  • WHAT IF VFRPG RELEASED INSTEAD OF SHENMUE?!
Matt explores this very question looking at the following:
    ✅History
    ✅Gameplay
    ✅Brand Recognition
    ✅Would the story be finished?
What do you think would have happened had #Shenmue been released as VFRPG?

Wow, this is a hard one to contemplate. I'm just so grateful that we got to see the beta saturn footage of Shenmue and know about the whole VFRPG backstory.
I imagine so many games have backstories like that to where the setting or premise of a game change, which gamers will never know about.
Tbh, I kinda like that Shenmue became something different from VF.

I’ve contemplated this as well, I still want a proper Virtua Figthet RPG but funny thing is Shenmue fighting system is what got me into VF as I had written it off before as I didn’t understand it.

You never know, the next VF title could be a stand alone 45 hour RPG? A man can always dream…

I really hope SEGA gives Suzuki back to the rights to the Virtua Fighter engine! Imagine if some VF characters made cameos in Shenmue 4/5?! Especially in an underground kumite tournament like in Shenmue 2!

Fascinating topic. There is so much VFRPG DNA left in the Shenmue games that I feel it still appeals to fans of VF (it certainly does for me). People familiar with VF pick up on the fact that Shenmue is heavily rooted in VF lore albiet slightly obfuscated. Had it been marketed as a vf rpg I think it would have made better sense to consumers and possibly sold more in certain regions. I'm not sure how much VF brand power would have aided its sales in the States, though. That being said, I much prefer having Shenmue as it is now to a VFFPG because it feels like I get the best of both worlds.

I wondered the same thing. They decided to create a new IP to have more freedom when it comes to characters. And probably because Yu wanted to focus more on Chinese locations that would have seen the VF characters a bit forced into those scenarios.
A VF RPG would make more sense if he was traveling all over the world like the original series is. In Shenmue, he's basically beating expats up 💀💀

I would be down for a Virtua Fighter RPG, even having Ryo Hazuki as DLC would be cool!

VF rpg would have probably been more successful because of all the characters it had to pull from. Not sure if ir would of had tie in to the vf series, but as stories and games, that would have been sweet. Imagine a story with kage that played like ninja giaden...or imagine in shenmue 2 the street fighters are vf character tie in. Almost seems limitless to what Sega could have done wif vf rpg.

Personally I think it would of done any better because of the Dreamcast and limited game options than the Sony PlayStation had if it was released on all platforms than any game they released would of been better

Yeah, porting Shenmue II (and just that one) as an exclusive Xbox title was also a mistake. On PS2 could have sold enough to justify Shenmue 3 way before the crowdfunded version. Especially considering how successful the Yakuza franchise has been, which was a PS exclusive for long time.

@@OverJumpRally I don’t understand why they did not import it to both consoles after the Dreamcast was coming to an end tbh. Sega blamed shenmue for making high loss rather than look at the Dreamcast was expensive for the time and they did not like 3rd party developers using there console unlike Sony who wanted all at the time

@@renners4367 they gave him the ball, had the whole company riding on him pulling a miracle, it needed to be a phenomenon. I commend SEGA for what they created but I think they misjudged how depraved and demoralized the general population is. Great works of art rarely have mainstream appeal.

@@STAXONDECK1 could of had mainstream appeal the game was decade ahead of its time and if it was on a wider console which it would make it more appealing to people. Look online twitch,RUclips first time people playing it 90% of them love shenmue series they just ain’t like us old gamers that won’t let go, if there is a shenmue 4/5 and etc it definitely would sell now and even new fans will buy it
