I bought this bike one year ago because of this video. I installed Shinko tires, carburetor with a 110 jet, jt sprockets, and a exhaust. I now have 4000 miles on it. It's been a very reliable bike and I have no regrets buying it.
it's awesome to see that you aren't just shitting on the bike because it's cheap. That kind of attitude is really refreshing, and you actually care about people with more financial struggle.
I just bought one. The one thing I highly recommend 1st is change the oil to Rotella 15w40 JASO MA approved. The oil in it is super thin. Next adjust the valves. Intake .003 Exhaust .005. The sell them to tight. Hard time starting when cold. Top dead center compression stroke the rockers had zero play on the valve spring and actually was still pushing down on the valve loosing compression. Then the carb they run a little lean. Recommend 2 full turns. Go all the way in and then back off 2 turns. Also the factory spark plug Torch are trash. There was a shop/sales owner said 70% of the plugs would melt off the electrode. He now swapped them out with NGK out of the crate. After doing that it starts instantly and purrs when cold. Hot idles perfect instead of erratic idle. Awesome video! Update 3/12/22: Since then I have done a lot of mods on this bike and can say it’s a different bike now. Zanella digital dash, Nibbi PE30 carburetor, Pod foam filter, Nibbi intake, Nibbi performance coil, deleted catalytic converter and spark arrestor, all lights converted to LED, drive chain upgrade, 17 tooth front sprocket, upgraded horn to HWY low pitch blaster, and where the reflectors are on the fork I mounted running lights. Top speed now 68-70 mph with a 250 lbs person flat ground . Stock was 60 mph. After break in, carb upgrade and freeing up the exhaust woke it up completely. I have 2000 miles on it and it’s running strong. With gas prices the bike has become part of my commute. Use my truck 2 days a week and the Hawk 3 days. 40 mile round trip to work and 10 of it is HWY. $600 in mods is completely worth it and drivability and dependability has improved 100%.

