the years and his solo is just awesome
Yes, he was. He killed 🎸 it on this video💜.
Will never get over the Beatles for giving us so much variety n depth.
👍
😂
Prince is mostly known for his 80's style, but is underrated as a guitar player! I remember being in the Air Force in the early 90's and a friend let me borrow Prince's new cassette tape. I t didn't get much play on the radio, but I was blown away by the guitar work!
when i heard his song bambi off his 2nd album i knew he was great guitarist.
@@vino1954 Exactly! Same.
Prince could play pretty much any instrument and was exceptionally talented with most of them. His guitar & bass work are probably his best work.
A beautiful tribute to George Harrison. Rest in Peace, George, and thank you for all the great music. Prince was friggin' incredible.
And the performance was even more incredible when you know the story leading up to this show.
Yeah, Rolling Stone magazine f'd up and left him off their list (they later said he was supposed to be on it but the name got lost in the shuffle) of the Top 100 Guitarists. Rolling Stone editor was in the crowd. Prince made it his mission to let them know they goofed. Something the Prince friends would have already known (New Power people are called friends instead of fans because fan is short for fanatic).
The young gentleman you see by Tom that was smiling with Prince before he began was George Harrison'e look alike son Dhani ( pronounced by himself as Danny ). I watched this live that night, I knew how close friends everyone on that stage was to George, and as an avid Beatles/George was my fave fan) trust when I say I went through more than one box of kleenex. Yes, Prince is who is so awesome in this and deserves the accolades 100%, but it was all so much much more...a group of friends who all knew each other coming together for their fellow brother.
Yep
This performance moves me EVERYTIME! I miss Prince. 4/21 and I hurt every year.
This is from the Tribute to George (one yr after the passing of George Harrison)...Prince really kicked it up a notch with his fine solo...
It was actually from the Rock and roll hall of Fame induction ceremony. Both George and Prince were inducted that night.
Dude, T's smile getting bigger and bigger the closer we get to the Prince solo ("Just wait!") is me every time I watch this. Great content, guys! 😂
The sheer amount of legendary talent on that stage and then there’s Prince. He stole the whole show with that guitar solo. He changed his style up so many times right there at the end it’s incredible. But that’s Prince! RIP Tom Petty and Prince.
This will always be one the most iconic performances ever, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Oh, when Prince started playing, I swear my soul shook. He was and always will be the best. He is still so relevant and loved here in the cities.
Prince was a phenomenal artist. His guitar solo is epic in this song.
Prince killed it , most underrated guitarist ever
Prince is amazing and so talented 💜 There isn't anyone with more talent and he's great at everything! I was lucky enough to see him live over 20 times
A Fantastic Cover of this Terrific Beatles Song !!! Prince's Guitar 🎸 solo is indeed Epic !!! ( RIP ) 👍👍😎
Great performance by all, indeed... However Prince runs completely away with it and rips it to shreds. 😆
Purple Reign forever!! 💜💜
I never got to see Prince live. But every video I've seen him in, I cannot take my eyes off of him. So electric.
It was truly amazing to see your wife’s reaction to this. 19 years later, Prince fans like myself are still in absolute awe at this unbelievable performance. It is truly one of the greatest moments in rock history…period. I once heard that Prince had never heard the song until he was sent the DAT to learn it. It was actually Prince’s idea to perform last; the producers actually wanted him to go first, I believe, but because he’s PRINCE, of course he knew exactly what he wanted to achieve by giving the last solo. Did you notice that the color scheme of his outfit perfectly matched the backdrop of the stage? I’m quite sure that was no accident…he knew exactly what he was doing. I sat and listened to a panel of some of his engineers at Paisley Park a few years ago and his guitar engineer discussed this performance. He said Prince tossed him the guitar and told him to give it to Oprah as a gift. What else can be said? We will never ever see the likes of Prince again in our lifetime.
It’s such an amazing performance! Nobody puts Prince in the corner. He did steal the show!!The only problem with the double screen at times is that it doesn’t show Dhani Harrison’s face as much. Dhani is amazed, smiling from ear to ear as he watches and hears Prince play his dad’s best song so fantastically! He loves it! I love it! Glad you two love it!
Rolling Stone magazine had just published it’s top 100 guitarists of all time. Prince didn’t make the list. And he was pissed. This epic solo should show you just how angry he was.
Was gonna say that. Rolling Stone dumped on Zeppelin too…
Rolling Stone - full of crap as usual. RRHOF hates Kansas and Jethro Tull as well.
I heard he didn't show up for practice either.
@@kens32052 he didn't need to. He was truly just that talented.
Glen Campbell didn't make it either. Go check his visit with all the country people as he does "Gentle on MY Mind' then says "I'll play one" and proceeds to play that guitar better than anyone coulda done. It was an AMAZING performance. Yeah . And he does a "william tell overture" as well that is mind blowing. But he aint a guitar player worthy of Rolling Stone. Rolling stone wouldn't know music if it got jammed up their ass.
RnR Hall of Fame ceremonies can be mind blowing. Geniuses and poets everywhere 👍🏼🍻
A jaw-dropping solo from Prince…the other guys are loving it
I sometimes think the total package of Prince overshadowed the brilliant components of Prince. His voice, his songwriting, his dancing, his fashion, his ability to find and nurture talent, his ability as a producer, and, yes, his instrumental skills, particularly with the guitar. Any of those taken alone would be enough to nurture a career. With him, they sometimes end up subsumed by the totality of the supernova known as Prince.
Prince was a super confident performer because he KNEW the incredible talent he possessed,he makes it look easy.
RIP Prince
RIP Tom.
Love, love, love this song, this tribute, these legends. Thank you ALL for the music and being a part of our lives. Thank you for the reaction. Remember these solos TALK to you. " listen."
Prince was known as one the best session guitarists on the planet.
Most definitely one of Prince's finest moments. Gives me chills every time I watch it.
No, U don't know? U didn't went live? I did, even after shows. He was the goat. And I knew it. So, shills all over my body. This guy was almost not human.
Tom Petty was so proud to be part of the "family" that was started by George Harrison (of The Beatles) and Jeff Lynne (of the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)). The family became The Traveling Wilburys. On stage singing was Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, and the first amazing guitarist was Steve Winwood (a 70's and 80's legend) and, of course Dhani Harrison (George's son) on acoustic guitar.
I'm pretty that was Marc Mann playing the other lead guitar, Winwood usually plays keyboards.
Steve Winwood sometimes plays guitar, but he is playing organ on this cut. And let's not forget "Fifth Beatle" Billy Preston on piano, Steve Ferrone (originally from the Average White Band) on drums, and Jim Capaldi (of Traffic) on percussion. That's a band of rock legends right there, and Prince takes his rightful place among them.
@montalbans I think I remember seeing Winwood play sax, guitar, keyboard and sing in 1 song
The talent on the stage that day was legendary.
Prince had a bit of an attitude for this recording due to being dissed as a guitar player by some media chump. Man was one of the best guitarist in the industry
This was an iconic performance by Prince. Some poetic fans said that Prince’s guitar never landed on earth-it’s floating in ether until the rock gods retrieved it and presented it to George Harrison. Great reaction.
Absolutely my most favorite version of this song. God bless Prince and his beautiful spirit. AMAZING 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Prince was never seen as a guitar shredder but this performance opened up everyone's ears ..You could tell he liked the song and he put it all in for it..
Well, Prince fans knew.
Man that solo hits so hard. Its not technically hard but it trully matches the song
Especially when he didn't practice with them. PURE NATURAL TALENT. THE PURPLE GOD 🤘🏾💜
Was fortunate to see him live in 2014, depending on what reading you do on Prince but its pretty well documented he was proficient in playing 10-12 different instruments by the time he was a teen but guitar was his first love, Hendrix was a huge influence for him.
Prince puts on an absolute clinic here. I never realized how great of a guitarist he was until I watched this a couple years back. He definitely stole the show on a stage of very talented people.
Nobody plays the guitar with more swagger than Prince
Hendrix did.
Love this song, and this performance, my favorite is also seeing George Harrison's playing with the guys. He's definitely his fathers son.❤❤❤
Dhani Harrison would be the one playing with the guys, George Harrison's son.
@@cryptozoomauler5505 Love these guys!!!!💗
There were 3 Legends on that stage, and 1 LLEEGGEENNDDDD!!! 👑 🎸
Rolling Stone published their list of top 100 guitarists just before this, and Prince wasn't on it. Apparently RS execs were in the crowd and this was Prince's response. Epic!
RIP George, Tom, and Prince. This was just a small glimpse into the talent of Prince, he was amazing!
You are right, musicianship is something that needs to be learned. Technology will never have anyone jamming like that! That was pure love of the game and craft. The G.O.A.T. Period!
Before this performance in 2004, everybody told us « Why you keep coming to his concert? »
After : « Why I’ve never came to his concert? »
😆
Great reaction ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️! R.I.P. Prince ❤. And you are right , as time passes , a lot of people are going to miss out ! There is not a lot of people at all that have talent like this on todays music.
That’s a BAD man! What a group of musicians on that stage!
Must have seen this about 80 times lol, can't stop watching it. It's beautiful.
Tom Petty (Heartbreakers, The Traveling Wilburys) - lead vocals, guitar
Jeff Lynne (ELO, The Traveling Wilburys) - co-lead vocals, guitar
Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith)- organ
Dhani Harrison - guitar, backing vocals
Jeff Young (Jackson Browne) - piano
Marc Mann (ELO, Oingo Boingo) - lead guitar
Scott Thurston (The Motels, The Heartbreakers) - bass
Steve Ferrone (AWB, Duran Duran, The Heartbreakers) - drums
Jim Capaldi (Traffic) - persussion, tambourine
Prince (aka "that handsome little guy with the red hat") - soul, swagger, heat, sexiness
George Harrison - spiritual guidance
Eric Clapton - blues inspiration
Jimi Hendrix - cosmic influence
It's sad we'll never see anyone like prince ever again.