It’s an old school engine, low cost. DIY saves money as well. There’s a RUclipsr, MotoCheez, who has made a series about the Hawk and the improvements he’s made along the way.
My daughter bought one un 2018 just to run around at college with, saving her car for trips home. She's got 6300 miles on it now and she rides the crap outta it. She had made some modes, carb, cables, shift lever, kick starter(she used an 1983 Kawasaki 250 for that) and changed the rear sprocket. It's still running good and it's on and off road alot. Also remember those 2 toys in the box, yeah those are for your cables in the front.
Remember those "toy looking things" you mentioned on the video you posted in the second channel? Those were meant to go on the forks to hold the speedometer cable and brake lines, the speedo cable got smashed without it, not a fault of the bike itself.
Here in Philippines, we actually created a huge community of riders owning the same Chinese sportbike (the one on my profile pic.) I tell you, it was a blast of fun when we ride together and even just hang out on 7/11. Fun is not always on horsepower.
Do it. I did. I don't regret it at all, even though I do need a rear master cylinder out of the box. I'm not even mad, at that price. Literally a 15 dollar fix.
Rejetting the Hawk 250 & moddidying the air intake makes a huge difference in power. In fact it feels almost twice as powerful. The problems ive noticed arent engine problems they have all been problems with the transmission, clutch , chain , wheels and cables. My speedo never worked from new. I have 4228 miles on it and have spent more replacing broken parts with better parts than the original purchase price. It has sat 95% of the time ive had it
Hmm so what mods should I get and where should I get them? I really want this thing to have better acceleration AND top end speed Looking forward to your response, thanks.
Weird. I haven't had any clutch or trans issues with mine. I run Rotella 10w40 in it and change it every 200 miles though. Tried a few other oils but got some clutch fade when in city traffic.
Your presentation is unique; humble, funny and complimentary. In a world of satire and constant criticizing your approach demonstrating alternative views on what would be a issue or a negative is refreshing. 👍
Today's Chinese bikes use an updated Honda CG125 engine, with larger displacement and an updated counterbalance. This engine was developed in the 70's for developing countries that rarely do maintenance and only service their hard working motorcycles for repair. It was an engine designed for long maintenance intervals, reliability, low cost, and minimal servicing. Today, it's most common to be found in the 230cc variant with electric start and backup kick start. The engines are super reliable, parts are easy to come by, and maintenance is easy and well documented. The build quality and plastics might be sketchy but it'll likely be a bike you can pass down through the generations as a cheap learner.
I had one of these and did light modding, new shift lever, Carb, Jets, exhaust, and had to replace rear shock (factory one broke on a poor weld.) I rode this thing all over the fire roads and trails in AR around Jasper. It was a blast and kept up with my buddy's KLR 650 everywhere minus the highway. I would recommend these to anyone who is wondering if they would like Dual sport riding and doesn't want to spend Honda or Yamaha money to find out. Sold it for about $200 less than I bought it for when I moved overseas.
Im not very religious, but I fully respect his praying before riding on the street, he obviously realizes the danger.....notice how he doesn't pray before dirt riding, the safer way to ride!
Belief in goat herders beliefs, uneducated and walking across the desert does not serve us well in this day and age. In fact it keeps the whole world down
The speedometer was such a common failure that CSC replaced it with a digital one on their version of this bike. The CSC one is more expensive, but they do assemble it for you and do all the registration paperwork, which saves a lot of time. Mine arrived fully assembled with a temporary license plate already on it. I've been pretty happy with it. It ran a lot stronger (but noisier) after I did the post-breakin valve adjustment. I also put a smaller rear s procket on it to lower the revs a little at higher speeds, because I commute and spend most of my time at 40-50 mph. I don't really know the top speed because I get tired of the buffeting (due to no windshield) well before it runs out of acceleration. I'm curious if anyone has ever successfully kick started one of these, or if the kickstarter is basically just decorative. ;) I've never been able to get mine started with it. Admittedly it might be bad technique, since this is my first bike with a kickstarter.
The Speedos quit working. Mine stopped at 1800 miles on my hawk. Replaced mine with a digital amazon special. Ive got an Nx125 and a nx 650. But around town and on back roads I find myself choosing the hawk. I have modified mine. New carb, jetting, ported head. Removed a baffle in the muffler and of course a uni filter. After all that work it might have 20hp. Now a year later i have almost 8000 miles on my hawk. Its been a blast.
Boy I am so thankful I ran into this bike today. This is the first review video I had to watch and with all the positive comments I’m definitely getting this bike and tuning it up! Thank you all 👍
We have a Husqvarna 501, 300 and that same Hawk. The kids like the hawk because the Husky's are savage. That 300 2 stroke is a monster. The hawk is very manageable and goes every where we can with the husky's. You have to be a good rider because you don't have the power to onion out so the kids don't get into as much trouble. We ride in the mountain areas of Idaho and Montana, and the sand dunes.
My speedo went out when I had put roughly the same amount of mils after I did my break in heat cycles and such. Ordered digital tac for it and it works great!
Do you think it might have something to do with the "dropped" during the off road testing he did.....same thing happened to my DRZ but it was the drive for the speedo. Good chance to test that amazon warranty.
@@n95265 the novelty toys he was confused about in the leftover parts box were the cable routers for the forks. Notice his cables are just hanging out to be caught, pinched or crushed.
Bigger mikuni carb with Jets and pod filter really opens these up . Feels like 5hp gain for around 100$. Also remove every bolt on the bike and loctite them. I have 3k miles on mine with no breakdowns just maintenance.
@@justinzullo1917 no need for a new carb if you have a dremel. If you wanna get a new carb it's called a PZ30 on amazon or Ebay. More importantly the main jet needs to be upgraded to a 110 or so depending on your area.
Bought one of these used for $400 and cleaned it up, adjusted the valves, new carb and jet and the thing ripped! Sadly I didn't have space for it and ended up selling it for $900
Bought this bike a year and a half ago, for the first month or so it was a pretty rough wear in period. The electric start wasn't reliable at all and it was very easy to kill the bike in first. After that frustrating period, it's great. I've changed the sprockets but haven't done anything else to it and I love it. I would reccomend this bike to anyone on a budget for a street bike or to any learner's who might be looking for a good bike to work with. I wouldn't recommend trying to use this bike for the highway or for popping mega dank nooners down your streets, but other than that give it a try. Edit: forgot to mention this, the speedometer sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, but it's very easy to know your speed on the bike as you have to shift gears every 10mph or so. 2nd will take you up to 30, 3rd around 39, 4th 50, and 5th 60-65 if you push it
@@datboiLJ_ Id say that it depends. The bike does sit very tall compared to other motorcycles, so if you are a shorter guy then the seat height may make it too uncomfortable to properly learn. However, the low price is very nice for a beginner bike as you can learn the basics on it while still having plenty of fun without worrying about getting bored, as you can just upgrade to another bike! In my opinion this is the perfect beginner bike as long as you don't expect too much out of it, it can't go on the highway as it caps out around 55-60mph if i remember correctly, but its perfectly fine for pretty much everything else. If you have any questions feel free to ask, i loved my Hawk and it was the first bike i ever rode.
@@datboiLJ_I'd probably say like sub 5'8-9 might be a little uncomfortable, at the least 5'7. And from what I remember the speedometer wasn't completely useless, because it worked for long enough for me to get used to the gear system and how fast I could go with each gear. The rpm's were still 100% accurate, plus the actual speedometer itself wasn't even all that bad, only off by around 10mph after I put in sprockets. Before the sprockets it was only off by 5~ mph from what I remember
Myself and 7 of my buddies all bought the Apollo 125cc pit bikes back when we were in high school. It was some of the most fun we’ve ever had, rode the hell out of them on the trails and back roads. Held together surprisingly well for the amount of abuse they got😂
The Chinese bikes have come a long ways in the past 10-15 years. Obviously they are not "big 4" quality but for the price, they get the job done. We've owned a couple. Biggest complaints - replace the carb with something better and if you're doing a lot of rocky desert riding, upgrade the tires.
I bought one, was pondering it then watched this back in Dec 20.. I have made some upgrades.. BUY THE WARRANTY !!!! Thats all I will say ... I used mine.. Could not be happier...
Motocheez, Goodol'boys and Hawk 250 are three youtube channels with great videos on the Hawk 250. I've been beating one(couple videos on my channel) for about 4yrs with minimal maintenance. Loctite and rechecking factory assembly are the golden keys to a happy Hawk 250.
I bought one in 2018 and was expecting a cheap, high maintenance, rattle-trap!!! Boy was I WRONG!!! I bought it to save gas commuting to work. I live on Toledo Bend reservoir, between Texas and Louisiana. I work literally 6 miles across the lake on Louisiana side but I live on the TX side. So I’ve got to drive 45 miles up and around the lake to get to work. It’s a scenic drive and the 250 Hawk turns a boring daily routine into an exciting, enjoyable new part of the day to look forward to!!! And just like ANY bike, there’s many ways to customize it to fit your unique needs and style of riding! I would recommend this bike to ANYONE who wants a bike but can’t afford a Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki !!!! DONT LET THE CHEAP PRICE SCARE YA!
To be honest there's a lot of people out there just getting a crappy attitude because it's not some glamorous bike and honestly I don't think that people that have a 100 bad-ass bikes should be reviewing these but u but you changed my mind on that You gave this an open minded look and I really appreciate the positive outlook thank you so much this may be in my near future
I've been thinking about getting one for cheap transportation and hunting plus the fun. I've been riding motorcycles for 53 years, and I still love that single cylinder 57 Triumph I had. this bike brought back a few memories. I do believe I'll have to get one.
Nice honest out of the box review. I’d love to get two of these and ride with my son down the road and back on some trails and fire roads. 14hp not a lot but yeah you can work with that.
Thanks for doing this review! I bought basically the same bike here in Mexico. Only real differences are mind has USD forks, a rear disk brake and some lights. Its been pretty decent, I have ridden it 3000 miles and treated it like a normal enduro bike. The suspension bottoms a lot and its underpowered but otherwise pretty decent for the money.
Note: if you are gonna take this bike on rough and tough off roading, beware that the rear brake hydraulic stuff tends to smash the ground and it may jam your rear tyre. Speaking from experience
@First Last The issue is with the bike, which resembles a Dirt bike but doesn't have suspension or the Horsepower to be considered a real dirt bike. imho, it looks like a road bike a with lifted suspension.
Just got mine in a trade with 90 miles on it 👍 can't complain it was basically free rides just fine..just gotta take care of it...got a couple buddies who beat on these and they're still going...
And that's because of you guys had I not seen this video it might not have popped back in my head for some more years. since watching this video two or three months back I have gotten my motorcycle endorsement by taking my msf course through Harley-Davidson which was awesome riding that Harley-Davidson street 500 and now I'm just saving up for my hawk DLX appreciate you and your content.
Time to test your warranty! The big question now is, will they send you a new speedo or a replacement bike and consider what you have as a throw away! :-) Take care and God bless! Thank you for all you do and share with all of us!
@@davidb1089 In that price range? Around here, used, decent 250s are hard to find for any price. Post some links to some of your local ads showing decent 250s for $1400 delivered. I don't believe it.
I have seen three of these riding in the dirt. The rear swing arm is not very stiff at all and it twists thus causing the chain to fall off. Super important that all the bolts be removed. Loc-tight, then replace. I have seen a front cbaliper hanging in the wind due to lost bolts. There is no rear chain guide to help keep the chain in the correct position. Buy a used yamaha WR or similar.. The value will be there when you go to sell it and it won't fall apart.
I was going to buy one of these but went with the Pitster Pro XTR 250 instead. After researching "China" bikes the Kayo brand seems to be the best. All of them use the 223cc Honda clone engine. I'm very happy with it though. 1200 highway miles and zero problems. I've uploaded a couple videos on youtube if anybody's interested. "It's not what you're riding" as Sean says.
I wish my harley did also. Big motor just for 5 gears..... or they can at least make the 5 gears bigger that way it doesn't rev so high at 60 miles an hour.
This bike is sold in South Africa as a Big Boy TSR 250. It has a little more power in the South African variant, but only like 4hp more. It is sold with a 2 year 20 000km warranty, pre assembled, and has a PFI done on every bike sold. It really is a regular purchasing experience of a fairly competent bike. They have made a good name for themselves in South Africa and it is a good option for a cheaper starter bike.
Talk about a trip down memory lane. This was my first bike back in 2016. It was actually a good bike. I dropped it numerous times and it kept running. I got it for 1,100 back then and sold it for 1000. Sucks to see the price went up though. Great video btw!
dustin ketelhut Your best shot is to go to a local hardware store that carries all different kinds of bolts. Take your original one with you and maybe they will have an exact match. Most name brand stores and motorcycle dealerships don’t carry the parts the looking for since it is a Chinese bike. Hope that was helpful, good luck.
Hey. I'm from NYC i read on amazon that it comes with the registration with it. I have 2 kids that live in Pennsylvania. Would i be able to purchase this street legal dirt bike to take a road trip to another state. Do i need a license for this and does it include the mirrors front rear lights and turn signals?
I bought one of these a year ago as my first bike. Over 1000 miles on it and nothing broke yet, but I got a Grom and then a CB500F so I don't ride the Hawk much anymore
Fix it under warranty, and then record the warranty experience in videos like Doug did with that Range Rover. You said 3 years, probably plenty of repairs to be made in that time.