Prince was sooooo underrated as a guitarist/musician. I read once that he played like 22 instruments WELL. Not just dabbled around with them, could play them well. A true legend. 💜
that was by design
Its crazy to me that most of the time when people start talking about guitar greats...very rarely is Prince mentioned. He is great in is own right, a G.O.A.T. for sure.
One of the greatest songs ever. And then Prince drops by. O.M.G. RIP PRINCE. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
You really should do Prince ...Play that funky music (live).. awesome cover
Prince, one of the greatest guitar players, muscians and performers of all time.
Dhani looks so much like his father. And then there's Prince. Incredible lineup of talent for this song.
Old school metal fan here and I never ever even knew Prince knew how to play a guitar until I seen this video a while back.I couldn't believe he could shred like he did.Got to respect those abilities there.
Prince really kills it on a Beatles ( George) song doesn’t he?
REST IN PEACE PRINCE 🕊️💜💜💜💜💜 AND TOM PETTY 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️😇
Talent, style, stage performance. Prince was the whole package.
Nice to see you youngun’s seeing what we saw in the 70’ , 80’s , 90’s….real live music and performances. Prince was SO talented!
Georges Son looks like Dad.
He sure does
He certainly does
George wouldn't have been able to denied being his dad, even if he'd wanted to
Because he looks that much like George
As great as this is, the best guitar playing ever for this song was by Gary Moore who played lead guitar for this in George Harrison's last ever concert! The video for Harrison's last show was a collection of amatures videos but the audio is still quite good! You should react to it!
..same here, buddy. I saw Gary live on stage only once. But i saw him Here in Germany 1989. Unbelieveable, Unforgetable...in my opinion Gary was the best. In everything...R.I.P. Gary
Stay safe, Robert...
Epic solo by Prince on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at The Concert for George (Harrison) Nov. 2002 (one year after George Harrison died). Years later Prince passed away in 2016 🥀🕊🥀
Tom Petty passed away in 2017 - both unexpectedly 🥀🕊🥀
In the movie "Eddie and the Cruiser 2: Eddie Lives", early on, Eddie sits down with a young guitarist and they are jamming together. The young guitarist breaks into this wild solo that wasn't bad, which is what Eddie told him to which the younger player got offended and challenges Eddie to teach "ME" something. Well, he gets a lesson, rather than fancy riffs and fancy noise, Eddie turns it melodic. It's amazing and Eddie looks at the kid and says, "music's gotta live man, its gotta breathe". That is what you just saw. I've watched alot of Prince, he was amazing, but this, IMO, was the best I ever heard him play. He felt it, you felt it, everyone felt it and therein is yet another example of what music can do when it lives. Love watching you two btw.
This is a George Harrison song, former beatle. George Harrison Tom Petty Prince I think that's all of them those those fellows are all gone. Those three are three gentleman you don't lumped together music-wise these three artists are stand-alone geniuses in their own right. They all have their own style their own genius their own sounds their own style their own sound just like hundreds of others you just don't compare them against each other enjoy them on their own merits.
As a lifelong Beatles fan… and I mean lifelong, I was born in 1962, I think Prince absolutely killed this. It was an amazing event and an amazing performance.
I love how all of the other performers are just shaking their head at what Prince is doing and the look he gives them. I know I am killing this, you know I am killing this the whole freaking world knows I am killing this. Ultimate mic drop.
Just phenomenal talent on stage. Prince stole the show. He was a extraordinary musician. Was underrated as a guitar player and could hold his own with most - his showmanship was off the charts.
The build up is everything. When showing this to someone new to it, you just want to say, "BUT WAIT!!!" What Prince could do with a guitar was genius and magical. Like he was born with it in hand. Thanks for the reaction!
Now that is SWAG! Wow, love that solo. Prince, man. What an incredible guitar GOD. Killing it. So cool, and dirty. That is how you do it. And still in tune with that great band. Man o man.
Prince was amazingly talented! So much swag too haha😎
Man I miss Prince! Being a teenager in the 80's was a real blessing.
great questioon. The reason for this featured performance was a list was done of the top 50 guitartists. Prince was not included so,. with the support of the other artists was given the chance to suggest that omission might have been erroneous. I think he proved his point.
this video is awesome for 2 reasons! i'm a huge fan of the Beatles! 2 alot of people did not believe that Prince could really play guitar and this was his way of saving FU!
I believe a week before this performance, Rolling Stone released a list of the top 100 guitarist and Prince was not on it. So I guess he wanted people to know!!! Prince was the greatest musician to walk the earth. I’m so blessed to have seen him perform over 10 times. There will never be another!!!
This was the tribute to George Harrison concert; this song was written by him btw. That's his son Dhani next to Tom Petty. Steve Winwood on organ.
The look between Tom Petty and Prince is so beautiful, they smile at each other. Tom was like "Do this for George". Tom was delighted and even smiling almost laughing, you have to remember that Prince was snubbed by Rolling Stones as a guitarist.