I have a tt250 made by Csc. It is almost an exact replica of the Hawk 250. The speedo cable constantly breaks on that gauge cluster. You can purchase a digital one that the 2020 hawks and Csc has been putting on theirs for a while that has no issues.
It's been fun watching Sean ride it, but not for me. Last year I bought a nice clean/running 1975 Honda CB750 for $2000. Not that much more than this bike costs. Maybe if you want an off road bike to trash and not worry about, this is a good option, but I'm sure you could get a used Honda or Yamaha for around the same price.

I have 2k miles on my 2020 Hawk. 0 issues. Though I did replace the carb w/rejet, new sprockets & chain and added a digital speedo (the cable is prone to snapping on the original) before I ever put 1 mile on it. Make sure to use Locktite. 2k miles later, numerous hill climbs and been on the moto track 2 times taking it easy and still not a issue. I REALLLLLY wanted to hate this bike but enjoy it instead. The parts for the Zongshen motors are really cheap, I did pistons\valves\timing chain on one, about 1/10th of the cost of honda parts for about 1/5th the performance. Even with an accelerator pump carb though, it improves throttle response but not much power really, the compression ratio is pretty conservative on these and only 2 valve heads, made to run on any octane fuel, quality parts in that motor though, neat bikes.
@Honda 250 thats it m8. they copy the engine design/internals with lower cost parts. i'd love too see a chinese built engine last as long a a Japanese built. there's a reason they're 50% cheaper
@Honda 250 no they don't. Engine is pretty solid. I've ported and decked the head on mine. No plastic. Over three years old and 7800 mile on it and never left me on the side of the road. Bike will do over 75mph gps
i have a supermoto version that i use almost everyday. these bikes are just basic designed to be neglected but you need to check the nuts and bolts. speaking of which, it does sound like nuts and bolts in a plastic pale! the engine is a honda crf230l clone copy with flaws like busting timing chain adjuster and leaky top end and near the starter crevices if you use 100% synthetic oil. it requires the cheapest oil you can get to stop leaking
I bought a 150cc scooter off of Amazon. Then I bought CVT, kit big bore kit, big valve head, 38mm intake and flat side carb, good wheels and tires, and an exhaust. I can tell you it was a blast. I took it to thunder beach and terrorized Harley's with it. The down side is that it felt unsafe at high speeds.lol
I bought this bike about 3 years ago. Got the mikuni carb and jet, a digital speedometer, a stronger battery and some tires (about another $300) and it was a great way to learn the basics of how to work on a bike and ride a bike and build confidence before I threw down money for a "real name brand bike".
The price is tempting for a small dual sport, but I'm thinking maybe the Yamaha TW200 is a better quality machine that you don't need to upgrade immediately.
I’ve had soooo much fun on Chinese bikes. If you have zero issues dropping 4-5k sure go Japanese.... but you CANNOT have more fun on and off road for less than 2k. Zongshen has made millions of these engines

The speedo is broke because you didn't use the metal "toy" it came with. It's to hold the brake and speedo lines so they don't get destroyed. You didn't use them, the speedo got destroyed. Not Hawk's fault, that's on you

How's that bike treating you?
Do you need a license for it ?? Please let me know.
@@jaydentimsans425 Anything above 50 cc requires a motorcycle license (or endorsement). So yes.
I have to think after spending the time and money for those mods, maybe you would be better off to go buy a used Japanese bike.
Also, at least you're likely to find someone locally it will work on the japanese bike.
Can you get it street legal in California?
Remember those "toy looking things" you mentioned on the video you posted in the second channel? Those were meant to go on the forks to hold the speedometer cable and brake lines, the speedo cable got smashed without it, not a fault of the bike itself.
and install the front signals ya fookin tool!
My thoughts exactly, a crushed brake line will b next if you don't install cable guides ASAP!

Do it. I did. I don't regret it at all, even though I do need a rear master cylinder out of the box. I'm not even mad, at that price. Literally a 15 dollar fix.
@DucknCoverin it was a joke buddy. Lighten up.
I really want this thing to have better acceleration AND top end speed
Looking forward to your response, thanks.
That's probably due to his Christian upbringing
Well said and I totally agree. Seems like a really good dude and I really enjoyed him quoting scripture. Refreshing in this nasty world we live in

I ride a hawk 250 in the Virgin Islands everywhere, other than the clutch cable breaking and it getting stolen three times it’s been great.
They returned it lol
Must be pretty decent if that many people are trying to swipe it.
I’m in the Virgin Islands looking at this review right now. I wanna get me something small as I live on the north side and wanna have some weekend fun

I also put a smaller rear s
procket on it to lower the revs a little at higher speeds, because I commute and spend most of my time at 40-50 mph.
What carb did you upgrade to please

2nd will take you up to 30, 3rd around 39, 4th 50, and 5th 60-65 if you push it
Hey man, I wanna learn how to ride motorcycles or bikes and I’m looking to buy something. Is it still worth it?
@@SnowWhite-mi8mk so how short would you say is too short? And I heard the speedometer is not the best is that still the case?
@@datboiLJ_I'd probably say like sub 5'8-9 might be a little uncomfortable, at the least 5'7. And from what I remember the speedometer wasn't completely useless, because it worked for long enough for me to get used to the gear system and how fast I could go with each gear. The rpm's were still 100% accurate, plus the actual speedometer itself wasn't even all that bad, only off by around 10mph after I put in sprockets. Before the sprockets it was only off by 5~ mph from what I remember
@@datboiLJ_ although I have since sold the bike and moved up to a ninja 300 so I'm not sure how well it's fairing currently

People always get hung up on brands, as long as you’re having fun who cares what brand you’re on. Just have fun
Idk, maybe the people who don't want endless warranty claims from subpar quality components made of Chinesium pot metal? Just a guess.

This seems like a legit bike for commuting around town. Throw some street tires on it. Put a storage rack on it. The price is great.

@First Last The hydraulic system for rear disc is exposed and of low quality on this bike
@First Last as said in main comment, Under rough off roading condition, it is something to mind full of.
@First Last The issue is with the bike, which resembles a Dirt bike but doesn't have suspension or the Horsepower to be considered a real dirt bike. imho, it looks like a road bike a with lifted suspension.

Even with an accelerator pump carb though, it improves throttle response but not much power really, the compression ratio is pretty conservative on these and only 2 valve heads, made to run on any octane fuel, quality parts in that motor though, neat bikes.

I'm looking to buy this thing soon and I'm really glad I found your video. I wanted to see how it is first and it seems to be handling quite well. I want it because it's pretty and seems fuel efficient.
I put a digital cluster on mine for about $30. It's actually accurate unlike the stock unit, has a tach and doesn't use a cable drive. EBay exhaust for $80 helps them breath, or if your handy with a welder cutting the stock cat out works too.
More about the hawk please do some upgrades and give your opinion, thanks keep up the good work
Thank for these videos. I have never ridden a dirt bike or any kind of motorcycle but I want to learn. I have a can am x3 rc turbo r and a 700+hp Corvette so sometime I just wanna cruise some tracks and these seem to hit the budget since I don't know crap about riding.
The speedo is broke because you didn't use the metal "toy" it came with. It's to hold the brake and speedo lines so they don't get destroyed. You didn't use them, the speedo got destroyed. Not Hawk's fault, that's on you
Way to be a dick about it
I hope these stick around cause I really want one of these and the idea of a bike being delivered to my house tickles me to death lol
